A text was sent to Cordelia early one afternoon - which, really, was somewhat of a surprise in and of itself because Fritz St. James was not exactly known for his texting prowess. That, combined with his luddite ways and his confusion over all states of technology that surpassed the nineteen sixties, meant that he had actually taken some time and effort to make sure it was sent properly.

Text to Cordy:

Do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 17, 2016 9:22 am

Text to Fritz Used to be a big thing for my family. Brought everyone together. Good food. Nan's recipes. You?

She hadn't put too much thought into the holidays, other than knowing they wouldn't be the same since she couldn't exactly head home for them under the current circumstances in Destiny City. She still didn't want to put them at risk, no matter how much they might have wanted her at home.

That did open up the possibilities of putting together her own Thanksgiving, though. In the time she'd been away from home she'd put together her own rag-tag band of misfit 'family' members. It wasn't like they couldn't toss together something to make the holidays their own, right?

Sitting in his apartment, Crook draped lazily across his lap, Fritz squinted at the screen of his old fashioned flip phone with his glasses pushed all the way up his nose in an attempt to see it better. Cordy's reply made the corners of his lips quirk up into a small smile, and he absently smoothed fingers through his cat's fur while he debated how to respond.

He'd celebrated Thanksgiving last year, but it had been just himself and then-Tolliver, and it had seemed a little ridiculous for two people who had been born and raised in the UK to celebrate a holiday that Fritz didn't really see the point of in the first place. But now it felt a little different; not because he suddenly saw the point of the holiday, but mostly because he liked the idea of a sort of...gathering with good food and good people.

Crook meowed loudly, demanding food, as Fritz typed out a reply.

Text to Cordy:

I did sort of last year but not much. But if someone else wants to celebrate I think it would be fun.

Then he added a smiley face, just for good measure.

Cordelia couldn't help but laugh at the smiley face added in to the text, shaking her head slowly at the mental image of Fritz actively typing out an emoticon. It went along with the idea of his own awkward but friendly smiles and it was reassuring that he was reaching out to her like this. He'd come a long way since they'd first met and she was proud of him.

Text to Fritz: It's important to remember what we're thankful for, now more than ever. I think we have a few friends that would agree too. Suggesting we throw together dinner?

Text to Fritz: If so, I'm in. I'm not too shabby in the kitchen if you're willing to trust my cooking and assist?

The idea of putting together a menu and a grocery list to go along with it was an exciting one. It would mean figuring out who all would be available to join them so they knew just how large of a meal to prepare. It would make a good distraction from everything, work included.

Fritz slouched further onto his couch, stretching his legs out to rest on the ottoman that was in front of him, Crook meowing in protest as he moved. The cat crawled up his stomach and promptly planted himself on Fritz's chest, purring loud enough that it vibrated up his entire body.

Text to Cordy:

Maybe. Dinner would be fun, right? I like cooking.

Dealing with technology would likely result in explosions all around, but cooking was, at least, something that Fritz had learned to do while living on his own and with Rhys. He may not have been great at it, but he could at least manage, and that was good enough.

I'm in.

Another smiley was added.

Text to Fritz: Up to meeting for tea somewhere to discuss in person? I've got the night off from work, so my evening is free.

While she waited for a response she hauled herself up off of the couch, heading into her room to tidy herself up a bit in the event Fritz shot back a text saying that he'd like to meet somewhere. Fortunately, 'tidying up' meant little more than readjusting the messy bun that she'd pulled her hair up into and debating whether or not to put on different sweater.

He was slightly surprised at the offer to meet up, but pleased by it, Fritz smiling at the small screen of his phone. It took him a few minutes to manage to type something back, his bad hand shaking slightly as he painstakingly spelled each word out, but eventually he got there.

Text to Cordy:

Cafe on third street? I'll be there in twenty. : )

And, on the dot, twenty minutes later, Fritz could be found sitting at one of the small, wooden tables in the outside section of the cafe, dressed in a pair of khaki pants and a green holiday sweater that had white embroidered moose all over it and probably would have made Rhys horrified and Hitch delighted.

Text to Fritz See you there! smile

She found a loose, comfortable sweater to pull on, checking herself in the mirror before snagging her purse on the way out. The cafe that Fritz had picked wasn't too far from her apartment so she opted to take the trip on foot, enjoying the cool, fall air.

A smile lit her lips as she caught sight of him outside the cafe. She drew her phone out of her bag, sending another text his way in lieu of sneaking up on him.

