Sylviaâs immediate response when Brian told her that the alligator (or crocodile) that he had saved was still at camp was to request that he show her the thing. She wondered if it still had the scarf he mentioned tied around its maw⌠She could understand if it did, though she was also worried about it being able to eat or drink or⌠whatever it needed to do. Hopefully once they were done carrying it and left it in the makeshift âholding areaâ it hadnât needed the scarfâŚ
It hadnât taken them very long to get back to camp. Soon enough, the fanged deer was with the other animals and Sylvia was leaning her shield against the inn before she found Brian again and nudged his side. âSo,â she squinted at him with a playful smile, âwhereâs this alligator, crocodile, whichever, of yours?â She glanced at the gathered animals, but waited for Brian to point out the particular beast in question before fully assessing the group.

Brian hadn't gone far. He hadn't exactly expected Sylvia to return but there was only so far to go. He smiled slightly when she approached again. He had only just taken his bow from his shoulder and settled back.
"Oh, it's over there--" he said and pointed in the direction that the gator had been dropped-off. He didn't see it immediately. The bright color of Lex's scarf was absent. "Oh, looks like it got out." It was impossible to tell whether someone had let it go or it had gotten out of its scarf-tie. He shuddered. If it had wriggled free just a few minutes too soon... Ugh.
At least the creature was away from the other animals it may very well eat. Everything that had been captured seemed to be pleased to be back at camp, but animal instincts still existed. He had seen a lion swat at a pheasant, after all.
"Do you know if it's a gator or a croc? I have no idea how to tell." (181)

Sylvia gazed in the direction that he pointed. It took her a moment to find the animal, but once she did, she noticed that it did not have a scarf across its jaws. Her lips drew back in a slightly worried expression when Brian commented that it must have gotten out of the tie somehow, though she had just been wondering if it should still have its mouth tied. At least it could eat, if needed â she just hoped it was aware enough to not eat any of the other animals in its enclosure. In theory it was a person underneath, but they had all seen how the animal instincts had taken over before.
Sylvia frowned a bit at Brianâs question, a light shake of her head following. âI know that one is supposed to life in salt water and one is supposed to live in fresh water â right?â Even that fact she was a little iffy on. She seemed to remember that as a distinction, but she hadnât exactly read up on their differences lately. âI think thereâs also a way to tell them apart by⌠the shape of their nose?â She hummed, âBut I canât remember which is which, so that isnât very helpful,â she chuckled a bit, a little sorry to have mentioned it if she couldnât even use the information. Another sigh, âIâd bet one is even typically bigger than the other, but again, I donât know for sure, and itâs not as if we have two of them to compareâŚâ Sylvia shrugged, but her eyes brightened as she looked over at her companion again, âWe could probably look it up when we get back! Though,â she tilted her head and rolled her eyes at herself, âthat still doesnât help us now.â She laughed and gave Brian a sorry smile, âIâm not very helpful, am I?â
She turned to the animals again and nodded, âGood job, anyway! He â or she â is pretty big. I can imagine it wasnât fun to carry it here if it was being feisty, even with its mouth tied shut.â

Brian wasn't sure whether Sylvia was a nervous talker or just a general talker. The former assumed that she was nervous now, and although something like it had crossed her face he wasn't convinced that she was frightened. She had been calm during the battle anyway, and if a person was going to panic they were liable to do it while the fanged deer was lunging at them. He chuckled regardless and shook his head.
"I have no idea. I'd swear it was something about where the eyes were, but I really have no idea. I'm not even sure where I heard it." It had been a while since he had been in school, and he did not regularly discuss alligators with his friends. "I'm not sure it matters. Maybe for curiosity's sake, but it's a big scaly thing that'll eat everyone else if we let it." He paused. "Well. It's a person... but you know what I mean."
His eyes scanned the bizarre scenery and all of its colorful fauna, and then turned back to Sylvia. "You've brought something back too, right? Where is it?" He had forgotten exactly what it had been. Going out and saving people was his focus lately, but he could really use a break. (403)

