If there was one thing in life that someone could not prepare for, it was to be stamped on their head while they were asleep. This was precisely what Havase had just endured as the group of lions had strode through his home. One by one they had unceremoniously placed their paws on his skull and strode through, completely oblivious to the fact that a living, breathing entity was beneath their paws. It was a wonder any of them ever got anywhere with that poor perception... It hadn't even seemed deliberate either, they didn't even realise he was there.
Or rather they hadn't known until he stirred, and one appeared to catch him out of the corner of his eye.
Ahhh, but by the appearance of the one who had spotted him, this was the individual that he had been charged with tracking down. Admittedly he hadn't actually gotten round to doing it yet, despite what his connections might have declared it wasn't imperative that he did so. They still had time, and the amount of scurrying around and worrying that the collective often did was enough to lull anyone into a slumber... Either that or it would positively exhaust them. Suffice it to say that he didn't ascribe to the definition of efficiency that some individuals seemed to have.
...Besides, his way seemed to have paid off.
As he rose to his paws and gave himself a shake down, he took the opportunity to inspect any damage that might have befallen him and then smiled. Everything seemed to be in order, his mane was a little flatter than normal, but it would spring back in no time... Especially when his companion accidentally mistook it for grass and started to eat it again. Things always had a way of working out if you waited long enough.
"Huh, well you must be Tethys," remarked softly and tilted his head to the side.Words: 321

He had risen up from the ground from out of nowhere, or at least this was the observation that the white lion had made when he had given the most brief of glances over his shoulder. There had been a flicker of movement in the corner of his eye, enough to give him reason to pause and even as his reavers had kept going, he had stayed behind to see if it had been a trick of the light. What had greeted him was entirely unexpected, as the largest lion he had ever seen rose out of the ground and gave himself a shake.
Tethys had been quick to turn his gaze down to the floor in an attempt to see the pit beneath, but much to his astonishment there hadn't been one. They had literally walked over that area no more than a minute or so ago, there had been no signs of life whatsoever. If there had been at least one of them would have realised it surely? Even now as he regarded the lion with unchecked surprise, he didn't appear to have received any injuries from the multiple times in which he should have been stamped in the head.
Hell, the guy wasn't even in a horrible mood.
Based on the number of feet that should have connected with his nose, Tethys knew from a personal level that he would be absolutely fuming if anyone had had the audacity to do that to him. At the very least he should have been subject to a headache and yet he was smiling, it resulted in the white lion having several questions, with only more to add to the list as he was addressed directly by name.
"I must be?" he repeated to Havase as he lifted an eyebrow in return. "What makes you say that...?Words: 307

"Just a feeling," Havase replied, the smile never leaving his lips as he placed distance between himself and the patch he had been lying on. Once again it would be all too evident that there had been no ditch there. For all intents and purposes the lion had been lying in that spot the entirety of the time, given he also didn't appear to be incorporeal, he couldn't simply have appeared without any form of warning.
...To assume he was some sort of ghost would have been inaccurate.
At Tethys's expression he gave a small laugh and shook his head, it seemed the younger lion really did have quite a bit of pride. Though this was tempered by an uncertainty, he didn't seem to like when he wasn't in control, at least not out here where he was too exposed. Smart, but in the grand scheme of things, it wouldn't serve him well. No one could plan for every possibility in the world and to attempt to do so would simply spell disaster.
"He said that you had difficulty seeing what was directly in front of you," he added smoothly and motioned to himself. "At this point I do not believe that is an isolated flaw, it seems to be a fairly consistent trait among you and your friends," he mused. Words: 221

"You weren't there, the ground was flat," Tethys pointed out stubbornly, although even as he said it he didn't quite believe it. The lion before him was no deity, he didn't exude any type of power. Despite his size he seemed mortal and the last time Tethys had checked, no one could flatten themselves to nothingness, especially when they weren't that size.
However, the longer he regarded Havase, the more he did have to wonder how in the name of the gods he had been invisible. He didn't seem to have applied any effort, in fact the lion before him seemed to conduct himself in a fashion that clearly stated he didn't do 'effort'. So how? Havase's observation that he had been stepped on was accurate, but even then he hadn't said anything to highlight that he existed.
There had been no breathing.
No warmth.
Nothing.
"You must be rock hard if we couldn't feel you," Tethys stated at last and narrowed his eyes. "There's no way we should have missed you, at the very least your sides should have been moving while you were breathing."

"Sleeping!" Havase declared with quite a great deal of enthusiasm. With the smile still on his lips, he took what probably wasn't intended as a compliment as one and then shook his head. Tethys was so very insistent that he should have been seen and yet he hadn't been.
"You can only see what you want to see," he pointed out wisely and shook the toe of his paw. "You didn't think I would be there, you didn't expect I would be there, and therefore you didn't see me," he paused briefly and leant against a nearby tree, immediately blending in. It was a rather spectacular scene to behold, he really was quite similar in colour to everything around him.
"Just because you don't think something should be there doesn't mean it isn't," he added and tilted his head to the side.
"So you chose to lie on a path because...?" Tethys interjected. It was a valid question, this part of the forest seemed to be one that was used as a walkway. It was the clearest point in it and the easiest to cut through. With that in mind, it seemed somewhat unwise to place yourself directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
"It's not a path," Havase replied smoothly and pointed off to his right. "It's no more different than over there, this afternoon you just chose to go this way."
"That doesn't explain how we didn't see you breathing," the white lion persisted.
"Ah, well..." Havase tilted his head to the side. "That requires a bit of skill, and for all your bluster I'm not sure you're ready for that secret yet," he continued merrily and let out a small laugh. "Perhaps you will learn to see what is in front of you first before you worry about how not to be seen, yes?"
Tethys opened his mouth to protest.
"Food for thought," Havase nodded behind him. "But your friends have wandered much too far away, if you don't go now you might lose them and end up tripping over him as he sleeps."
...it was unlikely, but the point seemed to have been made.
Tethys could do nothing more than narrow his eyes in quiet suspicion as he stepped backwards a number of times. He still had questions, but the strange lion was right that it was unwise to fall behind, especially when the day would be coming to end in a few hours. He still had several questions, but for now they would have to be reserved for later... If he ever saw the lion again (something he now assumed quite possible), then perhaps he might be able to pick his brain.
Havase did nothing more than smile pleasantly as the pale lion finally turned away and jogged after his companions.
He certainly was a strange one, but Havase had always been the optimist. The boy deserved his chance, even if the brown lion predicted he might stumble more than once along the way...Words (Havase): 277 Words (Tethys): 222 Total Words (Havase): 819 Total Words (Tethys): 724