Text to Fritz You seem comfortable. Nice sweater.

His phone buzzed in his pocket, Fritz momentarily forgetting that it even existed and jumping slightly, Tugging it out, he flipped it open and eyed the screen, then let out a small laugh, twisting around in his seat to see where Cordelia was.

"Come out wherever you are, little bird..."

She heard him from across the street and found herself smiling, pausing briefly to make a bird whistling noise in response to his call before crossing the street herself. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting for too long. Going to sit out here and chat or would you like to get a table inside? It's pumpkin spice season, you know..." Not that she was the biggest fan of it herself. She enjoyed pumpkin things, but the spice everywhere was, in general, rather unpleasant.

"I really do like your sweater, Fritz. And it's good to see you."

Fritz let out a snort of amusement at the bird whistle, but he couldn't help the smile that blossomed across his face. It was just the sort of relaxed, playful atmosphere that made everything easier to bear, and Cordelia had always been a bright spot in his life - even if he hadn't exactly been the best of friends at first.

He stood up automatically as she came closer, reaching out to take her hands in his. Fritz leaned in and pecked one check, and then the other, giving her fingers as a squeeze as he said, "Outside is fine, it's a lovely day outside. And it's delightful to see you as well, darling, please do get something and join me, my treat."

Rummaging around, Fritz extracted a few dollar bills and held them out.

"Then we can have ourselves a pleasant time talking."

The first time Fritz had kissed her cheeks she had been incredibly awkward, fussing at him as she had blushed and shooed him away. She was fairly certain that he had done it the next time they'd met just to get another reaction from her-- Then it had sunk in that this was Fritz being comfortable and doing something that he was used to doing when greeting friends.

This time she simply smiled, turning her cheeks as he did while returning the squeeze of hands. "Now, now, Fritz. You should know by now that if you're going to treat me to something you have to pick it up before I get here so I can't find a way to tell you 'no' or just pay for it on my own and sneak the money back to you." Cordelia nudged the money back into his hand, soft smirk on her lips as she stepped back before he could insist.

"Did you already get something for yourself?" Her brow lofted as she watched him. "Or did you want me to grab something for you too?"

It was, admittedly, still taking Fritz a little bit of time to get used to being physical with people again at all. For someone who'd spent most of his life casually embracing people, kissing cheeks and hands in greeting, and slinging arms around shoulders, the last year had done a great deal in terms of stunting Fritz's tolerance for casual contact. That, combined with the fact that he'd mostly done all of that stuff because of shallow reasons, meant that even getting back into the routine of shaking hands again was hard.

But there were a few people that it felt easier with, and Cordy was one of them, because she had been with him all this time - and her initial reaction had, yes, entertained him, even if he'd been surprised by it. It was a natural greeting; he was proud of the fact that he was getting better enough to do it again.

He made a face at her. "That's not how it works," Fritz protested, but he was fighting a smile as he folded the money back into his pocket. "I've already got something, but thanks, darling. Although I wouldn't say no to another muffin," he mused, glancing at his empty plate.

"Anyway, come back and sit with me so we can catch up."

"Another muffin might make you a bit soft around the middle, Fritz. If I get you another one I might have to talk you into going for a run around the park with me later," she teased, flashing him a grin before slipping inside to snag something to snack on along with a drink for herself.

Fortunately, there wasn't much of a line inside and the barista at the counter quickly steamed an eggnog for her, sprinkling a dash of cinnamon on top before putting a lid on her cup. She was passed a bag containing a muffin for Fritz along with a slice of cake with vanilla bean icing. On her way back out to join her friend she snagged a fork and a handful of napkins, just in case.

"I do hope you didn't wither away while waiting for me to return, Fritz... I know it might have seemed like forever, but I brought treats."

Cordy was given a mock-outraged look.

"Running is for chumps," Fritz called after her, but settled back down in his seat with a slightly amused smile on his face, lifting his cup of tea to his lips and taking a small sip. It was relaxing, to be around her; to be around any of the ones he was slowly coming to regard as his...well, he wasn't entirely sure what the right word was. Family felt almost too much; like he didn't deserve that. But friends... Fritz wasn't sure whether it was too much or too little to hope for.

He squashed the depressing thoughts out of his mind and smiled up at Cordy as she came back, green eyes flicking over the bag in her hand.

"Treats are an acceptable form of reciprocation," said Fritz solemnly, reaching out to pluck the bag from her fingertips before she could stop him. "Now. Tell me. How is everything for you lately?"
