This enemy can be fought solo!

You venture a bit out into the swamplands, following a strange sound in the distance -- and before you can get too far, you spot a medium-sized animal, floundering around a bit among the trees. As you approach, you notice something strange: some shredded fabric still clinging around one foot, or around its neck, like the remnants of some long-destroyed clothing.

At this point, it occurs to you that this might be a transformed human being. maybe it's even one of you. And you must capture it.

Except it doesn't seem to want to be captured. Your approach spooks it, and it attacks you in blind fear.

Hit Points: 30 HP
Damage: 4 HP each time you attack

If you bring this monster down to 5HP or below, it is injured and can be captured and brought back to the campsite for safe keeping until you can figure out what to do. However, if you drop it below 0HP, you kill it.

Either outcome, once finished witth at least 500 words each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-40: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
41-99: User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Moly Flower: a small white flower with a dark root. You're not quite sure what it's for, but decide to keep it.
100: User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Fine Wine: Why would an animal have a bottle of wine? Considering all that's going on, we strongly suggest you don't drink. If you act rashly and do, though, please PM and be blue for consequences.

When he first saw it, Brian assumed that it was an aquatic snake. He also assumed that snakes were indigenous to Louisiana and thus it could very well be another native critter that was more or less disinterested in them. He'd seen things here and there that didn't seem determined to murder him.

It was the scrap of fabric that got him. It was white, torn, and wrapped around the head of the creature. The fabric floated in the water like pale hair and Brian was sure it was a Chosen. As far as he knew, oceanic eels didn't live in swamps.

"Look, do you see it?" Brian asked, pointing to the wisp of white. Without a thought, he started down the muddy bank toward the water. There had been more near the campsite that they could leave it in and let everyone know it was there.

Of course, when he reached for the slippery fish it snapped at him and caught a finger.

"Tch!" Stinking mud was no good for wounds.

Beth squinted where Brian pointed, seeing something floating in the water. She honestly didn't even want to be out in the forest, but Brian had mentioned a way to use her talents without crossing a line she didn't want to cross. From her distance, she couldn't quite see with any detail what had caught his eye. "I don't see--Brian, wait!" She tried to pick her way after him carefully but quickly. It was hard to both keep him in her sights and an eye on where to place her feet. "Please, I can't--" Her words were cut off as the toe of her front foot slid in the mud, sending her sliding down the bank, hands and knees first into the water. Before she could really register what had happened, something brushed against her hand.

That made her scream and flail around, her splashing probably catching Brian. Her hand made contact with something slimy and squishy and she instinctively slapped. Whatever it was didn't like that and she felt what could have been teeth in the skin of her palm.

Damn it! He had just assumed that Beth would be able to navigate down the hill herself. He'd forgotten about her heels! If he had carried her, though, they both would have gone down and he imagined that he was a bit too heavy to crash down on Beth safely.

Rather than apologize, he went into action. He missed her as she slid by and crashed into the water. With a wince, he dove down to lift her out and saw the eel snap down on her hand. Chosen or not, that wasn't okay! He scooped his arms beneath Beth's and lifted her up, then took the eel by the throat (all of it was throat, really) and heaved it back into the water bodily.

"Are you okay?" he asked, eying the bite mark. Oh, right. They both had protection. He hefted her to her feet and made sure she was stable while the eel swam in frantic circles.

It did not take Brian long to help her to her feet. Part of her was mortified and didn't want to look down to see the damage done to her coat, stockings, and previously cleaned shoes. Part of her wondered at how easily Brian had set her back on her feet, like picking up a doll. At his question, she nodded a bit listlessly, looking down at her hand. No new scar, nothing except a bruised ego and a new hatred for aquatic animals. Chosen, or no, she wasn't about to let that stand. "Thanks for getting me out of there."

She kept a hand on Brian's shoulder, trying not to get in the way of any movement as she tested her footing. She was calf deep, almost knee deep, in the water and it was murky enough that she didn't want to move for fear of losing her balance again. But when the eel brushed against her leg, she couldn't help it and squealed, kicking out at it. She couldn't tell if she hit it, but she thought she saw it disappear under the water, slipping away from the pair.

"Okay, I know I expressed that I really didn't want to hurt them, but....I don't like slimy things." She had the breathless, skittish nature of someone who was extremely grossed out but wanted to keep it on the down low. But the truth would out, and she couldn't keep it as secretive as she wanted.

"No problem," Brian insisted. He was never one for expensive clothing, but he imagined that Beth's previously shiny heels had cost a pretty penny. Had she been caught on short notice this time or had she just not learned to spurn heels last time? Well, regardless of what it was, he was sure that they were well and truly ruined now, if not just from the mud from their brief bath. If sneakers weren't going to react well, heels certainly weren't. He knew that much from his sisters.

He watched her kick out then and fought back a laugh. He did smile slightly, though. They had just been through this whole thing in conversation, and there she went attacking the poor thing. Of course it had attacked her directly, but still! He stayed in place so Beth wouldn't tumble over.

"No toad-hunting, eh?" he asked. He reached out to help her let go then and made sure she was sturdy before crouching by the water. The eel looked up at him and hissed, so he reached in and grabbed it again. This time he didn't let go.

Now he did laugh. He had never done that before! Contrary to popular belief, Texans did not necessarily take part in alternative fishing methods. He put it back in the water almost immediately, but kept a hold of it this time.

"We're going to have to get back pretty fast, I think," he said, "That lake we passed, we're going to have to put it in there, I think."

"Gods, no, I don't think I'd be able to catch them, much less actually grab one." She wrinkled her nose at the thought. Who would ever do something like that for fun?

When Brian crouched down, considering the water, Beth leaned forward to watch his movements, curious to see what he was thinking. Then she lurched back, startled by his sudden movement to grab the eel. When he laughed, she grinned, hoping the news was good. "Nice catch! Is it over?" At his words she let out a breath. "Thank Hera." She nodded at his assertion that they needed to go quickly. Though it had bit her a few times and caused her to slip towards the water, she didn't want it to dry out before they got it to safety.

"You'll be okay, Mr. Eel. And...I'm sorry I kicked you."
