A favor for the Burning Man
User Image

The burning man looks you over. "You want information about this? Who'll live, and who'll die? Fine--but you must carry a message for me. I can't leave this spot." The high stool had been specially fireproofed, after all. In a place surrounded by so much fabric, he's a unique hazard.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2016 8:38 pm

To successfully complete The Burning Man's favor, you must roll three six-sided die. These will select your solo/duo story elements! If an element has (Fail) next to it, disregard any further rolls and write a short post relating how you got there. You may then retry, but only after your first post is filled!

If you're soloing it, you just fill in that post with your character's progress through the favor. Should you choose to RP this favor with another player (or more than one friend!) please make a thread in the event forum and link it in your roll post when you're done.

FIRST DIE: To whom is the message being delivered?
1 - s**t! I forgot! (Fail)
2 - 57 cockroaches in two distinct suits
3 - The Eldritch Gentleman
4 - A young plant-person with long, braided branches for hair
5 - A sprightly servant
6 - An elderly-looking spider person

SECOND DIE: What is the message?
1 - It's a request for more wine.
2 - It's a reminder as to "the deal".
3 - s**t! I forgot! (Fail)
4 - It's a compliment on their dancing.
5 - It's a warning about their familiarity with another attendee.
6 - Something something tiny cakes? (Fail)

THIRD DIE: Do you successfully deliver the message?
1 - Yes, but it got a little garbled in translation.
2 - No, but I got a really funny story to tell the Burning Man when I get back. (Fail)
3 - Yes, and I did it perfectly.
4 - No, and I think I need to get new clothes before going back. (Fail)
5 - Yes, and it's a bit ******** up, but I got it delivered, okay? Jeez.
6 - No, but they already knew what I had to say anyway.

Please quote shibrogane when you're done for information dispersal!

Great! If she took care of this little detail that The Burning Man wanted she could get some information. As he continued on the describe whom she was to deliver a message, Juniper found herself wondering how in the world the man was able to survive while being on fire all the time. Did it get old burning things whenever he touched them? Did he even burn things? Could he control it?

Through her musing she realized that she missed half of what he said. Snapping back to attention she noted he was looking at her expectantly and she blushed. "Um. Sorry who was it again you wanted a message sent to?"

[Temperance Clark: 25/25 pls don't singe my hair]

She had approached the immolated (immolating? currently in the state of being on fire) man with trepidation. However, he'd proved largely politely, if a bit disturbing to look at. Her hands itched and she wanted to ask how his skin had not completely bubbled up and melted off, how he still had lungs to breathe with, did this like, hurt? But she bit her lip and swallowed her questions. To be honest, it just wasn't in her plans today to make another weird ********' dude-creature-thing mad at her.

The message was simple, if ominous: find her target and warn them away from a rather slight thing they'd been dancing too closely with. She waited a seemingly endless time for the guest to move a little ways off alone before approaching.

And then, before the spider-esque person had a chance to react, she scooted on back to the burning man (had anyone told him there was a festival by that name?). Temperance tried to approach, but something was different. The heat he gave off had increased; she could feels her feet getting sweaty in her thin shoes. When the hem of her dress abruptly caught flame, she yelped, awkwardly stamped it out, and retreated.

jeremiah mercer || 25/25 || always a disappoint to his father

Jeremiah smiled briefly at Algie, whispering into his ear that he would be taking care of something. It was not much of a thing, just passing on a message to what looked like an elderly-spider creature. It's legs were long and spindly and, for a moment, he was reminded of the spiders at the hospital.

He wondered if they were related.

Certainly he had not expected it to be a compliment about their dancing but as he shifted and moved across the floor, weaving between groups of otherbeings and people, it was clear that they were an amazing dancer. Web spun about them, glimmering in the air and it was entrancing. The show of magic was enough to keep his eyes, his no longer quite human eyes, from looking elsewhere.

He ended up bumping into someone carrying a tray of food and, before he realized it, found his entire outfit covered in what looked like a pink mousse. Jeremiah scowled and flicked a hand at his outfit, magic washing away the mess and-

There was more glitter on him.

