"Jordan?" she said softly. Temperance wasn't entirely sure it was him - the ball had changed his clothing after all, and masks were confusing. But, despite their brief separation, it appeared he was here, too. He'd been speaking briefly to Bennett and she wondered if he held the same goal as her.

"Are you looking for something, too?"

"Temperance?" Jordan nodded. "It's me," he said. "I'm looking for a present, and not having much success. How about you?" He hadn't seen anyone else he knew while he was wandering around, and while he was trying not to show it, he was feeling decidedly misplaced among the strange and fantastic people and costumes everywhere. It was nice to see Temperance again.

She breathed out silently in relief, unaware she'd been holding her breath. "For Bennett - kimono guy? I've checked some places, although I'm unsure of what he might like. At this point, we might as well scour random corners." She paused, one foot tapping. Maybe that wasn't such a bad idea.

"He kind of looks like a characters from a video game, doesn't he?"

"Yeah, that's the guy. I've been looking around, but I feel a little weird about it. I managed to knock over a fruit tray in the scarlet room," he said sheepishly. "There's got to be something lying around, right?"

He laughed. "He does. NPC with a quest?"

"I tried to get a book and it combusted." She fell silent, thinking. "If this is a quest, like in a video game, the objective would be someplace stupid that doesn't make sense. Hmm... want to, um, start searching pots or something along the walls?"

It sounded flimsy and silly even to her ears, but Bennett hadn't exactly given them a list. She wished this ball came with quest markers.

"Well, I guess we're playing by their rules, so we may as well try the way that doesn't make sense in the way we're used to." Jordan shrugged. "I'll start checking vases and trash cans if you'll take the walls?"

He suited words to actions and moved to peek inside an elaborate urn on a side table. He felt silly, but it was worth a try.

"Don't break too many pots, Link." With that, she left him to his vases and stared blankly at a wall. Hoisting off a painting and carting it over would probably not be met by joyous rapture by anyone. Even if the painting was pretty creepy. A boy with no eyes and far too many teeth faced the camera as his limbs dissolved into mist. It looked altogether too lifelike, despite the supernatural bent of the painting. Shivering, she turned away and walked briskly along the wall.

She stepped forward when she heard the silken crush of something underneath her foot. Fearing a bug, she slowly lifted her foot, steadying herself with a hand along the wall. Cigarettes. Temperance frowned; Bennett had been smoking, and while she was loathe to perpetuate such a deadly habit, this might work, maybe. If they didn't belong to anyone. Well, there were dark-corner-on-the-floor cigarettes so... maybe no one wanted them.

Scooping them up (expect the one woefully crushed by her foot), she glanced around for Jordan. "I, uh, found some cigarettes. Do you think they'd work?"

Jordan had checked several of the decorative objects and found nothing much interesting by the time Temperance called for his attention. He considered whether the weird, self-contained bottle he'd found on the mantelpiece would do, but concluded that if he couldn't figure out what it was for, it might not be the right kind of thing to bring as a gift. He turned to inspect what Temperance had. "Well, he was smoking," he said. "That might work. Where did they come from?"

"Uh," she said, her eyes sheepish behind her mask. "The floor? B-but we don't have to tell him that, right?" She paused, a grimace covering her face. "I guess that sounds pretty terrible. I just, um, want to find out as much as I can. I don't want anyone to die..." And if floor cigarettes did it, then she'd roll with it. Temperance really didn't have any better ideas; no one she'd spoken to had been perfectly explicit in the things they'd asked for. She shifted from foot to foot, looking at Jordan.

"What do you, uh, think?"

"Seems like not everyone in the Court wants anyone to die either," Jordan said thoughtfully. "So hopefully getting information won't take too much prying." He shrugged. "If this'll get us something, I'm good with it. Traditionally, faeries don't give you anything for free, and if they do you'd better be really wary of it. I mean, in stories, at least," he finished, sounding suddenly a little less sure of himself.

"I like the idea of a trade; it seems, um, safer." She twirled a cigarette in her fingers. "I just would rather nobody died tonight... and I think the best way to prevent it is finding enough information. If.. you want, J-jordan, if I find out other things, I can meet up with you later and share whatever I know?" She wanted to work solo for a bit, pretend she was the main character of a video game, someone who Got Things Done, kicked a**, chewed bubblegum, etc. Basically make full use of a masked ball.

"Should we go deliver our... 'gift'?"

"Sure. If I can find out anything else, I'll share also," he offered. Splitting up didn't seem like it would be considerably more dangerous than sticking together, and it might increase their chances of getting different information if they talked to different people.

"Let's go get these back to him before they vanish before our eyes," he agreed, only half joking.

"Considering where we are, I wouldn't doubt things disappear or grow legs and walk off. " She looked down distrustfully at the cigarettes in her hand. Then Temperance shrugged and readjusted her mask.

"As a medical professional, I feel bad passing these off..." Still, she walked briskly back to Bennett. Hopefully, he'd like them anyway.
