Shortly after they returned to the lodge with Nicolas in tow, Beth lost track of Cat. Which was fine, except now Beth could count on one hand how many people she knew. She was sure that Cat had her own goals, here on the mountain, but it was far easier to keep her composure with someone else around. There were so many opportunities to help, so many needs to be met, that it made it difficult to triage effectively. All of Beth's expertise fell in the realm of parties and shopping trips and catalogs of items. Not people bleeding or trying to find family members or fighting off birds. She couldn't even imagine going out into the snow once, much less multiple times, with the intent to murder some avian prey.

But she knew people who did just that. Who had braved the snow with her to find a little old man. Who had, in all honesty, allowed them to return unscathed.

It took some time, but Beth managed to scrounge up a bowl, a spoon, a can of soup, and a place to heat it. Never mind that it took precious time away from helping those sheltering in the lodge on the whole. Sometimes, it was all one could do to help individuals. Holding the bowl of rapidly cooling soup in her mittens, Beth searched the ground floor for Cat, hoping that she could find her new friend before the soup lost all of its heat.

Awwwwe, Beth is such a sweet little dumpling! emotion_kirakira So sorry this was so delayed- I was inundated with family visiting (which is nice, but definitely limits my ability to rp)! emotion_facepalm

Catherine couldn’t remember the last time she’d been this exhausted. Staying up late had nothing on the whirlwind day she’d had. She would not- in a million years- have guessed when she woke up this morning that her day would include an ominous summoning, walking through fire, being assaulted by birds of legend, fortifying a besieged Swiss hotel, shooting down several of the strange birds, and rescuing an old man to be reunited with his wife.

She’d met so many more of the Chosen she hadn’t spoken with before and she felt a stronger kinship with them than she would have expected given their varied backgrounds and personalities. But it was a great thing to feel so connected to this mish-mash group of heroes, and she supposed she could even be considered one too after all she had accomplished today.

But the miracle of the strength she had managed to summon throughout the course of this adventure was fading and after having rescued Nicolas with Beth she was truly done for. The adrenaline rush had abandoned her once they’d returned to the hotel and she had slumped against a wall in the lobby, legs stretched out in front of her and too tired even to move until she saw a familiar face approaching- and was that the faint, mouth-watering smell of beef and barley soup she could detect? She was roused from her daze enough then to wave meekly with a smile.

Beth paused, stumbling into Cat in the lobby--literally. It took the same coordination that allowed her to walk in platforms and heels to make sure she didn't spill a drop of her precious cargo. Face breaking into a smile, Beth beamed down at Cat. "I've been looking for you!" She gently held the bowl aloft. "I brought you some soup!" Delicately, she settled onto one knee, holding out one hand to steady her as she pulled her legs beneath her, tucking her feet to the side. Producing a spoon from her pocket, she held them out to Cat. "Sorry if you don't like it, I-I just found whatever I could. And it's not that hot--I guess it would have been smarter if I ran and got you and heated it up then but," she trailed off, frowning a bit as she realized her error. Perking up, she continued, "I thought you might need something to warm up! I heard you went out a bunch before I kind of--snagged you. So here! On behalf of Dotty and Nicolas!"

Cat winced, thinking for sure that Beth was going to end up splayed across the floor, but to her great relief and surprise, she managed to regain her balance with more grace than Cat would have thought possible. She laughed lightly, “I’ve been slumped here pretty much since the rescue!”

She waved Beth’s words away as she accepted the soup, “I love it, really. Thank you.” She downed several heaping spoonfuls of the soup as Beth spoke, it was probably best the soup wasn’t scalding hot or she would have burned her tongue. She finished another spoonful with a nod before replying, “Yeah, I’ve been out there a few times today. Took down a bird on my own and a small flock of them with another archer when a blockade needed repairing. I’m just so worn out - this soup is doing wonders though. I think this is the first thing I’ve eaten since breakfast…”

Beth waved it away. "It was the least I could do to thank you for your help!" She said, beaming with happiness that she could render her a kindness.

Beth’s eyes grew large as she listened to Cat think nothing of going out into the cold, wet snow and saving lives--striking down enemies with her bow and arrows. She had seen only a fraction of Cat’s amazing talent on the battlefield, but she could imagine what a sight Cat would be in a real tussle against their feathery foes. ”That's soooo brave of you!” She squealed, stars practically beaming from her eyes. ”I can't even fathom the idea of going back out there once, much less multiple times. Did you used to do things like this a lot? I mean...before...this?” She meant before being Chosen, but found she couldn't quite speak the words. It seemed too much like admitting their lives were different now, wholly new and irrevocably severed from what had come before. She didn't know if she was ready to acknowledge it as real.