For ******** sake.

The detective lieutenant looked up and the elderly spider was gone.

For. ********. Sake.

Well, at least he was continuing his trend of not listening to father.

It figured that something didn't come from nothing, especially not with The- no.. he had a name. Ezra. It wouldn't be so difficult to relay a message of course. How hard could it be?

Algernon was referred to a spider creature, something in a waistcoat and monocle with tufts of hair- fur?- around it's mandibles that looked a bit like a bushy mustache. The spider creature was very properly dressed, it was ball after all, but seemed distracted.

"Excuse me-" Alg approached tentatively, hands tucked behind his back. The creature seemed to ignore him even with all of it's eyes. "Excuse me- sir?"

"WHAT WAS THAT?" A cracked, loud voice barked at him causing Algie to draw back.

"I've been asked to give you a message. A warning."

"WHAT WAS THAT? IT'S NOT MORNING." Jesus Christ.

"A WARNING." Alg spoke up, trying not to be rude but adamantly needing to tell this creature something.

"Well get on with it then-" Two of it's arms waved dismissively at him and it went back to suckling on something it was plucking up off of a plate and putting to it's mouth.

"About one of your acquaintances-" No reaction, "ABOUT ONE OF YOUR ACQUAINTANCES."

The spider's eyes seemed to focus on him. It was as if he knew right away to what the professor was referring. It glanced past Alg to Ezra, then back to the messenger.

"I don't need to be told anything about my friends!" The spider creature barked again, "And if it's coming from him-" two different, non-occupied arms, pointed, "I'm not interested."

"But-"

"I said not interested!!" The spider was leaving no room for debate. Alg bobbed on his feet, unsure if he should walk away or push his luck. He stepped back without looking, hit a server, and caused a chain reaction of smashed glasses and spilled champagne that left him splattered and damp with alcohol.

After a moment, she approached him again, only to be sent off on another errand to the same guest. She curtsied politely and delivered the compliment with a sincerity she didn't really feel. This whole party felt like a series of fetch quests, and Temperance had never been particularly good at them.

However, the recipient of the message cut her off, one spindly arm touching her lips. Then he walked away, clearly trying to be some sort of dramatic. Temperance watched, rubbing her lips, as he slid straight into a woman and ended up with punch all over his snowy white cravat. Her mouth quirked up. Well, maybe she'd tell the fiery guy this.

[Temperance Clark: 25/25 plants r ppl 2]

Finding the next message recipient was rather easy. After all, she didn't often see many plants up and walking about. Temperance wondered if there were many more plant-people in other Ashdown, even if she had a suspicion that this was Not Quite the same place at all. It was only too bad that the message was a warning. Temperance would have stayed and chatted with the plant person, but it would have seemed... wrong after saying 'oh hey stay away from that dude who looks like a bottle of lotion grew legs'.

She carefully stated who the sender of her message was first - Temperance wondered what would happen if they thought here, some lowly human-esque thing, was delivering veiled threats. The plant, whose name she now knew was a series of unpronounceable clicks, looked alarmed and immediately rushed off. Temperance quickly lost track of them in the crowd and headed back to report to the man on fire.

So for some ungodly reason, despite this dickhole burning her lungs and putting her in the hospital, Autumn felt... bad for him. Stuck on a chair, by his lonesome. In reality, it probably served him right, from lighting the rest of the place up, the ********. But still... she pitied him, god help her. Stuck alone on the night of a party, when everyone else was reveling in this masquerade pride and prejudice bullshit.

So she'd agreed to a favor. Run off to the dude in a plague doctor mask, requested some wine, and come back with...

"I. Really don't know how he got Red Vines from Red Wine. But I got them," Autumn shrugged, handing them over. Close enough.

2 - fail ):

[25/25 | EVE]: failed attempt
"Their father was part grape vine," Eve explained, flatly and sullenly upon returning. She was rubbing lightly at the back of one hand, that had broken out in a splash of red welts like poison ivy. "So, they took the request as a threat. Did you know this would happen, Ezra?"

