He still wasn't at all used to her presence, but whenever Rabbit found himself on the other side these days, he was never alone for long. He began carrying around little gifts for his fetch just in case he crossed over, things that they could safely discuss rather than bringing up his duties or his powers. Conversation inevitably returned to those topics anyway, though they hadn't yet today. For now the pair stood just outside the gate that led into the garden, both of them staring at it, each with a squeep on one of their shoulders. Oroh was wearing a long, pink wig, stringy in the rain, and the fool's gold orb nestled in her left eye socket spun slightly as she looked up at him.
"I've never been inside."
"It's ********' creepy, that's why. Even for you."
"No, I just never had reason to wander."
"Hm."
"Are we going in?"
Rabbit shrugged. "Sure."

When Shun managed to cross over this time around, he actually wasn't completely certain where he ended up in. All of the sudden, he found himself in the middle of some incredibly lush place. It might have been the most vibrant part of this side of the veil as far as he was concerned. In any case, he hadn't seen anything quite like this, so at first he wasn't entirely certain where he had gone. But the shadows the crept in a way that was a part of the aesthetic of Other Ashdown. He didn't get to take in the scenery for long, as he heard some voices nearby. The detective ducked behind a tree, not entirely certain who it was that was out there right now. And there, he listened. 132

It was Oroh who pushed open the gate, and she continued to walk in front of Rabbit as they made their way inside. The fetch was on the alert, but it was more of a "we're strolling in a garden" sort of alertness than the "watch out for the cop behind a tree" kind.
The creature on her shoulder was the first to notice something was amiss, though since it was a baby, no one paid it much attention. It squeeped once, loudly, and Rabbit plucked it from Oroh's shoulder in response, cradling it in the crook of his elbow as it squirmed.
"We're inside. What now?"
"We walk."
He did, bouncing his noisier charge until it relented, petulantly gumming his finger. "Nothing's going to jump out at us, right?" Rabbit wasn't against a good haunted house, and it was the season for it after all, he just had a feeling the things that hopped out of the bushes here would be a little scarier than out of work actors in bad grease paint.
"If something does, I will defend you. Doesn't it smell lovely?"
He was still a bit weirded out that she could smell at all, to be honest. "Mmhm."

Shun stayed put, listening to the two. He carefully peeked around the trunk of the tree to get a better idea of who else was here. One was very notably a fetch. The other he just barely recognized to be Rabbit, one of the ones who had been kidnapped for the ball. "Settle down. Nothing hostile here. Not now, anyway." he commented, stepping out from behind the tree. "You seem... healthier than I last saw you."207

Oroh took a surprisingly fluid step closer to Rabbit and raised her arms slightly to shield him, but since the back of her head only just hit his sternum, it seemed more comedic than threatening. The man himself looked momentarily startled, then simply confused. Though he had been paraded around like a sickly little show dog that night, he hadn't actually met very many people.
"You were at the ball? Yeah, that wasn't normal Rabbit behavior or anything, so..." He swallowed. "You're from regular Ashdown then?" This guy was so stoic and purposeful in the way he held himself that he could have easily been a monster underneath.

Shun watched the fetch as she stepped closer to her noble, ready to defend him. He wasn't too concerned with her. If she was anything like Mare, then she wouldn't try anything against him unless Rabbit said her to do something, or if she felt that he was adequately threatened. Then again, he wasn't sure what the threshold for that was, so he still needed to take some caution. But his posture towards the two wasn't threatening in the least. "I was, and I am," he replied. Some people might have considered him to be a monster, anyway. "Shun Kuroda," he offered, before asking, "The court has not given you any further trouble, has it?"323

Rabbit tentatively pat at Oroh's shoulder once, twice, then gently perched the squeep where his hand had been. It huddled under her wig, grabbing her neck with its tiny fingers. When he was sure it was secure, Rabbit let go and nodded.
"The court... no. Pax called us back to tell us what we were or are or whatever, and then we were let go to figure out what it all means on our own."
"I am teaching my lord about power and responsibility," Oroh interjected.
"Yes." Rabbit practically rolled his eyes. "We have fetches now to answer questions while we're here." Oroh had helped him figure out the things he could do as well, though she insisted there was even more to him than what they had uncovered. "I'm Rabbit and this is Oroh." He didn't introduce the man-bird-babies because he had yet to name them. "What do you do? Back home, I mean."

