Sunlight flickered through the trees as an earthling boy curled up against the roots of one of the larger trees. Around his side were scattered feathers and other soft pieces of things he had picked up here and there to use as a cushion against the rough surface. Honestly, if one came past they might not even recognize the earthling as a boy, but rather as some strange form of beast covered with pelts, feathers, and leaves.
Yawning, Uzumati stretched out an arm before snuggling back into his place on the ground. It was a perfect time for a midday nap and he was definitely eager for one considering the mess of strangers who had been invading his life recently...

Ziel loved this new found freedom, loved that her mother didn’t worry about her so much anymore. She didn’t need that kind of attention, so she spent her days traveling a little ways off from camp. Whenever she got too far her mother's snaptrotter came and found her. She could never truly get lost and that gave her true freedom, she didn’t have to worry about her journey. That’s why when she spotted something strange, no this was quite stranger than strange she paused and squatted down. Her eyes narrowed, head tilted slightly as she observed this... thing. What was it?
Smiling, Ziel leaned forward and softly placed her hands on the ground. She watched the thing like a predator before she moved closer on all fours. Slowly, quietly, she moved on closer. She only paused when she saw a twitch of a movement. Then she was close, so close she could see that behind it all was indeed an Earthling. Closer, she looked at all the details. Was he hiding from something? What was he doing. So, in a loud and jovial voice said to him,
“What are you doing?”

Of course wishes were never reality. More likely his desire to be alone was somehow causing the world to throw all the earthlings it could at him. Yet, somehow it never ceased to amaze Uzumati about who exactly could appear in his life so when it did happen he was still constantly surprised. That surprise especially grew as he found himself not only hearing some rustlings in the grass, but also being rudely awakened by a rather loud and obnoxious question.
Considering all the more mannered earthlings he had met as of late - Uzumati definitely didn't expect to see something crouched before him. In fact, he was so startled that his awake call caused the boy to leap backwards - sending many of his soft items flying all around them. Who was that? What was that? Was it a beast come to fight him while he wasn't on guard?! As the fog of sleep lifted from his gaze, the boy's widened eyes slowly narrowed into a glare. Wait...it had spoken - so another stranger?
Growling, Uzumati just shook his head before crouching in a similar manner to the girl and backing away a few steps...

Curious, curious, ever so curious. Ziel tilted her head even more as she watched his reaction, he hadn’t spoken a single word to her. However he had growled, which was an entirely knew sort of interaction altogether. No one had ever growled at her and almost out of instinct, or perhaps because of her newfound worry free freedom, she growled right back at him. Though her growl sounded a lot more fake than his and she did have a smile on her face. But as he drew away from her, she drew closer, Ziel never had bothered with personal space. It was a non existent thing for her.
“Can you talk?” She asked the new uncovered leaf boy. “Do leaf people always hide under things like this?” She picked something up that she had no idea it was before extending it to him. “Do you want me to help you pick everything up so you don’t lose anything?” She asked, grabbing a few of the items off the ground without his approval, the least she could do was help him out.

She growled at him?! Needless to say Uzumati had never had someone growl at him before - at least not an earthling. The next thing he knew she was also baring her teeth at him and moving in closer. It was enough to make him take another step back before bracing himself for attack. How did he handle this? Beasts he had fought plenty of, but never a woman! His heart racing in his chest the male attempted to put on a threatening appearance as he attempted to raise his shoulders in a sign of strength...
However, the fact that she was suddenly questioning him and then taking his belongings threw him yet through another loop. Was she just messing with him? Was this some sort of play? A way to get his mind all bothered so that she could easily overpower him with a surprise attack? His gaze narrowed, but at her offer of help the boy just shook his head. No - he wasn't going to fall for such tactics!
Though as she reached for a rather long and blue feather Uzumati's hand darted out to grab it so that he could protect it. Other things he could gather back, but this one he had finally found again after giving the first away. So there was no way he would let some strange creature weasel it from him right before an attack...

Why was he so scared of her? She wasn’t scary was she? Ziel glanced down at herself, maybe he’d never met a Hybrid before? But that was just silly... Or maybe not, maybe he was confused by her appearance, she did look very different than anyone else she’d met prior. Patting herself, Ziel straightened out a bit.
“I see you must be very confused by my appearance,” she lifted a finger into the air. “But don’t worry my mother is a shifter and my father is a water earthing and they made me. So I’m from around here you know, you don’t need to be afraid of me.” He still hadn’t said anything so, Ziel stuck out her hand towards him. “I’m Ziel!”
Then he grabbed the feather right out of her hand. “Hey!” She called at him, pouting a little. “No need to be rude!” She pulled back and sat on her butt. “You know you really need to talk and say something. It’s not nice to ignore people.” Was he born in the wild or something!? Ziel took a good glance at his appearance, maybe just maybe. It certainly looked like he was from there!

