Urgh...

Where was he now?

The lion could scarcely move and on this occasion he did remember what had happened. He'd be struck, and he'd been struck hard. Now he was somewhere else, moved by some unseen hand into yet another room of utter darkness. However on this occasion it smelled different, even as he lay on his sight and sucked in shallow breaths, he could tell that he was definitely not in the same spot. More interestingly, he had been patched him from head to toe.

His wounds had been cleaned, they had been dressed with some crude pulp, and then it appeared he had simply been left again. Evidently whatever had hit him hadn't killed him even if it should have, he could only assume that the smack to his head hadn't been hard enough...even if everything else had been. Even now he could tell something was wrong, something was amiss, and it wasn't a standard 'bruise'.

Gasping, the lion finally rose to his feet again and let out another uncomfortable whimper.

...His ribs.

"Hrngh..." he murmured, attempting to once again gain his bearings. Unsurprisingly his vision was just as blurry as before, what had happened to his eyes. Dark or no, they shouldn't have felt like this.

Regardless, on this occasion he definitely didn't need his eyes to know that he was in a place he really shouldn't have been. He knew this smell from when he was a cub, it was toxic.

His eyes widened, he needed to get out, and he needed to be fast.

"Make him bleed."

"He must learn..."

Credit where it was due, the boy had woken up.

It was with interest that the unseen lion made such an observation, even as he stood over the sulfurous pits that he had dragged the lion in to. Truthfully he hadn't expected the lion to wake up at all, let alone quickly. It had been on a whim that he had returned to where he had placed him, and it had been on that whim that he had witnessed that boy rise to his paws once more despite his injuries. Whatever he was, he was most certainly durable, and the unseen lion might very well give his kind credit for that.

However, there was only so much of these toxic fumes that any mortal could take. Tethys's minutes were in short supply and with injuries so far sustained, he was not going to be moving quickly at all... Not unless his instincts truly kicked in.

As the black lion held his breath, he watched as the faintest sliver of white began to make its move, slowly but surely feeling its way round. Ah, but could it be? Could the lion have realised that barreling around blindly would serve no purpose and benefit no one? Or perhaps this was simply a result of the injuries that he had already sustained and he simply couldn't move any faster than his aching limbs permitted.

Even for the unseen lion, it was advisable to leave this particular cave, and while he would return at regular intervals to check, he could only hold his breath for a limited period of time. Thus, he entered and left in silence, continuing to observe as this particular lion battled against injury and well...maybe one or two deliberately inflicted handicaps...

He could only move so fast as his limbs would permit him, but it was with a great deal of insistence that he made them move forward despite his pain. His ribs were in agony, every stride tearing into his chest, and yet if he didn't move he would die. Simply put, there was not room for debate in this, his kind were not able to breath the very air that came from the mouth of hell. His father had been very clear on that when they were children and had strayed too close to the sulfur pools.

Worse still, those pools could eat anything.

However, rather than run, scramble or dash in a random direction he had done something that he really should have been doing from the start. He closed his eyes, and as he took limited breaths, he let what little air he could feel flow over his fur. Slight as it was, he did eventually detect an air current... Barely there, it whispered across his ears and coaxed the fumes away from their source. He surmised in those moments that an exit, or at least access to a different 'type' of air would be in that direction.

With that in mind the Captain once again set off at a measured pace, his eyes remaining shut as followed the whispers towards whatever solace he could find. It was a gamble quite honestly, but it seemed like the most sensible option available and it might very well save his life. As a cub his father had always instructed him to move away from such things, to find clean air.

...Where there was a current, there would be a source.

Right...?

Well, well, well... This was a turn up for the books.

The lion hadn't rushed himself despite the 'deadline', he had actually done something properly. Of course, one did have to wonder if he would make it out before the air ran out and the sulfur took over. Even now the sulfur burned his own eyes and he made the decision to retreat to the safety of another passage. He would cut off the lion where he anticipated he would come from, the boy was following his very basic senses after all.

He was feeling his way slowly along the passage, his pace was decent enough but the black lion anticipated there would be difficulties in a few more minutes. Now it simply begged the question as to how he should proceed... for all intents and purposes the lion really should not have succeeded but something had come to his aid. A memory perhaps, but it had been enough to show that he did in fact have the capacity to think beyond the 'simple'.

...If he was following by touch then he would be capable of proper twitch motions, instinctual and immediate decisions that would give him the advantage rather than to destroy him and his allies.

But was it enough for the unseen lion to assist him, to let him live?

As he rounded another corner to hear the faint sound of coughing and a muffled thump, this was the decision he was now presented with. Regardless, he had a duty to return the corpse if the boy did expire and thus he set out to retrieve it... when the boy chose to 'die' was entirely up to him.

"Trial two," he murmured as he closed the distance. "Passed," he remarked with mild interest, though the white lion was unlikely to hear him as he was hauled away from the danger and towards a less toxic environment...
