He returned to Jauhar just as the rainy season rolled in. Heavy clouds had hovered over him as he approached the edges of the jungle from Oba, although for days not a drop had fallen from the sky. It just smelled like rain, that was all -- an electric smell, laden with anticipation.

Now that he was in the jungle proper, he knew that the sky had opened up. It was something he heard more than felt. Down under the foliage, it was always wet in Jauhar, and fat drops of water were just about the norm. But if you knew what to listen for, the patter-plop of rain high overhead was plainly obvious. With little effort he could imagine exactly what the top of the canopy looked like, with the rain coming down onto big waxy leaves. He had a hankering to climb up there for a good look (he’d been away from Jauhar a few months now, after all, and a jungle boy like him really did get to missing the place) -- but he had an even stronger hankering to get back to camp.

He wasn’t sure why, even. Just a few weeks back he’d been happy to lie on the beach in Matori, and now he was sort of regretting that whole ‘vacation’. He had folks who depended on him. He was too old for this run-off-and-live-free stuff.

He’d had a good roll with that. Now he had to buckle down, take care of business, all that.

He swung back onto Shenandoah’s back and nudged the radaku forward. They moved through the maze-like jungle with long, easy strides.

After spending a couple of years in Matori, Solari felt ready to move out and finally see the world outside of her home and Oba. She’d made it all the way to Juahar so far and didn’t know if she liked it or hated the place. It was dark, a little too dark and closed off for her taste considering she’d spent so much time in the openness of Matori. It also felt a little odd to be away from a body of water for so long, she’d gotten used to daily swims in the ocean and well she kind of missed it now.

The earth also felt like it was going to suck her up sometimes it was so soft. But the trees were nice? So that was kinda fun. Still, her itchy fingers just couldn’t get her hands on anything. The Shifters all lived up above in the trees and it wasn’t like she could just show up or have some sort of escape route in case something happened. The only way down was a very long way down. Solari looked up at the thought, sighing as she made a face. She was going to have to move on soon.

Solari squinted as her eyes spotted a Shifter at the end of the path making his way towards her on a Radaku. She barely met any of them on the roads. It made her think about getting a mount; all this walking was really exhausting. She wasn’t really a beast tamer though, so she didn’t really know how it went. Hell, she didn’t even know how Riolos had found his way to her. The little guy perked up when she thought about him and sat up on her shoulder. He was good company though, so maybe so would a mount. Maybe she’d get a snaptrotter, maybe something else. She didn’t really know.

Maybe this guy knew some familiar trainer around these parts or something. So when he got close. Solari waved at him.

“Ecuse me, are you from around here?” It was worth a shot right?

The paths in this part of Jauhar were nothing like the trade-roads in Oba, or even the trails in Matori. Not many people travelled by land here, and those that did did not necessarily follow any specific route. When he was a kid, Ouen could have easily gone weeks without ever setting foot on the ground. Radaku, of course, did not climb trees like the shifters did, and ever since the beast got too big enough to carry on his back (and not the other way around), Ouen had been getting used to life down on the earth.

It was rough going -- just a tiny winding strip of down-trodden tree-roots and dirt. Shenandoah made easy going of it, but he was decidedly startled to see another earthling on the ground. A Matorian, at that!

He was already slowing Shen to a walk when she looked up to wave, and dismounted when he was beside her (not being much a fan of talking down to people from the backs of beasts, which had always struck him as a particularly snobby thing to do).

"I sures am, an' you sures ain't." He nodded in greeting. "I'm just on my way home from 'lil jaunt away. Happened t'a be over in Matori, if that's where you's from. You tryin' to get yourself to Neued or somethin'? You's a little off course. There's a better road over that-a way... but I dunno if you'd have much luck gettin' to it from 'ere, jungle's real thick between here an' there, takes a real climbin' sort to handle it."

Well of course she wasn’t, Solari mentally narrowed her eyes at him. He had an interesting accent, one she had not heard anywhere. She also knew most Shifters didn’t have such an accent; she’d met some others after all. She wasn’t exactly too sure about everything he was saying, but she knew he was talking about work, and lots more work than she was willing to do out here at this time. Solari hugged herself to try and warm herself up. Did she ask him for some help? It sure would make her life a lot easier if he could bring her somewhere or something.

“Would you mind taking me somewhere?” It was worth a try, maybe he’d help her out. Shifters were kind right? Not that he looked particularly kind, Solari had noticed his weapon alright.
