He was a long way from home.

In a change of scenery he was also in the warmest place in the history of lion kind and he had been around freaking sulfur pits. He hadn't even known he could sweat, not like this at least. The sun was perhaps the most unforgiving thing he had ever experienced and he had to say that he was most certainly not a fan of this particular locale. If his quarry had managed to survive out here, then he was clearly going to have to put a number of his tacticians back to work.

He was white and he was sweltering, anything black would be dead... so they must have had a secret.

Nevertheless he had shut down the numerous complaints of his warband and had made their reason for being here abundantly clear. The sooner they could scout the area properly and reassure themselves that nothing could live out here, the better. Alternatively if they found something living in this particular region, then they had better not fit in with the descriptions they didn't want to hear.

Provided all went according to plan, he wouldn't be a roast lamb chomp by the end of the evening...or so he hoped.

First snow, now a furnace.

Why'd he decide to do this again?

User ImageThere was a strange smell on the air. One of many lions, and yet none were nearby. Saran was watching from under the shade of one of the few strange trees that grew in the desert, eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of movement. She wasn't a fighter, but that didn't mean she would leave her pride and flee in the face of danger. She had children here now to protect, even though they were big enough to do so themselves now.

Finally, movement. A white lion appeared through the shimmering heat rising from the sand. She froze in the shadow of the tree, eyes tracking his movements. He didn't seem to have anyone else with him despite the breeze telling her that there were others. There was no where for them to hide, so perhaps they were far and the wind was simply fooling her.

As he drew closer, she noticed rather wonderful markings adorning his face. Ever the opportunist, she rose to her paws and began to stride towards the stranger, eyes half-lidded and a coy smile on her face. Saran wasn't the type to fight for glory, but she was more than content to provide the pride with worthy, strong cubs. As her current brood no longer needed her to survive, she could set her sights on another target. While this male wasn't nearly as large as the last, he was clearly strong to have survived the heat and demands the desert made. Plus his markings were to die for.

"What brings you here, traveler?" she purred as she drew within earshot, tail flicking behind her in an alluring manner. "Surely you're not lost? These lands are not forgiving to those who lose their way."

He was well versed enough to know what that look meant by now, but rather than react to that with flirtation he simply raised his brow. The desert certainly didn't compliment him, in fact he would go so far as to hate it, and yet here he was eyeing up a lioness who didn't seem to have too many issues with dealing with the weather. Evidently if you lived in a place long enough you adapted to it, perhaps her paws were completely fire proof.

"Everything I do is done with purpose," he replied smoothly, an indication that he certainly wasn't lost even if he didn't particularly enjoy what the area had to offer. "And I would go so far as to say you're stating the obvious when it comes to these lands being inhospitable," he glanced around briefly and raised a brow. "There's damn all here, I have to wonder what you survive on..."

He paused thoughtfully.

"Maybe you survive on air, I've heard stranger things," he mused and then shook his head. "How well do you know these lands, excluding your apparent ability to survive in them without too much issue?"

Ooh, she liked a male that did things with purpose. There was nothing wrong with a confident male, and in fact she prized it over those that came off as meek or too polite. He had an air about him of knowing exactly what he was doing at all times and that was enough to keep her interested.

"Perhaps I do," she said with a teasing tone to her voice. "I know them better than you, which should be all that matters," she added, giving him a little smirk before turning and heading back for her tree.

"You've been in the sun for a while it seems. Come rest in the shade." She glanced over her shoulder, pausing as she waited for him to follow. With such a pale coat the heat of the sun wouldn't bother him too much, but it would easily burn him thanks to the lack of protection to his skin. It was both a curse and blessing she had come to notice the lighter members in the pride suffered in their new lands. She, on the other hand, was a perfect tone to not suffer from the heat nor the pain the sun could cause.

The universe had decided that he would be subject to the attentions of every female who might have any form of guile or sass. He didn't seem to be able to take two paces without stumbling upon one who was clearly more intelligent than they let on. Either that, or they happened to know they were intelligent and had the arrogance to back it up. It didn't mean they were flawless...but he was beginning to sense a pattern in the direction in which his life was taking him.

As she made her move towards her tree, he concluded that in these circumstances it would be in his best interests to follow her. He knew that look, he also knew that tone, and he knew all too well that he wasn't going to get a damned thing out of her unless he participated in her game. Better yet? She was absolutely right, she knew this locale better than he did and if he gambled upon finding another feline out here he'd be in for a bad time.

Thus, it was with a raised brow that the lion followed after the lioness towards the shade. Truthfully it would be a welcome change, if it gave him and his paws a chance to cool off, then he would probably be able to explore a little more... Even if he had made a mental note to remain in throwing distance of the borders so that he could return to less deadly lands.

"Then you'll have to humour me," he murmured as he came to her side. "Even if you want to answer with riddles or otherwise," he mused with a wry smile.

Saran was pleased to see the male following her. He could have turned and walked away, of course, but she had the feeling he wanted to know about the vast sands that lay before them. Truth be told, she didn't know much about them either. They had only just arrived at the edge of the desert a week or so ago and she hadn't gone out to explore. She knew why the Nergui had come, but she wasn't about to tell this stranger that.

