When she had been dismissed from her branch, Cinnabar had been furious, and rightly so, she thought. She had done little more than ask questions, really, while the rest seemed to take her lead and stood up to speak out themselves. She had been proud of the support, even if it had led to banishment for the lot of them. She could have accepted that she'd been in the wrong, even, as she had a history of rash actions, but when so many had stood beside her... how could they be the ones in the wrong?

But then, how could Generals stand against a General Queen? The only recourse had been to go above her head, to someone with a cooler, more logical thought process and the experience with Cinnabar and her fellows to have a better view on the problem.

Laurelite, their Queen, would surely side with them. She knew her generals, she knew how they worked and what good soldiers they were. It was Cinnabar's hope that she could smooth everything over, because when it came down to it, she had been hoping for a true leader for her branch. Someone she trusted and be proud to follow. She wanted that... not someone who treated her like a misbehaving child.

Getting an audience with the Queen after her coronation had been difficult, but she had persisted and finally managed it. Restless fingers tugged her heavy leather coat straight, echoing in the swish of her tail back and forth behind her. General Cinnabar refused to call it nerves. What did she have to be nervous about? She was a decorated officer, Laurelite's own holding pride of place on the breast of her coat next to her award for energy collection and the defender of the Negaverse medal.

She took a deep breath, ran her hands through her hair to settle it, and knocked on the door to the Queen's meeting room. She would straighten this out and everything would be back to normal, she was sure of it.

Laurelite did not like to spend time in the meeting room. She found it disruptive to her duties which, despite her promotion, she still liked to tend to in the privacy of her own office. Being Queen meant that she had a new set of duties, though. Some of which were best conducted in a meeting hall.

“Enter,” she commanded, already knowing who stood behind that door.

Laurelite liked Cinnabar, and were she not so burdened with her new workload, she would have readily accepted a meeting with her. Though she did not entirely know what this meeting would entail, she thought she had a bit of an idea.

She was ready to see the General, though.

Laurelite sat in a chair that, despite her power, made her look smaller. She had some papers carefully hidden behind her, as though she had intended to sneak in some extra work between meetings.

Her fingers were laced before her and she seemed calmed and prepared. Her smile, ever present, greeted Cinnabar.

Pointed ears caught the smooth voice from beyond the door and Cinnabar pushed it open, trying not to appear too eager.

She had never actually had a one-on-one meeting with Laurelite before, she realized. Always, it had been part of a group, or with someone else, even if she might have gotten the lion's share of the attention. Never like this, just the two of them, with no emergency to be handled and no promotion to be had. But then, she had never been one to seek out authority. She followed the orders laid out for all of them and took initiative, organizing her own work with ambition and dedication. She felt entirely out of her element, coming here like this.

"Majesty." She greeted the small woman in the chair, striding forward in her tall boots to bow before her. Once more, she found herself uncertain how one was supposed to greet a Queen, but it seemed right.

"Thank you for agreeing to meet with me." The half-youma said as she straightened up, her tail flicking. "I know your duties keep you busy, but I couldn't think of anyone else that I could bring this particular, sensitive matter to. You are in a very unique position, I'm afraid."

Was that too informal? Too presumptuous? The downside of never having Laurelite one on one also meant she had no idea how she reacted to think, so how casual she cared to have her meetings. Cinnabar pushed down the unusual worry, her brows drawn together at the uncharacteristic feelings.

“That I am,” Laurelite agreed. “But I welcome all matters, sensitive or otherwise. I appreciate good company, regardless of the circumstances.”

She seemed to sense something of Cinnabar’s emotional plight and offered a reassuring smile. “Please, speak freely. You are among my most favored Generals, and I am happy to have you here. If something worries you, I would like to know. Would some tea ease you?” she asked; she gestured to a nearby table.

A pot and two mugs sat alone on the table, and Laurelite rose as if she intended to serve the both of them. She lingered only for confirmation from the General and seemed prepared for either a yes or no.

