Cordelia's brow quirked up in question at the building she floated in front of then. Steel eyes scrutinized the piece of paper she held in her hand before looking at the building once more. This was the place right? After all this was the address her phone's GPS had brought her to, so it had to be it...right? The only reason she was questioning it was because the Lab had said this Lorenzo guy was a Necromancer and had first hand experience in all things death related. This place didn't look one bit mystical or magical. It looked more like a lawyer's office or something. But the Lab thought it might help her deal with some obvious issues she'd been faced with recently, though honestly Delia wasn't so sure how much a strange human could help.

She sighed heavily in resign, crumpling the scrawled note into her light green jacket's pocket. It wasn't too cold yet, but Cordelia's grandfather had insisted she take something in case she needed it. He really would have preferred to be there with her, but the snake really didn't have an interest in coming here to begin with. The only reason she agreed was so he'd get off her case about it, and her only condition was if she could go alone. His condition, bring a jacket. Cordelia couldn't help cracking a little smile at that memory. It was something familiar, something that reminded her of Ebony...The Basilisk shook the thought away as soon as it had popped in her head. No, she wasn't going to think about that right now.

Quickly, the black Frei floated up to the door and knocked light. No answer. She tried again with more force. "Uh, ello? Is anyone there? My name's Cordelia. The Lab sent me."

From the open window on the second floor, a girl could be seen peering out at Cordelia, and she helpfully offered, "Try the buzzer!" through the window screen. "Or better yet, I'll just text him." She scrunched her face up in concentration, and in a few moments, a winded looking man in a long black cape opened the door. He took a moment to catch his breath, then straightened up his posture to be more Professional, giving Cordelia a bright smile.

"Cordelia Shade, yes? I'm Lorenzo Fisch, the necromancer. It's wonderful to meet you!"

He opened the door fully and gestured for her to come in. While the outside of the brownstone building looked completely normal, the interior was decidedly less so, though not in the stereotypical skulls-and-candles way one might expect from a necromancer. Every necromancing tool or decoration that might otherwise seem to be objectionably spooky had been arranged cheerfully, or sometimes painted to be a less ominous looking color. There were candles, but less dribbly than scented to cover (unsuccessfully) any faintly lingering odor of formaldehyde. Pamphlets lined the wall, all of them with titles such as "YOUR UNDEAD UNCLE AND YOU- RESPECTING YOUR UNDEAD FAMILY MEMBERS". There was a pinboard with holiday cards and photos from what must be clients- every one that included a family photo had someone undead in it, or, more commonly, an undead pet. Everything was carefully arranged to make people feel at home.

Lorenzo moved past all this. "We'll actually be upstairs in my apartment, if that's okay with you. Since you're not actually here to solicit necromantic services, I can't really treat you as a client per se, but I can speak with you informally and see if I can help in any way. As a guardian, I'm more than happy to help any raevan who may need to talk to a post-life specialist."

He hesitated, his hand on the door to the apartment and added, "You may have seen the raevan in my care- Her name is Vesna, and she's quite eager to meet you, but if you feel at any point overwhelmed, I've made it clear that she's to give us space."

His phone buzzed and he pulled it out. "Ah. It's from her. Uh, for you." he showed her the screen, which read:

Vesna

A voice caught the attention of the Basilisk and she looked up to spy a hauntingly beautiful girl in the window. Confused, she looked back down at the door. "The buzzer?" Before Cordelia even got a chance to compute the location of said buzzer, the door flew open and the Frei couldn't help jumping slight at the sudden appearance of this Lorenzo.

"Uh...nice to meet you too..." she replied somewhat automatically, doubtful she was even remotely pleased to meet him as she floated inside. Cordelia was barely listening to the human as she followed him through his office/home. With each passing glance at the items that decorated the place, the Raevan became less impressed. This guy was a necromancer right? Shouldn't things here look a little more...necromancy? Sure there were some odds devices here and there of which she had no idea what they could be used for, but everything seemed so...orderly and sterile. Ugh, it made her think of Ebony and her obsession with everything having its own place and looking prim and proper. The girl sighed and tried not to delve too deeply into what thoughts and emotions that had brought up then. It was something she really didn't want to talk about too much right then and was afraid that Lorenzo might want to "elaborate" on it more or whatever these psych-type people did.

At the word Raevan, Cordelia's attention was finally brought back to center stage. Oh right, this guy was suppose to be a Lab guardian too. Now that she looked at him closer, the snake was wondering just how young he was. Raising a curious brow, Cordelia wondered if he was even old enough to be a guardian. I mean, come on, that cape looked like it would swallow him whole in a moments notice if it could. As if Cordelia had any right to judge someone's age based on their appearance alone.

