The youth walked with both hands behind his head at a slow pace as he took in the area. Jax was visiting Oba with his family to see his mother's family. Not that he was all that interested. All Jax cared about was his twin brother and his parents.

Besides, Oba had very little trees. He wasn't a fan. The hybrid boy missed the trees and being able to climb them. Plus it was so hot in the direct sunlight. How did anyone live here? How had his mother lived here? He gave a huff and looked around as he scratched at the back of his head. "Wha' is thar ta do in this place?" There wasn't much from the looks of it.

Adenah wiped a swatch of blood and grime off her face with the back of her hand. She looked over her shoulder, back towards the area she had just run away from with a sour puss, teary eyed grimace. Kids could be mean when they wanted to be, and not everyone was as accepting of outsider blood as others.

When she turned back around her back was a little more hunched, even if she was trying hard to hold back the tears. She was strong; strong like her parents! She just...didn't have to be all the time, right?

And when she came around a corner, nearly running into another kid, she snapped on impulse, "Watch it!"

He was still looking around boredly when all of a sudden he was almost run into by a.. something. He was also yelled at as though it were his fault. Jax lifted one brow as he stopped walking and eyed the dark skinned red head. "Oy, yous the one who came 'round the corner." Dropping his hands to his sides he looked a bit more closely at what was before him.

"Yous a mix breed, yeah? Shifter an'...?" Jax took another moment to look the girl over. "Was'it Oban? My Mama has red hair but no' as bright." He pointed at the girl's hair. So she was the same mix as him but with different traits. It made him tilt his head slightly. Neither he nor his brother had gotten their mother's red hair.

"Yeah, so? What's it matter if I am?"
She all, but snarled. Adenah wiped at her face with the back of her hand, all bristles and sass through her tears.

"Stop lookin' at me. It's weird." The little dark skinned hybrid took a half step back, furrowing her brow at the boy. He was staring a little too closely, which put her already frazzle emotions on edge. What, was he going to pick on her too? Even though he was different as well?!

Subconsciously she lifted a hand to her hair, and Adenah sniffled. "My not-dad gave it to me."

She seemed defensive over the fact that he noticed she was mixed. Jax thought that was a bit odd. Then again he had never been picked on for his looks. His dad was the leader of their mercenaries and his mother was a beautiful dancer. There was nothing to pick at. "Ain't nothin' wrong wit' it. My Da' is a shifter and my mama is Oban." Jax shrugged his shoulders.

As the girl said her "not-dad" gave her the red hair he looked confused for a moment. He assumed that she meant her dad was the Oban but the wording was weird. "Was'a not-dad'?" One hand came up and he scratched at his ear for a moment both out of need to cure an itch and for something to do.

"You're a different kinda mix than me; sorta like me, but vice versa. My mom is a shifter, but my not-dad is a Oban."

Now that the blood and tears were wiped more fully off Adenah's face she was able to calm down a bit, enough to really look at him. He had Oban skin, like Ani, but his was a different color. It was a little...weird, but sorta neat all at once.

"A not-dad is the guy who shoulda been your dad, but he's not. The one who made you, but he's not here. So, my real dad is a matori." She stumbled over the word a little, but Adenah didn't want to say the easier slur of 'fish'.

He guessed he was the opposite of her. She had the shifter skin and he had the Oban. But they had the same eyes. As she explained what a not-dad was he noticed that there was still some blood on her face and moved his hand out to wipe it off. Jax normally avoided girls since he thought they were yucky but something told him to do this at least. "So yer not-Da' left or somethin'?" The blood that he'd gotten off her was then wiped onto his pants.

Since neither his mother or his father had prejudices against other races he didn't see a problem with a Matorian being her dad. Jax instead just kinda tilted his head some. "Tha's kinda cool."

For the first time he looked around the girl before him and noticed a group of kids in the distance. They seemed to be having lots of fun. "Oh hey, yous know them? I's bored an' wanna play.: It hadn't dawned on him that they were the cause of her tears and the bit of blood.

She closed the eye his hand was closest to, ducking a little away from him, but not enough to pull the girl entirely away. "He was never there. My real dad is, and that's all I need."

As far as Adenah was concerned her family was just fine; which is what she was trying to get those kids to understand. Like this kid; he didn't seem so bad, and something about the way he brushed off her concerns as if they didn't matter in his world made her smile.

