The teacher had paired each kid up with a partner for a project; build a replica of the academy grounds out of clay. Just a fun little project they designed to get students to talk to others outside of their normal groups of friends. There was a chorus of groans when the students found out that they couldn't work with their friends and that the teacher was going to pick.
No one groaned louder than Kie. Dude, he had a twin for a reason; automatic partner. The teacher was going to pair them with someone lame, they could just feel it in their horns. Kie looked around to see who was going to be the lucky student. The teacher called on the Geist-Grimm hybrid everyone said was the kid of some famous band member. Kieran frowned, wondering if she was going to be uptight and pushy because Mommy or Daddy was famous. She better not be, or she'd be in for the prank of her life.

Anastara looked at her partner and barely resisted rolling her eyes. Seriously? She got paired with the class troublemaker? In what universe did she deserve that? Ana bet she'd be doing all the work and Kieran would sit back, do nothing, and take all the credit. Sighing, Ana moved to the seat in front of him and turned the desk, making a bigger work area.
"Hi, I'm Anastara, but you can call me Ana." She said, offering a smile and trying to be friendly. Maybe she could smile them into submission long enough to get help finishing the project. The demon eyed her for a long time, making her feel somewhat uncomfortable before the stare was broken by the arrival of their project board and clay. "Do you want to draw the grounds? Or should I do it?"

"You really some famous person's kid? Or do you just spread that around for attention?" Kie asked, ignoring the introduction. They knew her name, and she knew Kie's name. They were in the same class, for the Nine's sake, and didn't need introductions. Kie looked at the project board and pulled it towards them, beginning to draw out the academy's outline. "If you're famous, can you hook me up with free stuff?"
A thump on the table made the demon look up from his drawing to see Ana had punched the clay. She looked a little mad as she scooped it up, rolled it out and kneaded it a little more gently. "What? Cat got your tongue? I say something that made you upset, princess?" Kie laughed, it looked like the rich kid with a family didn't like Kie's attitude.

Ana looked at Kieran coldly. "I am not a princess." She said in a voice that could have frozen the other kid to the bone. "Nor am I famous, so I can't 'hook you up' with free stuff." Anastara smooshed the clay some more before pulling pieces off and making buildings out of them. "My mother is famous, she's the pianist in a popular band and no. I don't spread it around, other people do."
Ugh. Who did this kid think they were? What business of theirs was her life? And on top of that, how dare they judge her just cause her mom was famous? That didn't make Ana special. Ana was going to make her own name, and be a big star in her own right, not rely on her mother's coattails. Was Kie jealous? Of what? Being stopped everywhere you go? Of being interrupted during an outing with her mom and brother just so her mom could sign autographs? Oh yeah, super awesome. "Are you done drawing yet?"

"You poor thing, getting it spread around how famous your mommy is. That must be absolutely terrible for you." Kie pointed out, completely unimpressed with her tone. "If you can't hook up your friends with free stuff, what's the point of being a famous pianist's daughter?" Kie needled some more, watching the girl hold onto her temper with an iron fist. They also watched her accidentally squish one of her buildings. That was too bad, her buildings were pretty good for some spoiled kid.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm done. Give me the clay so I can put the base on... Hey!" Kie shouted as she smooshed the largest piece of clay on his outline of the academy. He worked hard on that; she just covered the whole thing. What was the point of making the drawing if she wasn't going to follow the lines and just do whatever?

"Relax, princess." Ana said, rolling her eyes and repeating Kie's insult back at them. "Here, make trees and a fountain." She tossed him the remainder of the smaller ball of clay and started cutting into the bigger one with a claw. Soon, Kie's outline came into view and the base clay looked exactly how he had drawn it on the project board. "See? I happen to know what I'm doing. Well? Make a fountain and some trees while I put the buildings on. Unless you can't." That kicked Kie into gear and they started molding with a sour expression.
"I don't buy my way into friendships." Ana said as she started placing buildings. "There's no point in being friends with someone who isn't friends with you. They're only around for free concert tickets and autographs and the second you need that person, they're gone. Doing something else with one of their real friends."

Kie lost his sour look for a second and peered at his partner. That last bit sounded like she knew first hand that people pretend to be your friend. Kie knew that feeling too; they knew that some of his so called 'friends' only tolerated his presence because of his sister, Phe. Kie didn't let on they knew, but it was pretty obvious. "There's a point to being friends with people who wont be there for you. Sometimes they're there for people who are important to you instead." Kie kept their head down as they said that, placing the fountain and some trees.
"Look, Princess, no one is perfect. Everyone screws up, everyone has favorites, everyone sucks eventually." Kie pointed out. "But if you have these people, you can use them later on. Maybe they wont support you though a cry-fest, but you can trade tickets for bags of candy or homework notes. Don't buy friends, buy allies."

Ana looked up, but Kie refused to look at her, pretending to be caught up in putting lopsided trees around the fountain. Allies? Maybe she could bribe people to leave Thayne alone? The candy idea wasn't a bad one either. But it just felt wrong doing that; besides, Mama could buy as much candy as Ana wanted (she wouldn't but she could). "Nah, anyone who can be bought like that, I don't want as allies either. I can, and do, make my own friends without needing to buy their loyalties."
"What about you? Is that all you have? Allies and not friends? Isn't that lonely?" It sounded lonely. Maybe that's why Kieran was always disrupting class. Although, she had to admit the whoopee cushion on the teacher's chair had even made her laugh. And she'd nearly fallen out of her chair at that. It was right after the teacher had started a serious lecture. Both the twins had gotten kicked out of class that day because they both claimed to have done it.

"I have friends." Phe and Baum were his friends. "And I have people I know will stand with me. They hang out with my sister more, she's better at having relationships I guess." Kie shrugged. "I only need the friends I have, though. Too many people...it gets hard to juggle everyone." Kie placed the last tree and looked at what they'd made. It...did not look cohesive. The buildings looked nice, and the base was great, but the fountain and the trees? Obviously someone other than the building creator made them. Maybe that was a good thing, though? It showed that the were both working on the project.
"We didn't do too bad, Princess." Kie said, the nickname was going to stick as far as they were concerned. Maybe she wasn't as spoiled as he'd originally thought she was, but the name irritated her and Kieran wasn't going to lose that. They had a reputation to upkeep. "I guess we should go turn in it."

Ana growled at the nickname that Kie seemed bound and determined to use. Although she should just ignore it, it wasn't like they were going to be hanging out after this. One project and begrudging conversation didn't make you friends. She did find that they were a little more similar than she'd previously thought, though. His ideas on friend paralleled hers, though they were more willing to use 'allies' than she was.
"Yeah, lets turn it in. It looks like were the first ones done too." Ana stood and, before Kieran could pick up the project, she poked them right in the nose with a sharp claw. "I'm not a princess, Kieran. But if you keep calling me that, I'm going to say I did the whole thing myself." She scooped the project up and flounced away towards the front of the class. Ana smiled when she heard an irritated growl behind her followed by hurried footsteps. At least she could irritate Kie as much as they irritated her.