Her wandering mind came to a halt as a phone screen was offered to her. A message? For her? As if weary of the device, Cordelia moved in slow to read the text. She had to stifle a laugh. What was up with all those emojis? Smiling for the first time since she got there, Cordelia pointed at the phone and asked, "Should I text her back or can I tell her in person that it's okay?"

"You can tell her in person," Lorenzo replied. "I'm sure she's waiting right behind the door."

He wasn't wrong. As soon as he stepped into the apartment, a Frei floated up into his face, waving brightly. "Hiii!" she said, craning her neck to look behind him at Cordelia. To Lorenzo, she said, "I know you guys'll be busy talking about, like, serious stuff," here she made a face, "But I just wanted to say hi before I got out of your way..."

Lorenzo cleared his throat, gently nudging her aside to give Cordelia some room to get through the door. "Getting out of the way won't be necessary," he explained. Turning to Cordelia, he said, "I see you're still a Frei, but would you like some water or tea or something?"

"I want some tea!" Vesna chimed in. "We have a great white peach tea, it's super cute." She tilted her head at Cordelia and asked, "What else do you eat?? We could get you some of that, too, maybe, if you wanted!"

And sure enough as soon as the door opened, it revealed a bouncing Frei of whom was just dripping with gothic like elegance as well as excitement. The flowers, the pale skin, the rare black sclera eyes...in looks alone, Vesna reminded Cordelia much of Vyn, the rose Raevan of whom she had befriended a long time ago and had yet to hear of in just as many years. The Basilisk might have been quite saddened by that thought if not for the younger girl's highly animated antics right then. Looks aside, this Raevan's mannerisms mirrored the snake's own, rather of her younger self that was. A complete opposite to her looks in way of personality, Delia couldn't help chuckling a bit at thinking of how bubbly and eager she had been when first born to meet others of her kind and become their friend.

More in response to Vesna than Lorenzo directly, Cordelia smiled warmly at the Rusalka as she gave her dark head a gentle pat. "Ello Vesna, you can just call me Delia if you'd like. It's a pleasure to meet you." Floating further into the room, Delia took a seat on the closest available seating, assuming this was where the human would want to conduct his session. If she had legs, she'd probably be crossing them at this moment as she tilted her head to the side in thought. "As far as food goes, I'm not sure if it is because I'm still a Frei or not, but I'm not overly fond of human food. I usually stick to my preference of smoke, but please don't worry about me. I've feed well recently so there's no reason to fuss."

Taking the younger Frei in once more, Cordelia asked curiously, "Do you often eat human food? What's your favorite?"

"Delia!" Vesna tested. "Hi Delia! Vesna's kinda too short to nickname, but if you wanna, you can call me whatever you want." She paused to consider this offer, and added, "I mean, so long as it's cute."

She wrinkled her nose and said, "Yeah, when I tried tea at first, I thought it was really gross! I guess I've gotten used to it. Well, I can't really drink strong tea still, or anything. I just kind of wanted to fit in? I see a ton of food pictures on the internet and stuff, and I wanted to blog about human food, too." She reached over for a crescent moon shaped compact lying askew on the coffee table, and elaborated, "I usually eat reflections, cus of my essence. Cesc made me this mirror a while ago so I could eat on the go. Eating smoke is cool, though! It's kinda mysterious. You're kinda mysterious, too, huh?? They told Dad that you had a near death experience, and now you're back amongst the living. It's like some kind of story!"

"Vesna," warned Lorenzo.

"It's a serious real-life experience that I am taking very seriously," Vesna amended dutifully. Her guardian nodded, satisfied.

"Aaaaanyway, where were we?? Human food!" Vesna circled back to Cordelia's original question. "I only drink tea, since we know that's safe. Dad says I can try other food when I grow a stomach, so I'm trying hard to grow up." She flexed comically. "And then when I can eat human food, I want to try sweets, mostly, because they look really pretty on Instagram. What about you? What kind of stuff do you wanna do now that you're not near death?? We should do that stuff!"

((Sorry I didn't mention it before, but one of Vesna's powers is actually a magical glamour! People see her appearance as what they expect to see based on their general impression of her, not how she actually looks. Also, again, I AM REALLY SORRY FOR THE DELAY. .. . . . .))

