promoted to parent - essentially raised her younger sisters after the death of her mother and her father's depression and neglect. harbors a lot of bitterness and regret over what she views as the loss of her own childhood as a result.

wise beyond their years - was an extremely mature, resourceful child/adolescent as a result of her upbringing.

parental abandonment - her mother died when she was six, and her father emotionally checked out after being unable to cope with his grief and anger.

troubling unchildlike behavior - was in a serious romantic (if likely not sexual) relationship from the ages of around twelve to fifteen, and eager to be viewed as an adult all the while.

abusive parents - grew up with an emotionally and verbally abusive and neglectful father, who never failed to remind her that he blamed her for the death of her mother.

calling the old man out - snapped and did this at one point, threatening to report her father to the authorities if he mistreated her and her sisters again, and was proud of herself for finally gaining the confidence to even make the threat.

grew a spine - see above; also became noticeably more cold-blooded and firm as she got older.

self-made orphan - inadvertently killed her father when he attempted to murder morven, after discovering she was a werewolf. displayed very little regret over the matter, once the shock had worn off.

patricide - see above.

parental neglect - newlyn's father was at best cold and neglectful, at least emotionally, and at worst, outright abusive.

big brother instinct - big sister, in newlyn's case, but she'd do anything for her younger siblings.

innocent blue eyes - has noticeable blue eyes in contrast to her fair skin and dark hair, generally looks very demure and innocent.

trauma congo line - witnessed mother's violent death at a young age, endured years of abuse and neglect at the hands of her father, her first partner died young from illness, had to deal with her younger sister getting bitten by a werewolf, realized the boy she was falling for was in fact a werewolf... newlyn's had some bad luck.

break the cutie - after jayden's death.

cool big sis - this to elsie, and occasionally (although she'd never admit it) to morven.

emotionless girl - started off as a variation of this; aloof, calm, and rational 90% of the time, although she did have a sweeter, more extroverted side.

straight man - typically this to her more highstrung sisters and jokester husband.

deadpan snarker - this at times, much to the surprise of those who don't know her as well. she has a very quiet, wry sense of humor.

the blue oni - to the more emotional red oni of her sisters and husband.

power trio - with her sisters.

blonde, brunette, redhead - the brunette to elsie's blonde and morven's redhead.

the three faces of eve - the steady, wise wife, compared to her sisters, who could respectively embody the innocent, playful child, and the sexual, bold seductress.

the hecate sisters - the mother/matron (as the oldest of her sisters newlyn has played the mother role for a long time, and is now a wife and biological mother herself).

the kirk - usually plays moderator between the clashing tempers and ideals of her two younger sisters.

the quiet one - compared to her talkative, brash family.

beware the nice ones - she may be extremely calm, patient, and laid-back, but do not deliberately provoke newlyn.

tranquil fury - newlyn, while often exasperated, is not prone to fits of temper or lashing out, so when she is genuinely incensed, it can get very disturbing very fast.

dissonant serenity - see above.

good is not soft - newlyn is at heart a good person who does her best to help out those around her. do not take her kindness for granted.

precision f-strike - when upset or outraged, newlyn tends to break her usual habit of avoiding swearing.

aloof big brother - can come across as this, although she does very much care about her sisters, even if they exhaust her at times.

team mom - considers herself this to the pack at large, even if she isn't a werewolf herself.

only sane man - often feels like this, in contrast with the events going on around her.

morven:

blonde, brunette, redhead - the redhead to her elder sister's brunette and blonde, respectively.

fiery redhead - really more of a strawberry blonde, but morven does have a nasty temper.

sibling yin yang - with elsie, her polar opposite in many respects.

the glorious war of sisterly rivalry - although it died down as they both grew into adult women, they were at each other's throats for much of their childhoods and teen years.

deadpan snarker - to almost everyone, all the time, regardless of the situation.