Sylvia shrugged. She wasnât sure where she had heard any of her theories either, but she seemed to remember them as various tidbits somewhere in her life. Then again, if she didnât remember the source, she probably couldnât trust them too much â she might have heard them from people who were as unsure as they were â or sure of themselves for no reason. Well, whatever. Brian was right, it hardly mattered in the long run. She nodded at his clarification, an amused smile crossing her lips, âI do know what you mean.â
As he turned to her and asked after her own victories, she grinned and pointed to a large, grey body at the other side of the group, âThat one. The elephant seal.â She wiggled her shoulders a bit, rather proud of their accomplishment. âErnst, Mathilda, and I brought him back not too long ago. Or, her. Either way,â she extended an open hand towards the seal, showing it off again and making a pleased little sound in her throat.
âOther than that one and the deer, though, I havenât brought back many. Beth, Misha, and I went to find Tom and brought him back, but thatâs about it so far.â She sighed a little, but was still quite pleased, a smile staying on her lips as she watched the animals. After a moment, she turned to Brian again, âIs the croco-gator your only catch? You seemed pretty savvy with the deerâŚâ she trailed off, implying that it would seem heâd had some practice earlier. There was quite an assembly gathered, and she could imagine him bringing a few others back. She would love to have a running list at some point, see how well everyone had done, but it was unlikely anyone had kept such a list.

"Oh nice," Brian said, turning toward the lumpy grey animal and nodding. That was quite the schnozz, wasn't it? Hopefully whoever it turned out to be wasn't especially vain. Did the personality within have any bearing on the animal a person turned into? He was beginning to wonder.
"How did you even get that back? Was it in the woods?" It was hard to imagine something that big and floppy navigating between the trees. He turned back to her when she mentioned Tom. She knew him by name, so he must have been a Chosen and, guessing from the whole 'brought him back' statement that he had been turned. "What was he?"
He turned back to the animals as if it would somehow refresh his memory. Actually, it sort of did. it made him feel accomplished, as a part of a group who had brought so many critters back. Hopefully none of the potentially native species (not that he knew exactly what that entailed) were only masquerading as people.
"Oh, um. Misha, she was a big cat-- you know that if she went with you-- the 'croco-gator,' an eel, and the deer. I plan to go out and get more if I can. We'll see. I'm probably more use here than out investigating." (630)

Sylvia smiled and nodded as Brian seemed to size up the seal across the way. It was a good catch, though there were many of those. âHe was waddling around the swamp, apparently trying to sun himself when Ernst found him. He managed to follow us, after a bit of rest. I think he was as tired as we were by the end â didnât want to fight anymore â so we did okay just bringing him along.â Mathilda had fawned over him the entire time, encouraged him to keep up with the group. It was pretty cute, actually, and not at all what Sylvia had imagined from Mathilda.
She turned to face Brian as well, âOh, heâs an owl of some kind. He has sort of fluffy ears â pretty cute, actually.â She smiled remembering his tufts. She hadnât seen him since the fight, and gave camp a quick scan to see if he was readily available to point out. Unfortunately, he seemed to be hiding or out.
It was interesting to hear which animals Brian had helped bring back. She wondered if he had known Misha before going to find her â she seemed to remember a few people following after friends when they had changed, and wouldnât be surprised if Brian had been one of them, though she couldnât remember. As if the croco-gator wasnât impressive enough, Sylviaâs eyes widened as he mentioned an eel. She was stunned for a moment, and it took a second or two of silence after Brian had finished his sentence before she was able to respond.
âYou brought back an eel?â It probably wasnât an electric eel, but even so. How did one fight an eel? Moreover, âHow did you get that back to camp?â Depending on the size, of course, they could have found some way to transport it. Had they found a bucket left behind somewhere? All Sylvia had seen was water bottles and various supplies, but she had never been looking with the idea of carrying an eel back to camp in mind.

