While his family was never cruel to him, they did love to tease, and he learned quickly that he couldn't defend himself physically. More to the point, he rarely if ever wished to. He preferred using his words to defend himself from attacks. Likewise, he found great joy in the joy and laughter of others, and so learned to be quick with a joke. They're not always the best jokes per se, but he claims that everyone loves a good pun, they just don't want to admit it.
EMPATHETIC xxx»» Nirav has a big heart. He's the sort of man who has to put a book down for a while after reading a particularly emotional passage. The few times he's been convinced to go to the cinema, an experience he generally can't stand, he nonetheless finds himself cringing at the secondhand embarrassment he feels, crying over every heartbreak, and overcome with joy at the protagonist's triumph. He can't stand a sad ending, and in fact has a small journal in which he writes new, happier endings for the stories he has read over the years that didn't turn out well. He carries others emotional weight as if it were his own, and is generally happy to do so, if it means making another person's burden even a little lighter. He claims that the important thing is just knowing someone cares, and so he will always be that person.
CHARITABLE xxx»» Hand in hand with his heart is Nirav's conscience. He can't bear to see others suffering, and so he will do anything in his power to make things even a little better. He never throws things away if they are useful, instead donating them to charities. When he has money, he gives it freely. He has on more than one occasion invited a stranger who seemed to be having a rough time into his home for a hot meal. If he can help, he will, and if he cannot, he will stubbornly insist on trying to find a way to do so anyway. He would gladly give the shirt off his back if he could.
OPTIMISTIC xxx»» There's always a silver lining, or so Nirav will insist. Even in the darkest times, he tries to find the light. If he starts to feel down, he'll go outside on a cloudless night to watch the stars. Living in England, cloudless nights can be few and far between, so sometimes he just reminds himself they're there, and that's enough for him. It's very difficult to get him down. Whenever something manages, he's quick to bounce back. It's a talent he never takes for granted, because he knows for some people it's not so easy. And so, he tries to spread his good cheer around whenever he can.
ECCENTRIC xxx»» Nirav can come across as a bit odd. His obsession with the stars can overtake him if he gives it the chance. The mention of them in a conversation can immediately turn it into a ramble. His home is a mess of star charts and scribbled notes, chapters of books, fiction and non-fiction, that he's begun and forgotten and found and re-started a thousand times over. He can't keep his thoughts straight half the time, and will sometimes begin one sentence, lose his thought halfway through, and wander towards something completely unrelated before he can even think to try and remember. He often forgets that other people aren't in his head and therefore can't follow his thought processes if he doesn't explain them fully, leaving people confused when he makes what, to him, is an easy jump from one conclusion or statement to the next, when in reality the two seem completely unrelated.

CHILDHOOD xxx»» Nirav was the youngest son of a rather large Indian family. Overall, his family was an odd mix of traditional values, and modern conveniences. His father, a muggle man who'd caught the eye of his witch mother while she was out shopping, was more than happy to introduce his beloved to the beauty of the modern world. Personally, Nirav never saw the draw; he much preferred candles to light bulbs, as the artificial light hurt his eyes. He didn't care for the telly, or video games, and absolutely hated talking on the phone. Whenever his family would gather around to watch a film or compete with one another, he would sit to the side, generally with a book, and enjoy watching them enjoy themselves far more than he ever enjoyed attempting to get involved. He loved their joy, but whenever forced to take part, he found it overwhelming.
SCHOOL YEARS xxx»» When his time came to attend Hogwarts, he was ecstatic to be in a place that was powered by nothing more than magic. He developed a few specific areas of interest while in school, but truthfully, nothing could ever hold his focus like the stars. He was enamored with the night sky, with the constellations and the stories they told. He decided at a very early age that he wanted to spend his life studying them. While not always the best test-taker, he was known for being a gifted student, and sought after often by the younger years as a tutor. In his seventh year, he was approached by a fourth year Slytherin named Jaya, requesting his help with her Astronomy lessons. She didn't much care for the class, she said, and often fell asleep, so she was falling behind. He was happy to help, and in the end, his passion for the lesson filled her with an answering passion. By the end of the year, she said it was her favorite class.
