Morrison was the one that should have been speaking. As much as Reyes didn't want to admit it, but the man was good at speaking to dignitaries, appeasing other politicians to keep the peace. He couldn't be here. Overwatch wasn't supposed to be here, but here they were and Reyes was tense though he didn't let it show.
Here he was walking beside a lioness whose pelt shone like a setting sun against the darkness that had settled over the subtly bloodthirsty pride. Their talk was leisurely but was laced with hints of business in between requests to tell the other about possible routes to other pride, influential members of her pride that would be worth making business agreements.
They had arrived at different times in favor of splitting up to cover more ground, with Mikree watching out for their target, but was given leave to enjoy the party as well. The party which was more extravagant than anything that Reyes had ever seen before. Food, that was being ignored, drink, that was receiving the same treatment. The controlled fires, penned in by rocks that were all as larger or larger than Mikree's head, giving the highest tier of the pride a magnificent glow while the stars shone above as a spectacular backdrop for the event.
And of course there was talk filled with gossip about the two strangers who had arrived and who now wore necklaces belonging to the empress' house. They had received them before they had parted ways. They may be temporary, but given the family, they were attached to they were no less beautiful than Reyes had imagined they would be.

The party was finally getting into the swing of things as Mikree moved around the various groups, pausing to stop and chat with them as he went. He was keeping an eye out for one particular lion, but he wasn't too worried about spotting him. They had all night, after all, and he was sure he'd come across the duke in his travels around the party. His wardrobe had changed sine they had arrived. Before he had sported a handsome red pelt over his shoulders and a single golden cuff on his ear. Now, after meeting with the Empress, he wore one of the very fancy necklaces that denoted he 'belonged' to the royal family tonight, along with Reyes. He was pretty sure this was as close he'd ever come to being a prince and he was going to soak it up with gusto. The rest of Ana's jewelry made an appearance with more gold decorating the tan lion, the firelight catching it as he moved around. More cuffs adorned his ears as well as his tail, a golden bangle on one wrist and a few rings on his paws. They felt a little funny but he knew losing one would mean the wrath of Ana, something he didn't want any more than death. Finally, he wore a new pelt over his shoulders. It was the intriguing hide of an okapi, thin and lightweight with rich dark brown that rivaled Reyes' natural coloring, but that ended with the trademark white and black stripes. He was quite pleased with it, even if it was just for a charade. The others at the party seemed to find it wonderful as he could barely take two steps before someone new approached him to talk. Mikree was in his element. He was charming and sweet and just a bit too flirty, leaving those he spoke to in his wake wondering when, exactly, he had swept them off their paws. He found he enjoyed leaving a little trail of swooning felines behind him, although he was sure he'd never be able to replicate this stunt. Charm and a smooth voice only got you so far. Mikree was positive the necklace and his faux title were doing most of the work.

"Your Grace, I believe our agreement will be most agreeable wh--" Reyes words were interrupted as he caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye of his agent, his project, his prodigy, his...his what? The commander found, for the first time in an long time, his mind was coming up blank. Which quickly prompted the striped ruler to smile knowingly before gently nudging his shoulder, snapping Reyes back into the here and now. It seemed that the Empress had been sure to have someone help Mikree look his best as well.
"Forgive me, your Grace. I was distracted." his voice was confident again, nothing like how he had floundered, grasping, raking at his brain for words only moments before.
"I could tell," the empress was young and sometimes naive, but certainly not blind. "There is nothing to forgive. Tonight is about sparks, creating new flames and igniting old ones." In truth, it was to celebrate the empress' birthday, but these festivities were almost always about love as well as the focus shifted easily to her not having a consort to share the throne with. "Perhaps you should go mingle, tonight should be shared."
"And leave you to these beasts? Never." The unnormal casual tone, even bordering playful, were odd for Reyes to share. It was a guise, but it worked well enough to cause the bright empress to burst out laughter befitting her young age. A smile couldn't help but creep onto his face as that laugh became the catalyst for fond memories to come flooding back.

"Yes ma'am, sure as the day is long," Mikree said with a laugh as an older lioness asked him if he was always this charming. "Just born under a lucky star. Although I know a few lions that'd pay a pretty price for me t' shut up every now n' then."
The little crowd he had gathered voiced their 'outrage' at the thought of someone not enjoying listening to him speak, and he had to admit it fluffed his ego up quite a bit. Mikree had never been short on confidence and his ego had certainly become more tame recently, but he was still a young adult that thrived off being around others and their kind words and compliments went right to his head.
He excused himself after a bit of laughter, once again turning his eyes to the crowds, scanning for their target. He had yet to see anyone who fit the description of the lion he was looking for, and he hadn't seen Reyes in quite some time either. He had never liked being alone much, but he knew better than to assume he was.

