This opponent is difficult solo, and pairs are suggested!

A small swarm of birds spot you and swoop in like they're of one mind to attack. Their bronze beaks glint wickedly, and their metallic feathers catch the sunlight. They attack by launching these feathers or by flinging their poisonous dung.

Hit points: 60
Damage: 5 damage each time they are attacked.

If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 15XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following:

1-60: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent.
61-75: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
76-90: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever.
91-100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

Erica had her hood up as she stood near the entrance of the hotel, trying to get a better look at the birds without exposing herself to their attacks. They were metal, that was for sure based on the feathers that had come raining down, and their dung was poisonous, but she had yet to get her hands on a complete bird.

Glancing around the hotel lobby, she looked for someone tall. Given her relative lack of height (not that she felt disadvantaged), someone taller than her was just good strategy since they would always be hit first.

She quickly picked out a tall, dark blond man out of the crowd. Approaching with her axe swinging at her side, she tried to discern whether he had an major injuries. He looked like he had already been fighting the birds. Commanding with all the confidence of someone who didn't care what other people thought, she simply said, "Birds aren't going to kill themselves; if you're not badly injured let's go."

Without waiting for a reply, she headed outside.

Brian had just returned inside for a moment's rest after his incident with the particularly ravenous metal bird. He had decided to help patch up the window the creature had flown through and then there was a young woman bidding him to come. At first he wasn't sure what she was going to ask; she was, after all, very small. Her voice was different, though. Her voice commanded attention.

She did not so much ask him to come as tell him he was coming. Even if she hadn't he might have felt obligated to go with her, knowing how violent the birds could get when they were close to death. She was confident, though, and carried an axe. Certainly there were worse things. Besides, he was feeling a bi more confident himself now that he'd taken one of the metal goliaths down.

He grinned to the woman and jogged out after her, wiping a bit of blood out of his forehead. He had felt it leaking, but a still it was only scratches. Thank Zeus for his protection. All of the people in the hotel who had fought the creatures seemed much worse for wear.

The man cast his eyes to the sky and spotted a small swarm of the birds gearing up for an attack.

"There," he said, pointing for only a moment before he drew an arrow to fight back against the onslaught of silvery feathers. It hit home.

Just as quickly as Brian sent an arrow flying, Erica was reaching back and then flinging her axe forward overhand; it spun once as it carved out a dangerous path in the air. Almost as quickly as she had thrown the axe, she was bursting forward to follow the trajectory of its flight and retrieve it when it returned to the ground.

The heavy axe was slower than an arrow though and while the arrow hit true, the birds managed to dodge her axe.

She grimaced but took up the axe again, already taking aim for her next shot, determined to throw it with more force.

Throwing axes? This place was insane. A bow was one thing, but managing the arc and weight of a thrown weapon was something else entirely. He noted that it wasn't so much that this tiny girl had missed so much as the birds had moved around his arrow and away from her attack. Huh!

He fired another arrow into the fray and muttered a curse when he missed.

Erica watched the taller man take his shot before taking her own, careful, this time, to aim where the birds would scatter away from his shot.

This strategy proved fruitful as her axe spun then hit the birds before coming back down.

Brian fired again, this time suffering the same fate as his partner. He huffed and took aim but waited rather than acting on impulse. He wasn't quite used to this two-on-three style of combat. At least that was what he told himself as he took aim and waited for his partner to recover and throw her weapon.

Erica lined up her shot with a quick glance at her partner and then launched her axe into the air. Her face was dark and determined as she ran to meet the axe.

She picked up her axe with a thrill of satisfaction despite the spray of metal feathers raining down, slicing at the few parts of her body left exposed.

The wait was worth it... sort of. His partner seemed to have gone a little mad, and it looked like she had that bird fairly under-control, never mind the fact that he didn't particularly feel like accidentally glancing off of her with an arrow. He turned instead to the rest of the swarm and fired at a bird, finally striking it hard.

The spray of metal feathers stung even though they were being protected by their gods and goddesses. Sending another axe flying, Erica ducked away from another volley of feathers and dung, frowning as the axe came down without hitting a single bird.

She hated when something she undertook didn't turn out the way she wanted it to.

How long would the protection spells last, Brian wondered? Clearly they were less hurt than they should be, but he was fairly certain everyone was still mortal. Frankly the poo bothered him more than the bladed feathers at this point, although he imagined that if the two mixed there would be trouble. He loosed another arrow and struck a glancing blow off of a half0distracted bird.

Erica was totally silent in her concentration. She wasn't the type to roar, or make any noise at all, in her determination. She launched her axe up and watched its path while she ran.

She smiled, a small harsh thing, when the axe smacked a bird in its wing.

When/if he hits 2 HP, he's out. xD;

He'll happily go back out, though. Perhaps after a bit of recruiting. He's potentially going out to battle with Cat next (after PRP) but I'm sure Erica could tag along too.

While she respected the bird's abilities to dodge their attacks and return them, the sting of failure was starting to prickle at her limbs. She wasn't used to failing at things that she put effort into. She was used to being competent; it was one of the things that she took the most pride in.

Same for Erica! That would be awesome! I might have another monster fight lined up depending on who finishes up their monster threads, but if Erica's free, I'd love to have her tag along!

Another miss. These things were harder to hit than he'd imagined! He glanced at his partner. It seemed like they were outnumbered. Their chances for success were suddenly dimmed. He was all for fighting until it hurt, but sometimes you just had to accept that things weren't going to go your way.

"What do you think?" he shouted over the screeching and the flapping. At least he wasn't the only idiot missing his shots.

The battle was starting to take a turn for the worse. No amount of protection from their gods could change the fact that poisonous dung and metal feathers flying in your face impaired your movement and vision.
