Quote: This opponent should be fought with at least a team of 3, and must be fought outside the hotel. The sky above you is darkened by the flutter of a large number of wings: a mass of the metallic birds that hit against each other in their attempts to be the first to attack you. There are too many to fight alone, and you are glad to have allies at your side. They attack by launching their feathers at you or by flinging their poisonous dung.Hit points: 100 Damage: 5 each time they are attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-40: You fought a hard battle well, and gain an extra 5XP! 41-60: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 61-80: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 81-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory. The swarms outside the hotel had seemed to grow--an especially large one had taken a spot near the west exit--and Marisol had kept an eye on it. Where she had hoped it would fly away, it stayed, and she was becoming increasingly worried. This end of the hotel seemed weaker than the others, there was a nasty crack in the window she was watching them from and she was concerned they'd try to break it in. With that, Marisol had gone around and asked for volunteers to fight off the damn things. She just wished asking hadn't automatically volunteered herself but it was too late to back out now. It wasn't that she was scared but the last venture at fighting them had been way too close for comfort. Which is why she'd insisted there was at least three of them. She was not going to see this fight go badly and if it did, she was forcing them all to run like hell for back-up. Turning to the two who had offered to go with, "You ready for this?" she asked. The whip was clutched tightly in her hand and she placed her hand on the door. Please let this go better than last time. Marisol's Health: 50 - 3 (Ranged) = 47 HP Initiative: 9 + 15 = 24

Mal had volunteered for it. Of course Mal had. Mal was beginning to question his own sanity when it came to this kind of thing. Why was he throwing himself into yet another fight? Fortifying the hotel had been just fine, and not that hard a thing to do, and it had multiple benefits. Throwing himself into the path of the big, ugly birds? Again? Not so smart. But he made sure his glasses were put away inside the inner pocket of his suit coat, under the increasingly damaged fur coat he was already wearing, to make sure he wasn't going to lose them. Breaking them was better than losing them, honestly. "Ready when you are." He, at least, sounded steady, and like he thought Marisol had had a good plan when she'd asked them to go out and do this. Some kind of maintenance clearing out of the birds could only help them in the long run. Mal's Health: 50 Initiative: 16

The increase amount of squawking had made Mathilda go outside. Going outside made her volunteer herself, and now here she was. Birds, birds, birds, how she hates these birds. Mathilda glanced around at Marisol and Mal, grinning as she tossed her dagger in the air. She grinned at Mal's response. "Right back at ya!" Mathilda's Health: 50 Initiative: 2

It looked like she was up first. Wonderful. With a slow approach, so not to unsettle the swarm all at once, Marisol got just close enough to be in range. There wasn't much to do with this many birds but to attack and hope to hell, she managed to do some damage. Arm pulled back, she quickly flicked it forward and watched as the whip collided into the birds, a crack sounding as the leather hit. She didn't miss the attack they threw at her; nor did she miss the sting of the metal feather as it poked at her through the fur coat. But she had her own metal feather and she damn well was going to use it if she needed to. She really hoped she wouldn't. Marisol's Health: 47 - 5 = 42 HP Bird's Health: 100 - (100% x 4) = 96 HP

Mal spilled out of the door behind Marisol; he was pleased when he actually managed to hit at least one of the birds. They were a pain in the a**, and he didn't manage to jerk back away from a wing that swept out and caught him-- Crap. Pretty soon his coat was going to be in tatters, and then eventually he was going to be in tatters. He knew it wasn't all the coat; some of it, most of it, was Zeus's protection, but thinking that still made him shiver and remember a voice with too much vigor coming from the mouth of a dead man. Not a great set of thoughts for battle. Mal's Health: 50 - 5 = 45 Swarm HP: 96 - 6 = 90

Mathilda grinned as she slowly stepped forward, arm raised. Before she could let go of the blade, however, one of the birds swiped at her. The little jerk had been resting on the edge of the doorframe and saw the perfect time to strike. Scowling, the blonde twirled the blade and launched it at the bird. Cursing as the blade only hit the edge of the birds wing, Mathilda picked up he blade and quickly moved away. "How is everyone doing? Besides a bit banged up." Mathilda's Health: 45 Swarm HP: 88

"Oh, you know, I went shopping and had a spa day. I even got a massage!" she joked, before turning serious. "Any fondness I had for birds... I think I'm well past it now." Which wasn't exactly true. She still liked the symbolism of specific birds but she no longer had any desire to ever see or own a bird. In fact, she might get half a dozen cats just to make sure no birds ever set one toe near her again. The motion of swinging the whip over her head seemed to draw the birds' attention as well as spook them back. Using it to her advantage, she lunged forward and brought her arm down quickly, whacking a few of the birds in the chest as they failed to back out of the way. She glanced at the two allies she had. "The moment either of you think we need help, or to retreat, let me know," she advised. "These battles can get dicey." Marisol's Health: 42 - 5 = 37 HP Bird's Health: 88 - (100% x 4) = 84 HP

