Boredom was the main cause of all of Marrow’s naughty little shenanigans. It had become so consistent lately that it may be considered a sort of addiction. The rush this little monster got from doing unspeakable things was well worth the risks of getting caught. The pale Freshling was becoming such a little adrenaline junkie. When tagging restroom stalls in his doodles had become far to common of a practice Marrow turned to other petty crimes. Such as robbing other Nightmares of their trinkets.
His theft began as something simple. He would take things that weren't his from the lost and found, or pick up a stray article of clothing off a hanger that wasn't his. Slowly it escalated to the level he was at now, which involved a new bad habit. Breaking and entering. Marrow would test dorm doors to check if they were locked. If they weren't then the naughty little hybrid considered all the belongings inside fair game. This just so happened to be his state of mind as he crept silently into a fellow Freshling’s room that afternoon.
A single glowing red eye peeked into the small crack in the ajar door. It flickered with a mixture of emotions as the rush of Marrow’s activity began pumping through his tiny veins. No signs of life seemed to be coming from the dorm so he slunk in before swiftly shutting the door behind him. The curtains blocked out the wavering sunlight of a gloomy Autumn afternoon. The only thing to guide the young Freshling to the light switch was his flickering glow given by his tendrils. At times Marrow loathed their tell-all tendencies, always giving out his feelings of anger or excitement, but in moments such as this he was grateful for their soft illumination.

Bailey had spent his morning working on a family sketch in his dorm, art supplies scattered about on the table in the middle of the room. It was unusual for him to be up before Lori, but considering the topic of his heart he didn’t want to see her cry. So he’d been secretly waking up before her, getting some work in, and then crawling back into bed before she could get up. Well, that morning he didn’t hear her waking up. Didn’t hear her creep up behind him and spy on his work until is was too late.
“Is that Mom and Dad…?” Lori had been surprised to wake up that morning after her favorite brother. He had to be up to something, he always slept in late. She had been as quiet as she could manage sneaking over to him. She stood on the tip of his toes to peek at his work, only to let out a little gasp when she recognized the lovely Chimera in the art work. The tears were already coming to her eyes. “We’re gonna play hide and seek now. Try to find me!” Lori fled from their room in a flash and when Bailey tried to run after he he ended up tripping over his own tail, knocking over his chair. It was never a good idea to give Lori a head start. It was going to take him hours to find her and fix this.
“Lori, wait!” He had to explain. It was well into the afternoon at that point and he’d been looking for her in all of the places where they usually played. Unknown to him she had looped around and made her way back into their dorm, hiding out in the closet on her side of the room. When she heard the door open and threw her hands over her mouth to stop herself from laughing. She could only assume it was Bailey and she was so ready to get out of this closet and breathe some fresh air. She was just waiting for him to open the doors. While she might not know it, Bailey was actually just now making his way back toward the dorm, only after exhausting all of his other options. He had stopped by the Cafeteria first to pick up some sandwiches, it was time for lunch and he was hoping the food might put him back in her good graces.

Since nobody was around Marrow thought it would be safe to shed a little light on the room he had slipped into. That helpful glow radiating from his big red eyes gave the room an eerie atmosphere. It’s blood red color reaching off into the far corners and even beneath the doors, giving away that there was something not quite right about the lurker in the room. Finally, with the flick of a switch the room was filled with brilliant white light, much more useful in his hunt for goodies. He never took anything of value. At least not of value in his eyes.
The invading Freshling began to search the room of anything interesting, only to find that it was fairly bland and nothing really piqued his interest. That is, until he came across a drawing that had been left out in plain sight. Art always seemed to catch Marrow’s attention, whether or not it was good or bad in his mind. At first all the curious hybrid did was stare at the picture, trying to decide what it was of. Just a couple of Chimeras really. Nothing all to creative about that. In his mind it needed to be fixed, and he was just the youngster to get the job done.
Sitting down at the table, unaware of the hidden Chimera hiding away in the closet, Marrow took a pencil in hand, tapping the eraser to his chin as he though. How should he improve this work of art for the owner? Gears began to grind in his head before finally the cogs all started working together and down went the lead, scribbling new lines over the paper. He decided to give the Chimeras extra limbs to start with. Something that might have been considered a mutation by any older Nightmares. A head here, a leg there, and how could he not put two tails? He gave them sharper claws and hollowed out eyes that gave them a haunting undead sort of appearance. Marrow always had a sort of obsession with the idea of death and so he incorporated it into a lot of his art. So he kept scribbling, making the sketch truly his own without realizing Lori was just behind the closet door and Bailey was making his way back to see the monstrosities that had been made of his parents portrait.

