Old Ms. Farnack was a long time neighbor, and she had as best he could tell, the same temper that she had ever had. She used to spray kids who got within two feet of her lawn with the garden hose. When halloween came around, everyone knew better than to go to her house for treats, she’d put raw eggs into your bag just to spoil your candy. Her daughter and Husband whom had moved in in recent years, had the patience of saints to be honest. He knew his mother had called in the sound of multiple dishes breaking, loud screaming, but there was little to be done about it other than ‘disturbing the peace’. Ms. Farnack didn’t want taken care of, and even her Daughter couldn’t change that. He’d never have expected the source of today’s argument though. Old Ms Farnack was standing on the porch with a large bag beside her, waving her cane, which honestly she always seemed to use more as a weapon than out of any need for it to assist her in walking, at least not for short distances. He was out front helping to clean up his Mother’s garden that day, which she seldom did her self, despite the HOA for the area, so he heard it all. He wondered how much this had been happening since he’d moved out. “I am going to DISNEY WORLD!!” Declared the older woman, wagging the curved handle of her cane perhaps an inch under her Daughter’s nose. The response was an adamant no. Gentle attempts to coerce her to come back inside. It was not going well.

With his recent promotion, Jeremiah did not actually have to do anything like what he was currently doing. It was expected he would not yet when he had heard the call, as well as recognized who it was from and who it was about, he actually did sigh. When it came to Old Missus Farnack it was best if the highest ranking officer that could be found took care of it. So he caught the young police officer that was about to head out. "You're following me out on this. I'll be handling it but you need to see how to handle Mrs Farnack. Everyone does eventually." The young officer nodded and so it was, not even fifteen minutes later, that Chief of Police Jeremiah Mercer was standing in her driveway watching as Old Missus Farnack nearly clobbered her daughter with her cane. "Diane," he said pleasantly to the daughter, before he stepped towards the old woman. As if he had done this hundreds of times (it was only a handful but he had been dealing with her for years). "Mrs Farnack is there any particular reason why you need to go to Disney World just this moment?"

“Don’t you Mrs Farnack me you Limey b*****d!! You’re not denying me my right to see Micky mouse!! I am an AMERICAN which is more than I can say for you!” She was very good at brandishing that cane without actually hitting anyone, it waggled beneath Jeremiah’s nose close enough to make a small breeze but did not damage, not like her more ‘colorful’ utterances. “Mother!” Diane said, abashed. Zac watched, but he was scowling now for two reasons, Mrs Farnack was now only one of them. Jer might have been getting a dirty look as well. No… he was absolutely getting one. At least till he noticed Zac, and then he’d be rather pointedly ignored.

Zac was on a shortlist of people that Jeremiah had an inherent sense of when their gaze was on him (it was a list of three people. One of which would probably not acknowledge existence ever again. For the moment, however, he could not spare a glance towards Zac but he knew he was that way. "Mrs Farnack, we've been over there. I'm a citizen, I have been for years." He just happened to have dual citizenship but that was neither here nor there. There was not even a flinch at the cane wave, Jeremiah apparently long since used to it. A look cut to Diane and then back to her mother. "Look, clearly your daughter is not prepared for your trip to start right this moment. Perhaps she would prefer to take you on one of those cruises that ends in visiting Disneyland?" Those were still a thing, right? "Mickey Mouse isn't going anywhere and I'm sure he'll be there waiting for you. Actually, if Diane, isn't Mickey on those cruises?" He watched as the daughter nodded a little bit, her eyes a little red. "See? Clearly you should plan this out a bit more and you could have more time to enjoy it."

Zac started stuffing clipped free branches into a basket, his dagger stare now half distracted by collecting scraps of branches before turning back and doing a more ferocious clip clip snap to the defenseless shrubs and roses. “BULL!” the old woman snapped “Dual Citizenship my great grandmothers butt wart!! You just think I’m too old for Disney world you Li-“ “Mother, I do have some vacation time, would you like to go on one of those cruises? They go some very beautiful places. In fact I think they have some other characters on them too. Paul is in calling work and we’re seeing when we can get time off and tickets. Wouldn’t it be so much nicer to go as a family?” That at least had Mrs Farnack turning to talk to her Daughter. Situation diffused by means of cruise lines. There might still be some swearing and cane brandishing but she was at least making her measured way back towards the house and had let Paul, who was on his phone carefully take the suit case back towards the inside of the house.

"I'll be lingering around here for a bit longer, Paul, if you need me, alright?" Jeremiah said, catching the husband with a knowing look. The other officer was directed to head back after a few words and comments on what to note in his report. With that taken care of, Jeremiah turned his focus towards Zac. The words of the fetch echoed briefly. Your son, the little martyr ...Jeremiah crossed over, coming to stand on close but not breaching personal bubble space. "I'm sorry, Zac." Yes, he was opening with that.

Zac glared at him. Wordless, probably petulant glare, tight lipped as he stuffed cut branches and twigs into a lawn basket. He finally did speak though. “Are you? Cause you -really- seemed to have a pretty strong opinion on how SHITTY I was being before. ‘selfish’ I think you said. What changed your mind?”

Jeremiah sighed, walking over and plucking up the extra pair of gardening shears and pruning in a few places (it was not like this was the first time he had done so here, just that it had been a long time). "Nothing changed my mind," he said, taking a clipping and holding it out to Zac to take. "I don't even know what was discussed." Jeremiah glanced over to him. "As it was not me that you spoke with."

Zac froze, and then stood slowly away from the basket. His jaw set and his eyes narrowed. "Explanation. Now." He said still scowling. He was not up for shenanigans or mystery.

"I'm a Noble of the Court, Zac." Jeremiah was still working on the task in front of him with an odd efficiency that had nothing to do with his abilities as a gardener.

"What the F----k!?" It was perhaps not Zac's most eloquent reaction. But it was an honest one. "HOW?! Since WHEN?!"

"Since I completed the trials and put an end to the thing that wore my face." Jeremiah glanced towards him. "I was taken not that long after the ball." Which was nearly two months of time here but it had been more over there, he knew it.

“Taken.” He said firmly, folding his arms. “Let me guess…. ‘Ezra’,”

"Yes," he affirmed. "I was a member of his household." Which was about as much Jeremiah would say about that. If there was a tone attached to the way that Zac said Ezra, Jeremiah very pointedly ignored it.

“Taken… or chose.” Zac said softly. Anyone else he might not have asked. But Jer and Ezra seemed to have a dynamic, one that set him ill at ease. It wasn’t his choice, it wasn’t something he understood, but he needed to know.