It didn't take too long for Mikree's exuberant chatter to form a group that had attracted the attention of a very striking male. Large, but still smaller than Reyes and Mikree, he was full-bellied--bordering on fat--with a thinning mane. Dressed in a section of a giraffe's skin that covered a good section of his dark stripes the spread over his steel blue fur. All of this was accented by small bits of silver and roughly cut of gems. He was at least 'something' to look at, even if wasn't all pretty. He was their target.
"My, my, my, you have quite the tongue on you don't you?" the question was rhetorical, something that didn't need answering, but would probably receive one anyways. "Could you share a story with an old man? It's been ages since I've heard anything exciting and by the way you managed to procure a necklace to my cousin's family, I expect you have many to tell."

Mikree turned as a voice carried to him over the din of the party. It was one that carried weight and importance and that had tone that made his lip want to curl into a sneer. Instead he schooled his expression, keeping the smile on his face as he turned the face the other male.
Well, he thought to himself as he spotted the giraffe-patterned hide. There's his problem. He'd been looking for a lion without any sort of decoration at all. This was certainly him, though, and he couldn't believe his luck.
"Sure thing, got plenty'a stories," he drawled, not letting up the attention he was giving to the lion just because he was his target. Now where was Reyes?
"What kinda story are you lookin' for, sir? Adventure? Romance? Death-defying stunts? I've got 'em all, all you gotta do is pick."

Reyes was nowhere to be seen.
"Romance, of course, to commemorate such a wonderful night and our meeting." The slur in the lion's voice was extremely obvious and if that didn't give his intoxication away, then the slight wobbly state he was in would. He had no shame. He looked back only once before devoting his entire attention to the decorated Mikree. His gaze had been taken by two nearby lions, muscular, but still smaller than either of the Blackwatch agents that were present at the overwhelming party.

Mikree gave a little chuckle, turning up the charm as he took in the state of the male before him. Brown eyes flicked off to the side, following the smaller male's gaze, and noticed the two rather burly lions that were not so much hidden in the crowd as they were blending in. They wanted to make their presence known, but subtly. This lion wasn't one that would be easy to take down, but he was sure they'd do it. He just needed to bide some time as he waited for Reyes to appear.
"Romance it is," he said as he stepped closer, motioning for the duke to follow him a bit away from the group he had been chatting with. "Ah, where t' start?" His mind pulled blank after blank before he finally settled on a story he could easily weave the other lion into to draw him in and hold his attention.
"Well, I think I've got just the one," he said, finally pausing in his stroll. He turned to face the other male, a bit closer than was needed and a rather alluring look on his face. "Although I think it might be best if we settled down to tell it. Might take a while, y'see, and with all the chatter 'round us it'll be hard for you to hear if you're too far."
He shifted to lay down and motioned for the older male to do the same.

The greying grand duke nodded enthusiastically as he followed after Mikree like some kind of puppy, quickly flopping onto the ground, his ears forward and body fidgeting as he waited expectantly for his story. It was like he was young again and it showed by the shine in his eyes.
At some from the time he had last caught a glimpse of Mikree and now, Reyes had been swarmed by the empress' family, all wanting their turn to talk to the frazzled commander. He wasn't used to being the one getting attention. No, that was Morrison's job. He was the one to deal with questions, to make the statements that kept Overwatch from going under.
Scarlet eyes looked right passed one of the overly-glamorous felines that had been speaking to him. The sound of the night melted away as he saw Mikree...with their target. They were chatting, the striped male laughing, and they were laying near one another. When had his fur bristled? When had he nudged his way between the bodies that kept him locked in their circle, only muttering an "excuse me" under his breath as an afterthought. Paws moving on their own accord, he approached, walking right passed on of the flames that illuminated the night. No one even tried to stop him once they saw the empress' smile.
His heartbeat drummed loud enough in his ears that he thought for a moment Reyes thought his heart would beat out of his chest.
The fiery orange glow lit up his figure, displaying his attire with ease. A plain white fur, thick, with a hint of a floral fragrance from the bright roses that held a reddish-pink hue, each one carefully tucked in-between the furs. Reyes walked with purpose, his stride confident, though there was a hint of anger...no...jealousy, in the way he moved across the upper section of the hill. With each movement, the chains that held his cloak in place rattled against the necklace that dangled from his chest.
"Care to dance?" Reyes asked, his voice more demanding than he meant it to be. When the Grand Duke's eyes lit up and he started to move, the commander quickly shook his head though offered a silent, sultry grin as an apology that instantly had the aging lion sitting back down as he looked between the two 'merchants'.
Without waiting, without an answer, Reyes turned his back to the pair, only glancing to them to ensure that Mikree was following.

