User Image The walk back had been long, as Mikree had expected. They arrived at the Watchpoint after dark, coming through the tunnels that Blackwatch frequented so as not to raise the alarm from the Overwatch side of things. Their trip back had started with Mikree scolding Reyes for his actions, but eventually that had tapered off as relief finally took hold of the tan lion. They had to stop to rest frequently, mostly for Reyes' benefit but also for Mikree's who was essentially carrying the other lion. The first water source they had found had also served as a bath for Reyes, opening up the wounds again but washing his fur free of blood, which meant that most of the flies that had found them remained behind.

Exhausted but needing to let Morrison know Reyes was alive, he led his boss to his office so he wouldn't have to sleep among the other Blackwatch members while so severely injured. His plan was to settle him down, find Morrison, and find a healer. He was relieved, therefore, to see a familiar lion standing in the small office as he slowly brought Reyes in.

"Commander," he said dryly. "Found him."

"Oh god."

Those were the only words that managed to make it from Morrison's mouth as he turned, breaking his pacing, to face the incoming pair. Heart seizing his throat, he fought back emotions that he'd rather save for later. A messenger falcon had found them, having spotted the pair of Blackwatch agents well before they arrived. Since then the Strike Commander had been occupying Reyes' office. It had taken a lot of effort to slip away without being noticed by the rest of Overwatch, but he had managed by some sheer amount of luck.

'Luck is just opportunity and preparation.' The echo of the phrase Reyes had told to him back during their long days and cold nights spent training bounced through his mind as those character-defining blue eyes saw the shake his partner was in. The Blackwatch commander was going to need all of the luck he could get.

Reyes was slipping in and out of consciousness by the time they had made it back to the Watchpoint. On the way back his body had begun to slouch, paws dragging and the weight he had added to Mikee only upping with each mile. Mumbled statements had begun sputtering from his mouth, each making less and less sense until they finally stopped while they were heading to his office.

Beckoning him in and leading them towards a pile of black sleeping furs towards the back. Reyes' bed. At least the color wouldn't show the blood, but they'd still need to be changed after they got him stable.

"How long has he been like this?" Morrison suddenly asked, eyes sternly looking at Mikree after having realized that his mate's...his partner's eyes were blinking open and closed at a worryingly slow rate. He would have words to share with the tawny agent once they could be alone. The last thing Reyes needed was either of them arguing.

Mikree very nearly dragged Reyes to the pile of furs so he could lay down, the other lion exhausted and in pain. He settled him onto the pile carefully, taking care not to jostle his side which was ripped open pretty badly. A medic could come and help, but that was about all they could do now. That and pray.

Mikree glanced at Morrison, a grim look on his face. "Dunno for sure. Found him like this midday yesterday. Lots of blood, all dried. Probably was like that for at least two days before I got there." On the plus side, most of his wounds had started to scab over again now that they were done their most strenuous walking. He wasn't bleeding freely from anything anymore, although some blood still did ooze out between the scabs. Now it was a matter of getting him fed, watered, and rested.

The frown present on Morrison's face only deepened further as Mikree kept speaking. Days. He had been alone, bleeding, for days. The Strike Commander's heart ached as he lowered his head to let his nose come to rest under Reyes' chin. "Uthando..." It was one of the few words he had picked up over the years the two of them had been together. It was a name that Reyes hadn't called in him in years.

The leader of Blackwatch groaned as he leaned into the touch, trying to move towards it but was quickly hushed by Morrison's gentle voice.

The pale body settled himself on the furs, staying close enough to offer warmth and comfort, but gentle enough to try not to agitate the wounded body. Those normally cool eyes looked from the now sleeping body of Reyes to fixate on Mikree. Anger had washed away anything else he was feeling. "Do you have any idea what happened to him?"

The younger lion watched a bit awkwardly as Morrison spoke to Reyes. He finally had to look away as the pale lion settled down beside the dark. He had never flat-out asked Reyes about his past with Morrison, but he'd get snippets and assumed things here and there. He knew that a rift had been put between them once Overwatch was founded, but before that...things had been very, very different.

Morrison's voice brought him back to reality. The urgency to get Reyes back was no longer surging through him and his own wounds from the battle with the dark lioness were starting to ache and burn.

"He hasn't said much of what happened," he said, his voice a bit heavy with exhaustion. "But when I got there there was a huge black lioness waitin', as if she knew someone would come. I fought her off and another black lion came chargin' in, but they left right after that. I dunno if it was them, or if they were workin' for someone....but no hyenas. Anywhere. Didn't smell 'em, didn't see 'em..."

Morrison's brows knit with concern as he watched the younger lion ahead of him slowly begin to succumb to the exhaustion that was setting in. He had moved non-stop, or so he assumed, to bring Reyes back to them. What Mikree said next was even more worrying. No omnics, not even just a regular hyena clan. Nothing. What had been out there then? Had it been a trap? Why Reyes if so? If they were wanting to take down Overwatch, why not him? Were they hoping he would come for Reyes? A quiet curse left Morrison's mouth. They had nearly gotten their wish in that case. Whatever the reason, there would be time for questions and answers once Reyes recovered. For now he turned his attention to Mikree.

"You look like hell, soldier." There was a gentleness in his voice as he watched over him with a kind smile. Gratitude written over his face, his eyes saying 'thank you' and it was all easily seen in the way he gave himself up as a pillow for Reyes to lean so heavily again. The kid deserved some kind of damn formal recognition, but they both knew that was unlikely to happen given Blackwatch's secrecy.

Blue eyes turned to look over Mikree's shoulder. "Illa," he called, quickly answered by the sudden flapping of wings. Within moments a small blue bird swooped in, diving and circling around the three before landing before the Strike Commander, hopping the rest of the way to reach him. "Go find Merci. Bring her back here. Do not take no for an answer and impress the urgency of the matter." A little nod from the little avian messenger and it was off and out of the den.