Her appearance was not even the half of it. If Uzumati spoke he probably would have offered her a witty retort, but instead all she received as a snort at the statement. He didn't even know what those other races were so honestly she could have just been something else to him. He knew she was strange, but the names didn't make it any better. Uzumati tilted his head slowly as if to study her. What was this madness? She had gone from being another predator to suddenly talking like an earthling?
As she stuck out her hand, Uzumati took a step back. There it was! She was doing a surprise attack! A long pause as he just stared at the hand as if anticipating the next move...and then nothing save for more words. And even a retreat? Clutching the feather in his hands, Uzumati frowned as he studied the rather talkative girl. Some words did catch his attention, however, and he shook his head at 'not nice'. His uncle would chastise him again for not having any manners...
Sighing, Uzumati copied her by sitting down. Then ever so slowly after one more hesitant look around - was this a trap still? - the boy carefully raised the hand without the feather and offered what appeared to be a wave.

Why was he shaking his head? What was he disagreeing to? Ziel narrowed her eyes at him, this was the most frustrating person she had ever met before! Why was he waving?
“Why are you waving...” she paused before her eyes grew wide. “It is because you can’t talk! Did you get your tongue cut off? Maybe eaten by some wild animals? Maybe you weren’t born able to talk at all!” grabbing both ankles, Ziel rocked back and forth for a bit.
“I’ve never met someone who couldn’t talk before, you can open your mouth right?” She tilted her head.

Uzumati almost rolled his eyes before shaking his head wildly at her assumptions. Who would cut off their tongue?! He just...couldn't remember how to speak. The thought made his gaze go towards the ground sheepishly before he glanced back at her. Open his mouth? Frowning, the male tilted his head once more before opening his mouth quickly enough and glancing away again.
What next? Was he supposed to be doing tricks to appease the woman he thought was going to attack him? How did he even end up in this situation? Uzu groaned in frustration before reaching out to straighten out another feather which had gotten crumpled in all of the excitement...

Ziel leaned forward when he opened his mouth, excitement written all over her face. And then it was closed just as quickly as it had opened, but she knew he had a tongue.
“Alright alright mister smarty pants.” She shook her head. “Then you don’t know how to read or speak!” Yes that had to be it! What else could it possibly be? “Do you want me to teach you? I’m a very very good teacher you know.” yes she would help him and maybe finally have a proper conversation with this wild leaf boy!
“I’m not here forever but I can teach you some and then you can find someone else to teach you as well!”

Uzumati turned his gaze away from her with a light flush. How could she teach him something like that? Still, it was intriguing in the least....could he learn again? The boy blinked a few times before slowly ever so slowly scooting closer to the girl with obvious interest on his face. His hand also slowly reached out to her with a tiny green feather - almost as if offering payment perhaps...

"Oh no, no need. For feather exchanges!" Ziel held up jer hands and shook her head.
"Now lets see here," grabbing a stick she began producing some letter on the ground. She weote down all of them caredull before pulling back and smiling at her work. " Okay so first do you know any letters? Even if you only know one that's a eeally good start!" she clapped excitedly before regarding him eagerly.

Frowning, Uzumati kept his prize then. This was definitely the strangest of strangers he had encountered thus far. Her actions had his full attention as he gazed at the ground with a furrowed brow. Letters? His mouth was actually moving forming silent sounds as he studied the things she was writing....in the back of his mind something registered but he groaned in frustration. Was he truly supposed to be doing this? Following those squiggles gave him a headache! It was far less painful to fall from a tree at this rate...growling at the strange squiggles - Uzu prepared to turn his back before one did actually catch his attention. Tilting his head he poked the ground towards one of the first ones with interest. What was this?

"Okay growling will get you no where here sir!" She put her hands on her hips and frowned deeply at him before she started laughing and shook herself. "Just kiding, but for real I don't understand growl" Even when he pointed she didn't know what he meant.
"Can you try making this sound? It kinda sounds like ahhhhhhh. Go ahead try it!" Ziel urged him on with a soft smile.

Now she was disappointed in him again? Uzumati's head was spinning. First the faked attack, then the hello followed by talk of well talking and letters just simply confused him. He stubbornly pointed to the letter with a frown and only paused after she asked him to try making the sound. Slowly, Uzumati opened his mouth and simply closed it. Brows furrowing with concentration the boy opened his mouth once more and then again nothing. Leaning his head back in frustration the boy did manage somehow during his aggravation to make a deep and guttural, "Aaaaah." Which of course surprised even himself. Blinking, Uzu quickly looked back towards the girl as if she were to blame for the strange noise...