Cat almost sputtered her soup all over the floor, Beth’s admiration was just too much. She could feel herself blush from her neck to the top of her head, “Oh no, it’s really … I mean … I’m not that great an archer. I miss or barely hit something just as often as I actually solidly strike the damn things. I was in an archery club in college and have kind of kept up the practice just because I love it and it keeps me fit. This whole hitting moving, not to mention flying, targets is totally new to me - I never even went hunting before being Chosen.”

She looked down into her soup, she’d always found it hard to accept praise, she just … felt there was always room for improvement, or at least that it was a given she should be doing everything and anything to the best of her ability. She’d been raised with high expectations and they’d been transferred down to her, where others might see an excellent essay, she’d obsess over having missed a grammatical error or a missing comma. She nervously took another spoonful of soup and hoped she could divert the attention away from herself, “How about you, what were you up to before all of … this … went down?”

Beth watched Cat blush and sputter, finding that she liked the effect it had on the other girl. Modesty was sometimes a most attractive trait, though she herself knew the dangers of being too humble so as to disappear. It was why, when she found such loveliness in others, she was determined to praise it to the high heavens. 'Should I be using To Olympus? Are we at that point?' She wondered to herself.

Out loud, she said, "Well, you're certainly doing better than I would. I'm more liable to hit myself in the face or drop the arrow completely!" She paused. "Daddy always says recruit the talent, train the skill. So you must have some talent." She tried to subtly look Cat over for an obvious favor, indicating which god had Chosen her. The bow and arrow said Artemis. Or maybe Apollo. But the thoughtful nature said Athena or perhaps Zeus. She didn't seem like a Chosen of Hermes or Dionysus and while she supposed Cat could have been a rather tempered Ares Chosen, that didn't seem quite right.

But then again, she had always struggled to make assumptions and observations about others. She had no idea what kind of person Cat really was. But she was excited to find out.

Beth sighed, as if talking about herself was the last thing she wanted to do. "Little old me? Well, I was attending the University of Washington, just finished my Comprehensive Lit degree," she paused, unable to stifle the giggle that escaped as she thought of the joke in the title. "I was...going on to study museum management. Still working through some of the prereq's, you know." She laughed out and out, this time. "I think some museum would kill to have this kind of interactive exhibit." It wasn't that funny of a joke and her own laughter petered out almost as quickly as she said it.

You want to wrap up the thread? Feel free to have Cat fall asleep in your post. whee

Cat nodded; she could accept that she had some talent for archery and would just need more training to realize her full potential, and if the mess outside was a common occurrence then she would certainly be getting the requisite experience. She smiled and accepted the compliment with a soft, “Thank you,” as she finished off the last of the bowl of soup.

Now that she had a full stomach, weariness was truly setting in. It was that warm content feeling of fullness that can so easily lull one to sleep if you aren’t active after eating- and Cat certainly had no desire to keep pushing herself to the limit tonight. In fact, she would be needing her sleep if she was going to be of any use tomorrow, and there was still so much to be done.

She tried to keep her focus on Beth as she was answering Cat’s question, but sleepy blinks kept drawing her focus away. She did chuckle at Beth’s comment though, “Yeah, they could have actual Stymphalian Birds on display. Don’t know if it would still be considered a Greek antiquity though, you know, if they’re still around and terrorizing people.” She couldn’t help it, despite fighting sleep a great yawned escaped from her then. “Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, do you want to see if we can find one of the empty rooms and try continuing our conversation there? I’m just really going to need to sleep soon and would rather already be in a bed I can crash on than falling asleep on the floor.” She began grabbing up her things with a sleepy smile, handing the bowl and spoon to Beth, “Would you be able to take these with us? I don’t want to make you carry dishes, I just don’t have hands for it with the pack and bow.”

Beth nodded, knowing the feeling of weariness well. She practically wriggled at the idea of having a roommate--she didn't have one at the Prytaneum, and while there were certainly upsides to it, there was a terrible loneliness to the room. "Sure, we can stake our claim somewhere! Do you have a preference? Outside room with a terrace? Or an inside room with a garden tub?" It was half of a joke. She knew which one she would take, what with the birds flying around outside and occasionally inside when they attacked a wall enough to collapse it. But beggers couldn't be choosers, so when they found an abandoned room with reasonably secure walls and windows, she took it.

There wasn't much conversation after that. Once Cat's head hit the pillow, slumber seemed to follow almost immediately. It took Beth some time to get comfortable. The pants didn't allow for much movement and Beth hated sleeping with socks on, but the cold in the room required it. She was in the same predicament with her puffy jacket. She knew she was going to sweat, but just unzipping it left her shivering.

It was awhile before she felt safe and comfortable to slip into sleep. She was consoled by the sound of Cat breathing evenly from the other bed.