"I don't know if they're actually birds, or if they just look like birds." Mal swung again at the swarm; there were too many moving bodies and parts for him to be able to aim at anything specific. Even if he had a gun (and again he mourned not having one) he'd just be firing blindly into the biggest mass of them. "I mean--" He grunted as the edge of his sword bit into a wing, and yanked it back viciously when a bird-thing caught his sleeve again. It still didn't bite in, the God's protection was still working, but -- All the same. "--there are dozens of myths of things looking like one thing and being another, right?" Mathilda laughed at Marisol's response. She hissed as a bird scratched her hand, and twirled away, landing near Mal. "And I agree. If anyone needs to leave, we all leave." Jumping back as Mal swung his sword. she spoke again. "I don't care whether they're real or whatever. I hate these birds!" She moved toward the birds and threw her dagger. The blade snagged the bird and she retrieved the blade. "Anyone have any items on them?" Mathlda's Health: 40 Swarm HP: 81 - 4 = 77

Malcolm was right; she remembered many childhood tales about changelings. She wasn't sure if it mattered, at least, not at the moment. They looked like birds, sounded like birds. For whatever reason, if they weren't what they appeared as, they were in the guise of birds and that was enough. "Maybe they aren't birds but changelings," she admitted. "It doesn't change that I hate them." The aim of her whip was off as she targeted an overgrown bronze beak that was about to try ripping into her fur coat. It smacked into the bird's eye instead and squawked, indignant, before wheeling backwards. "A metal feather from one's of these bird's cousin, actually," she told the duo, responding to Mathilda. "I imagine I'll only get one chance to use it and I'd rather not use it to soon." She hadn't exactly mastered throwing objects yet. "What about you two?" Mal grunted as he swung and missed and a beak snagged him, dragging him further off balance. He jerked away and steadied himself, taking a fast, deep breath. "No items. Sorry, ladies. I'm not usually this badly prepared." There were a lot of birds, too. And they weren't doing too well against the swarm, in Mal's opinion, although -- although maybe. Maybe they could manage it. It came down to a lot of maybes in his opinion, though. Mal's Health: 40 - 5 = 35 Swarm HP: 75 - 0 = 75

"Well, I have poisonous poop, and I ain't afraid to use it." Mathilda dodged a bird as a another sliced her leg. Jumping back, she moved back towards Mal and Marisol. "These birds aren't easy to fight. I'm not saying we should be worried, but we should calm down, steel ourselves." Breathing deeply, she threw her dagger. Mal's Health: 35 Swarm HP:75 - 4 - 71

A curse stuck in her throat as the whip seemed to glance off one of the bird's wings and she began to wonder if there were enough of them to fight off this swarm. She was about to say something when the same bird made a bee line for her--without even considering it, she pulled the metal feather from where it had been hiding, waiting, and shoved it deep into the bird's chest. That was one down; it was also one less weapon. "Anyone got a friend who might come running to help if they scream real loud?" she asked. At this rate they weren't doing great. It wasn't terrible but there was definitely some concern. "We can do this, just don't panic," she added. She didn't want them to think she didn't believe in them or herself. However she definitely wasn't kidding about the friend; any help would be good help. Marisol's Health: 32 - 5 = 27 HP Bird's Health: 71 - (50% x 4) - 2 (Metal Feather) = 67 HP

"Unfortunately, I think most of mine are busy right now." Mal grimaced, but it was somewhat apologetic all the same. He dove after the bird following the one that had gone after Marisol and hit it solidly with his sword. More solidly than he had expected to; it still surprised him sometimes, that he was doing things like this. Things like using an actual sword, battling birds that were possibly made out of metal, in the service of gods and goddesses that had been worshiped thousands of years ago. Protected by, chosen by, one of those same gods and goddesses. Sometimes he didn't think this was any kind of reward. Sometimes he figured it was probably a kind of penance for the missteps he'd made during his life, or for what had happened with Finn. Mal's Health: 35 - 5 = 30 Swarm HP: 67 - 6 = 61

Mathilda grimmaced as a bird snagged her pant leg, knocking her slightly off balance. Repositioning herself, she responded to the group. "Hopefully someone will walk by. I'm sure we can beat these, but I'd rather not be incapacitated for later fights." Letting another bird get close, she gripped her dagger in both hands, planning to not the chest of the bird.
