The sun comes up, and with it Shun feels a sudden and pressing need to go to the otherworld. Something on the other side draws him inexorably through the pouring rain to the gates of Waite State Forest. As he passes under the gate, something snaps--a sensation unlike any other, save perhaps the breaking of a bone--and everything goes bloody red. Then it goes white. And then he wakes up in the late springtime sunshine of other ashdown. The asphalt is dry and warm and--not asphalt. It glimmers pale rose-gold in the light. Next to him is Heliodora. "I guess you didn't get a chance to get those cupcakes," she says.

It was the oddest sensation. Shun had never really felt quite an urge quite like that before. He couldn't shake it either. Almost mindlessly, he traversed through Ashdown, seeking entrance to the other side. He didn't even take his motorcycle. He just wandered on foot. Eventually, there was just a sudden snap. Closing his eyes, he flinches as things shifted around him jarringly. The next thing he knew, it was no longer raining. He was in Other Ashdown, and Heliodora was there besides him. The detective blinked a few times, shaking off his disorientation. "Heliodora," he said, still feeling a little bit of confusion. He must have just come into her domain. Once he had his senses all back together, he straightened up and sighed, "Unfortunately not. I was not expecting to see you here at this moment... Those will have to wait until next time."Looking around, he furrowed his brow, "It... felt like other ashdown was calling me."160

"Oh," says Heliodora. "That was me, actually." She seems embarrassed about it, at least. She puts her elbows on her knees. Attached to her ankles are two perfectly intact feet, though one bears a scar all the way around it: a thick and nasty thing. She gestures to the area around her: it's not her demesne at all. It's still the entrance to the forest. Heliodora puts her cheek against her knees, too. All folded up, it's unsettlingly easy to remember that she was only 18 when she disappeared. "I wanted to ask you for a favor."

Shun tilted his head as he looked over Heliodora. The fact that they weren't in her demesne was notable. Immediately afterwards, he saw that she was out on two feet. Somehow her foot managed to leave... wherever the hell it had been earlier. Magic obviously. Though the question was why. "I thought you could not leave your grove..." he murmured. "I take it this favor is more than just fetching a handful of cupcakes. What is it you want?" he asked, crouching down by where she sat, folded up on herself. He had a bad feeling about this. Summoning someone from another realm for a favor couldn't really be good. 270

Heliodora shifts awkwardly. "You think things should be done because they're good, right? Like, morally good. Ethically good. Like, just for the goodness of them. Right? It doesn't matter if you're... scared or anything. If something's necessary for the greater good, then it has to be done. Doesn't it?"

This was starting to put him a little on edge. Shun definitely was not liking where this was going. Perhaps this was something completely innocent, but this line of questioning was causing for suspect, to say in the very least. "For the greater good, yes. Some things that fall under that may not seem so good in the forefront, depending on how you look at it. But some things must be done," he answered slowly, after waiting a moment or so. "You are going to ask me to do something questionable."361

"I want you to kill me," says Heliodora. "I heard about--about Professor Mercer. And I don't have any reason to think Detective Mercer would be any different. And Mr. Watts found Michael, I can't ask him, and... I don't know anyone else. Pax wouldn't let me if he knew what I was doing."

His eyes narrowed as the request came out plainly, as well as her reasons for calling to him instead of some of the others. Shun fell silent for a time. "For the cage, right?" he asked quietly, "Are you absolutely certain this is the only way to break it down? There is no other way?"Lucas wanted to try and find a different way. And Shun did want to try and limit the amount of required bloodshed for the cause. It didn't help that Heliodora was still effectively a teenage girl who probably didn't deserve this fate. He had a feeling he already knew the answer to the question, but he had to ask nonetheless. "Also... do you mean right now? Is breaking the cage now really optimal? I do not think any of us are quite ready to be unleashing the Enemy and... whatever may come with him."510

"If I knew another way, I would choose it," says Heliodora, face twisting in frustration. "If I thought I could get out of this alive, I would! But we always knew that we were going to die--always--and that the most we could do was--" She falls silent. "I had a friend once," she says. "Ming. I mean, his full name was longer. But I don't really remember it anymore. And he thought we were the stupidest people ever for agreeing to do this, and for thinking we could ever get away with this. And he said so, and we pretended to listen, but we still did it. Because we were stupid little kids who saw the world falling apart and we couldn't let it stay that way." She picks at the fabric of her sleeve. "Ming's the one who figured out the trick. How to make it so we'd disappear and you'd all come looking. Because once we made the cage, we couldn't... we couldn't get outside it to put things back the way they were." This is all very interesting, but it doesn't answer Shun's question. "So. Yes. Right now. I mean it. I thought maybe Zac could... maybe... but I already let Ming die to fix our ********. I want to be the last one."