There was something... informal about the way Laurelite spoke to her, but she reminded herself of the gap in their ranks. This wasn't a social call, she needed to stay on track even if the Queen was willing to ease her stance. It was her right to do so, after all. Red eyes flicked to the tea and she shook her head slowly.

"Thank you, but no, my Queen." She said, tucking her arms behind her back to grip one wrist in the other. It helped her stand up straighter as she sorted out her thoughts. There was really no good way to broach this subject.

"I am worried, actually, and that is why I came to you. You've likely heard by now of an unfortunate incident during the Special Operations meeting. I wanted to bring my side of this conflict to you and formally express my reservations about General Queen Hessonite. I feel that perhaps there was a... misunderstanding and she came into this branch with a different idea of the soldiers she would be working with, and it lead to more misunderstanding between us and her."

Taking what she really wanted to say and forming it into this... polite and bland account was difficult and almost painful for Cinnabar, who was used to being straightforward and, often, less than polite. But... to say straight out that she thought Hessonite was a pompous b***h who had no ******** clue what she was doing seemed like the wrong way to speak to the Queen.

"She ordered us to investigate our own people, suspected of disloyalty or not, and I expressed that I disagree with such... ham-handed tactics. Trust is what makes a solid and cohesive team, your majesty, and it promotes loyalty to each other and to the Negaverse. Casting doubt on loyal soldiers, in my opinion, will not get the results she wants... it will only sew more doubt in our ranks and crumble the bonds we have been working so hard to forge. Loyalty is what will keep our people from seeking purification... but she took my dissatisfaction as a challenge, along with that of my peers. She's all but gutted the Special Operations by dismissing all of us from their ranks... and that, I feel, is a weakness the Negaverse can't afford right now."

The tea was apparently forgotten; Laurelite's attention remained focused on Cinnabar.

"I did hear of such an incident," she affirmed, a bit more serious now than before. "And while I would be in agreement that perhaps there was some misunderstanding, let us also remember it was Metallia who hand selected her, of all General Sovereigns, to join us in Destiny City."

She watched Cinnabar closely, reading what she could from her body language and expression.

"While I understand there were several units that disagreed, I was a bit surprised when I read the full report. I wonder, though, if my reports are correct? Several of our Agents--Generals, no less--decided to butt heads with a General Sovereign, in an exceptionally public venue? I admit, I am disappointed that we lost some of our finest Officers in the Special Operatives Branch, but since you've brought the topic up..."

Laurelite paused, and though she retained a professional air about her, it was clear that this conversation was dipping into something more.

"May I ask why you permitted such insubordination? I have always put my faith in you, Cinnabar. You have always shown a great deal of promise. I have admired you and respect you greatly. When I heard of your involvement, I thought there must have been some mistake. Unfortunately, despite whatever disagreements you may have with our new General Queen, I cannot help but think the situation could have been handled to a much different degree. I wonder, did anyone attempt to understand where she was coming from, or were you all keen to challenge her? I must stress, Metallia hand picked her. To question this decision, well..."

She could let Cinnabar imagine. "...She was not happy with any of you. Metallia took it as a personal insult. Of course, I was able to calm her." She waved her hand dismissively, but it was clear that she considered the act a tedious one. "...What would you have me do, though?" she prompted, suddenly. "You disagree with Hessonite, and dislike her, I can see. But what would you have me do of it? Remove her from her post? As much as I'd have loved to promote from within, some of my finest officers in the Branch were removed. And for such public insubordination. How then, can I reward any of these officers? Only one has made any effort to amend the situation. The other seem complacent in their dismissal. Even when, to my knowledge, Hessonite was prepared to hold a private audience to discuss grievances and suggestions? Cinnabar," she sounded tired, exasperated.

"You had a prime opportunity to guide her in her transition into Destiny City and I cannot help but feel as though it was wasted. Hessonite is new, from a different world than our own. She is used to a different breed of agent. I take pride in Destiny City. Regardless of where I was stationed before, Destiny City is my home. I love this city, and every agent stationed here is family to me. Do not think I was impressed with Metallia's decision. I strongly encouraged her to consider promotion, but we have lost her favor, after the invasion. We must earn it again. If these new General Sovereigns can gain us some ground," she shrugged. "We have no choice but to work with them. Hessonite, though, was prime for an alliance. Any General could have spoken with her to discuss concerns after the meeting. Anyone could have offered private suggestions, and attempted to help her settle in. I have no doubt that a conversation with intent to help her understand who we are and how to work with us would have been received so much better than public humiliation."

