Dmitry was feeling particularly homesick- he missed the warm sunlight that used to filter through his room, long naps under the trees in the park, all the other kids he used to play with… This place wasn’t the same. The day never quite got bright enough- and he had to sit in front of a solar stone for an hour every day just to make sure he wouldn’t get sick. He was already sick. Not that he really spoke up about it- when asked he said he was fine.
When he felt like this, he often wandered out to the garden to sit among the flowers. Sometimes they helped, and the buzzing sound of the crocobees and fluffbugs that lived there certainly did. On this day though, something was amiss. The flowers that had bloomed the night before were gone- and in their place were sloppily cut stalks and trampled grasses. Dmitry wasn’t sure if he was sad, or angry, but he certainly felt something. The small fey began to look around, trying to find whomever was so careless as to just… just… ruin all those pretty flowers that had only just bloomed.

Papaya wanted to get their mom something nice. She was a busy lady! With a lot of kids. So many kids. And sure, they were a bit of a hassle at school, but they were perfectly behaved at home. They weren’t entirely sure what to get her though- at least until they spotted some very pretty blue flowers while they were wandering the school grounds. Those would do nicely! They even still had some kid scissors on them from art class. Using them, they cut the flowers from their stalks, gathering them all into one big handful. A pretty bouquet! They just needed to find some paper to wrap them up in. Or maybe some extra decorative grasses- bouquets always had that sort of thing, right?
They weren’t really paying much attention to who was around them- far too wrapped up in their search for the perfect additions to the bundle of flowers in their hand. It was definitely a mistake. They spotted some pretty grasses, and began to head towards them, but after three steps they heard a high pitched squeal come from the ground. Immediately Papaya backed away, looking down to where they’d just stepped- oh, oh no. They stepped on a crocobee’s tail. Were they dangerous? Papaya couldn’t remember. Panicking, they looked around to see if any others were going to come.

Dmitry was going to give up and just go back to his dorm to wait out the rest of the day when they heard a high squeal in the distance. The sort of squeal that didn’t sound human. Concerned, he jogged up the garden path, going past some particularly tall grasses until the scene came into view.
Another kid- a fey- with a hand full of the flowers he’d just been lamenting, standing in front of an injured crocobee. And not just any crocobee, it was one of Dmitry’s pseudo-pets. He recognized it from the little yarn band he’d tied around one of its legs. “W-what did you do!?” He squeaked in alarm, forgetting his usually shy nature in favor of rushing forward to pick up the poor injured bee. In his haste, he almost shoved the other kid to the ground.

Papaya had been expecting more crocobees to come, not… another person. They stumbled to the side, taken off guard and not sure how to react at first. This… kid looked a lot like a bee, funnily enough. “It was an accident!” They blurted out, waving their free hand a little. “I didn’t see it on the ground, honest!” Wait- why did they care again? Aside from the risk of potentially getting bitten a dozen times over, it was just a crocobee, wasn’t it? Nothing big, nothing worth fretting over too much. Right?

Dmitry cradled the injured animal in his hands, inspecting the tail closely. Predictably, the crocobee bit into one of his hands. He winced, emitting a small pained sound, but didn’t try to pry it off. “You c-could’ve killed it…” Dmitry shook his head, on one hand he was happy that the crocobee was okay. But on the other hand… this person clearly had no regard for their surroundings! Stealing flowers, stepping on familiars… how terrible. “Wh-who told you that y-you could take those flowers?” Remembering them, he snapped his head up and leveled a hurt glare at the other fey.

“Well I didn’t, so it’s okay?” Papaya quirked a brow, tilting their head to one side. Honestly, this kid acted like they’d done it a mortal wound or something. Most it had was a broken tail- and those healed, didn’t they? His next question caught them off guard. Permission? For the flowers? They looked at them for a moment, then shrugged. “No one, you don’t need permission to pick flowers do you?” They snorted and laughed a little. “I was gonna use ‘em for somethin’! So they’re actually getting some use instead a just sitting there doin’ nothing.”

Dmitry couldn’t believe it. They didn’t seem to care at all about the poor familiar, or for tarnishing the garden landscape with their haphazard cutting and not to mention stealing the flowers. The crocobee seemed to realize that it wasn’t in mortal peril and released his hand, then clumsily took to the air to go back to its colony. Dmitry watched it for a moment, then looked back to the other kid. “You do need permission, they belong to the herbalism teacher and its n-n-not nice to steal. A-also, they do ple--plenty of things just growing- li-like providing food for bugs and stuff. I-it’s really terrible that you just… you just… took them and y-you don’t even appreciate them…!” He was overreacting, he knew on some level, but he’d already been feeling terrible and then this happened.

Woah. This kid was really overreacting. Papaya stared at the flowers, then back to the kid, then to the flowers again… “Well…. I don’t think he’d care. He kinda lets everyone do whatever they want anyway.” Papaya shrugged. Corben was a very laid back teacher, surely he would’ve given permission anyway. “Annnnd I was gonna make a bouquet for my mom with ‘em soooo that’s more useful than whatever you’re talkin’ about.” Papaya shrugged again, they weren’t going to feel bad about this and no amount of lecturing from some stranger was going to change that.

More useful in a bouquet than growing in the ground… Dmitry shook his head, he wanted to retort- wanted to make this person see reason. Obviously dying flowers weren’t as useful as living flowers- temporary joy from a present that was made from stolen goods wouldn’t be good in the end, but he couldn’t find the words. He just… shook his head more, eyes blurring as the culmination of his homesickness and the awfulness of this interaction sank in. “Y-you’re awful.” He inhaled sharply. Unable to bear having someone see him cry, he turned and darted off farther into the garden. This was probably the worst day he’d had in Below so far. Why oh why did he have to come to this school?

Papaya was at a loss. This was the most confusing reaction to anything they’d ever done- and this wasn’t even on purpose! Well, part of it anyway. They stared after the other fey, trying to figure out what exactly would have caused that little outburst of his but… nothing. Unless he really just… cared a whole bunch about flowers. He sighed, deciding to abandon the quest for nice grass to put in the bouquet, and turned to head back towards the Academy. They’d just… find some paper to wrap the flowers up in before their mother came to pick them up from school.
