If any avid book reader had ever spent any time in a bookstore, they were quite familiar with just plopping their butt down in the aisle and looking through all the books on the bottom shelves or starting a little pile to glance through. Which was what Kodi was currently doing. She had a small stack of about five books next to her (if anyone actually were to read the titles, two were the same, just different cover art) with another in her hands as she got sucked into reading the first chapter of The Lord of the Rings.
Almost getting stepped on for the fourth time, Kodi finally stood up and stretched. She'd originally set out to get a couple new copies of her favorite books. Which turned into her browsing J.R.R. Tolkien's books. And from there... a seat on the floor.
She picked up a couple of the books from her pile, putting the others back. The Lord of the Rings was tucked under her arm as she grabbed up a box set of The Histories of Middle-Earth to browse through. Since she wasn't quite ready to make a purchase, she made her way to the little coffee shop inside the bookstore, making sure to order herself a passion fruit tea before commandeering a table.

With a small sigh, Melian had already settled in at her small table, sipping at a cup of hot chai and wondering if she'd lost her goddamn mind. Though she very much doubted that anyone who meant her harm would come looking for her in a bookstore of all places, the possibility was there.
And yet, that knowledge had done absolutely squat once she realized she'd fled her apartment and not taken her copies of Tolkien with her. And she refused to be separated from her favorite books. Hence, bookstore.
Rubbing at her eyes a little wearily, she pulled The Silmarillion from her bag and stroked the cover lovingly with her fingertips. She'd long known that some considered this piece far too dry and well, bible-y, but Melian argued that they simply hadn't read far enough in. After all, one didn't find werewolves in the bible. So far as she knew.
As she reached up to brush her hair from her face, Melian's eye caught the table beside hers and she felt her lip curl in mild annoyance. Much as she loved Tolkien, she had very little use for his son. Or the books said son churned out.
Almost without thinking, she opened her mouth and, to her own horror, heard herself speaking, "You're going to find the Histories awfully disappointing if you want an actual Tolkien story and not just a lot of his son wanking it over discarded scraps of notes."

Though she was definitely a big fan of Tolkien's work and did dearly love the film adaptations, Kodi had to admit that she was not as properly schooled in everything like a good nerd ought to be. Hence her browsing through the books she was not familiar with. She sipped at her tea absently, flipping through pages and skimming more than actually reading it.
When a voice beside her spoke up, Kodi didn't realize they were talking to her at first. Until she heard 'Tolkien' in there. Blinking in surprise, she glanced up to the table next to hers and the girl sitting there.
"S-Sorry?" She hadn't quite heard what had been said, but glancing down at the Histories she looked back over. "His son?" Belatedly, she glanced through the book itself to find the notes about the author... and discovered it was indeed the son. Wow. She'd totally missed that.
"You've read them?" Kodi inquired curiously, turning to look back at the other girl. "I hadn't seen them yet and was looking through them." She admitted.

Oh hell. Melian silently swore at herself when the other girl answered. So much for not drawing attention to herself. Still.
With a small sigh, she turned her chair slightly to make talking a little easier. If she was going to educate this girl, she wanted to do so in relative comfort.
"His son," she answered, trying hard to keep the derision from her voice. "And I read them. Once. Before throwing the book into a Goodwill bin. He literally just took his father's notes and tried to turn them into something new and wonderful."
Her lips twitched as if holding back a smirk. "I personally think he failed miserably and wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't end up using his dad's old grocery lists at some point in a bid to maintain relevance. Besides, the only Middle Earth history anyone needs is the Silmarillion. Bits of which, I might add, Tolkien the Younger chopped up for his book."
She would have liked to say more, indeed, she would have loved it. But since she had no idea where this girl feel on the Tolkien Fan spectrum, she figured it was better to hold back and not look like a crazy lady.