"What are you talking about? It's not too short!" Delia laughed. "Ves, Vessie, heck even a simple 'V' could be your nickname. But I guess it's up to you whether any of them are cute or not."

As the girl went on about teas and other human food, Cordelia couldn't help rubbing her eyes and squinting at Vesna some. Was it her or did the girl seem different from how she'd seen her just a few moments prior? Maybe it was the lighting she was in now, but the younger Frei was starting to look an awful lot like herself, but softer and cuter than Cordelia would ever consider herself as. You wanted to talk mysterious, then Vesna would be the one here, not the Basilisk. At the mention of her near death experience, the black Raevan locked her jaw and clenched her fists. Honestly, Delia had been hoping to steer the conversation away from the real matter at hand for as long as possible, but here it was thrust upon her with the cheeriest of dispositions.

The snake frowned as she leaned back, arms crossed in a way where she could still cup her chin in deep thought. What did Cordelia want to do now? There was so much to regret and lament over, but as angry and depressed about certain things as she was still, the dark Frei didn't want to burden this poor innocent girl with her problems even if that's what she'd been sent there to talk about today. So perhaps to help play the part of "mysterious" that the Rusalka thought her to be, Cordelia simply said, "I want to live."

It was a moment or so before she softened her face and gave a smile, albeit a weak one and tried her hand at a jest. "Though I could certainly live without sweets. I'm rather sensitive to certain scents and most desserts tend to give off this sickening smell to me. Perhaps I can blame my soul for that. I like earthy scents the best." She mused a bit, trying to bring some brightness back to her face. "So you know Cesc huh? It's been a loooong time since I've seen him, Vivi and Shepard. It hadn't been too long after Cesc was born, though I wasn't able to talk with him much, he seemed rather kind. But I could never imagine a Raevan of Vivi's not being such. Are they well?" She really couldn't help trying to move the topic in the most opposite direction of what should have been their focus today.

"Vessie is cute!" Vesna said, "You could call me that if you wanted and I wouldn't mind."

She considered Cordelia's very short bucket list. "That's easy then," she decided, "Since we're already living anyway!" She seemed a little more taken aback by the fact that sweets didn't smell good to her new friend. "That sucks!" She sympathized. "If sweets do taste bad after all the effort I put into growing, I'm going to be, like, so mad. I won't know what to do with myself!" The thought seemed to deflate her enthusiasm a little, but she bounced back quickly at the mention of yet another friend. "So you know Cesc, too?" she enthused. "O-M-G, you knew him as a baby?? He's so old now, he's like a sigel with a torso and stuff!" She tried to picture a Cesc that was closer to her age, or, even more mind-bogglingly, closer to Lorin's or Aina's age. "He'd be like a little fawn, huh?" she asked. "Was he cute??"

She stopped the barrage of questions to actually answer some of her own. "Cesc's doing well, I think! I've never met Vivi, but Dad's family knows all of them because of Granny Maplethorpe. Cesc just always seems super nice and grown up, so it's hard for me to picture him as a frei, you know? The first time I met him, we were at this Lab picnic, and it was nice, but all of a sudden, a bunch of birds attacked! And then it turned out that, like, that was just a diversion and someone stole a bunch of fel essences, so Doctor Kyou was like, 'Oh man, you guys gotta go find those fel essences!' and we were like 'Yeah, okay,' and he was on my fel essence hunting team, and we were like partners, like on detective shows or something. But he was like the older, mature partner who knows the ways of the world, and I was like the spunky young loose cannon. And Dad and Claire were there, too."

All this while, Lorenzo had politely listened to the conversation. He had seemed to be about to interject when Cordelia had mentioned what she wanted to do with her life, but her steering the topic away seemed to have silenced him again. The kettle began to whistle, so he poured a cup of black tea for him, white tea for Vesna, and called, "Cordelia, let me know if you'd like to eat. I have some candles and incense around that I can burn if it suits you."

"Thanks Dad!" Vesna called back. Unlike Lorenzo, she seemed to have almost completely forgotten the reason Cordelia had come to visit in the first place.
PostPosted: Tue Feb 14, 2017 10:29 am

"Vessie it is then." Cordelia's genuine laugh, full of mirth and smoke rolled in and it felt good for the Raevan to express it now. The weight of her mental and emotional baggage was not feeling as heavy as it should in the light of this delightful youngster. The snake couldn't help feeling wanting to keep this one as she had with so many others of whom she missed terribly. Maybe she should try to not get any closer to this young Frei? She didn't want to end up missing her the same way one day. But as Vesna spoke, Delia knew she wouldn't be able to resist the girl's charm. Seemed the Basilisk had met her match so to speak.

