It had been a pretty average kind of day. After the children were off to school Morginn went around cleaning up any of the messes they'd made (not that there was a ton, they were usually neat for children, but stuff still happened), then he focused on his own school work. There would be lunch, then he would spend time with his familiars and either sketch new clothing designs or actually create things. Since he made more clothes than the family could go through in a decade he ended up donating a lot of stuff. Usually at some point one of the adults in the house would make some kind of dinner before the children got home. And that was how everything had been going, before Morginn heard a muttered oath from the direction of the kitchen.

The Fey poked his head out of his room and looked down the all. "Alrai," he called out, having identified the tone as too low to be Araceae. "You okay?"

I have finally done it! And hopefully it isn't too lamesauce, given how long it took me to start this up XD

User ImageAlrai knew it was dangerous to cook while distracted. It was what he constantly harped to Arinas when he was teaching his oldest son how to cook, but his mind kept flittered back to the conversation he had just had with the creature that should have been his mother. They had never gotten along. Alrai hadn’t turned out to be the perfect older son, but what had they seriously expected getting a black market crystal and freaking awakening it in the middle of October. However that was an old wound. He had made his peace with the fact he was never going to have a loving family. He had a new one now.

Or so he had thought. His mother had just called to say that his father had been hospitalized and had asked for Alioth’s new phone number. Alrai was practically furious and somewhat hurt. He wasn’t sure how he felt about the news his father was really sick, but Alioth was still somewhat close with their parents and he wanted to be there for his younger brother.
So it was only a matter of time until he slipped up on cutting the vegetables and sliced his finger. His hand went incoporeal seconds later as the blade completely the way through, but he hadn’t phased fast enough and his finger had gotten pretty sliced up.
“Ah… Morginn, could I trouble you for the first aid kit? I think Arinas ran off with the rest of the Band-Aids in the last kid adventure” He replied hesitantly.

Morginn felt a twinge of alarm and called out an assent. He quickly made sure there was nothing out on his work table that could cause trouble (his familiars were insatiably curious sometimes), then trotted to the bathroom to fetch the first aid kit where it was stored. He made his way to the kitchen, uttering a small noise of distress and sympathy when he saw the wound. He sent the kit down on the table and began rummaging in it.

"How did you manage to cut yourself up so badly? I don't think I've ever seen you have even a minor kitchen accident before," Morginn exclaimed, pulled out a roll of bandages, ointment, and gauze. He looked back towards the wound, wondering if these supplies would do it or not, or if they'd have to make a trip to the hospital. It was hard to tell how bad the cut was under the blood. Surely if it had been that bad Alrai would have said something. Morginn was probably just fussing. He grabbed a few paper towels and gestured for Alrai to let him see his hand.

With a sigh he used his good hand to move the dinner supplies out of the way and to put his hand under the water. No use accidently dripping blood on everything. He’d see about trying to clean it out with soap but at this point it really hurt. Arinas was luck sometimes with his litch blood, even though if Alrai really thought about it, the dampening of feeling worried him a lot. He was brought back out of his thoughts again as Morginn walked in with the first aid kit.

“Ah well perks of being part geist, body parts can turn incorporeal to avoid damage.” Alrai tried teasing. Actually that was probably why he didn’t have to go to a hospital. “However the truth was, I stupidly decided to cook while being distracted. It was a dumb move” but Arinas had been asking for a certain dish for over two weeks now and Alrai finally had some time off from school to be home during dinner to make it. He moved the injured hand towards Morginn to take a look making sure to tone down the glow in his wisps.

Morginn frowned as he rested Alrai's hand in one of his and used the other to wrap the towels around the cut. It had already resumed bleeding, despite being rinsed. It looked more serious than a simple little nick. "That's still not like you. What were you thinking about so hard that made you forget there was a finger under your knife," he asked, his voice a mixture of concern and teasing.

Keeping his hold on the paper towels he reached back with his other hand and picked up the little ointment tube, carefully unscrewing the cap one-handed and applying a bit to the gauze. He checked the would beneath the paper towels. It had stopped bleeding briefly, but with the pressure remove blood began to trickle forth again. Morginn shifted the towel a little and resumed the application of pressure as he picked up the ointment-smeared gauze.

"I don't think you need stitches, but you still got yourself pretty good," he commented, brow slightly furrowed as his feathery antennae wiggled about.

Alrai bit his lower lip as he watched Morginn’s actions. He had obviously worried the Fey and Morginn did have a point. However it was true that he had made his peace with the whole situations so why… why was it getting him so worked up. Was it for Alioth or even Arinas? The state of his finger was further proof that the whole situation was bothering him and now it was causing him to bother other people.

