Tau grabbed his spear from its stand near the door and padded out of the house, his footsteps quiet. They always left early regardless of whose turn it was to hunt, and with the two new babies it came down to Tau for the next month or so. Liira would be much too weak to do anything.
The air was almost cool with dew - but it was Tale, so Tau’s version of cool was probably very different than most others. His footsteps were silenced by the soft sand and he continued on through the hazy light, the sun just barely winking over the horizon line. He was planning on sticking to the forests today, maybe he could catch some birds for dinner. The trees became more and more dense as he moved away from what had been settled and further into what was wild territory. The sounds of the forest were already intense even with the early morning and Tau kept his ear out for what it was he was looking for; the seraffin. They were much smaller than their kinfa cousins, but they were feisty. Almost downright nasty if you asked Tau, but the meat was good and tender, and it was a family favorite lately. The family sing song cawing of the seraffin grew closer and Tau knew that he was almost there.
Peering through the thick foliage he could see the outline of two seriffs up in the treetops. He pushed through to the trunk of the nearby tree and shimmied himself up to get a better look. They were large, definitely full grown adults, and if he squinted his eyes he could see a nest. That was good. Maybe he could snag them both and the eggs. Waste not, want not, right? He pulled himself until he was firmly planted in the tree’s branch and looked for the best way to inch himself forward. They weren’t too far off, only about 15 feet. He could probably just rush them and stab ‘em up with his spear. Though now he wished he had Liira’s bow. That would have been much easier. He sighed thinking about it and with a huff he squared up and rushed at the seriffs.
They immediately puffed up, their anger already permeating the air. It was like they were unable to believe that someone would have messed with them. Lucky for Tau he had size on his side. They only came up with his knees, even with the show and when they charged back at Tau, protecting the nest, Tau jabbed up and to the side, trying to get a good shot. One cried out, it’s claws scratching Tau as it was hit and fell to the forest floor, the other Tau had to struggle with. It had to be the mom, it was protecting the nest something fierce. With one final swing he knocked it right out of the sky and down to the forest floor. Tau sighed and it was over.
With a heavy breath he picked up the three eggs in the nest, and shimmied himself down the tree, ready to grab the birds and figure out how he was supposed to cart it all back.