good is not nice - morven is a (fairly) moral and law-abiding person, who even works to track down criminals, but she's not particularly nice or polite,

b***h in sheep's clothing - has always dressed in a very girlish, feminine manner (with a few notable exceptions), but her love for pink and frills doesn't mean she's a very mild-mannered or even pleasant person.

jerk with a heart of gold - when it comes down to it, she usually has somewhat decent intentions, and is always there for the people she cares about when the chips are down.

tsundere - especially in her interactions with seymour. of the harsh variety.

belligerent sexual tension - with all her partners. morven doesn't know how to flirt in a non-combative manner.

rich b***h - certainly acted like this as a teenager, but in reality her family was never that well off, with a run-down manor house to show for it.

spoiled brat - as a child, this was her default, as it was a surefire way of getting attention, something she was desperate for.

the three faces of eve - the seductress to newlyn's wife and elsie's child.

the hecate sisters - the sharp-tongued crone.

trauma conga line - dead mother, abusive father, bitten by a deranged werewolf, nearly killed by said abusive father when he found out, since dead mother died in werewolf attack... it goes on.

power trio - with her sisters.

beserk button - don't ever threaten newlyn.

parental neglect - grew up with an abusive father who never recovered from the death of her mother.

kicking a** in all her finery - she'll be damned if she's not the best looking one in a fight.

proud beauty - is aware she's attractive, and quite proud of it.

all girls want bad boys - she does seem to go for the... troubled, emotionally unstable type.

broken bird - in the aftermath of contracting lycanthropy, as she was only eleven and had only her older sister, just a teenager herself, to turn to for support.

only sane man - firmly believes she is this, although she can be quite irrational and outrageous herself.

break the haughty - at several points during her teenage years.

kids are cruel - was a very poorly behaved, nasty little girl.

bratty half-pint - as a little girl with a serious attitude problem.

sibling rivalry - with elsie, for newlyn's affection and approval, as their idolized older sister.

commander contrarian - seems to enjoy disagreeing and playing devil's advocate in nearly every situation.

don't you dare pity me - essentially her reaction to being pitied for her lycanthropy.

child hater - does not have the best opinion of children, which is a bit amusing, given her own terrible misbehavior as a child.

jerkass has a point - and when she does, she never lets it go.

teens are monsters - the embodiment of the dreaded teenage girl during her adolescence.

our werewolves are different - well, they are.

fur against fang - can identify vampires by smell, not particularly fond of them (but she's wary of fellow werewolves as well, unless they're in her pack).

the baby of the bunch - much to her annoyance, her older sisters have always considered her their baby sister in need of scolding and protecting.

black sheep - considers herself this, but her sisters do love and accept her, even if they fight.

chaotic neutral - as newlyn once put it, she seems to be at her best when everything is descending into chaos.

finishing each other's sentences - with her twin brother, toby.

sibling seniority squabble - jess is fifteen minutes older than her twin, and resents him trying to play the big brother.

trickster twins - as a child with toby.

twin banter - whenever she and toby are together, to the exasperation of everyone else in the vicinity.

plucky girl - as a child and teenager. relentlessly optimistic in the face of adversity.

action girl - when the situation calls for it.

big brother instinct - as a sister, with her younger siblings, particularly lea.

the fashionista - is not clothing-obsessed, but does like shopping and being well-dressed.

genki girl - never shut up as a kid, was always very exuberant and bubbly.

animal motif - is an animagus, and her form is that of a hummingbird, an incredibly fast, brightly colored bird.

the heart - works as this when with her brothers, given her extremely compassionate nature.

book dumb - often struggled with schoolwork but is quite resourceful and good with tinkering, as she went on to become a spell inventor.

annoying younger sibling - to uriel and lea, despite being older than the latter.

lea:

our vampires are different - well, they are.

romantic vampire boy - averted and subverted. lea is asexual and has no interest in sweeping some naive human off her feet. he's also... not very romantic.

stronger with age - developed the power of object reading several years into being a vampire.

sliding scale of vampire friendliness - has no desire to hurt anyone, and has never fed directly from another human being.