Lori was starting to wonder what her brother was doing. He had been in the room for a couple of minutes now but he hadn’t said a word, just turned on the lights. She heard him rummaging around with the things on the table. Was he even bothering to look for her? What sort of jerk brother did she have? He was always there for her and had never given up on looking for her. Did he care more about his...his...art...more than his sister? Why couldn’t he have just told her about what he’d been doing? She couldn’t take this anymore, she threw open the closet door and before realizing who she was even talking about she yelled, “What do you think you’re doing!”
Bailey wasn’t far from the door when he heard his sister yell. Who was she yelling at? Was there someone in their room? They didn’t exactly have any friends, not yet anyway. He felt a surge of adrenaline as he rushed to his door, flinging it open to see the scene before him. Some stranger had his art supplies in his hand and his sister seemed to just be realizing that there was some strange individual in their room. The wrapped sandwiches in his one hand dropped to the floor and he pulled his arms up into a position that suggested he was ready to fight and that he actually knew what he was doing.
“Who are you and w-” He noticed the picture on the table and was furious for the first time in a long time. He was usually a decently mellow Chimera, but he had worked so hard on that. It was of his parents! And all he had left of them was a single picture in a frame by his bed, his memories, and that one piece of art he’d been working on. “What are you doing?” For Lori’s part she just watched the scene unfold in horror. Oh gods, her brother was going to beat up this kid and there was nothing she could do about it. He was in their room. Messing with their things, how could she defend against that?

He was nearly done. Just one last touch. The cherry on top of this perfect little sundae of a drawing. An obnoxiously large mustache right on the mother’s face with tips that girled up as though they were groomed with nothing but perfect in mind. He was quite pleased with himself in that moment. He had turned this bland portrait into something extraordinary. “Beautiful,” He finally said but that was just about the same exact moment as when Lori decided to barge out of the closet, sending chills down the hybrid’s spine. He didn’t know how to feel in this moment. Frightened of being caught red handed? Perhaps he was furious for being interrupted during such an important finishing touch. Either way his tendrils began to flare and their hue began to glow like hellfire.
Just as he was about to throw the pencil at the Chimera and make a run for it the door to the dorm flung open as well. Was he being ambushed? Trapped by a pair of tiny little winged pests! The Freshling sporting a shorter blond hairstyle dropped what Marrow could only guess was food and put his tiny fists up as if ready to fight with physical power. Oh great. The nerves began to set in, causing Marrow to slowly stand and back away from both of them, further cornering the larger but outnumbered Freshling. The menacing little geist litch began to flicker, fading in and out unintentionally. He had never been caught this way. Not in the middle of his heinous acts before.
“Back off!” Marrow barked out in a voice that was loud and booming but wavered just a tad bit as his body did at the end. “I was just making it better. You’re welcome,” he sassed the pair of blond twins who looked strangely identical. He had never seen anything quite like them before so it wasn’t a surprise that he kept having to give a double take, eyes flicking back and forth between them but more so staying longer on the young Chimera who looked like he was about ready to throw a punch.

Better? He was just making it better? Bailey was just starting to get over the loss of his parents. Enough that he could actually work on a picture of them without drenching the picture in the process. And here was just some random, albeit large, stranger in their room ruining it. Bailey tried to rational it in his head, the other kid didn't know him at all. He couldn't have known how much it meant to him, but well it still made him very angry. He looked to his sister, trying to figure out what she wanted him to do.
Lori was practically begging Bailey to not harm the poor kid with her eyes. She tried waving at him to lower his arms but he held them firm. Oh gods, this was useless. Bailey needed someone to take out all that held in rage on and well, here was his chance. "Well, you won't be getting any thanks from him." She tried to sneak a bit closer, if she could just get between him and Bailey maybe this wouldn't go from bad to worse. Bailey was fast when he wanted to be though.
He saw Lori move and decided he didn't want to forgive this person. No way, and he didn't want Bailey to get between them either. They'd have to settle this between them. He launched himself at the other kid, hoping that the size disadvantage would be leveled out with his tail and claws Of course Lori bounced into the fray as well. This was gonna just end up being a weird dog-pile at this point....

