(Rolling for how hurt (1-10) the person is.)

Jan was not a doctor. This was a self evident truth, he had never learned how to look after the most arrogant of primates in the depth typically expected for their care. Instead he'd learned how to care for animals in a variety of shapes and sizes, with different species traits, allergies and intolerances. But when it came to superficial cuts and scrapes, the care did not vary a great deal. What was good enough for a cat or a dog would on the whole be perfectly suitable for a wounded human.

Right now the main concern was keeping various cuts and scrapes clean and he at least could help with that. Some supplies had been brought and it was these he fished out as he made his way over to a group of people who'd been staying at the hotel when the birds had struck. Most of them seemed shaken, a little pale and nervous looking as it generally went.

He stood up straight, confident and calm and tried to exude an air of authority.

"It's fine." he said. "I'm a doctor." And in the strictly diploma sense he was. Still, he could see the expressions visibly relax and he had no real intention to exploit their trust. He simply wanted to prevent there being a need to waste antibiotics on these people later when their injuries got infected.

His first "patient" was a little girl. Her injury was minor, a small scrape from the bird's talons which would no doubt heal up just fine, still he was careful to reassure her that she'd be fine and to make some jokes about the birds, coaxing a laugh out of her as she informed him her favourite birds were penguins and that they could beat up the mean birds which had attacked her. She got her wound cleaned up, a band aid and a smile and he tried very hard not to think about his own daughter as he moved away. She'd only just been old enough to start really coming into her personality and now she'd have just her mother to keep her and her brother safe from.. well from the people like him in the world and they'd all seen how that turned out.

And now the monsters. The monsters were a concern too.

Once Jan lapsed into thinking about something it was always difficult to pull himself back out of that spiral. He'd been avoiding thinking about Melody at all since he'd left his family behind and hopped on a plane out of the country but when he least wanted it it crept up on him, reminding him that somewhere there were parts of him growing up unchecked and without guidance, able to simply turn into whatever his vindictive exes wanted to make them. They'd always just know him as the man who left them, who abandoned them and wouldn't even pay child support. They'd be raised on exaggerated stories about the horrible man he was and forget little by little the time he'd spend feeding them as a baby, changing nappies, helping them learn to walk. They'd forget him and remember only the shape of him carved anew by bitter and vindictive parents.

It was hard not to be a little bitter as he left the little girl behind, turning his attention to another group who were in a more dire strait than the previous one. Someone had made a makeshift tourniquet out of a bedsheet and wrapped it around their friend's shoulder to stem the bleeding. Making some space and getting as sterile equipment as he could muster he set about unwrapping the deep gouge and disinfecting it. It was deep enough that it warranted stitches and he carefully and meticulously stitched it up for the man, who to his credit flinched only minimally. He took off his gloves and dropped them into a nearby wastebin. "I'll have another look at it tommorow, in the meantime, painkillers and don't get hurt again."

It was like donning an old mask, except here instead of sending people off with a stitched and mended pet it was a stitched and mended friend. To many people the difference was minimal, the main difference was an animal didn't complain quite so much and was probably in the long run a lot more grateful.

He spent the next hour or so blindly going from one group to another and offering his services, snapping on a new pair of gloves for each task and directing his level focus towards the task at hand. It was relaxing in its way and passed a significant amount of time easily. Even superficially batting comments back at people and evading concerns felt easy and comfortable for him. It was being social and being social was a gain in itself as it warmed other people to his presence.

Still, there were only so many injuries and he was not the only one who was helping out. All too soon there was no one left to tend to and he was left at a loss with what else to do. People withdrew to talk amongst themselves and once again he felt like he was an outsider. The people in the hotel even after the help they'd been provided were still wary of the Chosen and he didn't really blame them.

He hung around for a while before finally slinking back off upstairs to get out from underfoot.
