Name: Deimos Somnus
Deimos - One of Mars' moons, and the Greek God (more like personification) of Terror
Somnus - Roman God of Sleep

Blood colour: #00A18E ████08C2AC

Gender: Male

Symbol: User Image

Profile:

The first thing most people tend to notice about Deimos is his disheveled appearance. Due to frequent bouts of insomnia, he has a permanent case of the eyebags goin' on, often coupled with a slightly dazed expression as if he isn't exactly all there, but that's mostly just because he doesn't do the whole "facial expressions" thing very well. Regardless of whether or not he's been getting some decent shut-eye, his hair tends to stick up in all directions, though the left side of his head is especially bad as he tends to lay on it most often when he doesn't make it back to his recouperacoon. Clothing wise, Deimos sticks with whatever is comfy - his wardrobe is filled with soft sweaters, comfy shorts, and sweatpants - after all, falling asleep in form-fitted clothing is not exactly comfortable...

Deimos himself is a fairly laid back troll. He cares little for others, preferring to stick to his astronomical gadgets (star charts, telescopes, etc.), lusus, and his ever-growing collection of books and puzzles. Being a tealblood comes with some level of privilege, though Deimos seems to behave in a way that might indicate that he's either unaware of his true position in the hemospectrum or... well... simply doesn't care. He goes through the motions of paying respects to those in the higher castes, but when it really boils down to it he just doesn't have the energy to be all that invested in power structures. People, in general, are largely regarded as nuisances he'd rather not have to deal with at all - it just so happens that people of certain colors require more effort to get away from than others.

Of course, getting out of social situations requires some level of mental gymnastics that Deimos is not always up to performing. Depending on how much he's slept, his speech pattern tends to shift from painfully blunt to subtle enough for his dislike for socialization to go unnoticed. When he's really had a bad sleeping period, he tends to stay indoors rather than risk going outside. After a bad experience in the past, he's learned to just stay inside if he's gone too long without sleep.

When he is well rested, Deimos is quite the observationalist. The lack of sleep he normally has to wade through slows down his normally quick mind. Deimos is a pattern spotter - and for the most part this manifests in his interest in astronomy and puzzles. To say that his interest in the stars is strictly scientific would be inaccurate - its mostly that he enjoys creating star maps based off of his own observations. He could very well just get the official maps that have long since been completed by others before him (and he does have a few of them), but he finds entertaining to fill them out himself. Plus, comparing his novice maps to the Real Deal is the best way to learn in his mind.

For the times he can't go outside due to the sun's harsh light, but can't actually sleep either, he occupies his time with reading or puzzle-solving. After a while of being awake though, one's eyes start to get a bit fuzzy, so in addition to his slowly growing library of books, he's amassed a few audiobooks of his favorites to listen to. While he enjoys fiction (of the adventure/action/mystery variety), a good portion of his collection is focused on map making and astronomy.

While he hasn't really given much thought as to what he'd like to be when he grows up, he knows that he wants to leave Alternia to see the night sky as it's meant to be seen - from among the stars. Just... y'know, at a safe distance. He's not exactly sure how he's going to accomplish that, though. For one, he's not 100% sold on the fleet as being The Best Way to leave the planet and still be able to do the things he's actually interested in. And then there is the matter of his lusus....

Not caring much about other people and their things seems to be Deimos's biggest recurring issue- outside of sleep. More so than any other flaw, his general dislike and annoyance with others crops up and gets the best of him and in turn gets him into the most trouble if he happens to have the bad luck of talking to someone that retaliates when insulted/disrespected. There are just times his little brain-to-mouth filter seems to short circuit and instead of nodding along with whatever is being talked about, he can't help but just blurt out what he really thinks.... Which more often than not, is that he "doesn't care" about whatever is being talked about.

There are some things he does enjoy talking about though- fellow mappers or puzzle solvers are usually the types of people he genuinely does like being around. These are the rare times that he seems to light up with interest and come to life. He's not incapable of being nice- he's just very selective about who he is nice to. With similar minds, Deimos is far more talkative and up for participation. He actually makes an effort to understand others if he thinks they have at least a few things in common, and doesn't mind explaining himself multiple times on those days his brain is so muddled he doesn't make much sense.

Despite not really being a people-person, Deimos is not entirely a recluse. He does enjoy leaving the hive for walks through the forest and typically uses these walks as a way to map out the area around his hive for fun. He doesn't exactly make a point of talking to other people while he's out, but it certainly keeps him from wasting away indoors all of the time. He'll only avoid being outside when he's gone too long between sleep cycles since it poses a risk for his health.

Strengths:
  • Observant

Deimos is a watcher for the most part. He watches the world around him and learns from it. He only needs to see things a few times before he figures out how to do them himself... whether it be solving a problem, or learning a new skill.

