Below the surface of Homeworld are where many middle class gems toil away. Gems of all shapes and sizes work here on various projects, from repairing ships, to alpha testing new technologies. It's these gems that keep Homeworld a well greased axle. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it!

╚══════════════╝ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Aquamarine couldn't be too sure whether or not Pearl would join her in the Hub. If she was wrong, she not only would make a fool of herself by treading where only common gems walked, but she would undoubtedly be reported back to Azurite, and after that, chaos would follow through with the rest.
Something inside Aqua told her that she would be okay though. The act of tearing the paper, the sudden change of tone, the look on the overused Pearl's face; it was all too genuine, all too real. And with this thought, Aqua walked down a secluded area of the Hub. Despite all the looks from the common gems, seeing as an elite was down in such a disgusting place as the Hub. Official gems never went down here unless it was for serious business. But it was Aqua's only option if she wanted Pearl to come along undetected. She knew Azurite wouldn't step foot in a Hub. Aqua walked down the hall with an air of confidence. She squared her shoulders and straightened her back. This felt good.
"See you soon, Pearl," Aqua whispered to herself, almost in confirmation, as she went around an unlit corner into a less crowded area, taking a deep breath.

Despite her circumstances, a weight as if Homeworld itself was resting on her shoulders, Pearl reflected the same equable air as her superior. The Hub, the place where working gems worked, a center of toil and strife, was familiar to the gem. Not in presence, Azurite rarely had her venture forth among common, lower gems for fear a single glance would taint her precious pearl, but it was the air—overwork without compensation, without appreciation, without gratitude, only expectation. An existence for one thing and one thing only. No freedom.
None.
This thought made Pearl stop first before the intention to look about for her acquaintance came to mind. Refocusing her thoughts on the matter at hand, she barely caught the sight of Aquamarine headed down a corridor that tapered off from the Hub and to someplace unknown. She followed as if beckoned, and as she traipsed down its length, she hummed out a note to the gem before her as her eyes glanced around to make sure they were well and truly alone.
"Gem structures are surely labyrinthine, aren't they?" she said in her same conversational tone, pursing her lips. "It's a wonder how we can get lost down these long hallways, but never lose ourselves."

╚══════════════╝ -------------------------------------------------------------------- There was a quiet clearing of the throat as Aquamarine turned around to face the Pearl she had guided to this place. The thought of going against the Diamonds had frightened her quite a bit before, enough to the point where she forced herself to stay in line. She once thought that if and when she would ever go against the command of her Diamond's word (Aqua was a very finicky gem from the start; she hated being told how to do her job), it would be only under dire circumstances, and she would most definitely be under a lot of guilt. But she wasn't.
No, Aquamarine was completely tranquil. The thoughts and actions were seamless and smooth, and took no extreme effort. It was almost as if it were meant to be. Every step of the way here, every breath she took, it all felt right. It reminded her of the time she first fixed a ship. It felt natural, and most of all, it gave her a sense of power.
"Yes, they indeed are. But, I want to get to the point of things," she said, looking off at a far wall, her hands behind her back. "I want to know how you feel. About all this."
Although she was a very frank gem, she meant well. Everything she did was conditioned to have a purpose, and it not only applied to her work, but her behavior as well. It was a bad habit she'd have to overcome, but for now, she stood stiff, and spoke in short, blunt sentences. -------------------------------------------------------------------- ▐ █ ███████ ██████ ██████████▐ █ ███████ ██████ ██████████▐ █ ███████ ██████ ██████████▐ █ ███████

Such a question caught the gem off guard. Her lips parted, ready to answer, but she pursed them again and approached the adjacent wall to study its detailing.
Leaning her back against the wall now, she said in her same sing-song tone, "Never did I think another gem would ask me such a question, let alone an elite." Her tone deepened to a doleful, almost angry reply come her continuation. "Of course I am not happy with my circumstances. What gem of my status would? I am a nothing to that awful Azurite, a prancer to her whims! I am no better a machine, a plaything! And I continue like a fool, plastering on a smile, putting on friendly airs. It disgusts me! Absolutely disgusts me!"
Suddenly, her anger got the better of her, and she slammed a fist to the wall. Breaths dragged erratically from her breast before she took a deep one to compose herself. Straightening herself back to her serviceable persona, Pearl finalized with, "No Pearl you ever see is happy, Aquamarine. We are only thus because our autonomy is nonexistent."

╚══════════════╝ -------------------------------------------------------------------- It would be an understatement to say that Aquamarine was merely surprised by the outburst of such a tiny gem. Because she had rarely thought about it, Aqua was startled by Pearl's anger. It was always a common thought by gems of her class that the lower service class gems never really had an opinion on their work, since they always pranced around the temple courtyards so gracefully and with such glee for their owners. She had never thought about those gems ever having regret for their actions and loathing for their masters. It wasn't right. Something had to be done. If the lower class was becoming more aware that the higher classes were corrupt in power, that said a lot.
"I had never thought about it that way before. I suppose it's because my class blinds me from thinking about people under me. I've tried." She looked at the wall, exhaling slowly, her head swarming with contradictory thoughts as she tried to see it from another point of view. "I never really knew you were all so upset. I thought doing this is what you loved. I thought what you were made for was your passion. I thought you were all like me. I can see how selfish and foolish that is now. Pearl tempered her anger with a deep exhalation. Suddenly, she smiled. "Don't you think it is a bit presumptuous? Apologizing after eons of the same society? Change doesn't come so easily." The gem tilted her head. "Though I must ask, why? What compelled you to hear me out? Most elites would turn me away with a flick of the wrist. Is it because you sympathize with them? Those traitors, the rebellion, on that planet... what is it called... Earth? There has been much talk of them, y'know. And worry of other minds, like them, already on Homeworld..."

