Quote: This enemy can be fought solo! A lone bird spots you and glides in to attack. As you get close to it, you notice that while it's the size and rough shape of an eagle, it's not at all natural: its beak is made of bronze and its feathers are metallic and razor sharp. It attacks by launching feathers at you, or flinging its poisonous dung. Hit points: 25 Damage: 5 each time attacked If you successfully kill this bird, each party involved in the battle gets 10XP and rolls 1d100 to collect loot according to the following: 1-80: You gain nothing but the victory of having beaten this opponent. 81-90: Poisonous Dung: You manage to collect a vial of the vile stuff. It can thrown at an opponent once to poison them, dealing 1 damage for 3 turns. After this it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 91-99: Heart's Blood: You manage to collect a vial of the creature's blood. It can be used once to replenish 3 HP, at which point it is consumed and leaves your inventory forever. 100: Metal Feather: Once per battle, you can backstab with this small dagger. Add 2 to your final damage. This item is reusable, and remains in your inventory.

It wasn't that he was hunting for birds, but he was hunting for birds. The first one had been a thrill unlike anything he'd felt in a long long time and he was currently sanctioned to fight and butcher the birds that assailed them. It had been a struggle between life and death and he'd enjoyed it.
So this time he deliberately found a room which had been sealed off to keep the bird inside and had a note taped to the door and decided he was going to make it safe for someone to go into. It made him look heroic when he was anything but.
It sprung him from on top of a wardrobe and he drew his dagger and lashed out at its talons.

This time he was more prepared for the struggles and the way the bird would fight back and was also more aware of what would get him really maimed if he did it, like trying to go anywhere near the legs with anything but a dagger between him and their flailing claws.
There were still a few times where he nearly hit himself with the dagger as much as the bird itself.

This bird was smarter than the other, quicker to fly away and hide and more prone to ambushes. Taking him by surprise as he tried to reach the top of the wardrobe (curse his diminutive stature) the bird sunk its talons into his scalp and pulled him to the floor.
He hissed and pain and twisted like a cat to fight back against the thing.

But like a cat, he could play that game also, moving to pull himself under the bed and stay there for a moment or two until the flapping wings stopped. He pulled himself out from underneath very very slowly and leapt, digging the dagger right into one of the creature's wings. It let out a squawk, flapped once, twice and resorted to staying on the ground instead and pecking him.

He knew it was ailing but even wounded the bird was entirely capable of messing him up if he wasn't careful, capable of some very serious peck and claw wounds. Most of his attention was focused on keeping it well away from his face as much as was humanly possible. He didn't want any of the sharp bits anywhere near his face.
Still, there was a strong sense of impending death and Lawrence was addicted to it, he knew he was going to win, at this point it was just a matter of when.

This bird was killed off with a little more finesse than the first, leaving its head intact. Again he victoriously bundled it up and snuck off with it, still high on adrenaline. This was becoming a bit of an addiction, if he was honest.
