When Xilarn set out on his own in the evening, nearly a full week since he and Damissan had departed Yera together, he was struck by the recollection that it just didn't often happen that he had to hunt without company. Not with Damis' company, of course, though the younger man had expressed an interest in learning to be more useful (Xil was still a bit hesitant in bringing Damissan anywhere when he was fairly certain his companion was as likely to disrupt their chances of dinner as not). But previously, nearly always since Xil was sixteen, Gadot had been present.

He wasn't now, and Xilarn was struck with the startling realization that hunting was harder than he'd ever given it credit for.

Gadot could track. Gadot could kill. Gadot could carry whatever Xilarn couldn't. And Xil just hadn't ever needed to put that much effort into it. He was more of a guiding hand for the natural instincts of a predator, a gentle reminder to set things back on the right path if they started to go awry, and the preparation crew for when they were ready to butcher what they'd caught.

They didn't mean he couldn't hunt, just the the whole experience was less enjoyable.

Fortunately, Tale was abundant in wild things, much more so than his homeland in Oba or even his residence in Sauti, and fortunately for Damis, the wildlife didn't consist predominantly of bugs, a fact Xilarn had very courteously taken into account when he set off that evening. Really, Xil would've eaten just about anything, though. They'd spent the whole day walking and had opted to be more conservative with the purchase of supplies in Yera.

So, he was hungry, and when the first flutter of movement caught his eye, many yards across the Tale savanna, he'd already decided that was what he wanted. Xilarn crept nearer through the long Tale grasses, crouched low, spear in hand, gaze intent and focused. It felt like something barbarians would do, and for a fraction of a second, he was sixteen again, a little boy just learning how to survive away from home.

Then his prey lifted its head, and the sensation vanished. Xilarn had never been so foolish as to hunt something of that size when he was younger. He might go so far as to say he never had.

But the meat of an adult kinfa could feed them for days, even if there was no feasible way of bringing it all back. What he could carry would be enough, surely, until another chance for more came around.

Whatever noise he'd made previously did not alarm the bird. It was large, with no known natural predators to speak of besides earthlings. And there were no villages of earthlings around for at least a hundred miles in either direction. It thought it was safe here. It feared nothing. Then Xilarn stood. He already has his arm pulled back, weapon ready in that one fluid motion. The kinfa didn't even recognize him as a threat immediately, not until the glint of the steel of his blade shown in its eyes.

It made a ringing squawk of a sound, it's wings fanned out, and it pushed from the earth with one mighty flap.

But too late. When Xil threw his spear, it slashed through the tendons of its wing, snapping bone from body, and it kept going to bury hard and deep into the sinewy contours of its neck. The bird dropped back to the earth in a heap. Xilarn stood quietly for a moment, watching the body intently until-

Wild thrashing and pitiful cried ensued. No, he hadn't thought he'd be so lucky as to kill it with one blow. Not something that size, and not with just the strength he had from throwing a blade. But at least it didn't pick itself off the ground and only continued to writhe in its nest. Hesitantly, Xilarn stepped closer for inspection. He pulled a knife from his boot and circled to approach on the slightly less dangerous side of things.

What a delicious and terrifying giant monster.

It tossed it's head to stare back at him, and Xilarn didn't wait to see what it would think of him up close. He finished it with a quick slice across its neck and stepped far enough away that any dying convulsions wouldn't manage to do him any harm. In hardly a moment, it was silent and still, with only the wind rustling its feathers.

Good. Good. At least that part was done. There was no feasible way to drag the full of his catch back to camp, so he had no choice but to start rending meat from bone now. He stepped in again, crouched, and-

Chirrup! Chiiirrup!"

Xilarn stilled. The kinfa didn't move. Or at least, that kinfa didn't.

From beneath its fallen frame he could see something wiggling, something small and complaintive writhing from beneath the heavier beast dead, lifeless, and plastered unmovingly atop it. The smaller, infant kinfa popped free with an annoyed chirp. It stood, ruffled its wings, and chattered angrily at the body of what Xilarn could only assume was... it's mother.

He bit his tongue, pinched his eyes shut, and groaned softly. He hated birds. He hated them. But there was only one thing for it. He couldn't leave it.

Which meant, whether he had a fully formed reason for it or not, the beast had to come with him.