ADULTHOOD xxx»» Nirav dabbled in a few things here and there after graduating before eventually deciding he wouldn't be happy unless he could pursue Astronomy as his career. His parents disapproved, knowing he would struggle to be successful and 'support a family' doing so, but he didn't care. Roughly six years after his graduation, he was looking for someone to help him write and publish a book regarding some research he'd been working on, and came across a familiar face. Apparently, he'd inspired Jaya so much with his tutoring that she'd eventually decided to pursue the same. Unlike him, she had the full support of her family, who were quite wealthy. The pair began working together, and eventually successfully combined their research and published a book. xxx»» While working on their book together, the pair became very close friends, and then more than friends. The romance moved so quickly that it seemed his family had barely blinked before they were wed. The pair were practically inseparable, and eventually graced with a daughter they named Anandi. However, Jaya eventually came to struggle with the feeling that she'd settled to soon. She loved her husband greatly, but felt dissatisfied in their marriage. Nirav, ever the supportive friend, agreed to grant her time to figure out what she wanted. They separated, and after some time apart she decided she was happier being his friend than his wife. They divorced amicably, and their daughter insists that their relationship is the most bizarre thing she's ever seen.

At times, this can leave her looking rather tactless, but she'd rather have to apologize for phrasing something rudely than for a massive communication error. She tries to be as polite as possible, but when her choice is polite or honest, she'll go with honest and pray for forgiveness. She doesn't believe in a lot of fluff when she speaks. Small talk is practically a cardinal sin when there's work to be done, and she can barely stand it when she's socializing. In general, she prefers for her interactions with others to have purpose. If they don't, she's at a loss.
CLEVER xxx»» Anandi's mind works much like her father's, but she has her mother's organized side to help her keep it all together far better than he does. As a result, she's very bright for her age. She's quick with solutions and can solve puzzles and equations with relative ease. She has a gift for music, able to pick up many songs more or less by ear, with a basic guide to the notes if it's on the complicated side. Her mind processes information swiftly and efficiently. Her one weakness in this regard is, once she's stuck on something, she has to find the answer, has to figure the note out, has to put together every piece of the puzzle. She's quite fortunate that she's so skilled at it, or she would've lost as many hours to her distractions as her father has to his.
CURIOUS xxx»» Anandi likes knowing how things work, how they function. She's more interested in muggle technology than she generally is in magic, simply because she finds the answer 'it's magic' to be boring. Potions are of interest to her because she can study the ingredients and how they interact, the effects of temperature and timing, but wandwork leaves her wishing there were more to it than simple intent and an incantation. As a child, she asked incessant questions regarding these matters, and eventually grew frustrated with a lack of answers. So, she turned towards more identifiable curiosities, such as how a computer works. She would like to one day find an answer to her questions regarding spells, but has settled for waiting until she has a better teacher.
SPIRITED xxx»» Anandi was always taught the value of being true to herself, and speaking her mind. As a result, though she can seem somewhat clinical at times, she is quite passionate. Her enthusiasm knows no bounds, and once you crack her shell, it shows. She tried to keep herself subdued, but get her on the right subject and eventually she fails in this endeavor. Her passionate nature most often comes up when discussing her music, her family, or some moral dilemma she's studied extensively. She believes in fighting for what she believes in, and does so with fire.
TENACIOUS xxx»» A generous person would call Anandi 'determined' or perhaps 'spunky.' A more accurate word, to her way of thinking, would be stubborn. She can't stand the thought of giving up on anything, a trait inherited from both her parents. She is, as a result, ore stubborn than the two of them combined. Letting go of something is tantamount to torture, and she will obsess over anything not done to her satisfaction for days on end. Leaving things incomplete, or giving up on them because they are difficult, means that all the time spent previously has been wasted, and time is a precious resource that she refuses to waste.
