The Idea Begins
As had been the usual as of late, when weekends came around, Kodi found herself not really knowing what to do. Things just seemed... quiet. Lonely even. It wasn't that she didn't have any friends. And she could certainly call or visit her family. But there was... something. Lonely was the only word that would come to mind to explain how she felt. She'd even tried to have a weekend marathon of all the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies!
She curled up more into the small love seat in her apartment, finishing the last few sips of her mint and honey tea. Something... she needed something to do!
Groaning, Kodi forced herself to get up off the couch. She walked towards her kitchen and placed the empty mug into the sink, staring at it blankly. Her fingers tapped the edge of the counter before, on a whim, she decided to go for a walk.
Hair quickly tossed in a pony tail and boots pulled on, she grabbed her purse, locked up her apartment and just started walking. There was no real destination in mind. Kodi just let her feet wander where they chose. She walked several blocks, passing by Barry's bakery, the little sushi place she loved, and a few other establishments she'd frequented. But none of them called to her today. In fact, she wasn't even feeling hungry! Strange, she thought.
A small shop, tucked behind a large tree and bus stop, caught her eye and Kodi paused in her wandering. There were several people that would walk by, stop, look in the window excitedly, then keep moving. Some even ventured into the coffee (at least she thought it was coffee) shop next door. Curious, Kodi crossed the street - after making sure no cars were coming - to peer in the window. She was greeted by a bouncing ball of fur who decided to put on a show and tackle the other two fluff balls in the kennel with it. Laughing, Kodi watched what she assumed was a little French Bulldog tackle the chocolate Lab puppy. The two rolled around, barking, tails wagging and having a grand time playing.
Still laughing, Kodi headed inside. It was a small shop, like you'd most likely find inside the big malls. There were multiple walls set up as kennels with all kinds of puppies in various states. Many were happy with butt's wriggling and tongues lolled out. A few were just curled up and being anti-social.
Kodi had no idea how long she actually spent in the little pet shop, playing with the puppies in their playpen, laughing at the antics of those still in their kennels. She spoke with several people as they made their way in and by the time she couldn't ignore the hunger rumble from her stomach, she felt much better.
Heading out a little reluctantly, Kodi said a final goodbye to the little boxer puppy she'd played with the most. As she started on her way to grab a quick bite and head home, she kept thinking about all those puppies.
Maybe that's what she needed. A different kind of companion.
She totally need to find a puppy!

Some Purchases Are Made
It had been exactly one week since she'd gone to visit the cute little pet shop. And it still weighed heavily on her mind. Or to be more accurate, the idea of actually getting a pet. There was a lot to take into consideration. The most important being if she could even have a pet in her apartment. But that turned out to be a simple matter and the answer had been yes.
That was one thing marked off her list.
The next was if she could even afford it. At first, she felt disheartened, looking up dogs online and what breeders would ask for them. Then she'd look at the local pet shops and felt a growing fear that it wasn't to be. But then, a couple nights ago while she was doing homework and had the TV turned on low, a commercial for the animal shelter came on. And then it clicked. She could check the local shelters and pounds! There was hope once again.
It was probably a mixed blessing that her homework load for the weekend was light and she'd managed to get it all done Friday night. But that also meant she hadn't spent much time really preparing for what she was about to do. There were supplies that needed buying. Moving things around the apartment that could have been potential chew toys. Investigating what vet clinics were decent and affordable. All of which hadn't fully crossed her mind until Saturday.
Kodi began to stress a little, running around to the pet stores and picking out a food and a water bowl, a doggie bed, a few toys and some dog food. Yet she held off on getting a collar. It would have to be the perfect collar to match her new pet. Which meant she needed to find said pet first.
By the time she was done finding all the supplies she should have gotten before, it was early evening. Not enough time to poke around the shelters.
That disheartened feeling threatened to overwhelm her. She was so ready to find a pet but it felt like Fate was just finding ways to delay it. Was she not meant to find her furry companion?
Sleep did not come easy to her that night. She was too anxious and afraid that if she didn't find the perfect friend tomorrow, it was never going to happen.
At some point, she did fall asleep. Her dreams were filled with a four-legged furry companion, frolicking around the park with her. When she awoke the next morning, Kodi clung to her hope. Yes, she knew that not everyone found their perfect companion in one day. But she was damned determined to do so!
The first shelter she visited was small, only housing around twenty dogs and a few cats. There were some adorable dogs that she loved, but none of them had that... "zing" of the perfect match.
It was a similar outcome at the second shelter. Though one of the dogs kept rolling around in the back of her mind. It had been a big old goofy mutt who tripped over his feet. He was a maybe.
She'd saved the Destiny City Pound for last, knowing there would be a lot of animals housed there. And she certainly wasn't disappointed. Kodi walked slowly up and down the kennels, stopping to visit with each dog. Many of them were very sweet and eager to win your affection. However, one in particular refused to come up to the kennel gate, glowering at everyone from a little crate. A few people ignited growls from the poor thing. Glancing at the sheet, the bio informed her that it was a male corgi mix of some sort. Looking back at him, Kodi found herself crouching down to his level and watching him. He never growled or looked away. Simply regarded her curiously.
"Why hello, mister Corgi." She said cheerfully. "You don't like crowds, do you?" A flick of an ear was her response, followed by a yawn.
"You are quite handsome. I bet you'd like to play?" Kodi continued to remain crouched down and watching the corgi. And after a brief period of time, he slowly got to his paws and stretched. His big ears were always alert and eyes seemed more intelligent then they should have been. But there was mischief in there as well. Slowly, he moved toward her until he was sitting in front of her. Bravely (or stupidly) sticking her fingers through the fence of the gate, she scratched him behind the ears. He leaned into it and made a contended sigh before turning to lick her fingers eagerly.
"Wow." A voice startled her from behind, causing the corgi to start barking like he wanted to chew on something. Or someone. Kodi glanced up at one of the volunteers that worked there. "You must be some kinda dog whisperer." He stated. "I ain't seen that one warm up to anyone." He looked skeptical as the corgi continued to bark.
"I want to adopt him." Kodi replied without even thinking. But it felt right. "He's perfect." She murmured, looking back at her brave little corgi.
"Really?" There was some relief in his eyes. "He's been on our risk list." He admitted. "I'm happy someone wants him."
"I do. He's exactly what I was looking for, I think." Standing, Kodi smiled at the corgi. "I'll be right back. You sit here and wait for me!" Both were surprised when he did just that. Sat down and stopped barking to wait.
It didn't take too long to fill out all the paperwork. One brave soul even ventured into the kennel to put a leash on the corgi and bring him out to Kodi. His whole butt wriggled as he happily jumped up for pets. It made all of them laugh as she took the leash.
"Corgi's are so funny." Another volunteer said. "I read once, that they are considered the 'dwarf' breed of dogs. With those little stumpy legs."
"Thank you." She told the volunteers, laughing again at the reference, as she turned to her new companion. "Are you ready to go to your new home?" More butt wiggling and a happy bark.
"Alright! Let's go home, my brave little....dwarf!" She cooed, a feeling of elation filling her. Fate had given her exactly what she needed. The perfect furry companion to keep her company.
And she had the perfect name in mind.