friendly neighborhood vampires - lea's coven, for the most part.

vegetarian vampire - he gets his blood bagged, and finds the idea of preying on innocent humans morally reprehensible, and the idea of feeding off of (ostensibly willing, often young and attractive) humans more than a bit squicky.

voluntary vampire victim - asked to be changed as a form of protection against his murderous father, and to be able to protect his family. it was either that or suicide.

weakened by the light - cannot be outdoors during the day.

wooden stake - is temporarily paralyzed by an impromptu staking during the showdown with cy.

brutal honesty - his lack of social skills make this apparent.

badass bookworm - is exceptionally intelligent and a skilled potioneer, but is also able to look after himself in a fight, especially now that he has enhanced strength and speed.

true neutral - would just like to be left alone.

only sane man - often finds himself surrounded by eccentrics and occasionally, outright lunatics.

aloof big brother - towards vio and dj, especially after the death of thea.

precision f-strike - tends to speak very coarsely when upset.

the quiet one - especially compared to the rest of his family.

deadpan snarker - is often very sarcastic and flat.

straight man - to the twins' antics.

the stoic - often shows very little emotion as a defense mechanism.

break the cutie - after the death of thea, and even moreso after his abduction by his sadistic father.

trauma congo line - born and raised for seven or so years by an abusive and neglectful drug addict mother, was eventually adopted by a loving and kind family, only to be hunted down by his biological father, a cunning sociopath, who murdered his young sister in front of him, and kidnapped and tortured him. then he convinced a sympathetic vampire to help him out...

big brother instinct - was always very protective of thea, and towards vio as well. is currently looking after dj.

parental neglect - his biological mother often left him and thea to fend for themselves for hours at a time.

parental abandonment - his biological mother just up and left him and his sister in a filthy apartment with little food in the middle of winter.

grew a spine - eventually snaps and lashes out.

abusive parents - first his biological mother, then to a much more severe and traumatic degree, his biological father.

troubling unchildlike behavior - displayed this since a very young age, as a result of his treatment by the adults in his life. became very world weary and pessimistic as a result.

black sheep - considers himself this, but his family loves him very much.

sir swears-a-lot - when he's stressed out.

street urchin - during his early years.

archnemesis dad - with roald, although he was not the one to ultimately defeat him.

we can rule together - roald wanted to shape him (harshly) into the perfect son and heir.

calling the old man out - was on the verge of doing this with nearly all his interactions with his father.

big, screwed up family - his paternal line, the pureblooded, deeply dysfunctional bjelkes.

turn out like his father - his worst fear, and why he would never have children, even if he was interested in sex in the first place.

mistaken for gay - his siblings suspected this during his teenage years, as he expressed no interest in girls.

cool big bro - to vio and dj.

long-lost relative - both his father and his younger half-brother.

the klutz - is very clumsy.

evander:

hot-blooded - tries to put on a cold face but has a notoriously short, explosive temper.

hair-trigger temper - a bit more calm as an adult but certainly this in his adolescence.

berserk button - bringing up his younger brother or his mother, threatening his family.

animal motif - shark (his patronus), a deep-sea predator with a dark reputation. this ties into wendy's water theme, as both their patroni are fish species.

badass bookworm - never did as well as his sister in school, to his annoyance, but still very focused on his studies, and enjoys reading. equally capable of kicking some a**.

belligerent sexual tension - with wendy, throughout their teenage years, until they were able to put their pride aside and admit their feelings for one another.

slap-slap-kiss - him and wendy never came to blows, but she did push him in a pool, which he then dragged her into as well.

neutral evil - started as this, although he may have become a bit less malicious over the years.

abusive parents - both his mother and father mistreated him and his siblings throughout their childhoods, although vander was arguably treated the best due to his status as heir.

troubling unchildlike behavior - tended to go into violent rages as a child and even attempted to seriously hurt/possibly attempt to kill his little brother. (although he argues this was justified, as he suspected something was seriously wrong with cyrus).

