The alarming amount of gelatinous goop being expelled from the sea was hard to ignore; if one lived under a rock and didn't watch or read the news, the strange stuff had still found its way into the city proper. While not exactly beautiful Jack still wanted to take some photographs while it was around: keep a chronicle, as it were.

Chel tagged along because, well, God knew what else she did with her time when it wasn't on the job. Not that he minded; her casual attitude was nice amidst the batshit crazy.

After about an hour and a half of walking from place to place and photographing, discussing what on Earth this could mean, they found themselves in one of the parks. Jack was putting his gear back neatly into his messenger bag as they took a break on a bench, trying to avoid getting his camera wet.

"I'm ready for lunch," he announced. "Don't know about you."

Chel spent the trip being grossed out and upset anytime goop go so much as a foot from her shoes. She really couldn't stand nature and the outdoors in general, and weird dead jellyfish were no exception. That and the inkling that this die off probably wasn't naturally caused what with the earthquake and all. It reeked of magic and Chel wanted nothing to do with it.

But Jack needed someone to hang out with and Chel would stretch herself into silly putty for most anyone who asked.

She trailed after him with their conversation mostly centering on the jellyfish and how much she hated it (and Jack trying to figure it all out because he always tried to figure it out).

She sat on the bench next to his stuff and pulled out her phone to check her twitter while he went and did whatever it is he was going to do in the meantime. Chel had been somewhat off lately, leaning into her hand and looking spacier than usual. She had things to think about.

"F'yer payin' m'down for anythin'." She still had yet to look up from her phone.

The face-to-phone sticky hadn't bothered him at first, but he wasn't a fan at the moment. It reminded him of being peeled off that night and then kept at that certain distance. Something easy to overlook when the gelatinous stuff had captured his attention, but now a thorn in his shoe that reminded him every other step.

He looked at her and said, "I know a few places depending on what you're in the mood for."

"Eh? Whatever's fine," she said, looking up at him with no real conviction on her face one way or another. "What d'you want?" Always Jack's choice, always in other peoples' hands.

"Takeout," was the unsurprising answer; Jack had a love/hate relationship with microwave meals and food made already for him to go. "Soup's always good on a rainy day." There was a pause, some expectancy for Chel to say something beyond just bland agreement.

"You an' yer instant foods," she said, not without some affection in her voice. She sighed dramatically and said, "Alright, just this once."

Good enough.

"It's not instant if it takes fifteen minutes," he quipped with a little smile tugging at the corner of his lips. After naming one of his favorite places, he pulled out his phone to make the order. "Tell me what you want."

(Referring to the food, of course.)

"I'll tell ya what I want what I really really want."

Cue a hip check from Chel.

Cue the eye roll, the bump in return, the monotoned, "So tell me what you want, what you really really want."

Chel grimaced. "Igh. Why you gotta ruin spice girls?" But she didn't look that upset about it. "Just get me some spring rolls an' whatever."

It really didn't matter what she ordered. Chel was one of those people that was a human garbage disposal, happy to eat most anything. You couldn't be poor and picky, especially with a metabolism as fast as Chel's.

"Fun ruining is fun," he answered simply. As he dialed the number, Jack turned his back, prone to a bit of pacing when on the phone as he found standing still awkward.

It was at about the same time that something green and went slid past Chel and grabbed Jack's bag.

Chel was fine to wait for the call, but she turned left and there was a giant hulking green mass. Alarmed at first, instead of alerting Jack she just went straight for the punch.

Chel apparently had a thing for rushing in head first. Sometimes literally.

"Hi, I'd like an order to pick up."

Her fist sank right into a tangle of vines and moss that apparently made up the bulk of the creature. It did make a startled sound itself, however, a gurgling, muted grunt.

The punch didn't seem to stop it from taking Jack's bag, however.

"Name will be Jack. Is the lunch special still going?"

One part of the mass slapped itself onto Chel's face, covering her mouth and a good portion of her head up to her ear and around to the crown of her head.

Nonetheless she kept smashing. Even if she couldn't scream and get his attention, she could fight.

Violence seemed fruitless; at best, Chel seemed to irritate it. As she struggled to do damage, the limb grasping Jack's bag began to peel it open with various tendrils, plucking each item out delicately: his camera, the strap, a battery charger, and a secondary lens. Each was laid out on the ground in a circle.

"An order of spring rolls, too," Jack was saying. "...Sides? Uh." He turned. "Hey, Chel, d--"

He stared. Hung up. Was finding himself rushing forward with an expletive as he tried to help wrestle the othercreature off Chel.