Brian smiled. That was a cute mental image. The animals did all seem to give in some period of time and just allow themselves to be taken. He wondered how it was for the turned townsfolk? He doubted that they knew who the Chosen were or that they were here to help them. Turning into n animal had to be pretty shocking.
"Oh? So how many's that now?" he asked, but of course nobody could know for sure. He nodded then when Sylvia asked about the eel. yup. An eel. He'd been pretty surprised too.
"It wasn't far from camp, but we moved it to that pond over there," Brian said and gestured toward the treeline. There were a few aquatic or semi-aquatic animals hanging around it. "It must have been freshwater, because the last time I checked it was still alright. I'm pretty sure it gave in after Beth kicked it. It didn't try to bite us at least." (800)

Sylviaâs head tilted slightly as she at least ran through the turned Chosen she knew of. âWell, our leaders â five â and the raccoon⌠then Misha, Tom, and Sid turned as well, so thatâs nineâŚâ She hummed, then turned to Brian with a bit of a squint, âI think that a few others may have turned since then, but I donât really⌠know who, or how manyâŚâ She shook her head a bit and glanced back at the group, âItâs weird to think we could all change eventuallyâŚâ It was more to herself than anything, under her breath, but still audible to Brian, she was sure â and she disliked that sheâd said it. It didnât help to mention such things; they were all very aware of the situation. She shook her head and tried to dismiss the thought as best she could, hoping inwardly that Brian would forgive her for the shift in mood.
Sylvia looked over at the pond with a surprised smile. She honestly hadnât realized that there were aquatic animals out there to be caught â it hadnât occurred to her, really, despite Chris turning into an alligator (or was it a crocodile?). She wondered how those who turned and needed water had found it â were they just in the right place at the right time? If so, had they turned into something aquatic because they were near/in the water? All of a sudden she had so many questions⌠But none of them were anything she or Brian could answer. So, she smiled and gave Brian an impressed nod. âWell, then. Nicely done.â
Sylvia almost made another comment that she wouldnât have approved of. She wondered, vaguely, and almost aloud, how many others were still out there. There was an entire town nearby that was apparently mostly abandoned thanks to the witchâs epidemic. Her eyes stopped focusing for a moment while she thought about it, but she blinked to bring herself back. If she thought about it too much, she wasnât sure where exactly it would lead, but she didnât want to drift off when she was in the middle of a conversation with someone anyway.

"Yeah, me neither." They knew of nine, though. That was better than not knowing about any at all. Hopefully some of these animals roaming around the camp were actually townsfolk too. It was hard to tell. The Chosen didn't have a common garment among them this time. "There were eight Chosen sent initially, Griffin said. So fifteen, if Arthur is any indicator."
"Did you eat it...?" he asked cautiously. They had pretty much all agreed that it was the food and drink in the town (and in the first turned Chosen's possessions) that had been causing the transformations. He had only had a little, but he worried too that he might end up turning.
The compliment that came then seemed as if it had occurred in place of something else. He offered a little smile. "You too."
Then Sylvia drifted off. She got that look on her face that Beth got just before she opened up about something that was bothering her. His brow furrowed slightly. Was Sylvia okay? ...was anyone really okay right now? He offered her a little smile. What could he even say?
"So how did your Aphrodite choose you?" It was something he was honestly curious about, something he had never asked anyone before and, most importantly, something entirely unrelated to people turning into animals. Hopefully.