Nathaniel Parrish - 25 / 25 - fiyah fiyah burning bright

"Look," said Nathaniel patiently, "I just thought I'd, you know, warn you. About, uh." He tried to think of a proper way to say it. "Fraternizing too closely with others, it, uh...can reflect badly on ya'll's -" He cleared his throat hastily. " - on yourself, so just, uh, think about it, all right?"

He left the spidery person hastily and scooted back to the man on fire, Nathaniel flashing him what he hoped was a relatively convincing smile.

"I've delivered the message for you," he said, nodding. "Hopefully that'll help you."

Even if he was going to be dreaming of spiders from now on.

alois scholz (unmasked) || 25/25 || derp

"Deliver a message? Zat's ze easiest sing I'f done all day. Fine. Don't burn anysing down until I get back." Alois left at a brisk pace. The party sprawled with all manner of individuals, some unmistakably human and others with the distinct air of the otherworld. He spotted a deer, some cockroaches, other forest types, Melany, Adoelle, the a*****e that he refused talking to... But where was this spider person? Truthfully Alois didn't know if he was looking for someone full-sized, or an actual spider like the one on top of his head.

Speaking of which... "Hej," he called upward. "You awake up zere? I need to find an elderly spider person. Haf' you seen zem? You'd tell me, yes?" But no answer came as the spider sat patiently in its web. "Yeah, ******** you too."

He spent the better part of forty-five minutes wading through the see of dancers and conversers, always scanning for this spider person that Ezra went on about. None here, none there, none anywhere. He tried some of the rooms, he tried scanning about the refreshment table, he looked near the spreads of fancy food for some indication of a spider. Nothing.

Until he finally landed eyes on the gentleman, poised as he was in one of the chairs toward the back of the room. Alois approached, then paused halfway as he considered the message he was supposed to give.

s**t.

"Should'f asked him to write it down... If we had a fireproof pen around."

jeremiah mercer || 25/25 || perfectly playing the part of dutiful son

The Burning Man had not, exactly, been pleased with the lack of message delivered the previous attempt. Though Jeremiah himself felt as if he was smoldering in annoyance of having mucked it up.

This time it was something else and not passing along information. His fingers brushed along Algie's palm before he stepped closer to the Burning Man but still a respectable distance. Jeremiah seemed to have no issue with the flames, not at all bothered by them anymore (a personal change; an acceptance).

A certain sprightly servant was, apparently, not returned with wine. Nor did it seem like Ezra was quite certain that they actually listened properly to him. A rather long and complicated wine name rolled off of his tongue and Jeremiah did not even ask him to repeat it. No, this he would do perfectly.

It took a little while before he found the sprightly servant, talking up the dancing spider from earlier no less.

"Forget something?" he asked politely, though the smile on his face said otherwise. The servant paled, their blue skin tinged white. There was a wine bottle and a glass on a tray, that looked specially made just for Ezra.

The wine, however, was the wrong one and Jeremiah, not missing a beat, rolled the correct name off of his tongue. "He's expecting you promptly with the correct wine."

Jeremiah returned to Ezra's table, a pleasant smile on his face, and his eyes glowing brightly. "They should be along in a moment with your wine."

Sure enough the sprightly servant was there a moment later with the correct bottle of wine and the specially made glass for him. There was even a brief show of Jeremiah opening the bottle properly and pouring the glass.

Just to go that extra little bit.

Chris Watts || 25/25 || Being useful!!

So he had failed at helping Shiloh, had failed with Melany or whatever, so you know what. ******** it. He was going to try his luck with the literal man on fire. It really couldn't get worse and anyways, it was a simple enough request. Take a message, deliver it somewhere, get information.

He made it across the room easy enough, finding a servant who he was supposed to ask for more wine. But he was tired, a little tipsy, and message came out more jumbled than it should have. But either the servant had been asked this before or could guess from Chris' state (he smelled pretty heavily of wine still from when he helped Thorne), that he promptly went off to fill the request.

Satisfied enough, Chris reported back to the man to say he had actually done something right for once.
