"Once a healthy and beautiful piece of land the Ashland is now dead, nothing grows in the Ashland's even though part of the river flows though this land.
Created by centuries of war and armies marching over the ground, from the grass set ablaze thousands of armies, the earth being turned by magic. The only reason this land is ever used any more is to check on the irrigation systems that lead to the small amount of farmland that belongs to the Phobos kingdom
A desolate wasteland twenty miles wide and sixty miles across it is not a place that you want to find yourself lost in as the Ashlands are confusing as it can easily turn you around...your best bet is to follow your ears until you find the river and then follow it out of the Ashlands...
A rumor also circulates the Ashlands, that if you are here after dark you might see the ashes lift from the ground...some even report seeing a six armed mad man fighting invisible dragons and crying out for his families murderer to show himself..."

Looking over the barren landscape Khree'en's brown-amber hair tied back in a single warriors braid that ran from the top of her head to the nape of her neck and tied pack with a simple leather tie. Her brown eyes narrowed as she locked onto her target, pulling back on the bowstring with the arrow notched at the center. Khree'en licked her lips, her tongue touching her top canine tooth "ready" she whispered as she eyed the young fawn. It was her lucky day that the little animal had lost its way and stumbled into the Ashlands. Khree'en pulled the string a little tighter only to stop short when a buck come trotting in, standing next to the little fawn. Sighing slightly Khree'en let slack return to the bow before she stood up, her movement startling the buck and fawn, causing them to flee toward greener pastures.
Standing up Khree'en took a deep breath, letting it out though her mouth and causing a few stray hairs to float upward before falling back down onto her face. Walking atop the ashes Khree'en walked over to the river, it was the only sign of life in this ruined land. Kneeling down next to the bank Khree'en felt the black ashes decorate her knees as she dipped her hands into the cold water, bringing it to her lips as she put her bow down. Dipping both of her hands into the water and bringing it to her lips to drink.

After a year of sitting and moping in the castle, it was high time for Kyran to go outside and have some fresh air for once. Since the eldest brother Herod became the king, Kyran found nothing to be upset about. Herod is the best candidate to be the king. However, Kyran couldn't help but feel something was wrong. How could so many things terrible at once? First the Emperor of Epsilon, then the Bellris Kingdom turing into a republic, the plague, Father's death, and now the disaster in Ethe. Now, survivors of Ethe were now here in Phobos of all places. It was no secret that Phobos was difficult to live in; it is the place was survival of the fittest. Why would Ethe come here? There were limited resources already..
Kyran sighed and wiped his nose. The ashes upon the lands were enough for Kyran to have a field day of allergies. However, he hardly cared. What was the point? There was no point anymore anyway. After all, Kyran was going to die some day, so what would it matter if he was in bed for the next week, month, or year? While walking absently, he barely noticed movement by the river and was surprised by the sound of something. It wasn't until Kyran saw a blur of brown from the corner of his eye when he realized he wasn't alone. As he identified the blur as retreating deer, Kyran then noticed a crouched woman at the river.
Honestly, Kyran didn't think the river water would even be drinkable here. The ash blew into the river, wouldn't the water be.. well... bad to drink? It made Kyran wonder when was the last time he had a proper drink of water; Was it one hour ago or ten hours? Kyran calmly approached, quite honestly forgetting about the ever important and common logic: stranger danger. Perhaps the dramatic change in life allowed Kyran to be more brave, however, reckless could be a bit more accurate. "I had no idea the water was alright to drink here." he commented casually, not bracing himself if she were to attack him. While he was carrying a quarterstaff on his back, Kyran wasn't here for a fight. It was strictly only for emergencies.