At hearing of Cesc's current status, Cordelia couldn't help feeling a mixed emotion of happiness and jealousy. She was proud and happy for the stag and his family, but it just made the smokey girl feel somehow inadequate. After all, she was older than Cesc and it almost seemed unfair that he was a Sigel before her. Though she couldn't blame that on him. Obviously her progress had been stunted due to her 'near death experience' as Vessie described it. She had only herself to blame in a sense. Trying to stay positive, Cordelia managed a smile and replied, "Well I can't imagine how he looks now, but I would say he was pretty adorable when I met him. All sunshine and pink with these little deer antlers and ears." Delia used her hands to gesture atop her own head the size of the boy's antlers then and where she remembered his cute little ears being. "Vivi's own pride and joy. Her petit chou."

Delia blushed slight. She'd been so engrossed with conversation with Vesna that she'd all but forgotten that Lorenzo was still there, most likely waiting to actually have their session. She knew she'd been sort of giving him a cold shoulder of sorts, but forgetting him altogether, that was just beyond rude, even for her. "N-no! I'm good, really. Thank you though. Sorry, I know you're being very patient with me. It's hard for me to talk about what happened and I guess I'm just trying to avoid it."

"Little deer antlers..." Vesna mouthed silently, trying to imagine a Cesc who was small and cute. Her expression cracked up as Delia called him a 'petit chou', and she burst into snickers. "I can't even picture it!" she admitted. "But I guess all grown ups were little once." She eyed Lorenzo in a way he didn't quite appreciate- he reminded himself to hide the family picture books the next time he brought her to his parents' house.

Turning his attention to Cordelia, Lorenzo flashed a polite smile. "No worries," he reassured, "It takes time to talk about these things. Many of my clients need time to adjust, and I imagine that you're still adjusting to being back amongst us as well." He set his mug and Vesna's down on the coffee table and sat down again next to Vesna, stirring his tea slightly. "I don't want you to feel pressured to tell me exactly what happened if you don't want to. Think of this as an informal visit- you can get to know Vesna and me, and if you have questions or concerns you feel comfortable asking me about, you can ask me now or contact me later. Our door is always open."

"Yeah," Vesna pitched in, "And if you're depressed or bored or anything, I can lend you some videogames or manga or we can hang out!"

"If you want," Lorenzo offered, "I can at least go over some of the common side effects of an emergency resurrection to cross-check with what you may or may not be experiencing now. I doubt that the symptoms will be quite the same, but if any of them are, I do know a few methods I use to help my clients cope that might be useful for you."

"He tried a lot of them on me when I was born," Vesna elaborated. "They were pretty useless, but some of them were sort of fun."

The snake gave a soft, yet true smile towards the man for possibly the first time since she got there. Despite his youthful looks, Lorenzo was cool, calm, and confident with a bit of an air for proper etiquette. If Ebony were there, Delia couldn't help but think that the Brit would have liked this guardian. That thought was going to cost her a bit, but it was something she couldn't help since her and the younger Frei's humans had a few key similarities. Although Cordelia had to admit that Lorenzo seemed much more laid back than Ebby of whom often had a sharpness to her that couldn't be dulled. The smokey Raevan then thought perhaps the necromancer was more akin to being a younger version of her grandfather instead, gentle and stern.

"Thank you." Cordelia looked between the two of them then. "Both of you. It means a lot, especially considering that we just met and all."

The Basilisk raised a questioning brow when she heard Lorenzo had tried to use some of his methods on Vessie, but were apparently ineffective. Why would he try to use any sort of emergency resurrection whatever tactics on his own ward? Had she died right after emerging from the tanks?! The idea that this man was indeed a necromancer was finally sinking in and Delia couldn't help having a bit of nervousness in her voice when she spoke. "W-what do you mean, he tried them on you? You didn't...you weren't..." Covering her mouth in embarrassment, the black Frei couldn't quite finish that sentence. How does one ask another about the status of their own mortality? It seemed rather private if not a bit morbid and uncouth.

Vesna and Lorenzo both seemed confused at first, but rapidly reached the same conclusion when they saw the look on Cordelia's face.

"Nononono!" said Vesna, waving her hands frantically, while Lorenzo burst into a nervous cough. "Nooo, he didn't do any, like, creepy magic stuff to me. Well, he did make me sign a contract, but that's because I'm his client... Um, well, sort of." She looked to Lorenzo for help.

