Hit points: 25 Damage: 5 each time attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory. Time to implement the plan yet again; thin down the ranks of the birds to make other actions easier, or at least ensure that there were fewer birds, or maybe just up the chances of actually coming out of this with something he could actually use. Of course his swing wasn't solid, didn't hit the bird as completely as he wanted it to, but it hit, and that was all he could really ask for anymore. Consistently hitting. He was almost used to the way the bird took a piece of his coat with it as it caught him. HP: 50 Bird: 25

And again, the same kind of hit, maybe a little more solid, but it did the same amount of damage. Mal swore at the bird as it clipped him; not a cut this time but a stinging buffet with one wing that left him reeling backward, and his shoulder a full ache under the suit jacket and increasingly tattered fur coat.
HP: 45
Bird: 22 - 3 = 19

The buffet from the bird's wing must have still had him off; he slipped in the snow, now mostly slush from his work against the birds that he'd killed so far, and landed on his butt. Of course. And he managed not to hit the bird at all.

And then, trying to scramble up as the bird glided down for another attempt, probably thinking (did birds think? did these birds think?) that Mal looked like a tempting target on his butt in the snow, Mal slipped again. He didn't even try to attempt hitting the bird this time; he just took the second stinging buffet with a big wing and used it to at least try to get to his feet.

And this time the buffet helped him, let him roll up and out of the snow and actually hit the bird that had come down at him. Not a great hit, but solidly in the good category. At this point Mal was just glad no one had seen him go to his butt in the snow.

This one was worse than the last-- but at least it wasn't him slipping in the snow and falling in it again. Mal thanked his lucky (small) stars for that much, and flinched a little at the hot sting of a feather's edge.

xelhaspixiestix HP: 20 Bird: 10 - 12 = DED And this swing made up for the last couple-- less swing, more 'chop', since it separated head from body and left the bird twitching and thrashing in the snow. Mal watched it die and decided, even if they could get the smell out, he was still going to burn this suit.

Mal examined a shirt cuff (bloody) and used a handful of snow on his still-stinging cheek before he went back toward the hotel door. Definitely burning the suit. Hestia would probably object to him using the hearth for it, though, so he'd have to find a fireplace of some kind.