The voice was strange to hear in such a desolate land, a place well known for its solitary space as a land of ashes. Khree'en opened her hands, letting the water fall from her cupped palms as she went for the sword at her side instead of the bow laying in the ashes. The sword didn't have a sheath, leaving the strange blade open for gleaning with the eye. The blackstone blade obvious wasn't polished but it had its serrated teeth had their own shine that reflected the ashes on the ground. Khree'en's hand held onto the silver grip, her wet hands gripping it tight despite the possibly of slipping if she dared to pull it.
Her round eyes would land on a waif that stood a ways from her. He was thin and sickly looking just in his statue, hardly even close to being a threat to the barbarian woman. Taking her hand from the blade at her side Khree'en didn't bother to go for her bow, it was a hunting bow, staining it with the blood of men wouldn't be beneficial and it would ruin the arrows, she knew enough to not try that, especially when she would have to remake the arrows she used. Khree'en put her hands back into the water "If you know how to drink it you are fine Khree'en muttered, her voice was a little gravelly as if she hadn't spoken in a while, or perhaps it was her normal voice and she normally just sounded like she just gargled a whole bunch of stones.
Khree'en let the water wash over her hands for a few moments before she brought her hands up, some of the water falling from the crack of her two hands, however most of it managed to stay. Some of the ash fell though the water while most of it remained floating. Khree'en brought the liquid to her mouth and drank away, some of the ash did go into her mouth, however most of it got caught on her lips. When she was finished drinking Khree'en would wipe the ashes that had been caught on her lip onto her wrist before turning her head to spit into the ashes around her before standing up, grabbing her bow. Her knee's and shins were covered in ash, staining her skin and clothing. "Why would the animals still come here if you couldn't drink the water" she muttered under her breath as she tried to wipe the ashes off, only to end up smearing them onto her skin.

Kyran stood still as the woman reached for her blade. While his heart did jump in fear, there was a aching resignation. Her grip was tight on the blade, making Kyran wonder if she was going to attack him. However, she then loosened it and returned to drinking the ashen water. Kyran did not dare to come closer, not knowing who this mysterious woman was. If she was so quick to defend herself, he would be dealing with someone who had to resort of violence. Perhaps a soldier? Or maybe an outlaw?
"I assure you, I know how to drink water. I was simply under the impression that not many animals would come to the river in the Ashlands in the first place. Where there is water, there is life. But as you can see, this place is a wasteland." Kyran replied. "I was unaware that deer can survive here. They must be much stronger than expected." He went to the river and crouched down to cup some water in his hands. The water itself was gray, making Kyran wary to drink. However, if the deer and she could drink it, then he could also! He brought the liquid to his lips and drank it carefully. Immediately, Kyran coughed as the ash overtake his senses. Most of the liquid came back up, making Kyran cough violently and releasing the water.
Alright, maybe drinking the river water was not such a good idea after all, but, c'est la vie. Kyran sniffed and wiped his mouth on his sleeve. "Much stronger than any person could expect.." he mused aloud, mostly to himself. A life of a deer must be better if they can drink water from a place like this. He rubbed the tears from the corners of his eyes as the sensation. "And you must be strong also to be able to drink this water." he continued, giving a thin smile to the woman. He wanted to ensure that she knew he was not a threat.

Water is water though, it does not matter if it tastes good" she said to him. He looked like he was from the city, she had never seen such richly dyed clothing in the villages she dared to venture close to so it was strange to see him so far into the ashlands.
Slinging the bow over her shoulder Khree'en looked down into the water before taking one uneasy step into the murky liquid, her boots instantly becoming waterlogged, not that that was a problem, with the world being so hot she could do with a treck back in squishy shoes. Wadeing though the water so she was standing on the other side she would hope up onto the opposite bank so she was closer to the stranger "Animals are stronger. they are animals." Khree'en said to him, ashes starting to stick to her calves.
Leaning in slightly Khree'en's hair would fall over her shoulders, tickling her collar bone. It would be the only indication that she had moved before she would take a soft sniff and move back, her lips pulled into a grimace. He smelt like a city person. She would say that he smelt like horses if he was a stable boy, or a prince if he smelt of perfume, but he smelt clean- kind of like he bathed more then village folk. Water is life. All know that, animals, people...were water is green is... Khree'en wasn't smart, but she wasn't stupid either; she was the type of person to learn from experience. Crouching down so she was level with his knees for a moment she picked up some ashes "This was green. It will be green again in soon." she said as she rubbed the ashes together between her hands, turning them black "Whatever this was before will grow again bigger and healthier. I have seen people burn old corn plants when they were done and then plant in the ash. I don't know why it comes back when it is planted in the ashes, but it does." Khree'en said to him "So when it grows again it will start at the river I think." she said to him before turning to look at him now that the ashes where fully rubbed into her hands "why are you here? You are a long way away from the city...and you look like death." she asked, reaching out and poking him a little above the end of his ribcage "Not that strong to be out here for a long time" she commented.