Laurelite's voice, intentional or otherwise, had gotten colder.

"And yet, now you seek a private audience with me to discuss your concerns. Why did you not do this with her, after the last meeting, instead of feed into the poison of dissent? To encourage it?"

The confidence she had felt walking into this room, certain of her reception and the agreement of the one superior officer she still trusted... crumbled slowly as Laurelite spoke. The hopeful expression on her face chilled and her features smoothed out, hardening to blankness.

Why did you permit such subordination? What would you have me do? Cinnabar twitched, her tail giving a little little flick behind her legs to betray her agitation despite every effort to quell it. She realized she was on shakey ground, suddenly, uncertain how she had gotten there, but... unable to see any way out of it.

"I am a... passionate person..." She started out, her voice more hesitant than she would have liked. "I... may have let my irritation show more than was... respectful. But I tried. I walked in there, eager to have a strong head of my branch, and all I got was..."

The general waved a hand as her face twisted, her tail lashing.

"A general-queen who treated loyal, decorated soldiers like children... Who wants to foster a culture of distrust and back-stabbing in the ranks. A general-queen who sneered at Lieutenants being included in a branch meeting and then put them in danger by demanding another pull their starseeds... for what purpose? To prove their loyalty?" Her lips curled in a snarl of distaste. "You could have done that with an old woman, or a child, or something that would evoke more feeling then a fellow officer they barely knew... and it wouldn't have risked killing one of our own when an inexperienced hand yanked their starseed. Violane was barely weeks old when I took her to that meeting... that level of disregard for her safety or wellbeing could have utterly destroyed any trust she had in us, in Metallia's cause. It might still turn out that she is less loyal, less confident, than she would have been otherwise... I've had to completely start over in both lieutenant's training, re-earning that trust and loyalty that was so hard to come by..."

Cinnabar strode forward, spreading her hands out as she stopped out of arm's range, still respectful of her Queen even as her affront bubbled up.

"I was hoping you would talk to her! I don't think she'll listen to me, not after that meeting..." The thought of going to Hessonite... bowing before her, apologizing for what she felt no shame for, begging to be allowed to stand beneath her again while she smile that smug little smile... it made her skin crawl. "Show her we are loyal soldiers! You've seen our devotion... and she would listen to you! There has to be some sort of compromise that can be reached that doesn't involve... crawling on our knees like... dogs to lick her boots."

Her hands flexed and she reached to jerk her sleeve back, displaying the scales that ran down her arm as her black-red eyes flashed.

"I have given up everything for the Negaverse. I sacrificed my humanity so that I could serve our Queen's cause. Don't I deserve to be treated as my rank, the rank I earned, deserves?" There was a note of pleading to her voice and she scowled as she heard it, clenching her hands as she dropped them and drew back.

"Please, Majesty..."

Laurelite blinked, perhaps a bit surprised. “Cinnabar,” she said suddenly, “I would ask the same question of her--does she not deserve to be treated as her rank?”

It was a simple question, and she looked into the General’s eyes imploringly. “There were a number of Generals who seem to have forgotten that rank meant anything. I understand disagreeing with her practices but Cinnabar, my dear--you cannot come in here and ask me to ensure you are treated at the rank you deserve when you failed to do the same. I cannot show Hessonite that you are loyal soldiers when you rise against her.”

There was a sort of sympathy in Laurelite’s voice, but she was not fully on the General’s side and there were things Laurelite clearly held her accountable for.

“Do not mistake my words though, I have spoken with Hessonite.”

She eyed the woman’s scales, her tail. Her partial youmafication.

Laurelite knew that Cinnabar had made sacrifices, and she had always respected her for it. In a way, Laurelite found herself favoring the general, keeping a closer eye on her.