"Vesna's soul is the soul of one of my former clients," Lorenzo cut in, having collected himself sufficiently to continue. "The exercises I had her try when she was born aren't necessarily what I'd prescribe to you, they were more exercises to test her mental and physical dexterity. People who come back from the dead, ah, traditionally, often start out having difficulty performing basic functions. That's one of the reasons why, in movies, stereotypical portrayals of undead people tend to involve so much groaning and walking with arms outstretched. When I tested Vesna, I was trying to see whether she had inherited any issues from her undead soul that we would need to address."

"And I was super good at all the exercises," Vesna explained proudly. "So maybe they'd be fun if you were really undead, but for me they were just kind of repetitive."

"Since you've never actually been resurrected, I would recommend a few of the exercises for mental stress or for coping with a near death experience," Lorenzo explained to Cordelia. "Many people who experience an emergency resurrection experience anxiety afterwards about doing things which might be associated with whatever killed them, even if it was just a freak accident. So necromancers sometimes help ease them back into their normal lives."

Oh, so she had got it completely wrong. How embarrassing. Good thing Cordelia's cheeks couldn't enflame anymore than they were now which was only a mere dusting of blush. She had a feeling that Vesna would say she was utterly adorable or something, and for whatever reasons Delia wanted the younger girl to keep thinking she was cool and mysterious. Seemed the snake did have an ego that needed to be stroked every now and then.

Giving an awkward smile, "Sorry, guess I got this weird idea in my head about necromancers when you said that. Books and movies getting things wrong or blowing certain aspects out of proportion probably doesn't make your job any easier, huh Lorenzo?" As creepy or badass as those things made necromancers out to be, Cordelia sort of liked how things seemed to really be with Vessie's guardian. He was more like a doctor to the undead, treating them with respect and great care. So maybe it was okay to confide in him, if only just a little.

"Technically I have died before and was resurrected. I mean, all Raevans have, if you think about it." Delia's face became a mask of seriousness that was trying to not only hold back all her mixed emotions, but also understand them. "Maybe resurrection is the wrong word, more like we were reincarnated since most of us don't seem to remember our past lives."

The snake took a small breath then before continuing. "Before I turned to stone, I'd found out about how my guardian obtained my soul. It was...surprising and unpleasant to say the least. I was extremely angry at my guardian for keeping it from me, still am actually, and I think it's what made me sick. I don't really remember any of what happened while I was stone. Only the vagueness of voices talking and me not feeling...whole?" Cordelia shook her head. It was hard to put simple words to some of the things she was trying to express. She wasn't sure if any human or even any other Raevan could understand what exactly she'd gone through.

The smokey girl sighed, "Anyway, Zeke said I seemed fine physically for the most part. But I do still have issues, like how I tire very easily. I also get random fevers every now and then. When that happens I can't keep my form solid very well." Delia gave a quick demonstration by allowing one of her arms to melt to pure smoke before solidifying it again. "It takes a lot more effort than normal to maintain my form and only adds to my tiredness problem. But I guess it's good I have more control over my smoke abilities than I use to." She gave a small laugh then, "But you could be right about me having mental stress. Could that explain the fevers? I'm not really sure what kind of things to look for in regards to that, but if you think your exercises would help, then I don't see the harm in trying."

"It's a problem I'm used to dealing with," Lorenzo said, giving Cordelia a wan smile. "There were certainly some necromancers like you see in movies and such back in the bad old days, but now we have a licensing system and everything. Think of me more as a magical medical professional. A post-life specialist, maybe?"

Vesna rolled her eyes. "Oh my god, Dad," she said, but she hushed up once Cordelia began to sort things through.

Lorenzo nodded thoughtfully. "To make a raevan requires the soul of a living thing- that's a heavy cost by any standard, and even in the best situation it's an emotional sacrifice to say the least. It's understandable that the details of your guardian's soul capture could upset you, but I can also see your guardian wishing to spare you the details." He remembered Vesna's soul capture vividly- and though, he had told Vesna the gist of what had happened back then, there were details he kept to himself simply out of concern that they would cause her distress.

He stroked his chin. "It could be that sense of betrayal which caused you to go into some kind of shock. Emotional stress can have physical consequences, after all. We don't have to talk about it in depth, if it makes you feel uncomfortable, but one exercise that could be useful right now is a sort of reframing exercise. Since your situation is unique, it's not exactly standard procedure, but let me ask you this: How did you imagine your guardian capturing your soul ideally?"