Until he looked past her towards the other kids. Then she scowled. "You don't want to go over there. They're jerks."

Could he imagine if his dad had never been there? Jax didn't think so. Mostly because he could see his sweet mama tracking him down. The idea made his lips give a twitch as though they wanted to pull back into a smile. Then he heard her say that the other kids were jerks. Jax took a moment and put two and two together. The tears and blood were from those kids.

"They's made you cry?" Something his mother always told him seemed to make him scowl in the direction of the kids. Suddenly they didn't look so fun. The boy looked around for a moment before he noticed a Quar waiting close-by. With an idea in mind he bent down to pick up a rock before tossing it quite hard at the rear of the Quar. When it hit it spooked the beast and sent it in the direction of the other kids.

"Yeah; they're bad."
Adenah turned around and crossed her arms over her chest, puffing up with indignant anger. "The big ones, anyway. The ones 'bout our size aren't so bad...least they weren't, until the others started making them do stupid stuff."

"What're you-?" She didn't have much time for questions; not when a Quhar was now running full force towards the kids. Adenah screamed, her own voice being drowned out by the sounds of the others, who scattered like perzi in the rain.

When she was mostly sure they were okay, as far as she could see, Adenah reached out and smacked his shoulder. "What's wrong with you? They could'a died!"

Jax laughed and moved away from her as she smacked his shoulder. "Easy. Quar ain't dumb they's go 'round things not through 'em." If it had been a Janarim or something else then he wouldn't have done that. Still he did give a glance toward the other kids to make sure none of them had been hurt.

"A'sides, I can't start fights. My mama will ground me. So's this is bests I can do fer ya." He looked at the girl then and shrugged his shoulders. He was taught to always be noble toward girls, young and old, by his mother and she wasn't the one he wanted to cross. With his dad he could always get away with things. His mom on the other hand.. well since he was mostly with her she held all the cards. "If they's is callin' yous names jus' ignore it. Ain't no one can has power over ya unless ya lets 'em."

"That's not the point!"
She hit him again - and once more for good measure. Enough until her huffed up rage was spent.

When she looked back at her old friends some were helping others to their feet, each watching out for the cloven hooved beast still moving through their old hanging ground. A few looked her way, pointing them out to the others closer to them.

"I did ignore the names, til they started picking on me, then I picked back and they hit me. That's what ya can't ignore."
If it were just names she could try to learn how to deal with it, but when they started hitting her, well...that's what she didn't want to deal with.

Still...he was the first one to stick up for her in days...."Thanks though...for trying to help. Even if ya coulda killed someone."

Jax looked at the other kids and as they pointed their way he waved at them while wearing a grin. It would be clear who it was who hit the Quar and sent it that way then. Of course he was busy doing that so when Adenah hit him again he wasn't ready to dodge. "O'ch. Stop tha'." He took another hit and moved away from her.

She had an odd way of showing she was thankful. Jax frowned at her. "I gots no problem hittin' a boy but yous don't go hittin' girls." Another thing his mother taught him. Though she had given him some exceptions.

Jax rubbed the spot that she had hit repeatedly and shook his head. "Ain't you gots a brother or somethin' to stick up for ya? I has one and I stick up fer him all the time." Mostly because Djego was afraid to climb trees and it was weird for a shifter. Even a shifter hybrid. Or at least it was where he was from.

"That's so stupid." Adenah scrunched up her face. "How come it's okay to hit a boy, but not a girl? Ya fraid we're gonna break or somethin'?" What kind of weird thing was that? If no one hit girls then her momma would be out of work!

"No, I got sisters. We have to stick up for ourselves." Having boys come to their aid just seemed really dumb to Adenah. It was nice to have someone help, but if she had to wait for him to show up every time she needed it then Adenah might as well just take things into her own hands.

Stupid? Jax looked at her for a while before shrugging. "My Mama says girls ain't supposed ta be hurt." It wasn't that he was afraid of them breaking. He was more afraid of his mom.

"Sisters?" Well then the girl was doomed. Unless it was another girl that picked on her. He took a breath and shook his head. "A'right, I can be yer brother since we's the same an' all. Or yous can borrow mine." Though he wasn't so sure how Djego would feel about being borrowed out without his consent. Should he ask first?

"My Mama is a pretty dancer so she's delicate an' all. My Da' saved her a'fore me and my brother was born. Says boys is a'pposed to protect girls like tha'."