They were that bad? Kodi glanced down at the book she currently held, turning it over in her hands slowly while listening to the other girl. Slowly, she set the book back down on the table. Everything she was hearing just made her feel like tossing it in the nearest Goodwill herself. But at least she'd been saved the hassle of purchasing the books and finding out the hard way.
"I... think I might just take your word for it. That just sounds like an awful read. Especially if it was that obvious he was only taking his father's notes and trying to make his own best seller." She stared at the books as if they might burn her should she pick them up again.
But something else that had been mentioned caught her attention. A name she'd heard before and yet... wasn't familiar with. She turned to face the other girl with a curious and hopeful look. "The Silmarillion?" Why could she not remember where she'd heard that. Or hadn't heard of it?
A smile twisted her lips up slowly. "I'm Kodi, by the way. And... I will admit, I do love the Lord of the Rings books dearly. But, I'm definitely not the most educated on the series. I just love reading the books." And watching the films. And maybe one day creating a cosplay.

Oh balls. In spite of wanting to remain incognito, she'd managed to make an acquaintance. s**t. ********, there was no help for it. She'd have to give a name since a rude lady waxing eloquent about Lord of the Rings would be a hell of a lot more memorable than a casually polite Name.
"Mel," she replied smoothly as she sorted through her own books and with a small sigh of regret, plucked out the book in question and passed it over. "It's a bit bible-y at first, but once you're through all the begets and begats, it's a wonderful story.."
Smiling a little at Kodi's admission, Melian nodded in approval. This girl at least had taste.
"I suppose I was raised on the books," she answered. "The films do a fine job of presenting the stories for the average person, though I can't say I love the Hobbit trilogy. I tend to stick with the Rankin-Bass animated Hobbit when I feel like watching Bilbo's story. But the books are the best, in my opinion."
Which reminded her. She'd have to find a replacement DVD player and some used copies of the movies. God damn Alodie for getting them both into this mess!
Kyrieko I am so sorry! I thought I had replied to this already. I am a derp. ;;

She graciously took the book to look it over, eyes scanning along the front and back covers, the inside and glossing over an excerpt. It was amazing that she'd managed to never read it! Or maybe she'd just been too fixated on her other books to really branch out? It wouldn't have been a first.
"I'd like to think I can handle the bible-y beginning, but the forewarning is very much appreciated." She'd still have trudged through it out of sheer determination. But it was nice to know that it would all be rewarding.
Kodi glanced from the book she held to look up at Mel again, a bright smile forming. "I wish I could claim to have been raised on them... but it was a chance buy when I was younger. I've always loved reading and happened to pick up the series and just never let it go." Which was probably why she didn't know about the Silmarillion.
Now the films... she has seen them all. And there may have been a bit of a guilty look that flashed across her face. She couldn't really deny that Lord of the Rings would always be her favorite, but she'd grown rather fond of some of the characters in the Hobbit trilogy after watching them.
"I won't deny I loved the film adaptations. I may have guiltily watched them many a time over." And really, she had named her dog Thorin... DaisyMilk Ahah now it's my turn to apologize... I was sick for a week and am catching up on tags ;u; <3

"Nothing wrong with enjoying them," Melian said, voice slow and thoughtful. "I've just never been a huge fan of shoehorning characters in for no reason. Tauriel and Grima Lite pretty much hit all the wrong buttons for me. And all The Hobbit's little elf-dwarf romance did was cheapen the Galadriel-Gimli plot points. But, opinions. Everyone's got 'em."
She wanted to say more, but had happened to glance at the clock behind the cafe's counter. Eyes widening slightly, she wondered how she'd allowed herself to lose track of the time so badly. She still had to pay for her books and get back to her hotel.
Smiling apologetically, she got to her feet and grabbed the books she was purchasing.
"It was lovely meeting you, Kodi. You go ahead and hold onto The Silmarillion. I hope you enjoy it," she babbled, doing her best to give an impression of reacting to a forgotten appointment rather than sheer terrified paranoia. "I'm so sorry to bolt like this, but I'm afraid I let myself relax a bit too long and I still have so much I have to get done today."
Which was true. With a final smile and hand wave, she headed for the line to check out. And from there, it was a dash back to the hotel and what she'd come to think of as a safe haven.
Kyrieko Not a problem! Just wrapping this due to some RL stuff that's popped up. I don't want to leave you in RP limbo and this way we can both get our reqs ~ <3 Thank you so much!
