What did one do when someone they loved betrayed them? Confront them, of course. It was an opportunity that she'd never had before, when Maya had burned their home to the ground. Now, though...
“Semashi.” She said, softly, “I'm glad you came.”
“Of course I did.” she said, sitting next to Dyakida.
The blades in front of her occupied her hands, but if they didn't Dyakida would have grabbed her girlfriend and shook her. She would have screamed in her face a single word – WHY? But she carved her blades and refrained. “I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Oh?” As if she didn't know, “What?”
Dyakida hesitated as she etched the designs in the blades before setting them aside. She looked in Semashi's direction, her face neutral. “Why,” she asked, calmly, “Have you been spreading rumors about me?”
“What?” Dyakida could hear her stance change, could feel the change in atmosphere.
“I know you've been spreading rumors about me. I have heard some of these rumors..”
“That is simply not true. Whoever told you that, they're jealous! They're just jealous.”
“No.” said Dyakida. She could sense it in Semashi's voice – the menace, the insincerity, the lies. “I know you did it. Why?”
Semashi was quiet for a moment. “Good bye, Dyakida.” she said. Her voice was harsh, as unpleasant as a beast's radula on the skin. She stood to leave, and Dyakida grabbed at her, taking hold of her skirt.
“No. You need to tell me why.”
“No, I don't.” Dyakida felt the air of the kick coming before she felt the kick herself. A shock of pain flowned down her shoulder. “I don't have to tell you anything.”
“You don't deny it?”
She shook off Dyakida's hand, “You're not worth enough for me to bother.”
“What?!” The blades fell from Dyakida's lap as she surged towards the door, trying to catch up to Semashi. “I thought we had something, Semashi!” she called down the cavernous stairs, “Why would you say things like that? Why have you been doing this?!” She knew Semashi was there. She could feel her moving. “Tell me!” She kept moving. For a moment, Dyakida thought that this was truly it, the end of the relationship, and that it would be over without even an answer as to why. “Please!”
The movement stopped. Dyakida's breath hitched. Not having an answer would have been the worst possible situation. Any answer, any answer at all would settle the confusion in her soul. “Because.” Semashi said, “You don't deserve... this.”
“Deserve what?! I don't deserve what?” but Dyakida could already tell – she was gone. That was the answer she had to work with. It wasn't much, and it didn't make sense, but it was all Semashi would give her. “What do I have...” she whispered. She touched her face, feeling how it contorted into an expression of hurt confusion, “What do I have that I don't deserve?”
“Her.” One of her friends voices came from the side room of the hallway. A powerful hand rested comfortably on her shoulder. “You deserve better.”
“I... I'm sorry you had to hear that.” Dyakida managed, clenching her teeth.
“Are you going to be all right?”
“Fine.” Dyakida said, retreating to her rooms, “Just fine.” she said, wiping away tears that had accumulated in the corners of her eyes, “Just fine.”