calling the old man out - does this to his mother, whom he loathes, a few times.

big brother instinct - comes across as more controlling and possessive than anything else, but he doesn't want to see antigone hurt (at least not by anyone but him).

trauma congo line - abusive childhood culminated in his father trying to kill his mother after learning of her affair and his and antigone's true parentage, which was then followed by his mother manipulating his younger brother into killing his father and covering it up. after uncovering the truth of this, vander ended up with a permanently crippled leg and a whole lot of bad memories from the final showdown against cyrus.

the stoic - often comes off as this, but he can be extremely emotional, to the point of making irrational decisions.

the red oni - to his wife's blue oni.

only sane man - considers himself to be this of his family, but that's debatable.

two girls and a guy - when he reluctantly teams up with his cousin, violante, and younger sister, antigone.

sibling yin-yang - compared to his logical, calm younger sister.

parental abandonment - his mother took off after realizing she could no longer control cyrus and was in serious danger of being killed by him as well. vander was not sorry to see her go.

foil - to violante, antigone, and cyrus.

deadpan snarker - quite often.

jerk with a heart of gold - can be this at times, especially when it comes to his wife and children, whom he does truly love and care for.

spoiled brat - as a child, demanding and used to getting his way.

break the haughty - his interactions with wendy and his clash with cyrus.

kids are cruel - was a horrible little boy all too eager to be nasty and spiteful towards his siblings.

bratty half-pint - most adults had this opinion of him as a child/tween.

sibling rivalry - with antigone and cyrus, and in the latter case, taken to the extreme of trying to kill each other.

commander contrarian - seems to just like arguing with people, but especially his wife.

jerkass has a point - he might be an a*****e, but he's not always wrong, just blunt.

big brother instinct - when antigone was in mortal danger during a dark wizard attack, he did try to save her.

family man - becomes this, much to everyone's surprise.

dutiful son - tried his best to be this during his adolescence, but eventually realized his father was wrong, and only cared about him as a symbol of his legacy, not an actual person.

thicker than water - while estranged from antigone, still does consider her his sister and wants to at least attempt to reach some sort of middle ground.

babies ever after - with wendy, fulfilling their dream of having a big, (mostly) happy family.

big brother bully - towards antigone and cyrus.

sir swears-a-lot - despite his proper upbringing, has a notoriously dirty mouth.

papa wolf - would do anything for his children.

teen pregnancy - got wendy pregnant straight away, and they married at 18 and 19, respectively.

arranged marriage - vander was betrothed to wendy when he was about twelve and she thirteen. while initially furious at the prospect of marrying her, they grew to like and even love one another, turning it into a perfectly arranged marriage by the time of the actual wedding.

henpecked husband - anyone whose knows the couple can probably sense that wendy is really the one calling the shots.

unholy matrimony - neither he nor wendy are what you could call 'morally inclined'.

the napoleon - short and often pissed off.

anti-hero - becomes a bit of this, since he's trying to take down cyrus, who is the bigger evil of the two.

politically incorrect hero - can be considered this, due to his prejudices.

cain and abel - with cyrus.

antagonistic offspring - has it out for desdemona.

teens are monsters - not so nice teenager.

lonely rich kid - had pretty much zero friends growing up, despite his family's money.

a*****e victim - usually deserves whatever he gets.

the bad guy wins - doesn't really deserve his peaceful home life and wendy's inherited money/manor house.

the bully - during his early hogwarts years.

save the villain - violante and antigone didn't have to save his a**, but they did.

jerk jock - was slytherin's seeker and an a*****e to his fellow students.

lack of empathy - learned to empathize with others a little too late.

why did you make me hit you? - a despicable example with antigone.

creepy child - maybe a little less so than his younger brother, but still counted as this.

even evil can be loved - him and wendy are bad people, but they do genuinely love and respect one another.

even evil has loved ones - wants what's best for his kids, and to give them a better childhood than his own.

family values villain - devoted to his wife and children.