A subtle frown appeared over his features. There was something commendable about all of that, the kids taking action when they saw a problem at hand, but he still didn't like it. It somehow had led to all of this, but at the same time they were not at fault. No, that was reserved for whatever the hell Renard and his friends were doing. He still had to wonder just what they were trying to pull in order to save whoever, as Liam had claimed. He wasn't sure why Zac had been brought up, not being aware that he had plans on trying to take over for her. But apparently he had some sort of idea at some point to have given Heliodora a bit of hope. "There are a few things I need to know first before I do anything else. What can I expect to happen the moment you die?"If the world had been falling apart when the trio took this upon themselves, then there was a fairly decent chance things would shoot right back to that once the last part of the cage fell. There was also the matter of Sunny. He wasn't sure where she played into all of this. 715

"Nothing," she says. "Just leave me where I lie. Pax will find me, and he'll--" Heliodora takes a deep breath. "No one will ever know it was you. I'll have just... disappeared. Like Adoelle." She lifts her head. "It won't make things any worse. I just had the most magic, and I specialized in the right kind of magic, so I was... the containment. Adoelle was the one who directed the spell. And Michael reinforced it. Once he died, we knew that this was it. Now or never. Without all three of us, the spell doesn't work."

She was going to just disappear. There would be no body for the parents. No closure there. For them, anyway. This was all a very grim thing to think about. Adolle has accepted her fate and it sounded as though the girl before him did as well. This was a bit of responsibility that just fell upon his lap. There was still something about all of this that bothered him. At the same time, he knew they needed to break the cage. It just really sucked that kids needed to die for this. But he has said he would get his hands dirty if it came down to it. Shun knew the deaths wouldn't necessarily stop here. He just hoped this was worth it in the end. "Alright," he softly said, "Is there anything else I need to know? About what is to come, our enemy, or anything? Or any final requests?" 867

"This is your last chance," says Heliodora. Her eyes are large and haunting. "With us gone, there's a chance the Enemy will be able to twist all the magic to his own devices if you don't stop him. You don't want that, Mr. Kuroda. Down that way lies stagnation. You know what happens when things stop moving, right?" She falls silent for a long moment. "I don't know what happens after I die. I don't think I ever really have..." She presses a hand to her throat. "But it'll buy you time. Time you otherwise don't have. Magic's like matter, it can't be destroyed, and I have..." She smiles, awkwardly. "I have a lot of it. So I'll direct it and that'll do what it can."

It was as he suspected. He knew it didn't make sense for the enemy to keep on letting them try and try again. Prior he had always wondered if this would be the last one, and Heliodora seemed to affirm that much. This was certainly a gambit. They knew who the Enemy was. It was just a matter of stopping him swiftly once she fell. "Things stagnate. They become stale and progress comes to a halt. Maybe things die in some cases."With a grim nod, Shun closed his eyes and took in a deep breath. This was not exactly how he thought his day would go. "I will try to make this as quick and painless as possible."Shun didn't have anything on him to make this not a violent death. He just had a knife, so it was going to get a little messy, but he would try and keep down the amount of suffering on her part as much as he could. Slowly he reopened his eyes, staring at her beside him. "Are you ready?"It was a question for himself as much as it was for her. 1058

"It'll all die," said Heliodora. "Nothing new will grow. No children. No life. No change." She rubbed her hands together. Her cheeks had gone pale; the ice spiking out between her ribs glimmered along the edges, but she had never threatened a soul and she wouldn't start now. "If you don't think you can pull it off. The defeat of the enemy. I left my notes on the spell in the library. Adoelle's should be in the court, and..." She picked at her skirt. One more time. "Yeah," she said. "Please do it fast."
