Losille huffed as she dragged the branches to the cave. Izotz had at least fashioned a sled of sorts - an old bit of hide left in the cave from visitors past so she could pile as many branches in as she could and could fill the cave in one or two trips. Izotz had predicted it would be a long and harsh winter and Losille was not looking forward to it. He had ventured down the mountain to trade for some furs for her - using her herbal remedies as currency he'd managed to make some fine purchases as well as some dried meats and fruit in case hunting was scarce which it very well could be.

Stepping into the cave, Losille pulled the wood to the very back, letting it sit next to the other pile. Izotz would remove it when he returned. She hadn't thought it would take her this long to get used to the cold. She had been in the mountain for some time now - long enough for the pair to bare a child and for that child to go off on her own now. Still, each time the winter came and it shocked her. She was born in warmth and sunlight - lush green gardens and flowers - not among billowing winds and frost. She had managed to find a few berries that grew year round and had ran a trial and error for plants she could grow before the winter came. They had a nice stock of carrots, celery and berries - burried deep under the snow wrapped in cloth to keep them longer.

Izotz himself had been hunting - drying the meat out. Losille would not take part but did not judge him. He had to eat to live. This time, however, he returned empty handed from his hunt as he had expected. Winter hit the mountains firsts and any creatures left wandering were hunters themselves or likely near death and he didn't want to risk illness. The wind whipped around him and he breathed it in, relishing the coolness. He was still not used to having to prepare for winter so much. His blood ran cool - his breath always frosted. But now he had a love to care for and so he pushed himself every Autumn to get a head start. They were never caught off guard or unprepared but still he worked well into the start of Winter. Even now, Losille was collecting branches to add to an already large pile.

He watched her as she dragged the pile into the cave, obviously struggling. She was not used to such hard labour - she was delicate like the flowers she tended to. But she had insisted in helping and not once had she complained or resented him for the life he had given her when she chose him. The scar on his leg ached - a reminder of their chance meeting. She had saved his life and he had given his heart in return. Entering the cave, he swept her up in an embrace, gently nuzzling her cheek with his own.

"Relax, my love," he whispered. "We will be fine."

Losille returned his embrace, breathing out a sigh of relief that he had returned unharmed. He was experienced but still she worried. "If is you who should relax," she said, clicking her tongue. "You know there is nothing to hunt but still you go out every day. We have plenty of food stored." A breeze rolled through and she shivered, taking refuge curled in her furs. "Come and rest." She shuffled over so there was room for him to sit.

Izotz chuckled softly at her chastising him. She was right, of course, but it would not stop him from heading out again in the morning. For now, the sun was beginning to set and the mountain was too dangerous at night. He took a seat and pulled her close to him, breathing in her scent. She always smelled of flowers, even now when she was so far from them. She was shivering, he realised and he wrapped the furs around her.

"Do you miss it?" He whispered quietly into her hair - a moment of self doubt. "Your garden and your flowers."

Losille had leaned against him but at his question she pulled away and looked at him, a soft frown on her features. She let out a deep sigh. "I will admit there are days when I do," he opened his mouth to speak but she silenced him. "But I would miss you more than all my flowers if I left you." She sighed again.
"After all this time you shouldn't need to question me, Izotz. I am not a prisoner if I wanted to leave I would have. I stay because I love you." She shivered and leaned in close to him. "I endure the winter and the snow because I love you and eventually spring will come again and it's like meeting my flowers for the first time. You appreciate something more when it is fleeting." She nuzzled him. "No more talk of this. Keep me warm."

Izotz, of course, knew what her answer would be for they had had this same conversation many a time before. He also knew her well enough to not argue or reply. He had faced many fierce enemies in his time and very few matched her in ferocity when she was angry. He pulled her close and gave a coy grin. "Aye, I'll keep you warm."
