Just Desserts was sitting with his classmates on bench, looking around in silent amazement at all that was going on around him. His schoolmates were invited to the TV studio by Synthesis for a special taping. It was interesting to see how the studio worked, each of the employees running about doing their own business. The colt wasn't sure exactly what the program was suppose to be for, but it neat to have a different experience outside of the normal classroom. On the center of the stage was a large table with baking supplies on top. 'Must be a cooking segment,' Just Desserts thought to himself. Maybe if he was lucky, he'd get to try some of whatever was suppose to be made on the show that day. cursedandwandering notes: kindness for JD, honesty for Synth

Synthesis was doing his best to stay cool and collected. Being on a tv set was nothing new to him. In fact he was quite used to it as he'd spent nearly his entire childhood performing on one. But today he was nervous as he paced restlessly around the set. The colt had volunteered to be on a charity show, but his manager had neglected to warn him far enough in advance of just what the show's subject was.
Cooking. It was cooking. The colt had never even attempted to cook even once in his life. Dinner was always prepared by his parents or a professional at whatever restaurant they felt like eating at that particular day. He wasn't even sure he could figure out how to turn on an oven! And since his manager hadn't even mentioned it until a few hours ago he hadn't had time to prepare and he'd already invited his entire class to come watch the filming!
He was going to make a huge fool of himself and in front of everyone who knew him!

From his perch in the audience, Just Desserts continued to Phony watch as everyone bustled around to prepare. He even spied Synthesis, pacing around in circles. Just Desserts didn't know the other colt very well, but he couldn't help but wonder what was up. That pinkish colt was walking around like a nervous chicken, something JD was all too familiar with having grown up around chickens. Creeping away from his seat, he slinked closer to investigate what was going on. "Psssst," JD whispered to get Synthesis' attention. "What are you doing? You look like you might lay an egg. Is this some kind of method acting to psych yourself up?"

The colt suddenly jerked his head up as one of his classmates approached. "Lay an egg?" The red unicorn cleared his throat and faked a laugh. Right, he was supposed to be a professional, which meant he shouldn't be running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. "Oh, that's exactly what i'm doing. It really helps me get in character!" Synth lied, trying his best not to look worried. Thankfully he'd gotten a lot of practice at pretending to feel things he did not. Acting was useful that way he thought with a small chuckle.
"I'm fine JD," he said with a forced smile. "You don't need to worry about me. Thanks for the concern though."
His eyes flicked over towards the set for a moment, reminding him of his terrible fate. Maybe he could just fake it till he made it? It could be that hard to act like you knew what you were doing in the kitchen. He just had to act like he was confident and people would just assume he knew what he was doing.

"Get in character? Are you suppose to be playing a part here? I thought you were appearing as yourself on this show?" The colt was a little confused, as he hadn't really seen scripts or anything. What could there possibly be to prepare for if you were being normal? JD shrugged, not wanting to pry too much. "If you're sure you'll fine, I can just go back to my seat. I'm excited to see what you'll make!"

"Ah ha ha, you're right. I'm just so excited to do some cooking that i got all mixed up. Ha ha ha, speaking of mixing that thing on the right of the counter is a mixer, right?" He coughed. Real smooth Synth. Real smooth. The foal ran a hoof through his hair to try to appear cool. But, his attempt at playing it off just turned his afro into an asymmetrical mess and the colt's anxiety was rapidly becoming apparent.

"That?" JD turned to see where Synthesis was pointing. The closest kitchen appliance to them had a clear tubular structure and small blades inside. "That... is a food processor... it chops and purees stuff." Pointing to the machine with a metal bowl nearby, Just correct him, "that's a mixer." Having a mother obsessed with baking helped the colt to be familiar in the kitchen and with his gadgets. Though to be fair, not everyone used theses kinds of machines when baking or cooking, often people preferred the old fashioned by-hoof methods. "What are you suppose to be making anyways?"