"So I have heard. I have met with a few of the other nobles who were... I guess you could say 'knighted' around the same time. I do not suppose any of you know why you were taken for that purpose?"If Rabbit didn't feel like answering that, he wouldn't press. It was just one of the many curious thoughts that revolved around the whole situation. It had been fairly apparent that none of them actually signed up for that s**t. They were just kidnapped, from the sounds of things. "I am a detective at the Ashdown Police Department," he replied. He didn't really consider Ashdown to be his home, but he knew what the other guy meant in any case. "Also uh... what the hell are those?" he asked, motioning to the things on their shoulders. 461

A cop. No wonder.
He paused, unsure if he should say more, then decided he had nothing to hide.
"I don't know what the others know, but I have no idea why Fa—Ezra took me." The reason hadn't been important once he was at court, but Rabbit did remember the day Father had come for him. I think you'll do. That's what he had said. Rabbit didn't like to think about it and what it indicated about his overall uselessness. "Pax talked about cycles? Like we were this already so we are again? I got nothing."
He didn't bother with the squeep on his own shoulder, the one that seemed to enjoy silent observation, but he did pat the one on Oroh as it yelled again. "They're... strong birds," he said with a grin. "Pets, I guess."
Oroh's wrinkled lips pressed together. She didn't like that he was sharing so much, but she wasn't quite irked enough to interrupt.
"Who else have you met?" Rabbit asked. "Out of the five of us."

Shun watched the weird birds, still not completely sure what to make of them. Were they able to be brought into regular ashdown? Did this guy carrying them around there if that was the case? Man, that had to bring attract some attention. "The other creatures are as unhelpful as always, I see," he muttered under his breath. The court was pretty bad, but everything that resided on this side of the veil seemed to have a thing about not giving straight answers. It was rather frustrating. "I knew Thorne before the incident. After the ball, I have met with each of you except for the one that had been wearing a dress that night. So far it seems like people have... recovered. To an extent."He wasn't actually completely sure what his name was. Shun didn't exactly deal with Hux at all that night. 607

Rabbit nodded. "Hux." The only one he had known before they'd become tithes. Not that he truly knew any of them now, not even Alois. He couldn't say how any of them were really doing either. The pull to do something about that was insistent, but not yet strong enough to act upon, not when he was still confused himself.
"Recovered. Mmhm." His own therapy regimen involved regularly drinking until he blacked out, but that had been a fairly frequent occurrence before his time at court. Now his binges were less for fun and more to block out the knowledge that he'd ended someone's life, even if that someone had tried to kill him first. "I think the longer you hang out around here, the harder it is for you to say what you mean."
Oroh snorted at Rabbit's comment, but she didn't correct him. Instead, she relaxed slightly in a show of appreciation for the man who hadn't tried anything malicious yet. "So, what are you doing here, Detective Shun Kuroda?" she asked. "Do you often come to the garden to spy?" The way she said spy seemed to suggest that he was a dastardly villain, and she was one step away from unmasking him.

"This place does seem to change people. One way or another."And not necessarily for the better. At the same time, not necessarily for the worse either. From what he could tell, sometimes the change was just that. A change. Shun lifted his head at Oroh, scoffing lightly. "I literally just appeared here a few moments before I heard you two entering. I was not certain who you were, so I ducked away, out of sight," he replied. He took note of the tone she had with some of her wording, but he dismissed it for now. He had no ill intent. Not now, anyway. 713

"Oroh. Heel or something. Everybody's just talking."
The fetch only hesitated for a second before she did as she was told, very deliberately not looking at Shun as she wandered a few feet away to examine the flowers.
"So... it's good that everyone seems to be back and okay," he continued, recalling what Temp had said about not being able to tell who was a fetch anymore. At least here, people like himself obviously weren't if they happened to be carting their corpse bodyguard around, but in normal Ashdown it was probably a bit harder to figure out. "Do you guys have, like, cop protocols for this stuff now? Like some sort of registry for all the people who can throw fireballs and s**t?"

The way that some of these fetches were so obedient to their nobles was a little disturbing. For some of them, it seemed like they were totally into their servitude. It was one thing to work under someone... but this was something else. The next question had Shun scoffing. "This s**t is not real to more than half of the department. As far as I know, Mercer and I are the only two active police who are aware of any of this, and who are capable of doing anything about it too. If we start bringing it up to the Chief or whoever, we would be considered insane."The detective sighed, shaking his head. "My job does not have much application on this side of the veil. Not now, anyway."If it did, then maybe he would have a little more purpose. 856

"Yeah. I guess I could see that." Even he had neglected to tell his sister about the weirdest of his experiences, afraid that she would have him committed. And if Shun and this Mercer person were to spend precious hours wheedling powers out of people who probably didn't know half of what they were carrying around, they wouldn't have time to case joints and shoot things. "You're right, though. I don't think this side has cops." It was worrying, even if he felt safer than he ever had with Oroh to defend him. He'd have to bring her another wig to make up for telling her what to do.
"This has all turned out so weird," Rabbit muttered. "If I'd known Ashdown was a portal to hell, I might have found someplace else to move." He noticed Oroh stiffen slightly, and he was sure he'd have to apologize for that too.