"Agent Mikree," Morrison spoke once he was sure the bird was gone. "Come here. You need rest. Merci can look at your wounds while she's here as well and if I don't order your rest, she will."

"Aw, shucks boss, thanks for noticin'," Mikree said with a tired but amused smirk. He felt like hell, too, but he had been through worse many times. The one that came to mind first was the mission with Reyes where he had nearly fallen out of the Citadel. That had been awful. And then another time with Deadlock when he had been just a cub, starving and aching from the long bouts of walking they'd been doing. While he hadn't really been injured then he had no sense of suffering, so to his young mind that had been the worst.

The command to stay made him hesitate. He knew he'd be visited by the medic eventually, but Reyes definitely needed her first right now. The dark furs did look inviting - he didn't have anything quite like that back in the area he usually slept in - but there was something about Morrison and Reyes that held him back. It was rare to see Reyes in such a vulnerable state so that itself was disconcerting for the young male, but seeing him and the pale commander fit so perfectly together even after their little bouts of bickering....well. He felt a bit out of place.

"I'll just stand here 'n wait for her," he said with a shake of his head, declining the invitation to join but remaining close by. "Reyes had enough of me comin' back here, I'm sure. Could use a familiar shoulder to lean on." Not that he himself wasn't familiar, of course, but Morrison and Reyes went way, way back. There was that bond between them that arguments couldn't sever. He was at his weakest and Mikree knew only those close to him would allow the dark lion to rest properly.

For a moment the thought of ordering Mikree to rest crossed his mind, despite being Blackwatch, he and Reyes were both technically under him. Still, he couldn't fault the other male lion from turning down the offer. Stories had likely been shared down in Blackwatch's 'lair'--as many of Overwatch liked to call it. Most of the said stories were likely rumors, exaggerated stories about the Strike Commander. Hell, most of them were probably told by the lion that was currently sleeping on him.

Morrison couldn't help but sigh softly, letting himself have the privilege of looking down at his long-time partner, mate, lover. Hell, there were days he didn't even know what they were. Sometimes it felt like they were enemies, at each other's throats so easily. "You've been there for him. More than I have been, Agent Mikree." Even when thanking him, there was a layer of professionalism in the way Morrison spoke.

Of course, he was referring to the recent events that were still unfolding. While there would be words exchanged about Mikree's choice to leave him out of everything despite orders otherwise, Morrison couldn't argue with results. That damn rank, that goddamn rank was the reason he hadn't been able to go along, hadn't been able to help. What good was his position if he couldn't help the one person who mattered?

"I doubt he'd want to wake up to my ugly mug anyways." Considering the last time they had spoken face-to-face, it had resulted in an argument.

Mikree shrugged one shoulder - the one that Reyes hadn't been leaning on the whole walk back - and glanced back at Morrison. He knew if he had the option Morrison would have been right there with him, or even perhaps ahead of him in finding the dark male. Reyes meant a lot to Mikree, of course, but there were some things that just couldn't beat out a long, established history.

"Not because you haven't wanted to be there," he said, his voice tired but gentle. "Just goes to show how much of a stubborn idiot he is, though. Needs two grown lions keepin' tabs on him," he added, a bit of his usual joking tone returning to his voice.

He snorted softly as Morrison tossed in his own little jab aimed at himself before sitting down. He could at least take a load off his feet if not curl up and sleep. He didn't want to rest fully until Merci was here.

"Gettin' a beatin' like that can change you," he said, recalling his own multiple moments of getting his a** kicked that stripped away his cockiness and pride, leaving him ashamed and thankful that Reyes had been there to save him. The dark lion had flat-out thanked him, after all. He had never heard those words leave Reyes' lips in that order before.

"I betcha he'll wake up thinkin' you're the prettiest thing he's ever seen, premature white mane and all." He really couldn't help himself sometimes.

Morrison's face suddenly tightened, swallowing hard as he hastily turned his head away from the younger Blackwatch agent. He was trying not to laugh. This kid, the one that had managed to actually snag him with a claw way back, had managed to inherit part of Reyes' wit and even had the courage to use it despite how much lower he was in the chain than Morrison was. The suppression could only last for so long before his laughter, warmhearted and kind, filled the room. "You better watch yourself, agent. I'll only be this lenient once." He was serious, but could anyone really take him serious when he was smiling that broadly.

"As I'm sure you know, I'm not privy to what goes on down here. Reyes' suggestion, but one that's kept us going. Still, he can't help but gloat about how well you work with him. His 'shadow' he calls you. Seems to me, every time he goes missing, a mission I presume, you seem to be missing as well." There was no accusation, no challenging tone, it was an observation of how close the two had become and how far he had fallen from Reyes.

The Strike Commander let his shoulders sag. "You'd be surprised just how many times we've been like this. Though usually it was me being injured to this point. Reyes was normally the one to bail me out of shaky situations." Azure eyes travelled down to his sleeping partner, nosing a bit of the curled mane out of Reyes' face before turning his attention back to Mikree.

Part of him wanted to be here when Reyes woke up, part of him didn't. Whatever smile had been on Strike Commander Morrison's face faded until almost nothing was left and in exchange worry began to set in the form of knit brows and firm lines. "I'm going to go find out what's taking her so long. Stay with him, Mikree." Without waiting for the younger soldier to disagree or challenge him like he seemed so fond of doing, Morrison removed himself from Reyes' side, letting the older commander lay gently down onto his side.

As he rose and passed by Mikree, he paused. No words spoken, no looks exchanged or given, nothing but a quiet exhale before moving on and out of the room, leaving the two injured lions alone.