He was dimly aware of the woman glancing over his form as fought against the urges to continue coughing. After finally calming his lungs, Kyran took a breath of air. Never again was he going to actually drink from this river. If only there was a better way to separate the grit from the water. Perhaps he should find out how it is done back in the capital. While heating the water until it boils was an obvious choice, could there possibly by another way to extract the dirt better? He was surprised when she stepped into the water, sinking into the murky water. Kyran raised an eyebrow at the logic. Animals are stronger, huh? Kyran had always thought that dragons and phoenixes trumped animals. With the society, full of new technology and abilities, wouldn't they be stronger than animals?
He rarely crouched still, as the woman advanced toward him and was on the opposite bank. He reached for the quarterstaff slowly, unsure what she was doing. While it was easier to speak now they were closer, Kyran understood that this encounter was odd. Dangerous even. And Kyran was at a clear disadvantage out in the middle of nowhere. But when she picked up the ashes, Kyran shook his head sadly. This place, it has been like this for centuries. This land has been like this before either of them were born; This wartorn land had no chance in any sort of reincarnations. "It is a rather hopeful thought." he admitted, wishing that what she said could be true. But it couldn't be. If it was possible, Father would have found a way to recreate farmland from this land. But obviously, Father never did.
Kyran looked back at the woman, who seemed focused on why he was here. Well, he could ask the same thing! While this woman was obviously physically fit and healthy looking, the Ashlands are not exactly the most life-giving places. However, she seemed fairly knowledgeable of this place and the sort of life. Speaking that he had not been attacked or mugged, she could not be an outlaw. However, she was definitely not the average peasant either. All Kyran would have to do is to be careful and respectful. When she poked him, Kyran flinched; He was not a person who has much physical contact. It was an odd action in Kyran's eyes, hence the flinch and shuffle away.
"Death has an appearance..?" he echoed, purple eyes darkening. Looking like death was never such a good thing on any person's list, but whatever. Kyran knew that he would pass relatively earlier than others. If following the logic, was it coming soon? Was this woman able to sense it? A strange, prickling feeling crawled up his wrist as Kyran recalled seeing Father to the tomb to rest with the past rulers of Phobos. An awkward silence came between the two, as Kyran could not think of an answer. Why was he here? "I have no reason to be here. I started walking and could not stop." he finally answered. His mind has been on such a blank slate for the past year, that it was only now regaining some form of vitality. "Why are you here? There is hardly a reason now to come here." Kyran shot back.

The fact that City folk didn't have to follow the food didn't occur to her as fast as it should have, however it did eventually dawn on her that the city folk had easier ways of finding food for all of the numbers their big buildings held. So instead Khree'en hooked a thumb in the direction the buck and the fawn had ran off in "were the food goes I to go." she said to him, using her other hand to push her brown-amber hair back as she brought her thumb hand down "Tracking it means I might find more. If I find more it means more food to bring back. The more food I bring back the longer I can go without hunting again" she said to him. "Food came here so I came here. she ended with, seeming to have not taken her own life into account when she had traversed into the Ashlands.
Khree'en looked toward were the Buck and Fawn had run off, she could see very tiny specks off in the distances and if she ran she could probably catch up if they didn't move any father or hear her coming, but even she knew that was unlikely. Khree'en took a deep breath though her mouth and let it out harshly though her nose before she turned on her heel and started to walk upriver toward the badlands. "if you were walking you should probably go home. the Ashlands are creepy in the night time. she muttered, the hunting bow readily out just incase she saw some prey.
Khree'en's Brown-amber hair stuck to the nape of her neck, the braid down the left side of her face was the only part of it that moved freely as she moved. Nothing would willingly come into the ashlands unless it was being chased or crossing it In order to get to the other side...or looking for death. Khree'en stepped on something that she thought was a rock only for it to give way under her squishy boot. Looking down Khree'en saw the caved in skull of a poor soul, male or female she wouldn't be able to tell "Sorry" she muttered to the skull, another grimace coming over her features now that she had cracked a dead mans skull, seemed kind of morbid and foretelling to find a skull in the ashlands, so Khree'en quickly kicked up some ash in order to cover the skill again, blackening it before continuing on.