AFFECTIONATE xxx»» Anandi's family is very close, and very loving. They are warm-hearted people, quick to show their love for one another. Anandi receives the lion's share of their love, or so it seems. But, rather than becoming insolent or entitled, she takes what is given to her, and shares it in spades. Her aloofness in the face of study vanishes instantly when she is surrounded by those she loves, and she is quick with a sweet word or a warm embrace. She values the people closest to her, and always wants them to know it.

CHILDHOOD xxx»» Anandi's parents wanted more children; she was supposed to be one of no less than three, preferably four or five. However, it seemed that fate had other ideas. The couple struggled with fertility for a long time, never being brave enough to find out who was the weak link. They considered themselves blessed to've been giving their daughter. Anandi was doted on, spoiled by her entire family. She was the baby, born late to the youngest son of her father's family, with a multitude of aunts, uncles, and cousins, all significantly older than she was. She grew up with the praises of her many relatives in her ear, impressing them easily with her musical talents, her mind, her ambitions. She showed magic earlier than any of her cousins had, at the tender age of three, turning the wall of her bedroom a shimmering gold color in place of their previous green. When her parents divorced, she was devastated, having always thought that their marriage was perfect. The fact that they remained close friends appeased her, though saying she'd never tried to convince them to get back together would be a lie. She has yet to meet a single partner for either of them that she's liked, though she prefers her father's taste to her mother's. Likewise, she prefers living with her father, if only because someone needs to be around to make sure he's taken care of. She's not entirely certain how he'll fare once she's away at Hogwarts.

CREATIVE xxx»» Mahavir's family tends towards the academic side of things. While he was sorted into Ravenclaw like the vast majority of his relatives, he was definitely placed there less for his intellect or desire to learn, and more for his imagination and desire to create. He's an exceptionally inventive person, quick-thinking and witty. He likes to take risks just to see how they'll pan out, and comes up with rather interesting ideas when pressed.
HEDONISTIC xxx»» He's a man who loves his pleasures. Nice fabrics, fine dining, if it has a hefty price tag he's probably interested. He doesn't even realize he's doing it half the time, he just seems drawn to the finer things in life. Since being forced to move out of his parent's home, he's struggling somewhat, because his current living situation isn't quite up to his decadent standards. Still, he makes due with what he has, and tries to find ways to fulfill his desires without living beyond his means. He's taken to checking out thrift stores and estate sales to try and snag deals on expensive antique furniture and designer clothing. He's surprisingly good at it. His flat is small, but it looks like something out of an Oscar Wilde novel.
SPOILED xxx»» Up until the birth of his cousin Anandi, a full decade after his own, Mahavir was the baby of the family. He was doted on by his older siblings and cousins, given everything he asked for by his parents, aunts, and uncles, and coddled by his grandparents. He's very used to getting his way, and doesn't quite know how to deal with being rejected. It's been difficult for him recently, since his family finally realized they weren't doing him any favors and decided to force him to grow up and act like an adult. He's learning his lesson, somewhat, but things come so easy to him that the punishment/life lesson hasn't been as effective as his family would've liked.
EXCITABLE xxx»» Mahavir's attention span is focused entirely on what's most interesting at any given moment. All that's required to get him passionate about something is to stick him in a conversation with someone who is already passionate about it. He'll listen to someone go on for hours about their special interests, and by the end of the conversation he's usually just as invested as they are. He feels things very strongly. To Mahavir, every good thing that happens is the same as Christmas morning to a child. Actually, every morning is like Christmas morning, because he sees each day as being full of opportunity for exciting new things.
CHARISMATIC xxx»» Part of the reason things typically come so easily to Mahavir is that he's a very hard man to dislike. He's very open and friendly, and very good at keeping up with friends. He charms people through the clever tactic of... actually taking an interest in what they have to say. He's an exceptionally open person, and very polite. All of it adds up to the sort of person people just tend to get along with. Even in cases where he seemingly has nothing in common with another person, he'll try to find some small shred of common ground to stand on. He knows how to talk to people, and it's never failed him thus far. He's not really taking advantage of people exactly, but he'd be lying if he said he hadn't benefited immensely from being so likable.