Had this been anyone else, Mikree would have enjoyed starting to spin a tale of a rich, rogue lion that bested any that he came upon, champion of the underdog and slayer of the wicked and evil. He never enjoyed lying, but at least in this capacity he could view it as telling a story rather than blatantly fibbing. He picked up on details of the older male and guessed on a few others, such as the vibrant state of his coat in his youth or perhaps a more imposing figure. He went on to say how he was sure the mysterious striped rouge had been nothing more than a myth, but one day he stumbled across a rather vicious band of hyenas and had been at their mercy before the arrival of this nameless hero.
"I swear to you, sir, I thought for sure I was a goner," he said, pressing a paw over his chest as he closed his eyes at the 'memory'. "But all those hyenas froze on the spot as this mighty roar ripped through that valley. They took off faster'n you can say hippopotamus and I was left standin' there, bleedin' and robbed, and in the shadow of this vigilante, who did I mention I coulda sworn was you when you came up to me earlier?"
He paused in his story as a shadow fell over them, the firelight causing it to dance back and forth. He looked up and felt both relief and surprise at the sight of Reyes, backlit by the fire and looking like he was on a mission. It took Mikree a moment to take in the full effect of his boss' new attire, but the stark white pelt with the soft flowers woven in made him look as if he fit right in with this crowd even though he knew the personality that lay beneath the disguise.
The offer to dance made him pause and he glanced at the duke with an apologetic smile. "Hang tight, darlin'. I'll be back to finish this story for you." He got to his feet and followed Reyes, much as he had the night atop the Watchpoint. Just without the bouncing.
He caught up to the darker male and let a low whistle leave him. "Damn, Reyes, you're lookin' mighty fine in that pelt. Didn't think you had the whole aristocrat act in you, but looks like you proved me wrong.'

The duke nodded, far too intoxicated to care, but watched the pair with an intrigued interest.
"Shush, uthando. No names, remember?" There was a strong purr, a roll in his words that hadn't been there before as he moved, sauntering forward, basking in the warmth of the nearby fire before turning sharply to take the lead in this dance for two. Reyes' strong chest was suddenly pushed flush against Mikree's, their manes melding into one, letting rubies meet soft earth as their eyes met.
"You forget, I've been doing this longer than you. I can be many things, including royalty if needed." There was a gentle sway in his hips as he moved to the music, the songs that filled the air as the paws of the pride's infamous bards continued hitting drums likely bought from another pride from some faraway land. His body was as predatory as his eyes looked in that very moment. A tiny part of him screamed 'stop!', but it was wholly ignored.
They were not the only ones. Other pairs, some larger than two, danced to the words sung into the air, paws moving to the beat. They were just one of several, but many eyes were on them.

Mikree rolled his eyes slightly at the correction. No one could hear them here, after all. But Reyes was one to stick to the rules like no one he'd ever seen, even if they were harsh ones to follow. The purr in his voice kept the younger male from straying too far, led along like shadow following its castor as they took up a spot in the dancing area.
The sudden contact made Mikree pause in surprise and he flicked his gaze up, meeting Reyes' evenly. Since he had joined Blackwatch he had grown to be as big as the commander, as he had proclaimed when he had been nothing but skin and bones, and he had finally started putting on the muscle now that his growing was done. Reyes still had him in weight, but Mikree was closing in fast.
"Didn't forget, darlin'," he returned, cocking a brow with his go-to grin settling onto his features. "I don't mind admittin' when I was wrong."
He kept close to the commander as they moved, the feeling of dozens of eyes watching them only boosting his confidence. He loved being the center of attention still and now was now different. His dancing style was different from Reyes', but he settled into the close contact dancing fairly well.
"Never took you for a dancer," he added after a few minutes of letting the song flow through him in silence. "Not sure I'll ever figure you out completely."