"Where the food goes, you go.." Kyran echoed, nodding in understanding. That was why she was here, to hunt the deer. Guess deer would be the ideal food to eat in these parts. He tilted his head when she stood up and started walking up the river bank. By curiosity, he also stood up and followed slightly. This was the first company outside of the castle for the past year basically, and Kyran couldn't help but want to ask. "The Ashlands.. creepy? I've seen creepier, you can count on that." he promised, almost cheerful.
Just then, Kyran hear the sound of something something crunching. He then saw the skull. Kyran shuddered, recalling his rage the year before where he was smashing skulls. He didn't comment, but it felt like some strange omen. Death in the ashlands.. It reminded him of what happened in Ethe. Were these skulls of the people from Ethe who fled here? He bit his lip when a voice came from a bit off. The voice, he recognized. Kyran jumped and turned to see Herod of all people here.
What on earth was Herod, big brother and the king doing here? "Ah.. um.." Kyran replied, looking at the ground in shame. Kyran was rarely seen in the castle especially in the last year since Father's death. Although he was supposed to step up and help Herod, Kyran couldn't bear showing his face to anyone, even the new King. True, Kyran was there when Herod became king. However, Kyran hid his face when he could. "No reason.. I thought a walk would help wit my thoughts." he answered, his answers short. Taking a walk to the Ashlands from the castle sounded like an idiotic answer. However, it was the truth. His voice was tight, almost reedy out of shame. He didn't want Herod to see him.

You have not been here at night if you think you have seen creepier. Khree'en said as she continued walking "They say Leo still fights here" she said, only to stop when she heard more noise. Khree'en turned, the sweat on her face feeling amazing as the wind brushed against it, her brown-amber hair flicking her cheeks as she turned her bow on Herod, thinking that perhaps it was an animal, well she was not so lucky, it was the ashlands after all. Huffing in anger Khree'en lowering her bow and arrow and putting the arrow back in its quiver before again slinging the bow over her shoulder.
Kyran was the boy's name, it seemed like the name of a boy for sure, the name did not ring any bells though, after all it wasn't like she paid attention to royalty- she didn't know that she was in the presence of a king and prince and as far as she was concerned; the Phobosan rulers were traitors, bowing to an empire on behalf of all the tribes without asking for the input of the other tribes, and now with only the Guzul and Rhen left to assimilate into the normal life it would seem like a moot point now, but it really wasn't.
Taking a look at the black haired, taller male that had just appeared she could tell that they were somehow related- brothers or cousins or something like that, half brothers maybe. "The ashlands are busy today" she muttered "Lots of foot traffic....you know your probably walking on the ashes and bones of dead warriors right she said crossly as she looked at the newcomer.

"Leo.. May he guide the kingdom.." Kyran replied, pondering. The god Leo of all beings still fights here. Kyran has heard plenty of these stories, from books, from the Maude, from Mother. As far as Kyran believed, there was no possible way Leo would still be fighting here. It must be some form of illusion or form of fear that people feel in their hearts. A god would not be in this place, continuing to fight a war that has ended centuries ago. It was just superstition to tell off youngsters from playing here probably. That was what Kyran decided. As he glanced over at Herod, Kyran wanted to just want to crawl into a hole. Herod came all the way out here searching for him? That was even worse.
The woman next to him did not seem pleased by the appearance of another person. She commented about the ground they walked on the ruins of past warriors. Kyran scratched the back of his head, unsure what to say. While it was true, what else could be done to honor the thousands souls that have departed in this land? He looked over at Herod who replied about the battlefield being a pathway to a greater future. What Herod said was right, the battlefield is the way. It was the battlefield where true strength rose to dictate those who live and die. War was hell, but it was where warriors fought for their beliefs.
"Brother.. I would like to ask why you are so far from home. I hope you did not come all this way just for me." Kyran asked, approaching Herod with a hand over his heart as a gesture of respect. He lifted the cowl of his cloak, as Herod has taken his own cloak off. It was almost strange to see Herod now. Ever since Herod became king and Kyran distanced himself, Herod seemed different. More commanding, more free. More powerful, but warmer than Father. Of course, this was Kyran's two cents.