FLASHY xxx»» It's not so much that Mahavir tries to stand out. He just does, it's in his nature. He dresses very well, but very ostentatiously. It's not so much that he's trying to put his sexuality on display, but it's certainly a factor. He tends to get slightly frustrated when handsome men don't realize he's flirting with them. Especially since he's rather obvious about it. In addition, he finds that dressing a little eccentrically can open a lot of conversations, as well as attract interesting people. He likes the attention, but it's more that he likes the end result than he actually likes being focused on. Truthfully, he'd rather use his loud appearance to draw people in, and then talk about them. He's an open book, so it's not hard to get to know him. He finds that other people tend to be much more interesting, and would rather talk about them than himself.

CHILDHOOD xxx»» Mahavir was the fourth child of Sahil Chahal and his wife Sarah Eaton-Chahal, and the youngest grandchild on either side of his family (at least, up until the birth of Anandi ten years later). His father's family was very close-knit, and he was a full five years younger than the next-youngest cousin on his mother's side. He was also the only son, and his maternal grandparent's only grandson. The combination resulted in a lot of attention being foisted on him from many sides, resulting in an exceptionally happy childhood and an exceptionally happy child. He wanted for nothing, and generally, wanted nothing, though he'd never turn down a gift when it was offered. He was very spoiled, but rarely asked for anything. Most of the time, something was in his hands before he'd even realized it was a thing to be desired. He grew out of this somewhat as he got older, becoming a little demanding at times, but he was never unreasonable, so the family was content to let it slide.
SCHOOL YEARS xxx»» Like most of his family, Mahavir was sorted into Ravenclaw. Unlike his family, he didn't tend to do very well in school. He was very much a typical Ravenclaw, but not the way his relatives were. While most of them tended to be more book smart, reading and consuming and memorizing and learning, he was of a more artistic bent. He was easily distracted in his lessons, frequently zoned out if the material didn't interest him, and generally didn't seem to care much. The only areas in which he really shined were his creative outlets; Mahavir was a clever child, and exceptionally talented. He was quite the artist, in many respects, and what he lacked in booksmarts he certainly made up for in creativity. Where his cousins and siblings would falter because there was no logical solution, he would find an unusual answer, leaving them all scratching their heads and wondering how he'd done it. His grades upon graduating were nothing spectacular, but he wasn't overly worried about it.
ADULTHOOD xxx»» While Mahavir's paternal family wasn't very well-off, his mother's muggle relatives were exceptionally wealthy. They also believed firmly in having a 'gap year' that could be used to travel, thinking that few things could enrich a young man like discovering the world. Mahavir was more than happy to take advantage of their willingness to fund his travels, and ended up being out in the world for a bit longer than the intended year. At first, his grandparents didn't see any harm in it, figuring that nothing bad could come of the experience. But, as time wore on, they had to admit that it seemed rather like Mahavir had no desire to come home and make a living for himself. It wasn't that he was trying to mooch off his relatives, of course, he was just having such a good time that it didn't occur to him that it should have to end. xxx»» Eventually, the decision was made for him; his grandfather wrote him and let Mahavir know that he had another six months to enjoy himself, and then he would have to come home. Not concerned, he made the most of those six months, and returned home on schedule. Unfortunately, he still didn't seem particularly inclined to 'grow up', and basically couch surfed between relatives. He was always a welcome addition to the household, helping with cooking and cleaning and childcare, but there was still a distinct lack of responsibility in his life. Eventually, both sides of his family agreed to discontinue supporting him, to force him to learn to support himself. They helped him find a relatively cheap flat in Newcastle, and then waited for him to find a job. When he didn't seem to be making much headway in that department, they collectively agreed to give him a date by which they would cease paying his rent, regardless of his employment status.