Sylviaâs brows raised, âYeah, thatâs true. I wonder if weâve found all of them yet.â She had been aware of them all missing, of course, but she hadnât thought actively about them in a while. Possibly because there was no way to know which of the animals was a Chosen from the former group, and which were townspeople. Unless Arthur had seen what his colleagues turned into, but she hadnât had much interaction with the little guy.
Sylvia grimaced a bit and sighed at Brianâs question, âWe almost all did. None of us knew what was happening before that night.â Her mouth quirked to one side as she considered how much to tell Brian, but inwardly shrugged and continued, âMy stomach couldnât handle it once people started turning, though â not sure if it was some sort of instinct or if it was just⌠shock.â Another sigh. Sylvia shook her head, âBut really, Iâm not sure if it was just that. I had some water and a drink in town â I think everyone had water once we got here, itâs too hot not to. We were here for almost a day; who knows what else people ate or drank⌠I feel like just being here for half a day, enough for people to get peckish or thirsty, would be dangerous.â If it was the food. Historically, or mythically, Circe had used food, but Sylvia couldnât help but wonder if sheâd found another way somehow since.
Sylvia appreciated Brianâs return compliment, and gave a small, grateful nod. He was perceptive when she drifted into thought, though. When she blinked back, she noticed his brows were a little furrowed, and he was offering a small smile as she re-focused. She laughed a bit gruffly and shook her head, âSorry about that. Chased a thought for a moment.â She waved it away with her hand, choosing to stick with the decision not to share. Perhaps if it somehow came up again she would divulge, but for now she didnât want to add a heavy tone to a basically introductory conversation.
Sylviaâs eyes brightened a bit when Brian asked about how Aphrodite chose her. She hadnât talked to anyone about it yet, and hadnât asked anyone either. She had sort of considered it a personal question, one she wouldnât ask people right off, despite the fact that it was one of the (probably) few things they all had in common â being chosen, at least, not necessarily the method their god/dess employed to get their attention. She didnât mind that Brian was asking, though. She was fascinated that heâd asked, and she was almost a little excited to finally talk about it with someone. After all, she hadnât been able to discuss it with anyone at home.
âI was in the bath, actually.â A sheepish sort of smile. âI take a bubble bath every Friday, and I had just settled in. I had some wine leftover from dinner with me, so at first I wondered if it was much stronger than I thought.â She chuckled remembering it. She hummed slightly, trying to remember what exactly Aphrodite had said. âAnyway, she sort of showed up in my bubbles, assured me that I wasnât hallucinating, and then said that if I accepted her blessing, someone would come to me; and if I said yes, I would âembark on a journeyâ and âwelcome magic into my lifeâ.â Sylvia smiled a bit, shaking her head slightly and shrugging, âWho could say no to that? If it was a hallucination, what was the harm? And if it wasnât⌠well⌠who hasnât wanted a little magic in their life at one time or another?â She might have also been yearning for adventure, but even she hadnât fully realized that yet.
Sylvia lifted up on her tiptoes for a moment, then glanced back at Brian as she settled back onto her feet fully, âHow about you?â She was still a little self-conscious about her story, though she wasnât sure why. She was talking to someone who would clearly understand what she was saying. Hopefully his own story would settle her nerves a bit.

Brian raised a hand and waved it dismissively, still smiling. Whatever thought she had had, he wasn't expecting her to share it. They barely knew each other, after all! It was entirely fine that she had drifted off. He knew he tended toward the Silent Type side of social gatherings himself.
He let the conversation about eating and drinking disappear. He had been drinking water before he'd taken that one spoonful of soup. It was probably enough. He hadn't even seen Misha take a bite, and she had turned right away! In that way, he was even more prone than she was. Of course, he too had stopped eating. More accurately, he had tossed his bowl to the ground and run off after Misha. Hopefully it hadn't hit anyone.
He listened to Sylvia describe her Choosing (or whatever it was called) and nodded. He hadn't been expecting a chat about her weekly baths, but hey, it was just information. Every bit of information led to a fuller picture of a person, especially the personal parts.
Oh, so she had actually seen Aphrodite?! He hadn't seen Zeus, and as such his mental image of the God was a large, white-bearded man armed with lightning bolts.
"Oh, uh... well." He shook his head and laughed softly. He hadn't shared this with anyone. He was pretty sure they'd tease him about its... uniqueness, but not people were turning into animals, so who knew? "I had pulled a woman over for speeding, and I was talking to her, and then her dog started talking." He paused briefly, catching himself gesturing to the imaginary front seat and back seat that existed in front of him. He dropped his pointing finger. "It was a pit, a grey one with a white chest and pointed ears, I remember it so specifically... and it told me I should accept its offer, someone would be coming for me, there would be magic in my life, etcetera etcetera. I thought I was probably insane? The woman driving obviously didn't know what was going on. It seemed like a good offer, though, right? So I accepted, and then I went about my day, and one day Griffin came so I didn't have to check myself into the loony bin." He shrugged and offered a sideways smile to Sylvia. There it was!

