Affection and How It Works
Affection Ranks and Benefits:
Affection between a trainer and their Pokémon has a number of different effects in the guild. There are five ranks of affection that can be achieved, with each rank bestowing more power to the Pokémon in question. Below are the ranks and the respective effects they have:
- Rank One - A new HM slot is unlocked for the Pokémon.
Rank Two - A new TM slot is unlocked for the Pokémon.
Rank Three - The Pokémon can use moves a tier above its evolutionary stage limit.
Rank Four - A new Move Tutor slot is unlocked for the Pokémon.
Rank Five - The Pokémon's Hidden Ability is permanently unlocked. If you reach this rank with an Eevee, this will allow it to evolve into a Sylveon. This rank also will allow you to control traded level Pokémon with only three badges as opposed to the usual four.
Most of these effects are self explanatory, but here is a more in depth description of the rank three effect. As noted in the moves and abilities section of the trainer school, Pokémon have certain power limits on what attacks they can learn based on their evolutionary stage. By reaching rank three affection however, you allow your Pokémon to learn attacks one stage above their usual limit.
For example, this would allow a first stage Pokémon like Bulbasaur to use moves with a base power of 100-120. This would naturally unlock Double Edge for it as it's in Bulbasaurs natural Gen Six move pool, as well as Solarbeam which is in its Gen Three move pool. This is a good way for trainers to strengthen Pokémon that they don't want to evolve.
Raising and Recording Affection
Interacting with your Pokémon:
Affection can be raised by playing with your Pokémon in certain areas of the guild or by treating them to tasty meals at the various restaurants scattered throughout the region. Pokémon also gain affection upon completing jobs in which they participated in. Grooming Kits can also be purchased from the Poké Marts to boost affection even further.
Feeding your Pokémon:
Candy, Poképuffs, and other treats also boost affection when fed to your Pokémon. They are commonly distributed through job requests, but certain shops will sell them individually as well. All trainers also begin with Camping Gear, which can be used to cook food items you have found or bought into meals for your Pokémon. The meals can be whatever you imagine within reason, and boost affection based on the ingredients used.
Affection Ranks and Recording:
Each activity will grant you a certain amount of points towards affection with your Pokémon, and every hundred points will grant you a new rank of affection with them. It looks roughly like this:
- Rank One - 100 Points
Rank Two - 200 Points
Rank Three - 300 points
Rank Four - 400 Points
Rank Five - 500 Points
Affection can be recorded using your profile, so make sure to update it often as you eat and play with your Pokémon. We will know if your numbers are higher than they should be, so be honest and avoid being punished. The full list of affection items and how much the affect your Pokémon can be found in the Items section of the Trainer School.