That damn grin, those damn eyes, everything about Mikree's face and way he spoke set his blood ablaze.
"You don't know the first thing about me, kid. Dancing's in my blood." he replied with a coy smirk, as the two moved, the dark body moving deep to the beat that echoed all around them, drowning out the words, leaving them only the soft sound of mumbling. It was just them as far as Reyes was concerned. Nothing else really mattered.
It was true. Reyes was typically closed off, keeping business and his personal life entirely separate. Mikree had gotten glimpses behind the wall that he had so carefully built over the years in service to the world. But in this moment, it opened, just a little bit. "Do you want to figure me out?" The question came as a surprise for even the commander. He hadn't expected that thought to actually slip out and the look on his face afterwards put that out for Mikree to see with ease.

It was rather strange to be subjected to a smirk from Reyes at such close quarters. Usually that kind of expression was reserved for right when a mission was going perfectly - which wasn't often - and Reyes knew they had it in the bag. It was also usually followed by someone being killed. It was a bit different now, of course, but as much as Reyes liked to talk about being able to wear as many hats as he needed, his acting skills weren't nearly as polished as they could have been so a bit of that 'mission smirk' carried over, making a tingle run down Mikree's spine that would normally be his cue to turn tail and run before he was the one laying on the ground, bleeding out. He pushed through it, though, and decided to give his mind a break by letting his head shift from being even with Reyes' to easing forward, allowing him to rest the side of his head against the darker lion's. He allowed them to speak quietly without other's hearing while still keeping their dance fluid and close.
"I think everyone wants to figure you out, darlin'," he said with a low chuckle. "Can't be the lion we know and love all the time, hm?" He'd seen a bit of that normal lion that resided somewhere within Reyes, the one that hated sending off recruits to their death, the one that needed to eat and sleep like the rest of them, the one that didn't like being alone with his thoughts after too long. And now that he'd seen a bit of it, he wanted to see more. He owed Reyes his life and he respected the other lion for what he was, but he felt it was time to learn more about what made him tick under that scowl.
Shifting his weight a bit, Mikree pushed forward against Reyes, lowering his voice even more. "Ingabe ufuna ukuba kuqondwe?" he asked, a tone added to his voice that could be taken for a flirtatious tone or simply a questioning one.

Everything stopped. His breathing, his muscles, his movement. Reyes could have even sworn his heart did too.
Those words, those damn four words flooded his ears, his mind and they rocked him in a way he hadn't felt in years. Except, this time, he felt like running. Like his mind was telling him to bolt, to leave, to do anything except what he was doing. Reyes' head had pulled away from the touch on his cheek to stare his dancing partner in the eyes, his own half-lidded. Was he glaring? No...it was..something else. Concern? Mouth open, Reyes went to say something but found his voice was not coming. Defeated, his mouth shut, forming a firm line instead. Instead, he let only his shallow, quick breathing sound between the two of them.
While staring at Mikree, trying to focus on something, to ground him, to bring his breathing back to normal, he found himself looked passed him. His gaze had fallen on their target and was pleasantly surprised to find the old, fat lion watching them with an interest. A wicked grin spread over his face, ensuring that the grand duke didn't see before looking back to his subordinate, his voice low. "Follow my lead." There was a silent 'And make sure you're convincing, that didn't need to be said.
Without warning Reyes pulled back, breaking the contact that he had been growing comfortable with and a deadly glare on his face before his paw reached forward to hit the other agent across his face. No claws at least and the blow was significantly softer than anything he had thrown in their sparring matches. A snarl rose in Reyes' throat.
"I can't believe you!" his voice risen, tail flicking wildly. "You whisper her name to me. Would you rather have her than me?! After everything..after everything that happened tonight?" There was a pain in the dark lion's voice that was almost overly convincing but with all eyes suddenly on them, he had to make it feel legit. "Fine. I'll find someone who actually does want me."
Reyes quickly huffed and swerved to weave around Mikree's body and head back to the grand duke. "I saw you with him," his voice was low, sultry. "I also saw the way you looked at me. Care to keep me company? I can show you some of my moves if you want." It was an invitation that the older aristocrat didn't need another second before he was nodding furiously. The grin that grew on the commander's face was almost predatory as he moved passed the cousin of the empress, letting his tail raise to trail under the other male's chin as they began walking towards the edge of the upper tier, far away from the crowd. While the duke's guards attempted to follow, they were quickly shooed away.
There was a spark in Reye's eyes as he listened to the older male's questions and attempts at humor, but even though Commander Reyes knew that this man was about to die, he laughed. It wasn't genuine, but part of him wanted to get a rise out of Mikree, to help make their whole charade feel more real.
