Nirmala tended to many guests throughout the months but it seemed Ora was the only one to return often. Now she could at least admit to herself that she had developed a fondness for the other mare beyond simple friendship. She doted and fussed over Ora when they were together, showing affection in her own way. Ora returned that affection, full of delight and eagerness. It was simple on the surface, even if it was not underneath but still it worked for them.
She had consented when Ora approached her about the Wishing Star, curious about what it could bring into their lives. They had gone and wished together and offered a charm of braided hair and molted feathers. Voices joined as well as hearts, beseeching the blessing of the stars. At first there was nothing, and she and Ora had parted ways for a time as was their tendency. After weeks apart, and several other visitors, Ora returned to her bright and and cheerful as ever. Her family was doing well though nothing major had changed.
They went to sleep nestled together the night after her return.

They had fallen asleep with Nirmala's head tucked beneath her own as had become their norm. It was a quiet, peaceful night and they had no idea of the surprise that would be waiting for them come morning.
It was the smallest basket that Ora had ever seen, even counting all of her many many siblings. The wicker was decorated with deep purples, golds and white painted patterns not unlike her own and feathers from the charm they had left with their wish. It was the most precious thing she had ever seen! "Nimmi, dear, wake up! Our wish came true!"
If wish children were like normal ones they would be waiting for the little one inside to make their own way out. Still, this meant they were mothers together! They had a little family! This was so exciting!

Hmnnnnnnnn? "Wish?"
At first her still partially asleep mind didn't register what Ora was on about. She gave her companion and nuzzle and withdrew her head from beneath the other mare's. That was when she saw the basket and... "Oh." Oh. Oh! Oh! A little basket meant a baby! They had a baby of their own! Now Nirmala understood her partners excitement at so early an hour.
She wondered curiously at what might come out of a basket so tiny. A little usdia perhaps? It was a possibility, she knew that children of the stars were not always like the parents that had wished for them.

They did not part again in the time they waited for their little one to emerge. Each took turns seeking food, water or to stretch her legs - like a pair of nesting mothers. It was just falling to dusk and they had settled in for a nap when the basket began to stir. It was subtle at first, little shifts and shakes. The sound of cracking wicker had both mares awake and alert in an instant.
"Come on little one!" She nosed at the hole in the side of the basket, surprised when a tiny wet nose met her own and sniffed her curiously. "That's it, don't be shy. Your mommies are right here for you."
The tiny muzzle withdrew into the basket and the tiny form shifted around, kicking at the already weakened spots to work itself out.

It was time!
Nirmala was so excited. She had seen many foals come into the world before, but never her own! When the little muzzle peeked out of the hole in the basket she laughed. "Yes, come on little one. We've been looking forward to meet you." Their child did seem keen on making its way out, in its enthusiasm the basket tipped over and broke a little further. "Careful now."
Perhaps she could help a little, having been blessed with claws where Ora was not. She pulled gently on the broken wicker with a foreclaw to make a bigger hole and the little life inside took everything into its own paws from there.

The side of the basket outright broke with Nirmala's help and a little... wolf cub ...tumbled out.
That was certainly not quite was she was expecting, but the little cub had been quite clearly fashioned for the two of them. He had her beloved's colors and mane, with her own paint pattern mixed in and green eyes. A delightful little miracle, certainly. Ora nuzzled him gently, careful not to bowl him over and he leaned into her, sniffing and grasping the tip of her nose with his front paws.
"What do you think we should call him?"

That wasn't an usdia baby, or a soquili at all! But it did not make him any less welcome.
When she bent her head to nuzzle their son he turned some and leaned against her too, sniffing his other mother curiously and learning her scent. "What about Ankur? It means sprout or sapling." A fitting name, she thought, for such a little child.
She was all to happy to let him sniff and cuddle as he liked, but curiosity would win the cub over after a bit and he would wiggle away from their noses seeking more warmth. When he nestled himself between them she extended a wing across Ora's back to shield their little one from the night breeze. He must have been tired from all his work in escaping the basket because he went right to sleep.

"I like that a lot." Ankur was very tiny and likely would remain so, at least in comparison to them.
Then little Ankur went and settled himself down for bed. "He has had a pretty full day for being just born. We should rest too, if he proves to be anything like my siblings he will be up with the sun and want to play." That was the way of most foals she had ever come in contact with. There would be many things to figure out in the coming days, but they would handle them as they always had.
