OOC note: You cannot participate in this thread until you have posted in the Call to Arms post and gone through the Hearth! The Chosen step out of the flames and into a mad flurry of activity. It was a very expensive lodge, once, where skiiers could relax between trips up and down the mountain, during the day, before returning to their hotel rooms. Now it's in a state of extreme disrepair: the roof smashed in on one side, with beams falling crooked onto the expensive floors, dumping snow across the fancy couches and rocking chairs. Someone in the distance screams, but the Chosen can barely make that out under the wild flapping of wings above them. They look upward, and are assaulted by sharp beaks and raking claws; they get a glimpse of flashing feathers on birds roughly the size of an eagle, but in all the chaos, they can't see much more. Someone injured, half-hidden under a chair, calls out that the guests have fled to the hotel just down the hill, and are holed up there, fortifying against the strange attack. That is the place to start. The trick is just to get there. Birds claw and scratch without making any sound aside from the flapping of their wings, and each Chosen must fight them off as they run through the calf-high snow, protecting a handful of civilians on their way.

OOC:
This is the first leg of the first chapter of our very first meta! To continue on to the next part of the story, please respond to the prompt above and, as you do, roll 1d6.
If you roll a 5 or a 6, you manage to fend off your bird with your brand new weapon and make it to the relative safety of the hotel, where the majority of the resort guests have started building barricades. You can continue to other prompts in this section, or do other non-prompt RP, whatever you'd prefer!
If you roll less than a 5, you take 2 damage, and have to reroll. Continue rerolling and taking damage until you successfully roll 5 or 6.
*** This prompt will be open until the finale of this section. Feel free to complete at your own pace, but remember, you can't RP anywhere else until you reply to the above and successfully roll a 5-6.

For like. A split second. Split second. Tara was all wide-eyed and bushy tailed and totally, totally gleeing over the fact they'd just walked through fire into the Alps. Like. Holy s**t. That's amazing. This is so cool. Actually cold. But still, jokes aside.
Yeah and then the birds started hitting her. She shrieked and threw her arms over her head, tugging her hood even closer down around her. Her boots crunched in the snow, and she tried to make sure she wasn't about to run into anyone else. Through the chaos, she was able to take in the state of the lodge--a shame it was in such shambles. Must have been beautiful, but clearly not a good place for shelter now.
She did hear about the hotel. A place to head to at least. If she could... get past the birds! Tara swung her bow, trying to knock a large bird away from her and... immensely hating how deep this snow was.
The swing made contact, and Tara felt a bit of regret in hearing the immense bird screech. But she kept on moving through the snow, anxious to get to the hotel. Sooner they could get to some form of peace, if only temporary, the sooner they could all start... figuring out what to do about this mess.

Birds! ******** birds! Caleb could handle armed militia firing at him, but this was too many ******** birds! Is that what he was sent here for? Did Ares call him out of Afghanistan just to have him killed by birds in Switzerland?!
He groaned audibly before leaping into combat. Even if this situation was overwhelming, now it all came together - why he was sent here, him specifically - and his fear subsided. He unleashed his greatsword in a mighty swing towards the birds!
The swing was successful - at least in so much as clearing a slight pathway before him to charge forward and out of the lodge. The birds were still on his tail as he hauled a** as quickly as he could into the hotel, skidding onto the ground upon arrival of safety.

The other side was supposed to be safe. She was supposed to come out okay upon stepping through the hearth. Yet as Effie reached her destination in the snowy covered mountains, she wasn't greeted with a welcomed silence. She was greeted with a giant bird swooping down to attack her. What the --?!! How the heck did a bunch of birds get there, and why were they attacking everyone?
"Uwaagggh," was all the artist managed to get out. She tried to swing at the attacking bird with her tower shield. She tried to hit it, but her weapon was just too heavy, and all she ended up doing was missing. In her attempt to subdue the bird, it had flew down and struck her with its talons, causing Effie to cry out in pain. Two others ahead of her had managed to succeed, but not her. Luck was not on her side just yet. How typical.

Tom was not ready for what seemed to be chaos that he was thrown in as soon as he was teleported there. He thought they might have SOME time before getting to the problem but it seems they had been transported directly into the middle of it. He would have to remember that for next time.
And with all the chaos he was unable to get a shot out before being clawed at by one of the birds and tripped a bit face-first into the snow. Not a good start.

The first thing Rob noticed when he emerged from the flames was that he was alive. The second thing was it was cold. The third thing was that the air was filled with huge bloody birds. He barely had time to ready the big two-handed greatsword he carried before one of the birds, not making a sound save for the flapping of its wings, attacked him. "s**t!" he swore loudly as the bird's talons and beak made contact, drawing blood. Despite the size of the creature, the damage it was doing to him felt more like scratches than anything. Ducking his head as best he could to protect his face, he swung the sword, but it was an exercise in futility as the bird was too close and the sword was too long. Forget trying to get to the hotel -- he was just trying to stay alive.