╚══════════════╝ -------------------------------------------------------------------- Aquamarine paused immediately after Pearl had stopped talking, as if she were going to say something, but then closed her mouth and thought for a while. A minute passed before she spoke again
"I'm not apologizing on behalf of my class--or any class for that matter. I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. I apologize to all of your class and below for my behavior in the past towards you. And I'll make it my goal to remember what you've said and to take into account what my actions do to affect others." Aquamarine's gaze turned back to Pearl, her own expression purposefully unreadable.
"And as for Earth and the rebellious gems who look after it; I do not have an opinion on them one way or another. They may do as they please as long as they don't effect my way of life and my specific job. In all actuality, I might be leaning towards their side. But I in no way sympathize with them. Not yet."

Pearl knew it was impudent of her, but she seemed to cast away Aquamarine's apology with an icy shoulder. She hid her perturbation behind a stone face, but internally, being apologized to annoyed her. She erroneously equated it to pity.
To bounce back, she said, "I guess I could say the same. That planet and those gems' lofty dreams are a lifetime away from my life here." Pearl paused, as if for dramatic effect. "However, I've also heard they've given the diamonds quite the trouble, especially our great matriarch. Oh, and so much scandal! Talk of fusion between two different gems, a renegade pearl...! Heh, I feel like Azurite right now..."
Pearl silenced for a second before tentatively broaching a topic she had only dreamed of pursuing. With a deep breath, she said, "...I have a question, a request, proposal even." She turned her face away. "You know of my anger and detest of me duties on this planet. As an elite, and a technician with access to technologies I am forbidden to touch, will you..."—Pearl swallowed thickly—"will you help me leave this place? All I need is a ship, nothing else. And I will do everything, absolutely everything in my power to make sure word does not get out that you were my accomplice. All blame will fall on my shoulders, ensuring your duties are not disturbed."

She wasn't entirely in agreement with the higher class and their caste system, but she wouldn't quite say she was entirely against it either. And because of this, at no time had it ever crossed her mind to go against the word of her superiors and build something that hadn't been assigned. The thought scared her. But somewhere deep inside her, it intrigued her the slightest bit.
"I...I'll have to think about it. It's a risky ordeal in itself. And even if you promise to try your hardest to keep me out of this, it's still only a try. Nothing will be able to guarantee my safety in this. But..." She stopped, pondering a moment."If I do build this...I'm going with you. There's no question about it. If something should happen, a Pearl like you couldn't handle much, no offense. I have some battle training along with my technological skills, as all gems of my status do. I could be of help."

The barest flicker of something crossed Pearl's features then, but it was indecipherable, even for her. Her lips parted to protest, but for the first time in her existence, she became docile and quiet by bowing her head and clasping her hands together. Had this been one of her typical deliveries, she would've quietly admonished Azurite or any other gem, but in this case, it was because Aquamarine was right.
She had little tactical knowledge and her fighting was clumsy. Like all other pearls, she only had the grace of dance, but how could that help her on a battlefield? The thought embarrassed her, eliciting a heat to her cheeks that she tried in vain, and failed, to hide.
"F-fine," Pearl said. She tried to steady a focused glare onto the other as if, somehow, that would kill the color to her face, but it only made it worse. "I'll... I'll accept your proposal. For now. But once we reach the surface of Earth, we part ways. During the time it takes to procure parts and the like, train me. Teach me to fight. A-and that's... That's the last I will ask of you."

She wasn't known to be pompous or arrogant, but just this once, she had let it be known that she was proud of being in the right. Although not much, Aqua was considerably trained in case of emergency, such as an invasion, or a sudden battle. Even though it would be safer to bring along a warrior gem, which were unfortunately much more expendable, it would be foolish to ask around for a recruit on mission the likes of theirs. It was easier just to let Aqua do both. She thought hard before she folded her arms across her chest and finally spoke.
"That's quite alright with me. I'll do my best to keep this all undercover; I expect you to do the same. But there is just one question before we leave this place." Her tone had lowered, adding to the increasingly tense atmosphere. "What exactly are your intentions on Earth? I don't suppose you're going just to say hello to the primitive species that life on the surface of that planet?"

Pearl bounced back from her embarrassment, settling back into her cool and serious exterior once again. Hinting her reply with a gentle smile, she said simply, "I want to live."
She cast her eyes to the ceiling and seemed to look beyond the curvature of the hallway, beyond the limits of Homeworld, through the stars, and to that little blue ball among the cosmos.
"I heard Earth is a planet of opportunity. Of course, it may just be hearsay, but I want to believe it in. The so-called war does not interest me, I just... want to find someplace else to belong because, to be frank, anywhere is better than Homeworld."

If there was nothing more to say on the matter on Pearl's part, Aqua had a particular project that would take some time to complete. "Although I don't share your point of view in that aspect, I can see where you come from. I've lived too long, and paid too much attention to my work to care either way about this place." She hummed, placing her hands behind her back. "But Earth could be pretty exciting. I could see what kind of resources I can take advantage of on the planet. I suppose I could stay there. It would save me the trouble of going back to Homeworld without an excuse. But I agree," Aqua paused, looking back at Pearl with a calculating gaze. "We should part ways as soon as we touch ground. Until then, I need to finish a newly commissioned project."With that, Aquamarine turned around, and walked back out in the open with a strong pose, each stride full of purpose. It would take some time before Aqua could finish this project; she needed to start immediately if she wanted it done before anyone could notice.
