Quote: This enemy can be fought solo! A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung. Hit points: 25 Damage: 5 each time attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Lawrence found that killing the birds had become an enjoyable pastime which kept him busy and substituted for exercise while exercise was limited. He figured the more adept he was at fighting the creatures, the more safe he'd be if it came to running into more of them down the line. It was a combination of research and safety which just so happened to also make it look like he was a concerned individual out to help the group as a whole.
It was generally win-win.
So he'd taken to hunting them down, dagger in hand, looking for the rooms which had been sealed off due to a breach in the windows, when he found one that morning he made sure no one else was around and slipped in.
The bird got the jump on him, but with a sharp intake of air, he made sure both of them came out of it about as badly as each other.

It was back into the twisting thrashing struggle of a fight and Jan's heart kicked up a notch. Numbed emotionally so much of the time it was a satisfying substitute going up against the birds. It was close to life and death, close to something he found important.
Killing made him feel like a god, like he transcended the reach of everything.
And he intended to kill this one too.

The pain itself as always was another layer of satisfaction for the pale man, much like adrenaline it was a suitable emotional substitute and when heightened was enough to make him believe that he was capable of feeling things in any depth at all.
The fact that even after killing two he didn't have a single scratch, only the memory of pain simply spurred him to keep going. It didn't matter if the things were truly alive either, the satisfaction from making them stop moving entirely was all the same to him.

Traction was easy to gain in the enclosed space, at an advantage from the word go. The bird's wingspan was too broad and the space too small to gain any real aerial advantage over its small ground bound assailant. Jan moved like an intent cat, keeping low and leaping unsuspected to lash out with the blade.
He'd learned from previous battles that it was important to slash the primary wing feathers early in the fight and he did that now, throwing the already erratic flight of the bird off kilter even more, looking to have it stay grounded and to go from there.

The bird didn't bother trying to fly again after its failed flight due to the mangled feathers, instead it took a stand on the bed, fluffing its feathers threateningly and rounding on Jan as best it could. He knew it was finished before he even swung and savoured the moment of power, the satisfaction between life and death, between a creature staring at him and a creature unmoving.
It wasn't easy by any means, he was breathless and in no small degree of pain, but all of that was just fine with him, just fine with him in every single way.
The dagger wasn't a sword but that was better for him, closer and more intimate, the only thing better would be if the blade was affixed like talons to his hands and he could feel the moment through his grip.
He swung and struck the neck and it was over.

There was nothing much gained from the corpse but he took it with him regardless.