The birds just kept coming.
A second one made direct eye contact with Effie, and then it sprung into action. It was bigger than the last, but luckily this made it slower. Where as the first bird had successfully hit the artist, the second bird wouldn't be so lucky. Just as it was about to hit her, Effie had raised her shield with all of her strength. Her timing was perfect, and she managed to shield herself from the second blow without getting hit. "Oh, thank Dionysus," she found herself murmuring.
Only after the bird thudded to the ground, unconscious, did Effie peek out from behind her shield. The bird was out cold, and she couldn't help but sigh in relief. Good -- now she would be able to head and meet the resort guests without much difficulty. With her shield in hand, the young woman made her way out of bird-infested lodge, and set her sights for the hotel.

Well...So much for witnessing! As soon as she made it out of the fire, Mercy was assaulted by claws and beaks before she could even get her proper footing. "Owww! God damn it!" She shook her head while trying to swing at the birds with her hammer, only to miss and occur even more scratches and feathers in her hair. Either this was the start of a long a** mission or all the magic she occurred from kicking Rob's a** was nothing but a fluke. Ares must be regretting his choice, laughing, or facepalming. Perhaps he was doing all three? Either way, Mercy was doing a serious disservice her god by getting beat up by some birds. Where's Mathilda when you need her? She could really use someone laughing at her right about now. Status Mercy's Health: 50 hp Weapon: War hammer (10 base - 1 hit) Rolled: 3 [ - 2 hp ]

Luckily Tom was able to gather his wits about him and shoot an arrow out towards the birds. Whether he hit or missed he didn’t care, he needed to get farther from where they were and search to see if there was anyone else outside of the hotel that were being attacked.
Considering how weird of an event this was there had probably been no warning to those at the resort and he wouldn’t be surprised if there were those stuck out there also being attacked by birds.
He managed to grab his stuff and get a bit a ways and secure it on himself before trying to look for someone else to help him with any survivors. He couldn’t go out there alone. There would be more birds and if he was trying to carry someone back by himself he would have no way to defend himself.

Marisol doesn't have time to take in the scene. The flap of wings muffles the commotion that surrounds them. She takes a hurried step forward and falls to a knee as a bird talon nearly rips into her face. It's while she's down that she hears the hiding person--who is less hidden than they seem to think--yell that the people have run, to a hotel of all places. If that's where the people have gone, that's where she needs to go. Which sounds a hell of a lot easier than it is. She climbs to her feet and tries to rush towards the door but she feels the tangle of claws in her hair and she has to dive under a nearby--severely broken--table. She pressed her palm against the scrape and grimaces when it comes away with faint traces of red. That better be the last time one of these devil birds gets anything on her. With a glower, she turns her eyes towards the door and waits for the right time to run. Marisol's Health: 50 - 3 (Ranged Weapon) - 2 (Damage) = 45 HP Marisol's Weapon: Whip (4 Base; +1 Hit)

Maybe she could make it to the hotel this time and not embarrass herself? Mercy let out a cry of frustration when she found that this was not to be true. The birds kept coming and she kept swinging, but sadly, none of her awesome swings were making the cut. It wasn't so much the birds frustrating her as it was the fact that she wasn't living up to her God's expectations. She was an Ares damn it! These fluffy a** birds shouldn't be giving her a run for her money! "Sólo me deja pasar ya!!" [Just let me through already!] This was really starting to piss her off! The adrenaline was flowing through Rob's veins as he fended off the bird's attacks, frantically pounding it with his fists and raking it with his fingers in an attempt to grab it. Finally with a mighty heave he shoved the creature off of him; it flapped as it tried to keep from falling from the air and crashed to the ground with a thud before taking wing again. This gave Rob enough time to ready his sword for another attack. With a snarl he swung the big weapon with all of his strength, and this time he didn't miss, striking the bird with the full force of the greatsword.
The bird squawked and retreated, and Rob saw his chance. Brandishing the sword in case he was attacked again, he headed out into the snow.

Mery's jaw dropped when she saw a certain elven looking friend of hers making it to the hotel before she did. The Ares chosen slammed her hammer on the snow [ the only thing she can seem to hit apparently ] and screamed. "REALLY?! You're going to let Punk Legolas through and not me?! That's some BULLSHIT birds!" She hit the snow again before resuming her swinging, almost weeping at the amount of feathers that now found themselves in her hair. Now she had to worry about baby birds hatching in there! So much shampoo was going to be wasted IF she could get through this misery alive. It isn't until she stands up that she realizes what a big mistake it was to take her eyes off of her surroundings. She doesn't even take a full step before a bird rams into her side. A massive stumble forces her fingers to ungrip and she drops her whip for a moment. Fury at such stupidity courses through her and she lunges for it. Even when it is in her hand once more, she doesn't feel less angry. She rushes to the next place of cover she can see and finds its a far better position. There's a roof beam that can protect her back while she peers out from behind a toppled bookcase. She has to make it to the door. There's no other option. The door is her escape to get to the people who are trapped and need her help. A deep breath; come on, she thinks. Just one moment.