“I got a phone call…” He reluctantly forced himself to finally say. “It wasn’t… I haven’t talked to my parents for years. They did some stupid things when they awoke me and so they pretend they don’t have an older son, and I pretend that I don’t have parents for the most part. My younger brother recently changed his phone number and so they called the house today to get Alioth’s phone number. We ended up in an argument and I learned Arinas’s Grandfather was in the hospital. I guess the phone call bothered me more than I thought” well that was the most slimmed down version ever.

“Well considering how hard I was chopping the vegetables I guess I am glad it wasn't worse. Sorry for the bother though.”
Alrai said with a light slightly unfocused tone. He shook his head to clear the thoughts that were trying to form. He hated whenever they called, absolutely hated it. It made him a basket case for the rest of the day.

Morginn listened as he carefully applied the gauze to Alrai's finger, then reached back and snagged some bandages. He was careful not to add too many layers of wrapping, not wanting to make the finger feel too bulky or awkward, though when he tied it off he put the neat knot over the wound for the added pressure.

As Alrai talked Morginn felt his cheeks puff a little with indignation, and his antennae were almost completely upright and rigid, though they did tremble slightly.

"Well that's perfectly horrible, to blame a child for something out of their control, and if they can't see that then it's their loss," Morginn said firmly. Frankly he couldn't imagine any kind of scenario that would make him want to deny either of his children. He packed the ointment and extra gauze back into the first aid kit, but decided to leave it out just in case the wound started bleeding more than he thought it would.

"It was no bother at all. Actually," Morginn said, as he tossed the bloodied paper towels and glanced over at the kitchen counter, "it looks like you were still in the middle of cooking. I can help, if you tell me what needs to be done." He looked back at Alrai's hand. "It'll probably be hard to do some things until that heals up a bit."

Alrai couldn’t help himself and a smile escaped. Luckily he was able to hold back the laughter that wanted to escape. Morginn’s reaction was familiar, still every time his side was picked over his parents something in his chest eased.

“I quite agree. The whole mess was completely they’re doing. I guess I just remind them of all of their failures.” Alrai agreed. Still they did have their uses. He was able to buy this house and he was able to help both Morginn and Araceae with housing costs so they could focus more on their own families and school. “But I guess somewhere in there a part of me still wishes it could be different. Even if I have a new family now. So I get distracted and well things like this happen.”

“Well I am actually making shepard’s pie”
Alrai admitted and then looked over where the squash was currently placed “And I do a squash and cheese dish as a side since Arinas loves the texture and swears sometimes he can taste it. However tangent aside, help would be lovely. ”

Morginn still look moth-like levels of fluffed out in indignation, though he gave a sympathetic nod for Alrai's plight. His parents were the really flitter-brained type, all laughs and dancing and being in the moment. They were quite loving people, if a bit scattered (even for Fey), but it raised the question of what if. Not that Morginn could guess and even if he posed the question to his parents they would likely just laugh and shrug, but he liked to believe that they would still have loved him just the same. They might be scattered and in-the-moment people, but he'd never seem them take a negative view on anything.

Such thoughts wouldn't help Alrai though, so all he said was, "Nothing wrong with that. It's an admirable wish. Though," he added, once again looking like a fluffy moth, "if they ever call again while you're cooking I will find them and I will convince all the flowers in their gardens to go dormant!" Not exactly a terrifying prospect to face, but probably the closest to violent threat Morginn ever got.

His antennae and wings relaxed a bit as Alrai pointed over towards the squash he had been cutting. Thankfully there didn't seem to be more than a spot or two of blood, and none of it was on the squash itself. Just to be safe Morginn washed the vegetable and set it aside, then proceeded to thoroughly clean the knife, cutting board, and counter.

"So how do I do this," he asked over the sound of running water. "I kind of willy nilly things when I cook. Does it have to be cut a specific way?"

Alrai’s shoulders shook as he tried to continue to keep in his laughter which was getting harder to hold back. It wasn’t as if the situation was funny but the fluffed out levels of indignation seemed to touch something in Alrai and it was more happy laughter then funny laughter. Still he didn’t want to come out rude so he was trying his best to keep it back. He shook his head and turned back to what he still needed to do for the cooking.

He had the potatoes soaking and cooking so they’d be ready soon to make homemade mash potatoes. He had the corn and the cream of corn already ready. He just needed to cook the hamburger meat and then put it all together and stick in the over for ten minutes. It was then that Morginn decided to stop doing his kind of cute moth imitation and spoke.

