It had started with a very small, very pointed side comment from Stibnite on how Lopezite seemed to have a fairly decent head on his shoulders. Leucite had agreed, and that had been enough for him to read between the lines and translate what his captain had actually meant to say, but could not due to propriety. It was the closest thing to a "Yes, Dear," moment the two would really ever get, and that had amused Leucite greatly. Which was why, with no pomp or grandure, he had sent Lopezite a summons on his communicator crystal, to meet Leucite in his office to discuss something of importance. After all, it would be best to yet the young man stew for a bit, as to what exactly the general would want to talk to him about.

A vague summoning was not exactly how Lopezite wanted to spend his evening. Naturally, he had agreed, but he'd had a bit of time between the scheduled meeting.
So, of course he'd stewed.
He made sure he had a ride down there--had scheduled that early, since he was so used to the incompetence of his contacts. Not that he was going to go rat anyone out, but it was a bit discouraging to need to rely on someone else for transportation when they were perpetually late or had to reach.
Arriving in Negaspace, he did a lot more pacing.
Had he done something wrong? Was he meeting quota? ...Was this about him being late? Because, that wasn't going to happen again. Especially once he got to be a Captain.
...If he got to be a Captain.
Couldn't really do that if he was messing up.
Lopezite walked with his chin cupped in his hands and his eyes on the ground as he tried to reflect on everything he'd been doing--or not doing. He didn't work himself up, but he was running his mind ragged thinking about it. Finally, when it was close to time to meet, he made his way to Leucite's office and knocked.
"Sir," he called, "Lopezite, reporting."

Leucite had been doing some general tidying up in his office - sorting the various files he had on the recruits of the training corps mainly - when the knock sounded and Lopezite's voice came through the door loud and clear. Good. He was a little early but that was good. Leucite put the other files away, leaving only Lopezite's file on his desk. Placing it in front of him, he waited a few seconds, counting down from five. "Enter," He said loudly as he reached the end of his countdown, and kept his hands crossed over the file, watching the door and waiting for the Lieutenant to enter the room.

Lopezite drew in one final breath to calm himself but didn't waste time behind the door. He entered, carefully closing the door behind him before he walked across the office. He stood tall, not so much that he exhibited hubris, but he didn't want to give the impression that he was afraid or weak.
He was curious; he made no effort to hide that, but he was professional.
"General," he greeted, pleasant but reserved.
He didn't ask any questions. He didn't need to. He'd made it here, now he just had to wait or Leucite to guide the conversation.

"Lieutenant," Leucite replied, nodding his head slightly before motioning to one of the chairs in front of him. "Please, have a seat." The truth of it was Leucite didn't care if the young man sat or not - but he'd offer all the same. After Lopezite sat, or didn't as the case may be, he picked up the file, turning it so that the Lieutenant could see his name in the printing along the top. "I make it a.. personal mission of mine, to look over all the files we have on recruits," Leucite continued, placing the file back down. "Having had the ability to work with you directly, aside from one incident of tardiness that I have not seen repeated, you are an upstanding and effective officer. You follow orders, which is very important." "To that end, I would like to make you an offer." He steeped his hands at this point. "I see a lot of potential in you, Lopezite, and I would very much like to foster that potential. To that end, I would like to personally mentor you - not only here in the Training Corps, but outside of it as well." "In other words, I want you on my team." He said, with a somewhat wry grin. "What do you say?"

Though Lopezite debated for a second, ultimately he sat down. Standing up would have done nothing but make him appear awkward and rigid, so he sank into a seat.
When Leucite began talking Lopezite wore a calm expression, listening intently. It was a good offer, and Leucite had given him more guidance than any Captain or General he'd worked with before.
The mention of his tardiness was enough to make him clear his throat and he shifted positions in his seat.
"I appreciate the offer, Sir, and the praise, but before I can accept..."
He tapped his finger on the chair's armrest. "This isn't going to reflect badly on the Captain I was assigned? I mean, off the record," he shifted positions and leaned forward a bit, "I'm not his biggest fan. I'd be grateful to have someone I can rely on, and you certainly fit the bill. I don't know what protocol is for any of this, but--I'd be grateful for someone that could help me figure out what I need to be doing."

Ah, so there was the crux of it. Leucite nodded his head slowly. He generally was not in the mindset of poaching people but, in this particular case he was more than willing to make and exception. Lopezite had potential. Potential Leucite very much wanted to foster. He was silent for only a moment longer before he cleared his throat. "I don't see why it would have to," Leucite said with an almost dismissive wave of his hand. "As far as I can see it, I am purely requesting that you work with me directly to further your training, a mentorship, really... For all intents and purposes if you'd like to continue to report to that Captain you may. Or I could request you be put directly under mine or Captain Stibnite's command for the time being..." Actually, seeing as Stibnite was as Captain now, perhaps it would be good for her to cut her teeth. She had expressed her approval of Lopezite. Yes, this would work wonderfully. "If you accept, then I will put in your transfer to Captain Stibnite's command, effective immediately," Lecuite said with a small nod. "Seeing as she is my adjutant, that puts you in direct contact with me every day. This will allow me to mentor you, as well as Captain Stibnite to ensure effective cohesion. How does that sound?"

Lopezite didn't feel the need to sugar coat it; he nodded quickly and sat up straight. "Excellent, actually. I would be eternally grateful to be in a position where I have someone I can rely on. Captain Stibnite and yourself have both been an extremely positive influence and I am comfortable saying that I feel like I've learned more from the lessons in your Training Corps than I've ever learned from anyone else."
He seemed like he was in a better mood now--glad to be with someone he felt like he could trust and actually work with.
"I gladly accept that offer, General. Thank you for considering me."

Leucite nodded. "Then it's settled. I'll see to it that your transfer is put in." He smiled at Lopezite, a warm, genuine thing. "Welcome to the team." He was actually quite thrilled to see Lopezite warm up. "Once the transfer is finalized we'll see to getting you the contact information for both me and Captain Stibnite. Trust me, you can rely on us to ensure that you won't be late to another class." And if he was, it would be for good reason, as he would probably be helping with the set up or been told to show up a bit later than usual. Leucite didn't play favorites but... Sometimes it helped to have someone in the group that he could direct to some degree. "Do you have any questions or anything you'd like to talk about? Now that this business is settled?"

Lopezite quickly found a smile growing onto his face. He had been excited about the Negaverse before, but now it felt like he had some sort of solid grounding. Admittedly, he was still nervous about making a fool of himself in front of Leucite--and now that they'd had this discussion, it felt like he had more at stake.
"Honestly," he said after a moment of earnest thought, "I can't think of anything right now. Before this meeting, I probably had many, but now I can't think of a single one. But, I trust, I'll think of a few more as soon as I step outside this door. I will come to you when they come to me."
He offered another smile and extended his hand; he wished to express gratitude, even if only through a handshake.
"Thank you for this opportunity, General. I won't let you down."

Leucite rose and took the other man's hand in a firm handshake, giving him a warm smile and nod as well. "I know you won't," He said with a chuckle before releasing the other man's hand. "If you have no further questions as you say, you are free to go about the rest of your day. I'll handle the paperwork. Captain Stibnite will likely reach out to you with your first assignment in the next day or two." With that said, he sat back down and began to work through the transfer paperwork. "Have a good day, Lieutenant, you are dismissed."