Brian seemed nervous. Sylviaâs mouth tightened to one side as she almost felt bad for asking, but she didnât think it was out of the norm to counter such a question with âand you?â That was her usual response, at least, when sharing stories â which was essentially what theyâd been doing since returning with the fanged deer. Luckily, he seemed to get past it and continued with his own story.
It seemed so fitting that he was a cop. Of course he was good under pressure, and steady when facing a challenge, brave and courageous. It clicked. A little smile grew on her lips watching Brian catch himself gesturing around the imaginary car. A small, amused snort when he said he thought he was insane at first â she really couldnât blame him. She wasnât sure if it was better or worse that she had seen Aphrodite in bubbles, rather than seen (or imagined?) an animal talking to her. Both were worrisome in any other situation. She nodded, having obviously agreed to her own âgood offer,â and chuckled at the end of his story.
âIt was definitely a relief when Brynn showed up and explained everything. Well, most everything.â Some things had to wait until she got to the Prytaneum, but the most important part, the âyouâre not insaneâ part, was at least covered. Sylvia squinted a bit as she considered the differences in their stories, âSuch a different approach. I wonder if each God has a specific style to their offers⌠Or if they adjust it to their subject.â Sylvia frowned a bit and shrugged; she really couldnât venture a guess. She only had their stories, now, to compare.
Sylvia looked around at the situation they were now in and sighed. âI wonder if I would make the same choice if I knew what was coming.â Sheâd really had no clue what to expect from what she thought was a hallucination. Brynn was almost a welcome surprise, and the first impression of the Prytaneum had been great. But she had been so⌠blind-sided by the fact that they would have to fight monsters. And when it came to actually fighting them, in the Alps, sheâd been absolutely terrified, and she knew that sheâd returned from that mission in a bit of shock. But the wind-down after had given her some time to think, once she chose to stop distracting herself. And this journey, at least, seemed a bit easier to handle â she could wrap her brain around it a bit more easily, despite the fact that it was still an insane situation. Still, even now she wasnât sure she knew enough about what was to come to gauge her past decision. Based on just these two missions, she figured that past her probably would have been too scared or intimidated to say yes. That was probably why they left the details out of the initial invitationâŚ

"Well, I don't know a whole lot about Greek myths, I'll admit that, but I do know that Zeus liked--likes?" He shook his head. "Appearing as animals and gettin' jiggy is sort of in his repertoire. I avoided the last part at least." Zeus also preferred ladies as far as he knew. He wasn't sure he could have taken on that pit bull without deadly force, and that wouldn't look all that great in the papers. No, he didn't even want to think about it. That part of his life was over anyway.
"I sort of thought my life would keep on like it was. I had to make excuses to keep my job after those first couple weeks." That aside, though, would he have taken the deal? If he had known that he was going to be fighting monsters and being involved in the death of civilians? It wasn't all too different from the norm if a person was hopped up on the right things, plus he had to deal with violence far less regularly than before even if it was a bit more... violent. "I guess there's no point in wondering, really. I don't think this is the kind of thing you can back out of."
He surveyed the landscape and let silence fall for a few moments. Man, this really was pretty insane, wasn't it? It was all insane. It also happened to be real, somehow.

Sylvia laughed at Brianâs comment on Zeusâs exploits. She probably remembered even less than Brian did, but she was fairly sure everyone knew how much Zeus âgot aroundâ. Lucky he avoided that, indeed, though she wasnât sure Brian was Zeusâs type. Who knew, though â these days, anything was possible.
She gave a nod. She hadnât had a clue about what would happen, but she hadnât expected that she would possibly be living part-time on the Prytaneum grounds rather than at home, and she definitely didnât expect that she would have to be on-call to save the world every couple of weeks. âIâve been able to put in some âvacationâ time and do some work on the phone, but itâs not a long-term solution. I still have to figure some things outâŚâ She had been debating how best to keep her career on track while also figuring out what her new life entailed; she wasnât entirely ready to give up on the life sheâd built for herself before Aphroditeâs visit. âI imagine itâs a bit harder to work around as a cop?â She didnât know much about the profession, but it seemed like the sort of job that didnât allow for a lot of time off.
She gave a slight chuckle, tilting her head a bit. âProbably so.â Sylvia shrugged. Even if it was an option to back out, she wouldnât have. She was the sort of person who stuck with something once she made a decision, so for better or for worse, she was in this. It didnât do well to wonder what she would have done with all of the information before.
The silence that fell wasnât uncomfortable. There was something shared in it, maybe just an understanding of what they were really in for. After a moment, Sylvia smiled over at Brian and said, âWell. I think weâre doing pretty alright, all things considered.â