b*****d b*****d - is in fact his 'uncle's illegitimate son, and not his 'father's' heir. has a bit of a breakdown when this is discovered, and does not handle it well at all.

cyrus:

berserk button - don't ever disparage his magical ability or call him a squib.

chaotic evil - the intelligent monster. one of the few things cy gets pleasure or joy from is ******** other people (and their lives and plans) up.

ax-crazy - veers into this during his final duel with anti.

slasher smile - has displayed this on a few occasions.

cheshire cat grin - known for this.

psychotic smirk - pulled this on vander more than a few times when he got his way.

paying evil unto evil - killed his own father, who was an abusive a*****e with a few sociopathic traits and a murder under his belt. also gave vander one hell of a beat-down in payback for years of abuse and spite.

not so different - pulled this with vio when she was under his control.

cute and psycho - as a child/tween.

creepy child - was more seemingly 'normal' than his siblings, but still had some creepy traits.

enfant terrible - see above.

troubling unchildlike behavor - animal abuse and setting fires, among other things.

deliberately cute child - worked the 'cute and innocent' look to his advantage for as long as possible.

speech impediment - had a noticeable lisp as a child, which drove his father and older brother mad, as they were sure he was exaggerating it (he was).

face of angel, mind of a demon - platinum blond curls and big blue-green eyes. really messed up view of the world.

b***h in sheep's clothing - his modus operandi.

affably evil - at least until he decided to try to murder the rest of the family.

sibling rivalry - taken to violent extremes with vander.

cain and abel - see above.

the sociopath - sees himself as the only person in the world whose wants and needs matter. everyone else is just a pawn or plaything to him.

the unfettered - doesn't have the barriers normal people would when it comes to getting what he wants.

narcissist - more than a little in love with himself.

dude, where's my respect? - the crux of his feelings towards his father, who up until the very end, was unable to admit cy was his son and rightful heir.

never my fault - refuses to accept blame for any of his actions, preferring to pin the blame on literally everyone else.

evil cannot comprehend good - has never felt genuine love or affection for anyone in his life, and is genuinely unsettled by the idea of being willing to sacrifice for the sake of another person.

what you are in the dark - in the dark, cyrus is just a pathetic, frightened child, unable to forge connections with anyone or anything, and left alone to die.

consummate liar - known for lies of all shapes and sizes.

manipulative b*****d - sums him up.

even the guys want him - just as appealing to men as women, and swings both ways.

the casanova - had no difficulty picking up women (or men) in his late teens.

smug snake - is really this underneath, although he displays a lot of false modesty.

it amused me - does terrible things on impulse, knowing he can talk his way out.

you have outlived your usefulness - was going to pull this on desdemona and vio. luckily, both escaped him.

above good and evil - sees himself as having the right to do whatever he likes.

pragmatic villainy - kept his evil plots limited to trying to dominate his family, although had he succeeded he likely would have gone bigger.

vengeance feels empty - at the very end of his life briefly experiences this.

revenge by proxy - technically vio and anti never did anything to directly harm him, but he decided they had to die as well.

the power of hate - what fuels his desire to destroy vander.

blondes are evil - well, he is very blond.

light is not good - fair skin, blond hair, often dressed in pale colors, completely evil.

innocent blue eyes - don't be fooled.

trauma congo line - grew up rejected by his father, manipulated by his mother, and abused by his older brother. even when his magic did come in, he was still treated as the unfavorite and ignored and mocked by vander. when it was finally revealed that he was his father's only son and legitimate heir, he still couldn't get the recognition he craved.

dumb blonde - tried to pass himself off as this a few times, although he's clearly not stupid.

sibling yin yang - light but twisted, compared to anti's dark but good.

parental neglect - his father.

abusive parents - his father verbally and emotionally, his mother psychologically.

mama's boy - as a child.

long-haired pretty boy - to callius and vander's disgust.

four eyes, zero soul - pretty much.

all girls want bad boys - granted, the girls cyrus were with probably didn't know about the murderous intentions.
