Where was he?

His vision was blurry, almost as though someone had taken claws to his eyes; suffice to say that he could barely open them. Then again, even with his vision as it was, the usability of his eyes was largely irrelevant. Wherever he was, there was no light... There was no sound, no life, even the air he breathed seemed heavier and lacking. It was as though a heavy weight had clasped his lungs and squeezed hard, worst still, it wouldn't let go.

He stumbled to his paws and attempted to recall what had happened, but no matter what he did he simply couldn't remember. He remembered what happened when he had left the camp, he had gone an excursion with a number of his band and then... nothing. A large chunk of his memory had simply gone and the pounding in his head couldn't be blamed for this; at the very least he should have recalled whatever had put him here.

...Whatever had taken him here.

Gritting his teeth together he sucked in another breath and took a slow, measured look around. As it stood, there was nothing, it was as if he had entered the void itself. He could scarcely even see himself and if it were not for his own body heat he might very well have doubted he was even there.

He might have put this down to a bad dream but didn't they say that when you acknowledged you were in a dream, you could simply wake up? On this occasion, it didn't appear to be the case.

"Where the hell am I?" he hissed and swung around slowly. "Where am I!" He demanded. Someone had put him here, there was no way he was alone, he wasn't so foolish as to assume that.

"Make it seem like he's dead.

Ensure he suffers.

Every moment must be painful, make him see."

...And so he woke up.

From his vantage point the lion noted the sounds of stirring, the ragged breath and the initial onset of panic. The stench of fear soon reached his nostrils and he exhaled slowly, silently as he swept around to another spot. He didn't need to be able to see the captive lion, he had never needed to see anything, they were always do quick to telegraph their intentions and they never seemed to realise it until it was far too late.

This one was of not exception, the sound of wispy tendrils of mare sweeping through the 'void' touching his ears. The muffled paw sweeps as he swung round in a fruitless attempt to gain his bearings. Tethys truly was a peculiar individual to be placed in his care, one that he wasn't entirely sure was wise. Suffice it to say that the watcher failed to see how this particular lion would be able to succeed in the challenges that lay ahead.

Nevertheless, he would proceed with the intended trials.

Whether this one would be capable of surviving was another matter entirely, but as they had said, if he couldn't survive now, the rest of his 'quest' would be utterly pointless.

Thus, the only answer Tethys would receive was a faint click of loose rocks being released as the boulders were disturbed, and began to flood down into the pit in which he had been placed...

His eyes widened as what started as a click ended in a thunder.

The ground beneath him began to shudder and though it seemed to have no intention of giving way under him, the air seemed to be rushing at him. Whatever had been released upon him was coming for him and it was in his best interests to move, but one had to wonder as to where. Several streams of expletives shot through his head as he picked the most obvious solution and fled in the opposite direction that the 'air' was pressing in from.

The pressure building up behind him drew ever closer and he stumbled over his own footing. Without the ability to see the land in front of him, he couldn't gain any depth perception, he was completely blind. Actions that should have been easy now seemed so incredibly foreign, he was an infant again, stumbling blindly around in the dark. However on this occasion he had no mother or father to nudge him reassuringly until he found his balance.

...s**t.

Run! Run! Run!

His limbs shrieked as he pressed forward, desperate for the rumbling to cease and yet it didn't seem to do so... In fact, it was a wall he met first as the rocks drew closer to him.

With no other choice, he elected to climb, scrambling up the rock face in much the same fashion as he had done in the black lion's home...

Such a shame that it simply wasn't enough. He had barely made it a third of the way up, before the rocks slammed into his back and he found the world go 'dark' again.

"Trial one," The soft voice spoke as the rocks thundered across the pit and found their target. "Failed," it drawled with a touch of boredom.

The individual had expected nothing less from the pale lion, one of which he had heard so much about, and none of the information had been remarkable. In fact, the lion had concluded that in many respects they were wasting their time in even attempting to achieve what had been requested of them. All this white lion knew how to do, was to pursue his version of 'obvious', when there were more appropriate methods of dealing with such encounters.

On this occasion he had turned his back to his enemy, one could not always flee from battle, and in this case he had seen why. The lion had hit a dead end and been cornered, now he had seen what happened.

Death.

The black lion dropped down from his perch and padded with ease towards the now unconscious lion. He had taken another beating, one that would leave his limbs screaming for agony, but he was far from done. No, no, no, on this occasion this was only the beginning.

After all, he was no use to anyone if he was simply going to lead them all into a war they couldn't win, wasn't he?

His orders had been very specific, the child would suffer until he opened his eyes, or until he died.

There would be no compromise...Failure was not an option.