“...But I think an apology is still in order. I think, if you speak to her, she might be more willing to discuss the matter in her own words. It is not ‘crawling on your knees’. It is being diplomatic. If need be, I will schedule a meeting for both of you. It will be a discussion, between two of Metallia’s favored. Decline, if you will, but perhaps your heart would rest easier if you had an opportunity to discuss her methods.”

She shrugged, still standing up straight. She was not relaxed but neither was she hostile; Laurelite still managed to look polite and nonthreatening.

“There was a plan,” she assured, wondering if it would mean more to hear it from her instead of Hessonite. “I am sorry for the difficulties you faced with retraining your lieutenants. I heard they both performed admirably. I do not disagree with the idea of reserving Special Operatives to agents who have had time to acclimate themselves to our organization. We ask a lot of our Special Operatives Officers. Sometimes, too much for a Lieutenant. Her demonstration was unorthodox, but I have been assured that the point was made and does not need to be repeated.”

She sighed. “But, if we are to talk of ‘fostering a culture of distrust and back-stabbing in the ranks’...Cinnabar, what do you think dissenting Generals have done? I daresay, I think the Generals that acted out did more damage than she did. Imagine--Captains, Lieutenants. People who have known you and look up to you for guidance. People who model their behavior after yours. You did not grant her any trust. Should I be surprised if there is an attempt on her life at the hands of some of you? Shall I expect to hear some news of an ambush gone wrong, of one of you finding her mutilated corpse? Or can I expect that we can settle our differences like adults and do our best to serve Metallia so that she might reward us for our hardships?”

A stiffness passed through the general and her sharp features grew razor edged as her face hardened. The more Laurelite spoke, the more she hardened, and anger simmered below the surface. She had given Hessonite the benefit of the doubt and looked to her with hope. It had been the General Queen who had dashed that, and it hadn't even been her that had voiced her protests. It had been Schörl stepping forward after her, with Xenotime and Leucite, to air their grievances. Once she agreed with, sure, but she had not been the one to voice them.

The hope she had had that the Queen would side with her sputtered and died slowly, leaving her feeling like something had shriveled up in her chest. It was obvious now that she wasn't going to get the support she needed here, and there was a crushing sense of disappointment in it.

An apology. Cinnabar's mouth twisted instinctively, as though she had bitten a lemon, and she had to fight herself to smooth the expression away.

"I brought my lieutenants to see how the Spec Ops branch was run, so that they could make an informed choice when it came time. Unlike others, I don't push them into any one branch out of the gate." She said stiffly. And how does it look to a lieutenant, to be pulled up before everyone and have their starseed ripped out, just to prove they weren't ready to join this exclusive branch?

It was assinine. It was destructive.

The frown on Cinnabar's face deepened, her expression darkening as she pulled herself up tall and tucked her arms behind her back. The suggestion that she might attempt an assassination on a General Queen, or participate in a conspiracy to... the insult bit deep. It was almost literally painful to stand there and listen to the Queen she had put so much faith in... call her loyalty into question. Task her to act like an adult... <******** this s**t.

"With all due respect, your Majesty, I would prefer to arrange my own meeting with General Queen Hessonite. You are a busy woman. You don't need to go out of your way just for a single, disgruntled general." She said, her voice flat and dull. She dipped her head with a stiff motion, abbreviating the bow she usually made, but with none of the warmth she usually performed it with. It was a formality now, rather than the expression of devotion it used to be. "If you would dismiss me, Majesty, I believe you have far more important work to attend to than my petty and childish grievances. I will take up no more of your valuable time."

While Laurelite did not seem pleased with Cinnabar's shift in attitude, she did not comment on it. She looked at the General for a moment, expression peaceful but otherwise unreadable. After a short silence, she simply nodded. "I trust you to do so, General. I hope that, in the future, we can all work towards the betterment of the Negaverse. Do not let this dampen your spirits. We will speak again, if you need to."

She did not want to let Cinnabar part on a sour note, but she understood that the General had said her piece and now wanted her peace.

"You are dismissed."