No thanks? Well, that was rude, wasn't it? Marrow had even given the picture a stylish mustache! Did they have any idea just how hard those were? All the curvy lines and detail put into it! Sure, it was fairly messy and obviously done by a young Nightmare but in the child's eyes it was a masterpiece he was considering stealing for his own. He'd proudly take the picture for his own collection and tape it right above his headboard proudly. It would receive his admiration due to how well he had edited the picture but also because he had taken it from another. The little hybrid didn't know just how rewarding it was to have something given to him instead of him stealing all the time. Nobody had ever given him something he wanted. Closest thing to a gift he had ever gotten were clothes or a warm meal. Not exactly something a young Geist-Litchling would appreciate, right?
Tension rose as he saw Lori trying to side-step. What was she doing? Something sneaky that's for sure, but Marrow saw it! He locked his eyes on the girl, snarling slightly at her motion. A huge mistake on his part. While Lori tried to get in between them this gave Bailey an open shot. Next thing he knew both Freshlings lunged at him and down when the big boy. "Gah, get off! You crazies!" The weight of two Chimeras, despite their compact size, dropped him to the floor and limbs began to flail. "Just make another ugly drawing then if you don't like it!" He hissed and began to play dirty, using his teeth and bony fingers to try and pry the other's off of him. "I'm not kidding! GET OFF!" Marrow was beginning to grow teary eyed as he realized he couldn't manage to get away. Losing certainly wasn't his favorite thing.

"Get off of him Bailey!" This was complete chaos. She was trying to keep Bailey from hurting the other Freshling, while also trying to fend off attacks from the other kid as well. Poor thing, to him this must have looked like they were ganging up on him. But well, he was the one that came into their room without their permission. Wait, why was she trying to help him again? Mostly because she didn't want Bailey getting into any trouble with the caretakers. If they messed things up here they could get shipped back to the Scepters....
"No way!" Bailey was struggling to fight around his sister in this awkward sandwich of a freshling pile. He hadn't really given himself any time to vent his frustrations after the death of his parents. Then this kid just waltzes right into his room and messes with his things. If he wasn't going to fight because of that, then when else would he? He could see that the other kid was getting scared though and even Lori was starting to tear up at this point. Did he really look that mad? "I don't want to go back home Bailey!" That seemed to do the tick at least. With two freshlings in tears underneath him he finally rolled off of them both and turned his back to them, sitting and crossing his arms in front of them. What a bunch of cry babies. Seriously.
Once Bailey was off Lori quickly righted herself and put her back against Bailey's, even crossing her arms. But she was glaring daggers at the stranger in front of her. "Sorry about my brother. That picture meant a lot to him, but he had a right to get mad. Even if he shouldn't have tried hurting you." She jabbed her elbow into Bailey's side, knocking the wind out of him for a second. He knew that was his cue to apologize as well, but there was no way he was going to do that!

Marrow had honestly not been prepared for a brawl. Who would have thought such violence would have come from just modifying a picture he found in some person's room. It wasn't even that 'good'. Well, at least that's what Marrow would say to justify why he did it. Honestly, inside that twisted mind of his he just wanted to be apart of something beautiful. Bailey had a talent and Marrow may have gotten a bit jealous when he saw the work of art was better than his typical graffiti marks he'd leave here and there throughout the school. He'd never speak such a confession though. Not to a single soul.
Marrow was scurrying back, trying to put as much distance between himself and Bailey who looked like he could go for round two at any moment. Marrow liked to talk a lot of crap but when it came to actually getting into fights he was more than just a little hesitant. Not so much for the fact that it hurt. His tolerance for pain was impeccable but the thought of making a mistake and actually going to hard on someone and breaking them. Mental torture and manipulation was fine in his eyes but permanently traumatizing somebody or breaking a bone? Marrow wouldn't be able to cope with the guilt. Those pale red eyes floating in a sea of black studied the way Lori tried to apologize for her brother while keeping close. It seemed she wanted to do the right thing but throwing her brother under the bus wasn't something that was acceptable. Odd. Marrow had never known loyalty like that.
"It was just a picture..." Marrow still was trying to reason with the crazed boy. "You can always make another one," and the boy couldn't help but mentally add 'and it'll probably be just as good'. He sighed as he stayed huddled up in the corner, adverting his eyes away from the twins. What he wouldn't give to just curl up and sink away into the floor right then. "I... I need to go," he quickly stood up without apologizing and started to head towards the door. Marrow just didn't know how to say sorry. It wasn't exactly part of his vocabulary, but you could tell he was quite shaken from the whole experience.