It wasn't that she didn't belief in gods, it was just that Leo was a Dragon, so she was not a fan.
Looking over at the new person once again she couldn't help the slight growl that came from her throat City people do not know about what a warrior fights for. All you do is sit and eat until you get fat. and lazy. real warriors do not need to wait for a battlefield." she said, her lower lip curling up slightly as she put her hand back onto the grip of her black claymore, her fingers playing just above the tarnished silver dragons that danced across the guard. She played with the idea of drawing her sword on the taller of the two men, but even if the tiny one wasn't an active threat it was still two against one, the taller man looked like he could hold his own, and in a battle it took one smack to the back of the head to change it, and she knew much about that from her earlier days, some pretty city dweller tried to kidnap her for unknown reasons, she had never been so happy to take a trophy, it was a reminder that pretty city people weren't honorable folk...A barbarian will cut your throat in front of you, in her experience a city born man will cut you down from behind, the bracelet hit the inside of her wrist as if for emphasis "all you pretty people are ugly-" she said as she decided to take her hand off her sword and thump her chest three times with her fist as an emphasis for the soul, a word she didn't commonly use and hence did not recall.
In the midst of rolling her eyes and grimacing She turned her head so she could look another way, her eyes catching on something that seemed kind of like a still fire in the sea of ash. Walking away from the two men she traversed over to the still fire and kicked it slightly, and without any resistance it detached from something with a quick and effortless snap, rolling and shaking off ash as it stopped to show a slightly distorted face, partially rotted away and partially preserved due to the surroundings. It looked like it had been a woman of bright red hair and as Khree'en bent down and put her hand on the ashes below it, pulling on what seemed like fabric, forcing some of the ash to fall away to show green silky clothing, it was without a doubt some highborn lady that had met her end here by the looks of it. Poking around more Khree'en would find an arrow lodged deep into the back of the woman, so far that all that protruded from the cadavers back were a few feathers, gold lined and dyed red meaning it had been a guard or a soldier who had loosed the arrow.
Khree'en snorted slightly, loosing air from her nose so she didn't breath in the stench "see? you city folk even hunt your own. and you don't last any longer for it" she said as she started to push the cadaver around, as morbid as it looked and sounded- she wasn't poking at it for fun, she grabbed anything she could find from it, a few high class bracelets made from gold and rubies, a rose broach that was attached to the former ladies fancy clothing, a ring with an ornate L plastered on it that made it look like a signet ring, all which would disappear into Khree'en's pockets or shoes for safekeeping.

H E R O D ✹ L E T H O ▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄ ❝..Next to the Throne..❞ ┏━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓ Herod would hear his brother's prayer to Leo as he blinked slowly. His hand would go to his chest and nod his head at it. The God was the one they served as kin to the past. His religious ties weren't strong, but Herod's connection the past and respect for it's traditions made him reasonably endearing of Leoistic customs. He'd then hear her bellow at the mere name of the God of the land, making Herod's eyes look over to her. He'd shake his head a bit while squeezing his hand over his chest. He didn't enjoy this woman's mouth too much, and even with his brother around, Herod let off an aura of distrust to the situation. He'd look at Kyran after and nod a bit.
"You are my Kin, it is only right my brother." He'd say while his eyes followed to the woman. He took notice to the hand she moved to the sword she had and let his hand touch the long sword. He didn't mind a battle, though he didn't want Kyran to be hurt in the condition he was in. In which Herod would watch her as she spoke of how he knew not of what a warriors fight was. "You misunderstand who I am. I am not a swine of nobility who sits on a golden pillow and has a slave pour soup into my lips. I am a man, who draws his sword in the name of his land." He'd say while his eyes looked to her while the golden seemed to glow a bit. "A warrior is a man who lays his life on the line each time he draws from his scabbard for what he believes in. And won't hesitate to lay his life down for faith in what he's fighting for. Even if ideals don't mesh." He would say while closing his eyes and releasing the long sword. His eyes opened once more as he saw the pompel of the claymore she had. His eyes squinted while he tried to figure out why it seemed familiar. Was it like what he saw in the book? Though, it couldn't be. She was a barbarian.
He'd then hear what she said about pretty people. The man adjusted his scarf while he shook his head. "I think you have an ascued look on beauty if you think I'm pretty. Or that a crooked view on life if you believe looks dictate anything." His hand would go into his satchel and pull from it a book with a damp corner. A book of old Phobian fairy tales. He'd hold it towards Kyran's direction as he looked to the woman, began to show a noble corpse. An innocent on the battlefield who had been loss. His eyes blinked while she began to loot her it seemed and lecture on her mistrust. "You don't think taking from the dead is not a dishonor?" He'd ask as he slowly began to approach her. His hands by his side while he blinked towards her with a glowing glare. ┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛ ▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄▀▄
