He deliberately slowed his breathing as he came to a stop beside Amory's bed and peered down at her sleeping face. Her expression was far softer and more guileless than it had ever been while awake, and he found himself watching her longer than he meant to, frowning when he realized what he was doing. His heart kept up its quickened pace, but its speed had less to do with the chimera than it did his nerves. It was the middle of the night, and while he had never gotten in trouble for being out this late, there was a first time for everything.
Slowly, gently, Thian reached out toward Amory and slid his hand over her mouth.

A little over four seconds later, she began to struggle. The girl wasn't a terribly light sleeper, and there was no way she was staying calm when someone was pawing at her face. She had buffeted the intruder with her wings and was about to curl up and invite her tail to the party when she recognized the horns, the sleep-tousled hair, the eyes lidded with perpetual sarcasm, all illuminated by the dull purple glow at his throat.
She grabbed Thian's wrist, claws denting his skin, and pulled his hand away without letting go.
"What are you doing?" she whispered groggily, capping her question with a yawn.

"A... ah! Tuck those things in!" She wasn't breaking skin or anything, but Amory's claws had always kind of made him nervous. Sometimes her tail did too, which was why he was infinitely glad she hadn't gotten around to using it before she'd figured out who he was. In hindsight, it had probably been a bad idea to sneak around so much.
"What are you... um... doing right now?" It was the dumbest question he could have possibly asked, and he felt like an idiot as soon as it was out of his mouth. "I wanted to show you something." She continued to grip his wrist, but the shackle loosened as she shook off sleep.

Amory abandoned her vice grip as she yawned, bringing her hand up to cover her mouth instead.
"Is it important? Can't you just hang out here 'til morning and show me then?"
She had jolted upright quite violently as she'd woken up, and now she flopped back onto her pillow, ignoring the tearing sound as her horns met fabric. She was silent for about a minute, slowly nodding off again until she recalled that her best friend was standing over her in his pajamas.
She yawned again. "Fine. I'll go."

He smirked, taking her hand without any further thoughts of her claws, now that he was the one who had initiated contact. Thian pulled her gently out of bed and led her down the hall and out of the dorms, into the night.

She tried to slow him down, afraid that they would be scolded or outright punished if they were caught, but it seemed the demon was having none of it. He silently dragged her along, taking her past the edge of the copse of trees near the Academy. Thian slowed when they reached a large, flat rock hidden by a canopy of evergreens, dropping Amory's hand as he took a seat.
What in the hell? Why had he brought her here of all places?
"Should I...?" She flopped beside him when he nodded, a wing unconsciously curling around his shoulder. "Why are we here, Thian?"

He turned to her and for a moment he saw her as he had just a half an hour prior—hair dyed bright with blood, eyes empty. Gone.
Thian rested his head on her shoulder and looked up through the gap in the trees.
"I had a bad dream," he scoffed. "Not even lying."

To her credit, she didn't laugh. Amory did sigh a little though, worming her arm up under his and twining their fingers together. His horns prevented her from leaning in very close, but she still managed to follow his gaze skyward without trouble, peering through the trees to the starry sky above. It was kind of pretty. Not that she would say so.
"What was it about?"

They had grabbed her arm, wrenching her away from him and tossing her aside like a doll. He would have been fine with that had they come after him next, so they could go together, but they persisted in assaulting their initial quarry, drawing thin pipettes from dingy robes and...
Thian shuddered.
"Blood. Death. You know. I'd rather not talk about it."

Which meant it had something to do with her. Had it not, he wouldn't have hesitated to tell her every last gruesome detail.
"Fair enough."
Amory blinked up at the stars for a couple of minutes more, her tail curling lazily behind her as she thought. If they stayed here for a few more hours, they could make it back to their rooms without anyone even noticing they'd been gone.
"You're okay now though, right?"
She jostled her shoulder a little, but Thian didn't reply. His breath fluttered against her collar, deep and even.
Of course.
