Philomel lay in the taller, dried out grass on her back with all four paws in the air. She stared up at the sky, pink eyes filled with wonder. The clouds drifted slowly by to her never ending amusement. Her tail thrashed as she picked animals out of the shapes of the clouds.

A grasshopper landed on his nose quickly jumping off but not before startling the lioness. She quickly flipped onto her paws watching it leap away. In a kitten-like fashion Philome gave chase not watching where she was going.

A piece of the ocean detached itself from the rolling waves and strolled up onto the beach. That piece of ocean was called Kaito. The young male gave himself a vigorous shake. His mane was starting to grow in and, in his opinion, gave him an unfinished look. He groomed several stray tuffs of fur down. It was quieter here than back in the pride. Sometimes he just needed a bit of time to himself. Being the adopted son of the royal family wasn't easy with legitimate siblings growing up right beside him.

Kaito didn't envy them at all. He wondered where he'd come from. Any time he'd asked, someone would tell him how the King-to-be, Ram, had lept from the rocks to rescue him and his siblings from a floating log just before it had sunk. Of course others had come out, but the storyteller seemed to focus on his adopted father. Which had always been ok by the young growing cub. Now that he was older, he was wondering who his real parents had been. He wasn't sure he believed that the sea, as some claimed, had birthed the whole litter; despite all of them sharing a resemblance to it.

The young male plodded his way up the sand dunes to find a suitable grassy patch to lay down in. Getting coated in sand after a soothing swim wasn't his idea of fun. He watched the waves crashing in and found it soothing as always until he noted a dark shape behind him. Blue eyes watched the curious actions of a blue and black lioness. At first he couldn't figure out what she was doing. Then he realized there was grasshoppers in the grass. He smiled thinking what fun it would be. Kaito wasn't sure to invite himself or not.

A strange scent caught Philomel's attention and dragged it away from her hunting game with the grasshopper. It was sharp and salty like the weird water she found herself near, but stronger. The smell of wet animal hung with it. Her ears perked up listening for any noise. Tail tip twitching, she slowly turned around.

Leaping a good three feet in the air she gave an undignified yelp of surprise. As she scrambled a little away, she tripped over her own four paws. She quickly rolled into an awkward sitting position

"I'm sorry!" she mewed, "I did not know these lands belonged to anybody!"

The wind shifted. He could feel it along his damp pelt. It was one of the things he was attuned to, living so close to the ocean. Unfortunately it took his scent right to the lioness. He was sad as he watched her turn from her game to see him. Although he was quite surprised by the surprise she had. He didn't think he was that scary! Then her words registered.

"Oh! No! I mean please don't be afraid. No one owns these lands. At least not that I know of. I just came out here for some quiet. What are you doing out here alone?" He rather liked how the light blue wings stood out on her dark body. It was a nice contrast. No one would mistake her for anything but what she was.

"I don't mind some company if you want to stay." It was a tentative offer. She seemed so jumpy that Kaito wondered if something bad had happened to her.

Philomel tilted her head to one side processing the information. Her ear twitched against the wind as her pink eyes narrowed. She saw no reason to mistrust this bright salty scented male. Her tail twitched a bit as she thought about it. Finally, she stood and shook grass and dirt from her pelt.

"I was just....trying to amuse myself," she sheepishly admitted scraping a paw against the ground, "I have been alone for a bit and it gets boring." She slowly approached him with her head down and her ears alert. She sat right in front of the sea toned male.

"I would like someone to talk to as well."

He waited patiently. He'd learned that skill quickly. It didn't mean he liked it, just that he could do it. Kaito smiled. "I can understand that. Ironically I come out here to get away from the hustle and bustle. All that constant noise. Don't get me wrong, I love my pride. It's just a little.... much? Sometimes. I just want to hear the surf and wind." He closed his eyes and inhaled as a salt scented gust blew over them.

The young male was pleased to see that she'd settled from her startle and came to sit right before him. "It would be a pleasure to speak with you. My name is Kaito. What's yours?" He left it open. He didn't want to pry into her history if by chance she didn't want to talk about it. "You can tell me as much or as little as you'd like."

"Philomel. I chose my name myself! But I like yours too," she purred. She didn't remember her family nor a pride to call her own. She had been alone for a long, long time. Hunting was hard for a lone lioness, but she made do with small prey like rabbit and meerkat.

Glancing past the male, she stared at the sea. The waves played along the beach and the sun glittered off the water's surface like a precious stone. She liked the water, but was afraid to go in it.

"I can see why you like the salt water," she sighed wistfully, "It is like the night sky but during the day. I like to gaze at the stars, so the waves bring me peace as well, Kaito." She tasted the other lion's name enjoying how easy it was to say. Unlike her own.

"That's a lovely name!" Kaito smiled. "I must thank my parents for it, so I can't take any credit myself," he laughed. He'd led an easy life as an adopted son of the royal rulers, but hopefully not too spoiled. They'd made him pass all the same tests every cub and young adol had to go through. He cared about those around him.

The ocean male saw her glance toward the water. He craned his neck to look fondly at it too. He'd known it his whole life. So many times he'd been told he and his siblings were born from the ocean. Even if it wasn't his birth mother, it held a special place in his heart. "I've lived my whole life next to it. Listening to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach and the furry of it's storms. I honestly couldn't image a day without it." If he didn't hear it, he always felt that something was wrong.

"They have moods, just as we do. I've been it happy, angry, and sad." He smiled at his whim. Logically perhaps he knew that the wide ocean couldn't really have feelings, but he liked to think that he could feel it's emotions anyhow. "You should stay awhile."