Laughter finally escaped him at Morginn’s threat. He wasn’t even sure that his parents had a garden or cared about the garden if they had one, but still he understood what Morginn was trying to say. “Well I make sure if they call again they get the message. I am sure they will be most chastised. Still thank you Morginn”

“Now for the squash. There are a different variety of ways to cook them but for now just cut them into ring like squashes and then cut those into some into cubes.”
Alrai stated, “but really there isn’t any set way as long as they all fit into that pot over there”

Morginn nodded, apparently satisfied that his threat would be passed on and heeded. He set the now-clean cutting board down on the counter and placed the squash on top of it, then took up the now-clean knife and eyeballed the squash to figure out the best way to go about cutting up the vegetable. Standing nearly a full foot and a half shorter than Alrai, he probably looked a lot less cool doing the same tasks.

While his kitchen skills tended to be at the level of sandwich- or salad-making, or heating up canned food, Morginn at least was decent enough with a bladed instrument. He cut the squash straight down until he had a bunch of circles, then proceeded to cut them up into almost perfectly even cubes. Looked like practice at precisely cutting fabric could be good for other things too!

"Done," he proclaimed, looking over his handiwork with a bit of pride. Not that he had any clue what to do with all the little cubed bits of squash. He just knew it was tasty and he would happily eat it if presented with it, but it fell outside his cooking expertise so he'd never handled it before. "What next?"

Alrai moved around, gathering things that he could with out needing to use his injured hand. He didn't want to just sit there and stand hovering over Morginn while he cooked. He wasn't lying when he said there was really no wrong way at least for the purposes that he needed the squash for. He did occasionally look back to make sure everything was okay though.

Looking up he made s note that he would probably have to have Morginn pull out some bowls and some pans that were at an odd height he couldn't pull them down with out two hands. When Morginn spoke up Alrai walked back over.

"So since I also have finish cooking the potatoes and fix the corn for the pie we're going to use the pressure cooker for the squash to save on stove space. If you can put about half a cup of water in the pot, I'll set everything else up since I only really need one hand for it"Alrai replied. "But the squash looks excellent so far"

Morginn gave the pressure cooker a doubtful glance. The thing always made him a little nervous. He had to remind himself that he would be okay, that he wasn't actually using the pressure cooker so much as being Alrai's hands.

Okay, maybe not, but the thought still helped!

He went to the cabinet and pulled out the measuring cup (with a little bit of reaching to grab it), then proceeded to put the specified amount of water into the pressure cooker. "Squash goes in next, right," he asked, reaching for the cutting board.

As he gathered the pieces, pushing them together in easy to grab mounds, he hesitated a bit. It was still bothered him, what Alrai had told him, but he wasn't sure if asking questions would upset him.

"Your brother," he started a little hesitantly, then continued. "I don't think I've ever heard you talk about him much. Do you two...fight as well?" Morginn glanced over at Alrai curiously, ready to apologize if his questioning appeared to upset him.

Alrai looked on with a slight fondness. He was well acquainted with that look. Since all of the adults in the household where still getting through university it made sense to get a pressure cooker. After all you set it up before you ran out for the day and it was ready by the time one of you got home. Still Arinas had wanted to learn how to use it so on one of his off days Alrai had shown him. Arinas had been casting the pressure cooker practically the same glance Morginn was using on it currently.

"Yes... I can actually set up all the technical things. I only need one hand for it"
he replied. He frowned though when Morginn hesitated.

"well we occasionally fight but nothing more than harmless brotherly stuff"
Alrai answered. "He's just 8 years younger than I am and a lot more social so we don't hang out very often. However I definitely get a long with him way more than I do with my parents. I call him mostly when I'm coming home from university since he's still in academy. I've been meaning to have him over to meet everyone. but he always seemingly comes over when you guys are out"

Morginn began to scoop up the squash bits and add them to the pressure cooker as Alrai talked. His antennae perked upward at the answer and his shoulder relaxed a bit. Good, he hadn't upset Alrai! Or, well, he hoped he hadn't, but it didn't seem like there were any red flags.

"Maybe he's scared of us," Morginn suggested as he dropped the last bits of squash into the pot and scooted out of the way, looking at Alrai and grinning. "I mean you and Araceae are cool and respectable adults, and Arinas is pretty calm. The rest of the occupants in this house are pure chaos who would likely begin a barrage of questions."

He laughed at his unashamed inclusion of himself with the children. By pretty much anyone's standards he was curious and energetic, though he hoped he did have a little more tact than an average child. But nosy, he was definitely that!

To be honest though, the only questions he could think to ask off the top of his head...involved Alrai. What he looked like as a kid, if he was as cool then as now, interesting moments. Morginn almost blushed. His questions would probably make him sound like he had the biggest crush on Alrai. And he didn't!

Did he?

He used watching Alrai poke at the pressure cooker as an excuse to watch him and evaluated him. His appearance was definitely pleasing to the eye. Strong build, lovely colors, and Morginn had always thought his wings were beautiful in their own unique way.

Yup, definitely time to look away before it seemed like he was staring, because if Alrai caught him he was definitely blush! "Was there anything else that needed tending, or was that the last of it?"