Lori felt bad for what had happened. If only she had noticed that it was a stranger in their room before Bailey had gotten there. Then she could have just played it off as a friend or something. Or even just scared him away before things could get to the point that they were at now. When the hybrid stood up and back away so did Lori, hold her hands out in front of her meaning she meant no more harm to come to him. Bailey rose with her, but still kept his back to the two of them. At least Lori had stood up for him, at least mostly anyway.
"Yeah, we have all the time in the world to make another picture for Mom and Dad." Lori gave Bailey's shoulder a little squeeze and that seemed to help him calm down. He let out a deep sigh and ran his finger though his hair to further help himself calm down. Okay, so now he was actually starting to feel bad. The kid had just messed up a drawing, something he could easily start again. And this time he wouldn't have to hide his work from Lori. "Just leave already...." Bailey pouted and turned around to go flop on his bed. Hopefully the comfort of his pillow and blankets would put him in a better mood.
Lori stood by the door, waiting for the other kid to head out. "I really am sorry about Bailey. Usually he's a lot more fun but...well. We lost our parents not too long ago. And our family just shipped us off here so they wouldn't have to deal with us anymore. It's been hard." She sighed, it wasn't something she usually liked to talk about, but she hoped it would help explain Bailey's reactions a bit more. "My name Lori, by the way." The next part she added in a whisper. "Bailey's actually a lot of fun to mess with normally. If you ever want to hang out some more, well you know where to find me." She giggled that adorable, yet maniacal, laugh she had down pat before waving him out the door. She'd really like to see Marrow again, after all he was just the sort of trouble maker they used to be before the incident. She had a feeling that in a strange way they could all actually be friends after this whole thing cooled off.

Marrow's hauntingly pale yet ominous eyes were locked on Bailey as if he were a ticking time-bomb. What if he went off again? Lunged at him and got those claws scratching at his thin corpse-like flesh? The young hybrid cringed at the though of getting mauled, despite how truly tiny this freshling was in comparison to himself. Bailey rose to his feet and kept his back turned. Marrow kept an eye on him, not able to read his expression clearly but ultimately, in what the troublemaker assumed was defeat, he went and slumped down onto his bed. Finally, Marrow felt like he could take his weary eyes off him and focus on the girl who was trying to be the peace maker of this little war.
As she ushered the intruder to the door Marrow was a bit reluctant to follow at first. Not only because he enjoyed doing the opposite of what people tried to tell him, but also because he wanted to secretly make sure that little pipsqueak was alright. He had never seen anybody so broken down because of his shenanigans. Was there really such thing as taking something 'too far'? After all, it was just a stupid picture! That last thought on what this was all about truly set a little flicker of anger in the geistling, making his tendrils flicker in irritation. It was then that Lori spoke and explained just what the picture had to do with their given situation. They lost their parents. The shock of it kept Marrow silent and his mind reeling on the fact that he had never known his parents. Maybe it's better than having known and lost them. Perhaps he should consider himself lucky.
No, not lucky. Just not as unlucky as Lori and Bailey.
Marrow listened but kept his eyes in a mild glare as she continued to speak on the matter. Silent and curious about their situation but not wanting to give it more attention than need be. It wasn't until she gave that offer to hang out that Marrow's jaw finally opened a little in shock. "You want to hang out?" he asked as though he were skeptical. That was all he managed to say before giving a hesitated shrug. Perhaps she wanted to get back at him or trick him somehow but for now he gave a simple nod. He would be ready for her retaliation if it came. He'd brace for it. For now though he decided that misery loved company and he shouldn't pass up an opportunity to maybe make a friend just as depressing as he was.
With that Marrow gave the tiniest of waves and began to walk back to his dorm with a mind full of curious thoughts about the twins.
