Name: Dristan
Age: 29
Sex: Male
Sexual Orientation: Homosexual
Craft: Cross-crafted Beasthandler/beasthealer currently training in dragonhealing while tending to the Weyr's herds and flocks
Rank: Journeyman
Location: High Reaches
Physical Description: Rugged, 6'1", brown skinned and haired, with golden eyes. Dristan keeps his hair short, if a little floppy, sporting a tiny braid that he's been using to track the relationship he has with Bluerider H'sad. He's got rough hands and is pretty much solid muscle from his work with runners and wherries.
Personality: Stubborn, hardworking, generous - jaded, self-defeating, insecure.
Unable to see his place in the grand design, Dristan is full of self-doubt. He has only begun to realize his potential, though he is keenly aware of his unworthiness as a Candidate. He failed to Impress and this fit very easily into his world view, which is that when one begins life at the bottom that is most likely where they belong. It's not intentional by any means, and Dristan doesn't want to think that way. It's just ingrained in him at this point. Perhaps he is the thing that kept him from finding a match on the Sands. Whatever the reason, his confidence in such a future was shaken and ultimately flattened.
Such a thing was almost a relief, however, as it freed him to fully dedicate himself to his studies and to the animals that looked to him. He was become a better man for it, however embittered his inability may have made him. He knows very well what the hierarchy at the Weyr is, and where he might stand in it. All the same, he is devoted to the care and well being of all creatures at High Reaches Weyr, including the dragons whose ridership has now been barred to him. This path has opened up his heart somewhat, allowing him to grow as a man and fostering a gentleness and empathy that had hitherto been buried.
When bad things happen he is inclined to be discouraged. However stubborn he may be, he has learned that the little people in the world are simply not at the top of anyone's list. He has not forgotten the lessons of his past, of his mother's situation or his own. He may fight through the pain of it, but he is constantly aware of it. One thing can be said of Dristan, and that is that he borders on being a workaholic, throwing himself fully into any task that he's put to. In that arena he absolutely refuses to give up. The work of his hands is ultimately the only thing he can believe in. It, and his weyrmate, is the only thing that will not betray him in the end.
...
History: Coming from humble roots, it was Dristan's greatest honor and joy to be searched for a clutch at High Reaches. He'd been a stable boy and assistant for the stable master at his minor hold. While he'd showed enough promise to merit a formal apprenticeship in the Beastcraft trade, there was little glory in such work. He took pleasure in the simple reward of seeing the beasts he tended to in their finest shape, content in his craft... or so he thought. For the illegitimate scion of a vagabond and a kitchen helper, being found on Search was absolutely beyond description. The idea of being a rider set his mind afire with hopes and dreams that he'd never before dared to consider for himself.
Possible futures laid themselves out so beautifully. He had never imagined such dreams, of rising above his simple apprenticeship. People like him weren't bound for greatness. That was just the way of things. However, his status as a Candidate forced him to face the reality that the little hovel he'd grown up in need not be the hovel he died in. It changed his world overnight. Even so, he missed tending to runners and wherries.
At the Weyr he met a young man named Hensad, with whom he quickly bonded. Since they were both candidates, they spent considerable time together, and their bond quickly grew. Before too long, he and Hensad were attached at the hip, and it surprised no one when their friendship grew into love. Now determined to stay in the Weyr, Dristan threw himself into his studies and chores with a vengeance. However, it would ultimately be of no use. He was simply not destined to Impress.
When Hensad became H'sad, chosen by a Blue dragon, it strained their relationship slightly because they now had completely different schedules. H'sad spent his days training with the other riders, with little enough time for Dristan, though he did try to make what moments he had last. Had that been the only factor involved, perhaps they would have stayed together. Another factor rose to surpass them all: Dristan failed to Impress. On his 26th Turn he aged out and in a moment of panic, he broke up with H'sad. Surely he should not weigh the other down with his own uselessness?
Yet H'sad and Blue Cinonth refused to accept his departure, even as he packed his things. When he was ready to throw away everything that he'd earned at the Weyr, to throw away the friendships and relationships he'd built there, the Bluerider was his voice of reason. Gently assuring him that he still loved him and did not care that he could no longer join him as a rider, H'sad managed at length to convince Dristan to stay... though it was a near thing. Deciding that his usefulness to the Weyr could be increased if he took up dragonhealing along with his own beasthealing specialty Dristan returned to his studies, this time under the Weyr's head dragonhealer. While he tended to the beasts that kept the dragon's bellies full and provided steeds to the dragonless he learned how to treat injured dragons.
For in truth many dragons became injured during the drills and games that kept High Reaches competitive. In pursuing dragonhealing, he attained his journeymanship, walking the tables at 27 Turns old. As a cross-crafted journeyman he has more than had his hands full-- especially with the return of Thread. When that ancient enemy showed its many ugly faces Dristan felt that perhaps this was what he had been called to the Weyr for, as those dragons brave that fought the silver menace came back from their sorties with grievous wounds. Even High Reaches could not have been fully prepared for the return of Thread, for nothing moved quite as the Thread did, and Dristan found that quite suddenly his skills were in great demand.