"Ohhhh, right. I forgot," he laughed nervously and looked back over to the set. "We're making chocolate chip... Quiche?" That sounded like a plausible food thing, right? He didn't know what quiche was, but he had definitely seen it on a menu somewhere before. "Oh and that thing is a ladle right?"
Don't mind these questions. He totally knew what he was talking about. Yep.

"So... a chocolate, savoury egg and cheese pie? That... uh... sounds... " Just didn't even know how that sounded. He knew mixing salty and sweet was a big thing, but chocolate and cheese? Bizarre, it just sounded bizarre, but he didn;t want to be rude. "That's an ... intriguing dish." However, as things went on it became more apparent that Synthesis didn't know what was going on. "No, that's a spatula. Haven't you ever used one?"

Well now that JD told him what exactly would be in that quiche the unicorn grimaced. That sounded absolutely disgusting and he had just told his classmate that that's what they would be cooking. As if Synth could turn any redder. The colt blushed and buried his face in his hooves. He might as well come clean, the other foal was about to find out soon enough anyway if he hadn't already figured it out. Maybe if he told the truth then his classmates wouldn't laugh at him about it later. "No... Honestly, I don't know anything about cooking. My food has always already been prepared by the time i come home from filming in the afternoon. Or we go out to eat and then the waiter just magically comes out with the food."
"Do- do you know how to cook?"

Well that explained everything. The poor guy had never made anything before, not even a simple cookie? Just Desserts shook his head in disbelief for a moment. "Not even toast?" Looking around, he could see why Synthesis was getting nervous. Not only was it a crowd of people looking, but everyone in TV land would see him look foolish on without having a clue about cooking. Just Desserts stepped closer and patted him on the back. "I've helped my mom out in the kitchen loads of times. It's not too hard if you have a recipe to follow. Did they give you one?"

zippedsiren I have no idea what they should cook. X: "Nope." He sighed, feeling embarrassed. Did normal foals make their own toast? The colt bit his lip and cast a glance to his classmates. They all probably knew this stuff.
"Oh! Right!" Synth face-hoofed before running over to the set. He ran back with a single sheet of paper in hoof. He didn't know why he hadn't bothered to look at what exactly it was he was supposed to be making so he could have lied more convincingly earlier. But, he was glad he didn't since JD seemed willing to help him.
"Here it is," the red unicorn said, holding the paper out to his classmate.

Just Desserts took the recipe from the other boy and carefully read over it. There was brief sigh of relief, this recipe was a simple one and something he was sure even a novice could handle. "Perfect! Chocolate Chip Banana Bread! This is really straight forward and delicious. You can do this easy." Just Desserts looked at the list of ingredients and then peered at the table. "So the first thing you need to do is melt the butter. But that's really easy, you can do that in the mircowave, just pop a stick of the butter in a bowl and warm it up. And while that's happening you mix all the dry ingredients..." JD paused to check if Synth was confused about what dry ingredients were "the sugar, salt, flour and baking powders. All the powdery stuff basically. See, " he tapped the recipe, "it tells you how much to measure out."

JD seemed optimistic about this and Synth could feel a huge weight being lifted off his shoulders. "Really?" He blinked, peeking over at the recipe. With his classmate explaining things it seemed a whole lot easier. "That doesn't sound so bad..."
The unicorn let out a sigh of relief and glanced towards the stage. "Thanks for helping me out JD, it was really nice of you."

JD smiled, pleased that he could be of some help to the famous colt. "Ah, it's nothing much. Just following the recipe. You'll be great out there!" The purplish colt was positive that his brief tutorial would be enough to boost his classmate's confidence in doing the segment. A stage assistant came over and murmured to the pair, nudging Synth along in a hurried manner. "5 minutes to air now, Synthesis. Time to get ready and get to your station, you can chit chat with your class buddy later." The assistant rushed Synthesis off to his station, leaving JD to watch and silentlly cheer on the side lines of the set.