  • Levelheaded

Deimos may get annoyed more easily as his lack of sleep increases, but for the most part he's actually fairly unflappable. This quality of his is quite useful when dealing with more unreasonable folk - or, well, people he thinks are unreasonable.

  • Astute

Going hand-in-hand with his observation skills, Deimos is tends to take things slow and think them out before acting... At least when he's rested enough. He's normally a very think-before-you-act sort of person and doesn't like to go headfirst into things without stepping back to analyze the situation.

Flaws:
  • Persnickety

Deimos has tastes and he is not exactly quiet about them. Some might think he's a little too picky for his caste, but there are some things in life that Deimos just won't settle on. Comfortable clothing, mentally stimulating company, and quality hobbyist products are just a few of his high standard areas. Things - or people - that don't measure up are quickly cast aside.

  • Critical

This trait mostly rears its head when he's tired- but once Deimos has gotten annoyed with something he tends to hyper focus on it and then immediately tear it apart. Whether it be objects or people, Deimos's critical gaze goes through every detail his eyes land on. Often times its just because he's tired, but once he's gone off on something or someone he has a tendency to think poorly of whatever it was that set him off- this makes him appear more judgmental than he actually is since its entirely possible that he'd just reached his limit for Bullshit He'd Put Up With that night and went off at the next annoyance.

  • Apathetic

Aside from just being even tempered, Deimos has a tendency to be very apathetic. This can be frowned upon because it just means that he doesn't really participate in the world. There's no real benefit for people higher than him that might use someone to push around- and no assistance for anyone lower than him because he just doesn't care. Apathy keeps Deimos from really making use of himself and is probably one of his bigger flaws.

Weapon: A big ol' steel staff with a sphere on the end. Picture reference here [Note: This is an old version of Deimos- he used to be purple blooded and missing limbs >___> haha]

Appearance:
Behold, a doodle in this post to sum this up but in essence:
Deimos has a perpetual case of bedhead and eye bags that last for days- he almost always looks some level of tired and usually wears a deadpan expression. Clothing wise, his outfits are based entirely on comfort. Baggy shirts, soft pants (sometimes just shorts), and whatever socks he can easily put on (usually not from the same pair). If he actually wears shoes, they're always slip-ons, he'd rather not deal with laces.

Home:
Deimos lives in the Forest, or rather, on the outskirts of the forest. His hive is modestly sized, two stories and is cylindrical in shape. His bedroom has no windows at all, he prefers it that way. The hive itself is a disorganized mess... Although Deimos would call it organized chaos. He knows where most things are, he's just too apathetic to clean up most of the time. The second floor is where he keeps most of his books and mapmaking supplies- he hardly lets anyone up there. There's one balcony on the second floor that he uses for stargazing- its laden with pillows and blankets so that he can be extra comfy while he stares at the sky.

Lusus:
Deimos does care deeply for his lusus even if he doesn't vocalize it often. Thypion resembles a 2-headed thylacine but has the added nastiness of a scorpion's tail just in case the two heads weren't enough reason to back off. On outings when Deimos is particularly lacking in sleep, he usually tries to wrestle the beast into carrying a pack bag large enough for him to crawl into - that way he doesn't have to deal with drool all over his clothes if he passes out... Gross.

His dad is usually fairly even tempered, much like himself, but if it senses any sort of threat he quickly looses its cool - Deimos is not particularly the best at getting him to calm down again, instead he usually stands back and watches until he wears himself out, unless he thinks he's going to ruin his stuff or something. Then he cares a little.

Just coming through with a few crits. Most of them are quick, easy fixes!

First off: be careful with indicating prior NPC involvement. Kids start out without any formative relationships (aside from their lusus). Currently you've got a couple mentions of a specific high-blood in there.

The two paragraphs on the lusus you have in the “Profile” part of the application can be bumped down to the “Lusus” portion. (Easy-peasy, like I said!)

For his "Critical" trait: does he tend to be judgemental in this regard? I just want to make sure.

Finally, there's the matter of Deimos' loner attitude. Loners are welcome in Hivestuck (of course), but to make things easier on yourself for RP you should have some kind of trick to getting him out and socialising. We don't want him locked up in his hive the whole time because he hates people.

And that's it! He's adorable!

(Also A+ name. Deimos has been the name of every computer I've owned since 1999.)

After another set of eyes I’d say he looks great! One thing to remember is that too much sleep outside of sopor slime will eventually cause brightmares, which is something that Deimos may have to deal with if he’s prone to accidentally falling asleep wherever due to exhaustion. You’ve already got a lot of consideration put into how his sleeplessness affects his mental state, so I just wanted to remind you about this posibility. Nothing actually needs to be re-written, so he’s good to go!