Laying down, she rolled a bit of her weight to one side, the paw without all the weight on it curling up against her chest. She surveyed the white male once more, tail flicking at the flies that buzzed in the shade.

"Oh no, riddles aren't my thing," she said with an amused tone of voice. "Handsome lions wandering around the desert are my thing." It was clear what she wanted by this point if it hadn't been before, and Saran was certainly willing to give him what he wanted in exchange for what she was after.

"Is there anything specific you'd like to know about the sands?" she asked, tilting her head just a bit. Although she herself hadn't been here long, scouts had gone ahead to explore the lands. She knew they were hostile and unforgiving, but that within them were little spots with water and lush trees and dens, the marks of a pride that had been here long ago still present.

Everything came at a price out here; he was beginning to grow accustomed to such exchanges. Had it not been for the fact that he required diplomacy to achieve a portion of his goals, he knew quite a few of his brothers would have ignored this convention and simply taken what they wanted. As it stood, the lion regarded the lioness for a few moments as he weighed up his options.

Well, it wasn't as if it would take long and provided she gave him what he needed it would be a fair exchange. Besides, she wasn't terrible to look at, he was hardly going to turn his nose up at the female...if he was going to, he would have done so long ago!

"Just a few things," he said finally and settled himself under the tree, immediately releasing a relieved sigh at the worst of the heat being off him. "You haven't been privy to any foreigners in the area, typically yielding strange plants, all generally identical in appearance?" he asked curiously. He wasn't expecting to go into any further detail on this one. Given how open and exposed this area was there was virtually nowhere out here to hide, if they had been this way then someone would have seen them... especially if that someone happened to call this place home...

Saran's smirk only grew as the white male settled himself in the shade beside her, giving her a good look at the strange, horn-like markings that curled around his eyes. Surely that was the mark of a god, one that she hoped would be passed down to any cubs she might have after this encounter. The male she had sought before had given each of her cubs size and markings that other lions could only wish for, and while this male wasn't nearly as big as he had been, he certainly wasn't anything to scoff at.

As he posed his question her green eyes narrowed a bit in thought. Foreigners that weren't the Nergui...no, she hadn't seen any towards the end of their march. Strange plants other than the one they were laying beneath? No, she hadn't seen much vegetation at all. Generally identical? What was this, a roaming band of siblings?

"No, I have not. And nor has anyone else in my pride," she confirmed. "Word would spread quickly. We don't take kindly to other groups of lions infringing on our territory." It was new territory at that, but she again kept that to herself. "Are you hunting these identical foreigners?" she asked, shifting a paw to rest on his, an interested tone to her voice.

Perhaps these sands were simply too inhospitable for the phantoms.

...Unsurprisingly this came as a great relief to him.

"Something like that," he replied vaguely. He wouldn't provide information to those who really didn't need it, some would respond badly and it could jeopardise his already carefully laid out plans. Thus, all she really needed to know was that he was seeking individuals of that description and nothing more... Particularly when it seemed her pride were about as pleasant as the sands they had chosen to reside on.

"Nevertheless if you haven't seen them, then I can check this location off as a negative hit," he chuckled. "Not that I will complain, this place is ridiculously warm and I don't think I would be the most popular Captain in existence if I ordered a band through here in the long term," he mused.

...Frankly, he might end up with a mutiny.

"Thank you for the information though, fortune smiled upon me by placing you in my path," he raised a brow. "Evidently someone didn't want me spending too much time here, for which I am very grateful," he concluded.

Saran snorted very softly at the male's eagerness to not be here any longer. She couldn't blame him, really. Were the potential treasures that awaited the Nergui not here, she would hate this place as well. Saran was a very content lioness for the time being, though, even with the heat and the sand. She had strong children already making her proud, she had a new potential sire for more strong cubs, and she was more than pleased with how the Nergui were settling in to their new home.

"Just enough time," she agreed, letting her tail flick a bit more before shifting her weight to allow her head to reach under his, nudging his chin in a nuzzle. "I'm glad I could help you find what you were seeking," she added, pushing her nose into his mane to nuzzle his neck. "Now, perhaps, you may return the favor?"

If there was one thing Saran was, it was persistent. He had gotten what he wanted and now she wanted what she was after. Then he'd be free to leave this sun-scorched land.

No one was ever going to believe the level of 'success' he seemed to have with females out here. Oh there might have been some freeborn females who had their sights set on him as husband material, but they didn't exactly throw themselves at him in this way. When the females of these lands wanted something they generally made it absolutely clear.

He lips pressed into a thin line as he was nuzzled, and then he quietly reminded himself that he hadn't been under any allusions, this was what the lioness had appeared to have wanted from the very beginning. This wasn't the first time he had acquiesced to such a request and it probably wouldn't be the last, even if it was amusing to think that it was now a duty rather than for pleasure!

Nevertheless he did provide the lioness with what she wanted; there was no guarantee he would end up as the sire of any offspring, but if he did...then he could at least acknowledge they might be raised in a pride that wouldn't require his intervention this time...
